Development and validation of a highly dynamic and reusable picture-based scale: A new affective measurement tool

Emotion measurement is crucial to conducting emotion research. Numerous studies have extensively employed textual scales for psychological and organizational behavior research. However, emotions are transient states of organisms with relatively short duration, some insurmountable limitations of textual scales have been reported, including low reliability for single measurement or susceptibility to learning effects for multiple repeated use. In the present article, we introduce the Highly Dynamic and Reusable Picture-based Scale (HDRPS), which was randomly generated based on 3,386 realistic, high-quality photographs that are divided into five categories (people, animals, plants, objects, and scenes). Affective ratings of the photographs were gathered from 14 experts and 209 professional judges. The HDRPS was validated using the Self-Assessment Manikin and the PANAS by 751 participants. With an accuracy of 89.73%, this new tool allows researchers to measure individual emotions continuously for their research. Validation of Pictorial Mood Assessment with Ottawa Mood Scales and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale for Young Adults

Pictorial mood assessments reduce the barriers of age, culture, gender and language fluency in the course of psychiatric assessments. This study sought to validate the Ottawa Mood Scales, a pictorial form of mood assessment questionnaire among non-native English speaking young adults in Malaysia. Since the Ottawa Mood Scales has not been previously validated, the convergent validity of the Ottawa Mood Scales was measured against the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), an established mood assessment instrument. A total of 129 young adults (aged 18-34) were recruited and completed an online survey with the Ottawa Mood Scales and PANAS questionnaires. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that the Ottawa Mood Scales has a one-dimensional structure and that a four-item model demonstrated higher reliability than the original 5-item model. Scores on the Ottawa Mood Scales items positively and significantly correlated with scores on the negative PANAS subscale, which supports the validity of the Ottawa Mood Scales in measuring the negative effect. The Cronbach's α was .793 for the four-item model of the Ottawa Mood Scales indicating acceptable reliability in this Malaysian young adult sample. It was concluded that the Ottawa Mood Scales could have utility in assessing mood disorder symptoms in young adults.

The Effect of Pain Catastrophizing on Depression among Older Korean Adults with Chronic Pain: The Mediating Role of Chronic Pain Interference and Sleep Quality

Pain catastrophizing is a notable concept associated with change in chronic pain interference and depression. Sleep quality is also one of the important factors affecting geriatric depression. This study examined the mediating effects of chronic pain interference and sleep quality on the relationship between pain catastrophizing and depression. This study is a secondary data analysis that analyzed a total of 138 older Korean adults with chronic pain. The participants were selected from a single elderly daycare center in a city in South Korea. Also, the multiple regression analysis and PROCESS macro with bootstrapping were used. The results revealed that chronic pain interference and sleep quality mediated the relationship between pain catastrophizing and depression, respectively. Furthermore, chronic pain interference and sleep quality sequentially and dually mediated the effect of pain catastrophizing on depression. In the management of depression in the elderly, persistent complaints of pain should not be disregarded, irrespective of the intensity of their chronic pain. Psychological intervention is needed to alleviate negative thoughts about chronic pain and to increase the ability to cope with chronic pain. In addition, it is important to assess sleep patterns and to develop interventions to improve sleep quality, because depression in the elderly could appear as a symptom of a sleep problems.
