Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM It is well-recognized that inflammation is an adaptive pathophysiological response in many types of cancer. Research on nutrition's critical role in inflammation, a risk factor for all forms of cancer, is growing. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) was created lately to assess if a diet is pro- or anti-inflammatory in terms of inflammation. Indeed, several studies have demonstrated the correlation between DII and the risk of several cancer types. This meta-analysis set out to look into the relationship between DII and the different forms of esophageal cancer. METHOD PubMed, Cochrane library, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched up to May 2024 to retrieve relevant articles. RAYYAN intelligent tool for systematic reviews was incorporated for the screening of studies. Original articles written in English Studies that investigated the inflammatory index of diet in individuals who developed esophageal cancer were included in this study.STATA v18 software was used to conduct the meta-analysis. Egger's test for publication bias assessment was implemented. Newcastle Ottawa scale was used to evaluate the qualities of the included studies. A plot digitizer was used to extract digital data. RESULT A total of 13 studies were included in the systematic review, with 6 studies contributing to the meta-analysis, comprising 10,150 participants. The participants were categorized into high and low DII groups, with the low DII group (n = 3,403) serving as the reference. The meta-analysis demonstrated a significant association between high DII and increased risk of esophageal cancer. Specifically, individuals in the high DII group were 29% more likely to develop esophageal cancer, with a pooled odds ratio (OR) of 1.29 (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.16-1.43), as calculated using a random-effects model. Moderate heterogeneity was observed (I2 > 50%). Egger's test indicated evidence of publication bias (p < 0.05). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of this association across populations and study designs. CONCLUSION our study concludes that a higher level of DII is associated with a higher risk of esophageal cancer development. This study suggests that modifying inflammatory properties of dietary patterns can reduce the risk of incidence of esophageal cancer.

Abstract
Background Tumor markers are routinely used in clinical practice. However, for resectable patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), they are applied infrequently as their prognostic significance is incompletely understood. Methods This historical cohort study included 2769 patients with resected ESCC from 2011 to 2018 in a high-risk area in northern China. Their clinical data were extracted from the Electronic Medical Record. Survival analysis of eight common tumor markers was performed with multivariable Cox proportional hazards regressions. Results With a median follow-up of 39.5 months, 901 deaths occurred. Among the eight target markers, elevated postoperative serum SCC (Squamous cell carcinoma antigen) and CEA (Carcinoembryonic antigen) predicted poor overall survival (SCC HRadjusted: 2.67, 95% CI: 1.70-4.17; CEA HRadjusted: 2.36, 95% CI: 1.14-4.86). In contrast, preoperative levels were not significantly associated with survival. Stratified analysis also demonstrated poorer survival in seropositive groups of postoperative SCC and CEA within each TNM stage. The above associations were generally robust using different quantiles of concentrations above the upper limit of the clinical normal range as alternative cutoffs. Regarding temporal trends of serum levels, SCC and CEA were similar. Their concentrations fell rapidly after surgery and thereafter remained relatively stable. Conclusion Postoperative serum SCC and CEA levels predict the overall survival of ESCC surgical patients. More importance should be attached to the use of these markers in clinical applications.

Abstract
Background and objectives: Combined peripheral neutrophil−platelet indexes reflecting the systemic inflammatory status have been reported to predict the clinical outcome in patients with various types of cancer. However, the prognostic value of combined neutrophil−platelet indexes in operable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. The study introduced a novel combined neutrophil−meanplateletvolume−platelet ratio (NMPR) index and investigated its clinical and prognostic value in patients with operable ESCC receiving curative surgery. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of the clinicopathologic data of 277 consecutive ESCC patients who received curative resection at Zhejiang Cancer Hospital in China between January 2007 and December 2010 was conducted (the training cohort). In addition, the clinicopathologic data of 101 resectable ESCC patients at Renmin Hospital of Hubei University of Medicine between December 2018 and June 2021 were collected (the external validation cohort). The optimal cutoff value of NMPR concerning overall survival (OS) in the training cohort was determined by X-tile software. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate the prognostic value of NMPR along with other variables in the training cohort, which was further validated with the same cutoff value in the external validation cohort. Significant predictors of OS were used to construct the nomogram, of which the discrimination and calibration was evaluated by concordance index (C-index) and calibration plots. Results: With a cutoff value of 16.62, the results from both the training and external validation cohorts supported the association of high NMPR (>16.62) with increased tumor length and advanced T stage but not with other variables. In the training cohort, a significant association between shorter OS and high NMPR (p = 0.04) as well as high CRP (p < 0.001), poor tumor differentiation (p = 0.008), advanced T stage (p = 0.006), advanced N stage (p < 0.001) and high CEA (p = 0.007) was revealed. Additionally, the high NMPR was verified to independently predict unfavorable OS (p = 0.049) in the external validation cohort. The C-index of the OS nomogram cooperating significant predictors in the training cohort was 0.71 and the calibration plots of the OS nomogram fitted well. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that high NMPR is an independent predictor of unfavorable OS in resectable ESCC patients without neoadjuvant therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES At present, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients accepting neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) plus surgery lack corresponding prognostic indicators. This study aimed to construct a prognostic prediction model for ESCC patients undergoing nCRT and surgery based on immune and inflammation-related indicators. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the levels of serum immune- and inflammation-related indicators of ESCC patients before receiving nCRT plus surgery in the training cohort (99 patients) and validation cohort (67 patients), which were collected from 2007 to 2020. Univariate and multivariate Cox survival analyses were conducted to evaluate the indicators to set up a nomogram associated with the patients' overall survival (OS). The prediction accuracy and discriminative ability of the nomogram were measured by the concordance index (C-index), decision curve, calibration curve, integrated discrimination improvement (IDI), and net reclassification improvement (NRI). RESULTS Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses demonstrated that immune globin A (IgA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were independent risk factors. A nomogram based on IgA, CRP, and cTNM stage was established for predicted OS in the training cohort and validated in the validation cohort. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.820 (95% CI: 0.705-0.934), which was higher than that of the cTNM stage (0.655 (95% CI: 0.546-0.764), p < 0.05) in the training cohort, and similar results were observed in the validation cohort (0.832 (95% CI: 0.760-0.903 vs 0.635 (95% CI: 0.509-0.757), p < 0.001). Furthermore, the prediction accuracy and net benefit of the nomogram verified by the calibration curve, decision curve, NRI, and IDI were satisfactory in the training and validation cohorts. CONCLUSION The newly constructed nomogram concluding serum IgA, CRP, and cTNM stage might be helpful in the prognosis prediction for ESCC patients receiving nCRT plus surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have evaluated the clinicopathological significance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) of esophageal cancer in relatively small numbers of patients. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the prognostic significance of CEA in 1822 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS Based on the Japanese Esophageal Society nationwide multi-institutional retrospective study, a total of 1,748 surgically treated ESCC from 15 hospitals were enrolled to evaluate prognostic impact of preoperative CEA values. Among them, 605 patients were categorized to up-front surgery group, and 1,217 patients were categorized to neoadjuvant therapy group. The CEA threshold for positivity was 3.7 ng/ml. The clinicopathological and prognostic impact of CEA was evaluated by univariate and multivariate analysis in each treatment modality groups. RESULTS In total, the CEA positive rate was 25.8% (470/1822). CEA-positive status was significantly associated with distant metastasis (P = 0.004) but not associated with other factors. CEA-positive status was associated with poor overall survival (P < 0.001) in univariate analysis as well as multivariate analysis (P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS CEA was an independent prognostic determinant of overall survival in esophageal SCC. Based on the subgroup analysis, regardless of the treatment modality, patients with high pretreatment CEA showed poor overall survival.

Abstract
Objectives C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were independent predictive factors for gastric cancer (GC). Our study was designed to prove the prognostic value of the combination of CRP and NLR (COC-NLR) in GC patients. Materials and methods A total of 1,058 GC patients who underwent D2 resection from Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center between 2003 and 2013 were included. They were divided into three groups (low: NLR ≤2.5, CRP ≤6.1; medium: NLR >2.5, CRP ≤4.5; high: NLR >2.5, CRP >4.5 or NLR ≤2.5, CRP >6.1) by the random forest method. Survival analysis stratified by COC-NLR groups was performed. Results The mean survival time for each group was: for the low group 75.44 months (95% CI: 72.48–78.40), the medium group 56.50 months (95% CI: 50.68–62.31), and the high group 38.65 months (95% CI: 34.51–42.97). The low group showed obviously better overall survival (OS) than other two groups (p<0.001). Survival analysis showed that COC-NLR had statistical significance in both univariate and multivariate analyses (p<0.01). Conclusion This study showed that COC-NLR could work as an independent prognostic factor in GC and provide more accurate prediction than single NLR or CRP.

Abstract
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the dominant subtype of esophageal cancer worldwide. This study aimed to explore the aberrant global expression profiling and construct regulatory network in ESCC for understanding tumorigenesis of ESCC. The expression pattern of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), microRNA (miRNA) and mRNA was measured by RNA-sequencing in ESCC. Differentially expressed lncRNAs/miRNAs/mRNAs (DELs/DEMs/DEMIs) were identified in ESCC. DEMIs-DEMs network was constructed; hsa-miR-424-5p and hsa-miR-450b-5p were the hub miRNAs in the network, which negatively regulated 19 and 17 DEMs. DEMs targeted by DEMIs were significantly enriched in MAPK signaling pathway, pathways in cancer and focal adhesion signaling pathway. The expression of candidate DEMs and DEMIs in ESCC were validated through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and microarray expression profiling analyses, and the results were generally consistent with our bioinformatics analysis. Our results might provide useful information for exploring the tumorigenesis mechanism and potentially therapeutic targets in ESCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, studies have shown that plasma D-dimer and serum albumin are prognostic markers for esophageal cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a novel prognostic scoring system--DA score (combination of preoperative plasma D-dimer and serum albumin levels)--and analyze the association between survival of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and their Glasgow prognostic score. METHODS In this retrospective study, preoperative biochemical markers and clinicopathologic factors in 260 ESCC patients treated with transthoracic esophagectomy were reviewed. According to receiver operating characteristic analysis, the cutoff values of D-dimer and albumin were defined as 0.5 μg/mL and 43.8 g/L, respectively. Patients with high D-dimer levels (≥0.5 μg/mL) and low albumin levels (<43.8 g/L) were assigned a score of 2, those with only one of the two abnormalities were assigned a score of 1, and those with neither of the two abnormalities were assigned a score of 0. RESULTS ESCC patients with a DA score of 0, 1, and 2 numbered 55, 116, and 89, respectively. Survival analysis showed that patients with a DA score of 2 had lower overall survival (OS) rates than those with DA scores of 1 and 0 (37.1% vs. 52.6% and 76.4%, P < 0.001); similar findings were observed for disease-free survival (DFS) rates (32.6% vs. 44.8% and 67.3%, P < 0.001). In addition, the predictive value of the DA score was also significant in patients with stages I-IIA and stages IIB-IV ESCC. Multivariate Cox regression analyses indicated that hazard ratios (HRs) for predicting OS of patients with DA scores 1 and 2 were 2.25 (P = 0.010) and 3.14 (P < 0.001), respectively, compared with those with a DA score of 0, and HRs for predicting DFS of patients with DA scores of 1 and 2 were 1.86 (P = 0.023) and 2.68 (P < 0.001), respectively, compared with those with a DA scores of 0. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that preoperative DA scores are notably associated with postoperative survival of ESCC patients.

Abstract
Aims. To evaluate the prognostic significance of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) in colorectal cancer (CRC). Patients and Methods. Preoperative serum IL-6 was measured in 233 CRC patients and 13 healthy controls. Relationships between IL-6 and various clinicopathological factors were evaluated, and the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates according to IL-6 status were calculated for all patients and according to disease stage. Results. The mean IL-6 level was 6.6 pg/mL in CRC patients and 2.6 pg/mL in healthy controls. Using a cutoff of 6.3 pg/mL, obtained using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, 57 patients had a high IL-6 level. The mean value was higher for stage II disease than for stage III disease. IL-6 status correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP) and carcinoembryonic antigen levels, obstruction, and pT4 disease. The OS differed according to the IL-6 status for all patients, whereas the DFS differed for all patients and for those with stage II disease. The Cox proportional hazards model showed that pT4 disease was an independent risk factor for recurrence in all CRC patients; IL-6, CRP, and pT4 were significant risk factors in stage II patients. Conclusions. The preoperative IL-6 level influences the risk of CRC recurrence.
