Resilience in Informal Caregivers of Patients with Heart Failure in China: Exploring Influencing Factors and Identifying the Paths

Changes and predictors of resilience among wife and husband caregivers of patients with advanced cancer: A longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Resilience as a dynamic process plays a significant role in caregivers' mental health. Little is known about gender differences in the resilience process and predictors of resilience in spousal caregivers.

AIM

To investigate changes in resilience among wives and husbands of patients with advanced cancer over a 6-month posttreatment period, and identify different predictors of resilience between females and males.

DESIGN

This longitudinal, observational study was conducted from January to December 2022.

SETTING/PARTICIPANTS

Spousal caregivers of patients with newly diagnosed advanced cancer were recruited from five regional tertiary hospitals in China. There were three assessment points at 1, 3, and 6 months post-initial treatment. The dependent variable was resilience, and five independent repeated variables were investigated.

RESULTS

Totally, 179 wife caregivers and 133 husband caregivers were included. Resilience in both wife caregivers and husband caregivers increased over time (Wald χ2 = 29.83, p < 0.001) but husbands had higher levels of resilience than wives (Wald χ2 = 35.59, p < 0.001). However, there was no interaction between time and gender (Wald χ2 = 5.25, p > 0.05). Patient functional status, caregiver burden, social support, coping self-efficacy, and mutuality were predictors of resilience for wife caregivers. Meanwhile, patient functional status, caregiver burden and coping self-efficacy could predict resilience for husband caregivers.

CONCLUSIONS

Healthcare providers may develop gender-specific interventions to promote resilience in spousal caregivers of patients with advanced cancer. This would improve mental health for caregivers in the process of palliative care.

Could social support mediate the relationship between personality trait patterns and mental health in Chinese older adults: a nationwide cross-sectional study conducted in 2022

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to examine the personality trait patterns of older adults, investigate the influence of personality traits on their mental health, and explore the mediating role of social support in the relationship among personality trait patterns, personality traits and mental health.

METHODS

This study utilized a cross-sectional design, with 4,197 participants from the psychology and behavior investigation of Chinese residents in 2022 (PBICR2022). Latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted to identify distinct personality profiles, and multiple linear regression and mediation analyses were performed to examine the relationships among personality trait patterns, personality traits, social support, and mental health.

RESULTS

The LPA identified four distinct personality profiles among older adults. Multiple linear regression revealed that Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness were positively associated with better mental health, whereas Neuroticism was negatively associated with mental health. Social support was found to partially mediate the effects of Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, Agreeable-Conscientious Personality and Extraverted-Low Neuroticism Personality on mental health and to fully mediate the effect of Openness and Extraverted-Conscientious Personality.

LIMITATIONS

The study's cross-sectional design limits the ability to draw causal inferences about the relationships among personality traits, social support, and mental health. Additionally, the reliance on self-reported measures may introduce bias.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated that personality traits and social support are crucial determinants of mental health in older adults. Social support plays a significant mediating role, suggesting that interventions aimed at enhancing social networks could be particularly effective in improving mental health for older adults.

Determinants of preparedness in family caregivers of patients with heart failure

AIMS

Inadequate preparedness of family caregivers contributes to adverse outcomes of patients with heart failure (HF). However, evidence on caregiver preparedness is limited. This study aims to examine the determinants and potential mechanisms of preparedness in family caregivers of patients with HF.

METHODS AND RESULTS

In the cross-sectional study, 298 HF patient-caregiver dyads were recruited from 4 tertiary hospitals in China. Preparedness, uncertainty in illness, family relational quality, social support, and positive aspects of caregiving (PAC) were assessed in family caregivers using self-reported questionnaires. In the path analysis model, uncertainty in illness had an indirect negative effect on preparedness via reduced PAC [indirect effect = -0.020; 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.050 to -0.002]. Whereas, family relational quality had direct (β = 0.266; P < 0.001) and indirect positive effects on preparedness through increased PAC (indirect effect = 0.027; 95% CI, 0.003-0.067). Similarly, social support also had direct (β = 0.184; P = 0.004) and indirect positive effects on preparedness through increased PAC (indirect effect = 0.027; 95% CI, 0.004-0.065).

CONCLUSION

This study highlights that diminishing uncertainty in illness may indirectly improve caregiver preparedness through the enhancement of PAC, while raising family relational quality and social support may improve caregiver preparedness both directly and indirectly by augmenting PAC. These findings provide insightful implications for healthcare professionals in developing tailored interventions to ameliorate preparedness in family caregivers of patients with HF.

Factors Associated with and Predictive Model for Resilience in Family Caregivers of Care-Dependent Adults

Background: Caring for dependent people is an intense task that leads family caregivers to suffer physical or mental pathologies. Resilience is a protective factor that makes an individual more resistant to adverse events. Some characteristics of the caregiver or the care provided predispose the caregiver to be less resilient. Knowing these characteristics will allow us to detect vulnerable caregivers. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the factors associated with caregiver resilience and establish a predictive model, including the relationship between preparedness, burden, resilience, and anxiety. Materials and Methods: The study design was descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional, with purposive sampling. The sample included 172 family caregivers of care-dependent patients in Spain. Questionnaires were administered to assess caregiver resilience, anxiety, burden, and the preparedness of care-dependent patients. Correlation, univariate, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify the factors associated with resilience. Results: We found that there is a correlation between resilience, preparation, and burden. Factors related to resilience include age, the caregiver's health status, kinship, childcare, and state aid granted. Caregiver preparedness is the factor that most predicts caregiver resilience in our model. Caregivers with high levels of resilience also demonstrated high levels of preparedness and experienced less burden than those with low levels of resilience. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the relevance of improving the preparation of family caregivers to increase their resilience and, at the same time, the quality of care provided.

Risk perception and quality of working life of nurses in infectious disease department in China: The chain-mediating effects of psychological resilience and social support

AIM

To determine whether social support and psychological resiliency are significant mediators of the associations between risk perception and quality of working life in Chinese nurses working with infectious diseases.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey of 879 nurses in infectious diseases department of specialty or general hospitals in China completed online questionnaires on the nurses' risk perception questionnaire, quality of working life, psychological resilience and the social support rating scale.

RESULTS

Our study observed that risk perception directly negatively influences the quality of working life of infectious disease nurses, while psychological resilience and social support positively chain mediate this relationship.

CONCLUSION

Critical elements impacting the quality of working life of infectious disease nurses are risk perception, psychological resilience and social support. Managers may think about decreasing the level of risk perception and enhancing the quality of working life of infectious disease nurses by enhancing their psychological resilience and providing support.

PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION

The quality of working life of infectious disease nurses should be a priority for nursing management; it is critical to maintain their health and well-being, raise the quality of care and lower turnover. Managers should create resilience-building programmes and support tools to assist nurses properly perceive risks and adopt protective strategies to deal with them to improve the quality of working life for nurses.

The mediating effect of self-efficacy on family functioning and psychological resilience in prostate cancer patients

Aims

Prostate cancer patients face impaired body image and psychological distress during the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, which leads to changes in mood, cognition and behavior. Psychological resilience has been shown to buffer shocks and stresses from the disease. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between family functioning and psychological resilience in prostate cancer patients and the mediating role of self-efficacy between family functioning and psychological resilience to provide a relevant theoretical basis for improving patients' psychological status by providing relevant theoretical basis.

Method

Using a cross-sectional design, participants were 215 patients with prostate cancer admitted to and treated in a tertiary hospital in Jiangsu province, China. Questionnaires were administered using the general information questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolution Index (APGAR), and the General Self-efficacy Scale (GSES). Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational analyses and the bootstrap mediation test was used to test the effect relationship between the variables.

Results

Family functioning, self-efficacy and psychological resilience were significantly and positively correlated (r = 0.526, P < 0.01; r = 0.378, P < 0.01; r = 0.358, P < 0.01). The mediating effect of psychological resilience between family functioning and psychological resilience was significant, accounting for 42.56%.

Conclusion

Family function and self-efficacy have been shown to increase the level of psychological resilience in prostate cancer patients. Attention should be paid to the mental health problems of prostate cancer patients, early screening and intervention, and the use of patients' family resources to improve their confidence in recovering from the disease, thus increasing their psychological resilience and improving their mental health.

Benefit finding in individuals undergoing maintenance hemodialysis in Shanghai: a latent profile analysis

Objective

This multi-center cross-sectional study aimed to delineate latent profiles of benefit finding (BF) in individuals undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) in Shanghai and examine associations between these BF profiles, social support, and coping style.

Methods

A total of 384 individuals undergoing MHD (mean age = 57.90, SD = 13.36) were assessed using the Benefit Finding Scale, Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, and Perceived Social Support Scale. Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified distinct BF categories. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) evaluated the correlation between BF groups and demographic variables, while the relationship between BF, social support, and coping style was tested through correlation and multiple regression analyses.

Results

LPA identified three BF groups: rich BF (54.17%), moderate BF (41.14%), and poor BF (4.69%). Regression analyses indicated that positive coping and social support are protective factors for BF. Additionally, older age and heightened understanding of MHD correlated with higher BF levels.

Conclusion

The findings highlighted the importance of recognizing different BF profiles in individuals on MHD and working toward promoting BF levels in the rich BF and moderate BF groups, while helping the poor BF group to identify and address their challenges. Medical professionals should consider interventions tailored to individual psychological profiles to improve mental health and quality of life outcomes in this population.

Emotional Coping Strategies for Informal Caregivers of Hospitalized Patients: A Study of Distress and Overload

Purpose

Informal caregivers constitute a vulnerable population group that has forsaken their activities and life projects with the sole purpose of caring for a dependent individual without receiving any form of compensation in return. Emotionally, this population has been neglected by both the state and family members, exacerbating distress levels among them. The objective is to analyze the impact of emotional coping strategies on the experiences of distress and emotional burden among adult informal caregivers tending to hospitalized individuals.

Sample and Methods

The role of emotional coping strategies in caregiver burden and psychological distress was examined in 460 informal adult caregivers from Guayaquil, Ecuador, who participated in an online survey. The instruments used included the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS 21), the Zarit Burden Inventory (ZBI), and the Emotional Coping Questionnaire (Cuestionario de Afrontamiento Emocional). The analysis involved a multiple regression to iteratively select variables, aiming to build a simpler and more explanatory model.

Results

Employing multiple regression analysis with a stepwise model selection procedure, it was found that 16.5% of the variance in depression, 19.5% of the variance in anxiety, 19.8% of the variance in stress, and 32% of the variance in burden were predicted by specific coping strategies. Additionally, the impact of burden was estimated by the participants' gender, with greater burden observed among males due to societal role expectations.

Conclusion

This study underscores the importance of emotional coping in the experience of informal caregivers and suggests that psychological interventions should focus on developing adaptive strategies to manage the stress and emotional burden associated with caregiving.

The Association Between Group Identity and Post-Traumatic Growth in the Post COVID-19 Era: The Mediating Effect of Social-Emotional Competence

Purpose

To investigate the impact of human-society relationships on individual post-traumatic growth (PTG) in the post COVID-19 era, this study examined the association between group identity (GI) and PTG, and explored the mediating role of social-emotional competence (SEC).

Patients and Methods

In this cross-sectional study, we surveyed 1203 high school students in an eastern region of China using the GI Scale, the SEC Scale, and the PTG Scale. We conducted correlation and mediation analyses using SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS software.

Results

The results indicated that GI was a significant positive predictor of PTG (β=0.219, p<0.001), and that the pathway between GI and PTG was partially mediated by SEC (Effect=0.074, 95% CI= [0.045,0.104]).

Conclusion

GI can have both direct and indirect effects on PTG, with the latter mediated by SEC. These findings hold important theoretical and practical implications for promoting PTG and enhancing mental health in the post COVID-19 era.
