Abstract
AIM Alpha-actinin 3 (ACTN3) is associated with diminished physical function and muscle mass in older individuals. However, the effects of lifestyle on this relationship remain unclear. This study explored whether the association between ACTN3 polymorphisms and physical function and body composition varied based on exercise and dietary habits. METHODS A longitudinal analysis of 197 community-dwelling individuals aged 60 years and older (mean age 72.5 ± 5.9 years, 60.9% women) in the Tarumizu study provided data on ACTN3 gene polymorphisms, with surveys completed in 2019 and 2022 (mean follow-up 1156 ± 80.0 days). Physical performance (grip strength, walking speed) and body composition (body weight, appendicular skeletal muscle mass [ASMM], and fat mass) were assessed. Genetic polymorphisms were analyzed in oral mucosa samples and categorized into type R allele carriers and type XX alleles (homozygous for minor alleles). Median values determined exercise habits (≤4 days/week or ≥5 days/week) and dietary habits based on high-protein-food frequency scores. RESULTS The proportion of type XX genetic polymorphism was 26.4%. Two-way repeated-measures analysis of covariance showed a significant interaction between genetic polymorphism and time for ASMM (F = 10.552, P = 0.002) in the ≤4 days/week exercise habits group. Significant interactions were observed in grip strength (F = 7.013, P = 0.009) and ASMM (F = 5.347, P = 0.023) for the ≤11 score high-protein-intake group. CONCLUSIONS This association may contribute to accelerated age-related changes in physical performance and body composition, particularly among individuals with type XX genetic polymorphism who have low exercise habits and a limited intake of high-protein foods. Abstract
Methods An electronic search of five databases was used to retrieve controlled studies investigating health-related outcomes associated with any type of PE, in adults over 65 years with depression. Where possible, data were analyzed in meta-analyses or else reported narratively. Results and Discussion. Fifteen studies were included in the review. All 15 studies had data available for meta-analysis, yet heterogeneity in exercise types and outcome measures limited synthesis. When data for all types of exercise were pooled together, significant improvements were found in depression (SMD = 0.52; CI = 0.07, 0.97; p = 0.02), physical health and function (SMD = 0.44, CI = 0.14, 0.74; p = 0.004), anxiety (SMD = 0.23; CI = 0.04, 0.42; p = 0.02), and self-efficacy (SMD = 0.97; CI = 0.32, 1.61; p = 0.003). When data were pooled according to exercise type, positive effects were demonstrated for aerobic exercise on depression (SMD = 0.49; CI = -0.16, 0.8; p = 0.003), tai chi/qigong on depression (SMD = 0.89; CI = -0.14, 1.63; p = 0.02), and self-efficacy (SMD = 6.70; CI = -0.90, 12.50; p = 0.02) and multicomponent exercise demonstrated positive effects on physical function (SMD = 0.49; CI = 0.12, 0.87; p = 0.009) and the physical health component of quality of life (SMD = 0.88; CI = 0.10, 1.65; p = 0.03). No health-related benefits were revealed from the combined findings of the two studies investigating strengthening exercises. Conclusion Lack of consistency regarding exercise types, dosage, and outcomes presents challenges in the evidence. In general, exercise is beneficial across a range of health-related variables. Multicomponent, aerobic, and tai chi forms of exercise appear most likely to reap benefits in depressed older adults; however, the type of benefit is determined by the type of exercise and should be considered when recommending a regime. Abstract
BACKGROUND Existing cross-sectional studies suggest a strong positive association between Internet use, physical activity, and mental health in older adults; however, longitudinal studies reporting the relationship between Internet use, physical activity, and levels of depressive symptoms in older adults are lacking. This study aimed to examine the bidirectional relationship between Internet use and depressive symptoms in older adults and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS We used two waves of follow-up data (2016 and 2018) from the China Family Panel Studies, including 5837 participants aged 60 years or above. The bidirectional relationship between Internet usage time and depressive symptoms was examined using a cross-lagged model. The mediating role of physical exercise was examined using a half-longitudinal mediation model. RESULTS The results revealed a bidirectional relationship between Internet use time, frequency of physical activity, and depressive symptoms. Longer Internet use predicted lower levels of depressive symptoms, and the frequency of physical activity mediated the longitudinal relationship between Internet use and depressive symptoms in older adults. LIMITATIONS First, our study used self-report-based variables. Second, our study did not obtain the specific timing of the application of various functions of the Internet and the intensity of physical activity among older adults. Finally, based on the availability of data, our study involved only two waves of data. This may not be sufficient for a full longitudinal mediation effect test. CONCLUSIONS Internet use and depressive symptoms were interrelated over time among older adults. The frequency of physical activity was a mediator of Internet use and depressive symptoms. This underscores the importance of Internet-based technologies to enable healthy living and prevent depression and loneliness in older adults.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to validate the interrelationships and potential pathways of influence between healthy lifestyles, psychological resilience, and depressive symptoms in the Chinese elderly population. Methods We utilized data from the Chinese Elderly Health Influential Factors Tracking Survey 2018 and included 9448 samples for the study after screening according to the qualifying conditions. The interrelationships among healthy lifestyles, psychological resilience and depressive symptoms were analyzed using stepwise regression, and the robustness of mediation effects was assessed using Sobel and Bootstrap test. Results Among Chinese older adults, healthy lifestyles were negatively associated with depressive symptoms (β = -0.310, 95% CI: -0.405, -0.215), positively associated with psychological resilience (β = 0.137, 95% CI:0.071, 0.023), and psychological resilience was negatively associated with depressive symptoms (β = -1.014, 95% CI: -1.037, -0.990). Conclusions Psychological resilience partially mediated the association between healthy lifestyles and depressive symptoms, with the mediating effect accounting for 44.8% of the total effect. Our study contributes to the understanding of the relationship between healthy lifestyles and depressive symptoms in the elderly population and emphasizes the important role of psychological resilience. It is recommended that the government and policymakers improve depressive symptoms among older adults through comprehensive measures such as promoting healthy lifestyles and education, providing psychological support services, and creating a favorable environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although some studies have examined the association between exercise and falls, most have focused on specific exercises, and the results have been inconsistent. In addition, there is a lack of evidence on elderly Chinese women who have different living and exercise habits compared to those in other countries. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether physical exercise is associated with falls in elderly Chinese women. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 1429 elderly Chinese women with a mean age of 69.2 years. Information on physical exercise habits and fall experiences was collected using a self-report questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between physical exercise habits and falls. RESULTS The results showed that 15% participants had a fall in the past year. After adjusting for confounding factors, the odd ratios (ORs) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs) for fall experiences across categories of exercise frequency were as follow: 1 (reference) for no exercise behavior, 0.50 (0.29, 0.85) for exercise 1 to 5 times a week, and 0.37 (0.25, 0.55) for exercise more than 6 times a week. Furthermore, the ORs (95% CIs) across categories of exercise insistence were 1 (reference) for less than 1 year, 0.78 (0.37, 1.65) for 1 to 3 years, and 0.38 (0.20, 0.74) for more than 3 years. In terms of exercise duration, the ORs (95% CIs) for < 1 h/day, 1-2 h/day, and > 2 h/day were 1 (reference), 0.85 (0.53, 1.36), and 2.80 (1.30, 6.05). Unlike other variables, longer exercise duration was associated unfavorably with falls. CONCLUSION Physical exercise habits were associated with falls in elderly Chinese women. Keeping a proper exercise habit may contribute to lower risk of falling in elderly women.

Abstract
Physical exercise has beneficial effects on human health, and several studies have examined the association between exercise and mental health. However, most of these studies focused on exercise intensity, duration, or frequency. Evidence for the association between the duration of maintaining an exercise habit and mental illness is lacking, especially in young adulthood-a crucial period that bridges adolescence and adulthood. This study investigated the association between the duration of keeping an exercise habit and mental illness and life attitude among Chinese university students. A total of 11,392 university students participated in this study (6866 men and 4526 women). The duration of keeping an exercise habit was evaluated using a questionnaire with relevant questions. Exercise habit was defined as exercising for longer than 30 min per session and more than twice a week. Mental illness consisted of two elements: depressive symptoms-assessed using the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale, and anxiety symptoms-assessed using the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale. Life attitude was assessed using a questionnaire with relevant questions. Multivariate logistic regression analysis examined the adjusted association between the duration of keeping an exercise habit and mental illness and life attitude. In the final adjusted model, compared to the no exercise category, the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of depressive symptoms were 0.80 (0.70, 0.91) for those with an exercise habit of 1-4 months, and 0.72 (0.63, 0.83) for those with one of >4 months (p for trend <0.001). Additionally, when compared to participants with no exercise habit, the adjusted odds ratios (95% CIs) for anxiety symptoms were 1.01 (0.90, 1.14) for those with a habit of 1-4 months and 0.78 (0.69, 0.88) for those with one of >4 months (p for trend =0.001). A longer duration of keeping an exercise habit was also significantly associated with positive life attitudes. Our results showed that a long duration of keeping an exercise habit was significantly associated with a lower prevalence of mental illness among university students. Further, maintaining a more prolonged exercise habit may benefit individuals' mental health in young adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a common mental disorder in middle-aged and elderly people, which seriously affects their physical health and life quality.So far, whether pulmonary function is a factor in depression has not been tested.The purpose of this study was to test whether pulmonary function was independently associated with depression and to assess the effects of cognitive ability and sleep time on this association. METHODS In this analysis, 5,235 participants from the Chinese Longitudinal Study of Health and Retirement were included. Participants were registered in 2015 and followed up in 2018. The relationship between pulmonary function and depression was estimated by binary logistic regression model. The mediated role of cognitive ability was examined by intermediary analysis, and the interaction between pulmonary function and sleep time on depression was discussed. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding factors, it was found that higher baseline pulmonary function was the protective factor of depression (OR [95%CI]=0.524 [0.394-0.697] for the lowest quantile vs the highest quantile). Cognitive ability explained 14.55% of the association between pulmonary function and depression, pulmonary function and sleep time on the effects of depression have a combined interaction, RERI (95%CI) = 0.545 (0.053-1.038). CONCLUSIONS High baseline pulmonary function is independently associated with a lower risk of depression, which is partly mediated by cognitive ability. Pulmonary function and sleep time have synergy with the effects of depression. These findings show that pulmonary function, cognitive ability and sleep time are reliable predictors of depression.

Abstract
The “Healthy China 2030” plan states that it is necessary to formulate and implement physical health intervention plans for special groups, including women. Based on questionnaire data from women in seven Chinese cities, our research analyzed the status quo of women’s fitness, its influencing factors, and the differences in and characteristics of different types of women’s fitness demands from four aspects: demography, fitness motivation, fitness behavior, and fitness demands, so as to provide a reference for the promotion of women’s fitness. A total of 3473 valid samples were completed. The questionnaire included five age groups: there were 146 in the “20–29 years old” group, 829 in the “30–39 years old” group, 1088 in the “40–49 years old” group, 1105 in the “50–59 years old” group and 305 in the “60 years old and above” group. The questionnaire used in this study was a self-made questionnaire. The contents of the questionnaire included age, occupation, educational level, family circumstances, and health status, women’s fitness behavior, fitness motivation and fitness demands. The results show that the current situation of urban women’s fitness in China is characterized by low frequency and short duration of exercise. The internal factors affecting women’s fitness demands include fitness motivation and fitness behavior. The external factors affecting their fitness demands are social environment and family environment. The differences in women’s fitness demands mainly come from women’s occupation, monthly income, and family stage.

Abstract
This study examined the relationship of low appendicular skeletal muscle mass and low muscle function with depressive symptoms in Korean older adults. Community-dwelling Korean older adults aged 65 years and older (n = 521) participated in this study. Appendicular muscle mass (ASM) and muscle function (MF) scores were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning and sit-to-stand mean power based on a 30 s chair stand test, respectively. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Korean form of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of depressive symptoms according to ASM- and MF-based subgroups; normal ASM/normal MF, low ASM/normal MF, normal ASM/low MF, and low ASM/low MF. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 21.3% in all patients: 20.7% in women and 21.5% in men. Compared to the normal ASM/normal MF participants (OR = 1), the risk of depressive symptoms rose incrementally in subjects with low ASM/normal MF (OR = 2.963, p = 0.019), normal AMS/low MF (OR = 3.843, p = 0.002), and low ASM/low MF (OR = 7.907, p < 0.001), respectively. The current findings suggest that the coexistence of low ASM and low MF is significantly and independently associated with an increased risk for depressive symptoms, with dynapenia having a stronger relationship.
