Organic matter and nitrogen removal within field-scale constructed wetlands: reduction performance and microbial identification studies

Evaluation of Waste Stabilization Pond Efficiency and Its Effluent Water Quality: a Case Study of Kito Furdisa Campus, Jimma University, Southwest Ethiopia

Waste stabilization pond (WSP) technology is one of the most promising wastewater treatment methods. In developing countries, including Ethiopia, only a small proportion of the wastewater is being treated. Discharge of untreated wastewater into receiving water bodies may lead to disruption of ecological integrity, economic, and public health risks. However, there is limited evidence on WSP efficiency and effluent water quality in Ethiopia. A laboratory-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 wastewater samples. A standard method of procedure was used to collect and analyze samples. SPSS version-24 was used for statistical analysis and a paired t-test was used to test for statistical significant differences. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) in the removal efficiency of BOD₅ up to 75.3% (117 mg/L effluent) and COD up to 56.5% (457.5 mg/L effluent) was recorded. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) in the removal efficiency of TN up to 79% (17.4 mg/L effluent), TP up to 69.2% (4.8 mg/L effluent), and PO₄⁻³ up to 71% (3.36 mg/L effluent) was recorded. Whereas, a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) in the removal efficiency of total coliforms up to 99.99% (3.4 × 10³ MPN/100 mL effluent) and fecal coliforms up to 94.3% (8.54 × 10² MPN/100 mL effluent) was recorded. The overall efficiency of the treatment plant was 73.5% and its water quality index of the effluent water quality of WSP was 30. The finding showed that the efficiency of the WSP was judged as satisfactory and the effluent water quality of WSP is unsuitable for the discharge into the environment. Therefore, to improve the efficiency of the WSP and to produce adequately treated water, it required adequate preliminary treatment, modification of the design, desludging of the pond, additional treatment, and frequent monitoring and maintenance of the pond.

Potential of constructed wetland treatment systems for agricultural wastewater reuse under the EU framework

One of the solutions for the problems regarding increasing water scarcity and pollution of water resources can be wastewater reuse. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a sustainable and cost-effective technology for wastewater treatment. If they are able to produce effluent of a needed quality, they can be a valuable addition for wastewater reuse schemes. This review studied 39 treatment systems based on CWs, and it assessed their characteristics and performance on pollutant removal. Moreover, their potential to reach the new European Union standards for agricultural wastewater reuse was evaluated. The results showed that the combination of CWs with additional technologies (e.g. UV treatment, anaerobic reactors) can further increase their performance and provide better removal efficiencies in comparison with conventional horizontal and vertical subsurface flow CWs. Particularly, hybrid systems showed a better removal of organic matter and bacterial indicators than single-stage CWs. For most of the systems considered, the concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids in treated effluent were below the limits for agricultural reuse. However, that was often not the case with Escherichia coli and therefore it is recommended to add a disinfection unit to the systems in order to achieve the levels required in the case of agricultural reuse.

Modeling climatic effect on physiochemical parameters and microorganisms of Stabilization Pond Performance

The present study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between physiochemical parameters, microorganisms, wastewater and climate in Stabilization Pond Performance. This study performed as a post-treatment after the secondary wastewater treatment using extended aeration in Rashid city, Egypt. The model of the extended aeration as secondary wastewater treatment was developed based on the combination with lagoon after the secondary sedimentation basin. The Climatic functions have an important impact on the mechanism of ponds as it actuates vertical mixing of the pond contents. The interaction between bacteria, algae and other organisms are the main idea of oxidation pond treatment beside the relationship between the climatic functions, physiochemical parameters and microorganisms biomass. The removal of biodegradable organic loads specially nitrogen and phosphorous are perfectly happens in oxidation maturation ponds which reflects a higher treatment efficiency of the sewage by 98%–99% of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and heavy metals. The study included some recommendations aiming at improving both water quality and its recycling in plants irrigation.

New insights for enhancing the performance of constructed wetlands at low temperatures

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been widely utilized for various types of wastewater treatment due to their merits, including high cost-effectiveness and easy operation. However, a few intrinsic drawbacks have always restricted their application and long-term stability, especially their weak performance at temperatures under 10 °C (low temperatures) due to the deterioration of microbial assimilation and plant uptake processes. The existing modifications to improve CWs performance from the direct optimization of internal components to the indirect adjunction of external resources promoted the wastewater treatment efficiency to a certain degree, but the sustainability and sufficiency of pollutants removal remains a challenge. With the goal of optimizing CW components, the integrity of the CW ecosystem and the removal of emerging pollutants, future directions for research should include radiation plant breeding, improvements to CW ecosystems, and the combination or integration of certain treatment processes with CWs to enhance wastewater treatment effects at low temperatures.
