Cytomegalovirus enteritis in an immunocompetent host

A 60-year-old healthy woman presented with fever, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. After initial conservative therapy, enterectomy was performed because of perforation of the jejunum. Histological analysis and high titer of anti-CMV IgM confirmed the diagnosis. A 2-year follow-up was uneventful. CMV enterocolitis is frequent in immunocompromised patients, but rare in immunocompetent subjects.

Self-limited colitis during the course of rubella and cytomegalovirus infection in an immunocompetent adult

We report a case of self-limited colitis in cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in an immunocompetent adult. A 22-year-old man developed a high fever and diarrhea. Laboratory data revealed an increased number of lymphocytes and liver damage. Enzyme immunoassays for anti-virus antibodies revealed that the patient was recently infected with CMV and rubella. Colonoscopy revealed severe erosive and edematous mucosa that resembled ulcerative colitis (UC). The symptoms, laboratory data and colonoscopic findings improved without any medical treatment. This case indicates that UC-like self-limited colitis can occur in an immunocompetent individual during the course of CMV infection.

Cytomegalovirus enterocolitis in an immunocompetent individual

We report a rare case of cytomegalovirus (CMV) enterocolitis in a healthy 57-year-old woman. In March 1999, she developed hematochezia, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Total colonoscopy on March 17th showed multiple aphthoid lesions and friable mucosa from the terminal ileum to the rectum and a shallow ulcer on the ileocecal valve. Repeat total colonoscopy on April 19th showed faded aphthoid lesions in the terminal ileum, and biopsy specimen revealed CMV inclusion bodies. Symptoms and endoscopic findings improved without any specific medication. In previous reports, the definition of "immunocompetent individual" varied. Here, we define immunocompetent individual as one who has no associated diseases, is not under immunosuppressive therapy, has no recent history of operation, is negative for human immunodeficiency virus antibody, is not pregnant, has no obvious infectious course, and is less than 70 years of age. This is the ninth report of CMV enterocolitis in an immunocompetent individual in the world literature.

Life-threatening cytomegalovirus colitis in the immunocompetent patient: report of a case and review of the literature

Cytomegalovirus colitis in the immunocompetent patient is an unusual clinical entity. We describe a patient with life-threatening cytomegalovirus colitis in the absence of immune deficiency and review the medical literature available on this topic.
