A narrative review of digital health literacy within cystic fibrosis telehealth: are we considering it?

Background and Objective

With the increased adoption of digital health solutions, such as telehealth, there is a need to consider current practices and considerations towards digital health Literacy. The objective of this review is to explore what digital health literacy considerations have been detailed in cystic fibrosis telehealth papers.

Methods

The found papers published from a recent systematic review exploring telehealth within cystic fibrosis care were taken and analysed. These papers were obtained from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases and included any paper written in English up to May 2021. Data pertaining to Health Literacy, Digital Literacy/Competency, Digital Health Literacy, Training, Readiness Assessments, and Sustained Use were extrapolated using Elicit AI Research Assistant 2024.

Key Content and Findings

From the 26 papers, the data of interest was sparse and mostly unavailable for this review. This may be due to several reasons; however the implication of this mitigation is discussed with reference to the digital divide, health in-equalities, and safety.

Conclusions

This review highlights that a structured approach to assess digital health literacy of care teams and people with cystic fibrosis is critical to the future success of safe telehealth use, and other digital health solutions.

Ensuring patient and public involvement in the transition to AI-assisted mental health care: A systematic scoping review and agenda for design justice

BACKGROUND

Machine-learning algorithms and big data analytics, popularly known as 'artificial intelligence' (AI), are being developed and taken up globally. Patient and public involvement (PPI) in the transition to AI-assisted health care is essential for design justice based on diverse patient needs.

OBJECTIVE

To inform the future development of PPI in AI-assisted health care by exploring public engagement in the conceptualization, design, development, testing, implementation, use and evaluation of AI technologies for mental health.

METHODS

Systematic scoping review drawing on design justice principles, and (i) structured searches of Web of Science (all databases) and Ovid (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Global Health and Embase); (ii) handsearching (reference and citation tracking); (iii) grey literature; and (iv) inductive thematic analysis, tested at a workshop with health researchers.

RESULTS

The review identified 144 articles that met inclusion criteria. Three main themes reflect the challenges and opportunities associated with PPI in AI-assisted mental health care: (a) applications of AI technologies in mental health care; (b) ethics of public engagement in AI-assisted care; and (c) public engagement in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and diffusion of AI technologies.

CONCLUSION

The new data-rich health landscape creates multiple ethical issues and opportunities for the development of PPI in relation to AI technologies. Further research is needed to understand effective modes of public engagement in the context of AI technologies, to examine pressing ethical and safety issues and to develop new methods of PPI at every stage, from concept design to the final review of technology in practice. Principles of design justice can guide this agenda.

Mobile applications for managing symptoms of patients with cancer at home: A scoping review

BACKGROUND

Education plays an important role in cancer symptom management for patients and their families. With the advancement of information and communication technology, there may be additional evidence for the use of mobile apps to support patient and family education.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this review was to explore and synthesize scientific literature about cancer symptom management mobile apps that can be used by patients and their families.

METHODS

This review adopted a scoping review study framework, using electronic databases including EBSCO, PubMed, ProQuest, Science Direct, and Google Scholar using search keywords: 'caregiver family', 'mobile application', 'symptom management' and 'palliative care'. Of a total of 2633 papers found, 11 papers were selected.

FINDINGS

Assessment tools are a major component of mobile apps in reporting and assessing symptoms to provide appropriate education. The information in mobile apps is delivered through various mediums that include modules, videos, avatars and cultural integration features.

CONCLUSION

Mobile apps can improve provision of palliative care in several ways, most importantly by increasing the knowledge of the patient's family to manage cancer symptoms. Nurses are expected to play an active role in finding and utilizing appropriate mobile apps to assist families in managing a patient's symptoms at home.

The impact of online self-management interventions on midlife adults with type 2 diabetes: a systematic review

Background:

Online self-management education programmes are now recommended for people with type 2 diabetes to improve self-management capacities. There is limited evidence to determine whether such programmes improve the health outcomes for midlife adults with diabetes.

Aims:

The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the impact of online self-management interventions with digital consulting on glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes distress, self-efficacy, and depression in midlife adults.

Methods:

A systematic review was undertaken searching Medline, Embase and CINAHL. Studies were appraised using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool.

Results:

Eight studies were included. Online interventions resulted in the improvement of HbA1c (pooled mean difference on HbA1c: -0.35%, 95% CI (-0.52, -0.18), P<0.001). A narrative synthesis was conducted for all secondary outcomes. No conclusions could be drawn on the impact of these outcomes.

Conclusion:

Online interventions improve HbA1c. Further research is needed for secondary outcomes.
