Benign cortical hyperostosis underlying soft-tissue tumors of the thigh

Parosteal lipoma associated with an underlying osteochondroma arising from the hallux

Parosteal lipomas are rare benign tumours of mature adipose tissue that arise in continuity with the underlying bone. These lesions represent less than 0.3% of all lipomas and commonly arise in the femur, tibia, humerus and radius. There have been no reported cases of such lesions arising in the foot. Hence, we report the first case of a parosteal lipoma arising in the great toe in association with an underlying osteochondroma.

MR imaging of a parosteal lipoma

A case of a parosteal lipoma of the thigh is presented. Very little is known of the enhancement features of this tumor. In this case, mild enhancement of tissue in the region of the pedicle between reactive cortical bone hyperostosis and the lipomatous mass corresponded to fibrous tissue that outlined the hyperostotic reactive bone.

Case report 774. Coincidental parosteal lipoma with osseous excresence and intramuscular lipoma

The parosteal lipoma is a rare but recognizable lesion. The combination of (a) a well-defined, radiolucent, soft-tissue mass that on CT is confirmed to be entirely composed of homogenous mature adipose tissue and (b) an osseous excresence and/or saucerization at the attachment of the soft-tissue mass to the subjacent cortex should be diagnostic. We were unable to find any other case report of a parosteal lipoma coexisting with another lipoma in the same individual.

Cranio-vertebral bony changes in a case of congenital lipomatosis

Congenital lipomatosis may cause a fatty mass infiltrating muscle planes and extending into the epidural space. Adjacent structures are displaced: there is pressure erosion of the vertebrae and periosteal new bone formation.

The role of computed tomography in diseases of the musculoskeletal system

Computed tomography has added another dimension to the evaluation of musculoskeletal disease. The ability to discern subtle differences in tissue densities and the capability of viewing structures in the axial plane has greatly aided the resolution between normal and pathologic tissue and the appreciation of the anatomic relation between normal and pathologic structures. This paper deals with the application of CT in the evaluation of neoplastic, inflammatory, traumatic, metabolic, and congenital diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
