Post-Paleozoic Patterns in Marine Predation: Was there a Mesozoic and Cenozoic Marine Predatory Revolution?

Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of predators involved a series of episodes. Predators rebounded rather rapidly after the Permo-Triassic extinction and by the Middle Triassic a variety of new predator guilds had appeared, including decapod crustaceans with crushing claws, shell-crushing sharks and bony fish, as well as marine reptiles adapted for crushing, smashing, and piercing shells. While several groups (e.g., placodonts, nothosaurs) became extinct in the Late Triassic crises, others (e.g., ichthyosaurs) survived; and the Jurassic to Early Cretaceous saw the rise of malacostracan crustaceans with crushing chelae and predatory vertebrates—in particular, the marine crocodilians, ichthyosaurs, and plesiosaurs. The late Cretaceous saw unprecedented levels of diversity of marine predaceous vertebrates including pliosaurids, plesiosaurs, and mosasaurs. The great Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction decimated marine reptiles. However, most invertebrate and fish predatory groups survived; and during the Paleogene, predatory benthic invertebrates showed a spurt of evolution with neogastropods and new groups of decapods, while the teleosts and neoselachian sharks both underwent parallel rapid evolutionary radiations; these were joined by new predatory guilds of sea birds and marine mammals. Thus, although escalation is sometimes cast as an ongoing “arms race,” in actuality the predatory record shows long interludes of relative stability puncturated by episodes of abrupt biotic reorganization during and after mass extinctions. This pattern suggests episodic, but generally increasing, predation pressure on marine organisms through the Mesozoic-Cenozoic interval. However, review of the Cenozoic record of predation suggests that there are not unambiguous escalatory trends in regard to antipredatory shell architecture, such as conchiolin and spines; nor do shell drilling and shell repair data show a major increase from the Late Mesozoic through the Cenozoic. Most durophagous groups are generalists, and thus it may be that they had a diffuse effect on their invertebrate prey.

The effect of epibionts on the susceptibility of the red seaweed Cryptonemia seminervis to herbivory and fouling

Epibiosis or fouling on living organisms can have direct and indirect detrimental effects, in particular on photosynthetic organisms such as seaweeds. It thus seems reasonable to hypothesize that macroalgae have been selected for the presence or induction of antifouling (AF) defences. The red seaweed Cryptonemia seminervis is usually found in nature with an elevated cover of epibionts. To assess the effect of epibiosis on the susceptibility of this seaweed to herbivory and fouling, the abundance of fouling was evaluated and compared to herbivore consumption (by amphipods and sea urchins) of fouled (bryozoan and sponge) and non-fouled C. seminervis. Attachment of the mussel Perna perna to surfaces treated with extracts from seaweeds with and without epibionts was also assessed. Epibiosis corresponded to ca. 51% of the blade surface of C. seminervis, sometimes covering as much as 90% and up to 51% of the thallus weight, encompassing mainly the bryozoan Membranipora membranacea and an unidentified sponge. Algae colonized by M. membranacea were preferred compared to algae devoid of epibionts, a 'shared doom' effect, either by the amphipod Elasmopus brasiliensis or by the urchin Lytechinus variegatus (p < 0.01). Sponge epibiosis also increased consumption by both herbivores (p < 0.001), suggesting that epibionts may act as lures to herbivores, attracting consumers that otherwise would not feed significantly on the seaweed. Foods containing extracts from fouled C. seminervis were preferred by urchins over the alga devoid of epibionts. However, extracts from fouled alga inhibited mussel attachment when compared to epibiont-free alga. Differences might be a direct detrimental effect of the presence of epibionts. On the other hand, epibiosis may induce the production of AF defences in C. seminervis.

Coral-Bryozoan Mutualism: Structural Innovation and Greater Resource Exploitation

Shell-encrusting species of the coral Aulopora and the bryozoan Leioclema changed ecological pgilds and escaped limits imposed by substrate size through mutstic intergrowth during the Early Devonian. Where colonies of these species intergew, they produced upright, arborescent masses consisting of sparsely branched uniserial Aulopora sp. entirely covered, except for calyx openings, by a thin encrustation of Leioclema sp. These interrowts appear to constitute a mutualistic association with benefits induding escape from limited space on the substratum into a higher tier of suspension feeders, as well as more modules per colony. Such mutualism between benthic modular competitors may have developed more readily than assocations between solitary competitors.

A mathematical model of facultative mutualism with populations interacting in a food chain

Facultative mutualism with populations interacting in a food chain is modeled by a system of four autonomous ordinary differential equations. Two cases are considered: mutualism with the prey and mutualism with the first predator. In both cases persistence and extinction criteria are developed in terms of the invariant flows on the boundaries.

Diversity, heterogeneity and consumer pressure in a tropical rocky intertidal community

Previous studies indicated that at Taboguilla Island (Gulf of Panama), persistence of many intertidal organisms depended on holes and crevices in the rock as refuges from both vertebrate (fishes) and invertebrate (crabs, gastropods, chitons) consumers. Here, we evaluate the influences of substratum heterogeneity and consumers on patterns of diversity of sessile organisms in this habitat. Local substratum topography is highly variable, ranging from smooth to irregular surfaces. Algal crusts typically dominate all low zone rock surfaces, and most other sessile spegies (invertebrates and foliose algae) occur in holes and crevices. Number (S) and diversity (H') of sessile species is lower on homogeneous surfaces than on heterogeneous surfaces. Rate of increase in S with area sampled is positively correlated with substratum heterogeneity; number of species sampled per transect at a homogeneous site would be about 10 vs 30 to 60 on a heterogeneous site. Large fishes and crabs forage intensively over both substratum types, but cannot enter holes and crevices to eat prey. Gastropods, chitons, limpets, and small crabs feed on both substrata but vary in abundance from hole to hole. Prey mortality is thus intense and constant on open surfaces, but variable in space and time in holes and crevices. When consumers are excluded from the general rock surface, algal crusts are settled upon and overgrown by foliose algae, hydrozoans, and sessile invertebrates, particularly bivalves. Both S and H' first increase, as sessile species invade and become more abundant, and then decrease as the rock oyster Chama echinata begins to outcompete other species and dominate primary space. Hence, consumers normally keep local diversity low by removing most sessile prey from open surfaces.In these experiments, a consumer pressure gradient was established by removing 0, 1, 2, 3, and all of 4 distinct groups of consumers. As predicted by the intermediate disturbance hypothesis, lowest diversity occurred at lowest (total exclusion) and highest consumer pressure (normal condition). Highest diversity occurred at intermediate consumer pressure. Unexplained variation in this relationship is probably due to quantitative and qualitative differences in consumer regime, variation among plots in substratum heterogeneity, and insufficient time for competitive dominance by Chama to be fully expressed. On a small (0.25 m²) spatial scale, consumers maintain low diversity by keeping prey scarce and causing local extinctions. On larger spatial scales, they may maintain and even produce high diversity through their interaction with substratum heterogeneity and possibly low dispersal rates of sessile species.

Mutualism Among Sessile Invertebrates: A Mediator of Competition and Predation

Hydroids of the genus Zanclea are epizoic on encrusting bryozoans. The bryozoans protect these hydroids with skeletal material. Zanclea polyps on the bryozoan Celleporaria brunnea sting small predators and adjacent competitors, helping Celleporaria to survive and to grow over competing species. This mutualism enables the two species to cover a larger area than they could individually.
