Abstract
Objectives: The objective of this narrative literature review was to highlight all dental procedures attributable to sectoral waste and to consider possible alternatives in line with the concept of sustainable development. Methods: An extensive search of electronic databases, including the Cochrane Oral Health Group Specialized Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. Search words included 'Green Dentistry', 'Dental Pollution', 'Pollutants and Dentistry', 'Disinfectants and Dentistry', and 'High-tech Dentistry'. All of them allowed an assessment of the impact of dental practice on the external environment, and new frontiers currently applied or possibly applicable for green dentistry were included in the study. Non-full-text papers, animal studies, studies in languages other than English, and studies not related to the topic under consideration were excluded. Results: According to the inclusion criteria, 76 papers were selected for the study. The topics analyzed were the impact of dental practice on the outdoor environment, currently applied and potentially applicable principles of green dentistry, and the 'Four Rs' model (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). Conclusions: With the limitations of the present study, the concept of green dentistry could be applicable provided that the measures already taken to reduce indoor and outdoor risk factors are continued and improved.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Three-dimensionally (3D) printed resins have become popular as a new class of materials for making interim restorations. However, little is known about how the fabrication parameters can influence biological compatibility with oral tissues. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the postpolymerization time on the cytotoxicity of resins for printing interim restorations by using a 3D organotypic model of the oral mucosa. MATERIAL AND METHODS Cylindrical specimens were prepared with conventional acrylic resin (AR), computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) resin (CC), composite resin (CR), and 2 resins for 3D printing (3DP) marketed as being biocompatible. The 3DPs were submitted to postpolymerization in an ultraviolet (UV) light chamber for 1, 10, or 20 minutes (90 W, 405 nm). Standard specimens of the materials were incubated for 1, 3, and 7 days in close contact with an organotypic model of keratinocytes (NOK-Si) in coculture with gingival fibroblasts (HGF) in a 3D collagen matrix, or directly with 3D HGF cultures. Then, the viability (Live/Dead n=2) and metabolism (Alamar Blue n=6) of the cells were assessed. Spectral scanning of the culture medium was performed to detect released components (n=6) and assessed statistically with ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test (α=.05). RESULTS Severe reduction of metabolism (>70%) and viability of keratinocytes occurred for 3DP resin postpolymerized for 1 minute in all periods of analysis in a time-dependent manner. The decrease in cell metabolism and viability was moderate for the 3D culture of HGFs in both experimental models, correlated with the intense presence of resin components in the culture medium. The resins postpolymerized for 10 and 20 minutes promoted a mild-moderate cytotoxic effect in the period of 1 day, similar to AR. However, recovery of cell viability occurred at the 7-day incubation period. The 3DP resins submitted to postpolymerization for 20 minutes showed a pattern similar to that of CR and CC at the end of the experiment. CONCLUSIONS The cytotoxic potential of the tested 3DP resins on oral mucosa cells was influenced by postprinting processing, which seemed to have been related with the quantity of residual components leached.

Abstract
Objectives This study investigated the in vivo embryotoxicity, teratogenic potential, and additional effects of orthodontic acrylic resin as well as its components, utilizing zebrafish as a model organism. The research focused on morphological, cardiac, behavioral, and cognitive evaluations that were performed on embryos and larval-stage animals subjected to chronic exposure. Materials and methods Embryo and larval-stage zebrafish were categorized into five experimental groups, which were further subdivided into five subgroups. These subgroups included three specific doses for each tested substance, a control with the vehicle (0.1 % dimethyl sulfoxide in water), and an absolute control (water). Assessments were performed on day 5 post-fertilization, which included morphological, cardiac, behavioral, and cognitive evaluations. All experiments had a sample size of ten animals and were performed in triplicate. Survival and hatching rates were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier test, while other measurements were assessed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Tukey post hoc test. Results Statistically significant differences were observed between the control and treatment groups across all the tested substances for heart rate, cognitive responsiveness, and cellular apoptosis. However, survival, hatching rate, and other parameters exhibited no significant variation, except for the highest dose in the dibutyl phthalate group, which demonstrated a notable difference in survival. Conclusions Chronic exposure to acrylic resin and its components may be associated with decreased cognitive ability and cardiac rhythm, as well as an increase in the level of cellular apoptosis in zebrafish.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of titanium dioxide nanoparticles incorporated into the acrylic baseplates of the maxillary part of twin block appliances in orthodontic patients during the treatment period. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-six patients were selected randomly and divided into two groups(n = 13). Test group patients used orthodontic functional appliances containing 1% titanium dioxide nanoparticles in acrylic baseplates. Control group patients used orthodontic functional appliances without titanium dioxide nanoparticles in acrylic baseplates. Swap samples were taken from the palatal gingiva facing the fitting surface of the acrylic component of the maxillary part of a twin block appliance for each patient at five-time intervals (baseline sample, after one, two, four, and six months) and then cultured in blood agar plates to calculate bacterial colony count. The Mann‒Whitney U test and the Friedman test were used to compare data. Bonferroni correction (p value ≤ 0.05) was applied to detect significant differences. THE RESULTS showed a decrease in the bacterial colony count in the test group compared to the control group. Pairwise comparisons revealed a statistically significant difference in samples after four- and six-month groups (p values = 0.002 and 0.011, respectively) vs. the one-month test group. A higher statistically significant difference was observed in the six-month group (p-value = 0.037) vs. the baseline group in the control group. CONCLUSION The addition of 1% titanium dioxide nanoparticles to acrylic baseplates of orthodontic functional appliances significantly reduced the bacterial colony count under the base plate after at least four months of application.

Abstract
Background. Microbial accumulation is still a significant problem with removable acrylic appliances. This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial properties of a self-cured acrylic resin containing curcumin nanoparticles (CNPs). Methods. This in vitro study used 48 acrylic discs containing 0.5%, 1%, and 2% CNPs. The antimicrobial properties of the discs against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Candida albicans were evaluated using disc agar diffusion (DAD), eluted component, and biofilm inhibition tests. The growth inhibition zones were measured, and the colonies were counted after 1, 3, and 7 days. Results. DAD test showed that none of the curcumin nanoparticle concentrations caused growth inhibition zones for any microorganisms. All the concentrations were effective against all four microorganisms in the biofilm inhibition test except 0.5% for L. acidophilus. In the eluted component test, solutions containing 2% concentration had maximum growth inhibition of all the groups at all time intervals. An increase in curcumin nanoparticle concentration from 0.5% to 1% was effective only against C. albicans. Conclusion. Generally, CNPs in all concentrations were effective against the biofilms of all four microorganisms assessed in this study. Therefore, incorporating 2% CNPs into acrylic resin seems suitable for clinical use.

Abstract
The study evaluated the influence of cycles and methods of an ocular prosthesis resin on cytotoxicity toward human conjunctival cells. Resins were polymerized by water bath (WB, 74 °C or 100 °C for 30 min to 9 h), microwave (MW, 1200 W, 3 to 14 min and 30 s at 0 to 720 W), or autopolymerization (AP, room temperature for 20 min ± 60 °C for 30 min). Degree of conversion (DC), cytotoxicity, level of inflammatory mediators, gene expression of different markers, and apoptosis were evaluated. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey test (p < 0.05). WB with longer processing time at higher temperature had highest DC (85.6%) and higher TGF β1-gene expression (1.39); long cycle low power MW showed lowest DC (69.6%), lower cell proliferation (85.4%, MTT), and large IL-2 release (39,297 ng/mL). AP with additional processing time showed lower cell proliferation (75.3%, Alamar Blue), and AP polymerized at room temperature showed higher CASP 9-gene expression (1.21). AP methods showed higher IL-6 release (>277 pg/mL). Short cycle medium power MW had higher IL-23 release (534.2 pg/mL). MW (long and short cycles) and AP polymerizations have triggered a more intense inflammatory response. Among methods recommended by the manufacturer, WB showed high DC and less cytotoxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of vacuum-formed and banded space maintainers for deciduous second molar space maintenance during the mixed dentition. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION The study sample comprised thirty children in the mixed dentition (age range, 5.9 to 9.8 years) with early loss of at least one deciduous second molar. METHODS This was a parallel-group, randomized, active-controlled clinical trial. Patients were randomly allocated to space maintenance performed with vacuum-formed or banded space maintainers with a 1:1 allocation ratio. The main outcome was any change in mesiodistal width of the extraction space. Secondary outcomes included the lingual rolling or axial rotation of the permanent first molar adjacent to the extraction site and extrusion of the antagonist tooth. Dental casts were obtained before appliance installation (T0), after 3 months (T1) and after 6 months (T2). Digital dental casts were measured using Dolphin 3D software. Chi-square, t test or Mann-Whitney and ANOVA or Friedman test were used for intra- and intergroup comparisons (P < .05). RESULTS Baseline characteristics were similar between groups except for chronological age. Statistically, but not clinically significant space loss (mean, 0.32 mm; SD, ± 0.39) occurred with the vacuum-formed space maintainer only at the first trimester (T0-T1). Lingual rolling and axial rotation of the first permanent molar were not significant, as well as extrusion of the antagonist tooth. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggested that both tested devices were effective in maintaining space after early extraction of the deciduous second molar over a period of 6 months.

Abstract
Each year, congenital defects, trauma or cancer often results in considerable physical disfigurement for many people worldwide. This adversely impacts their psychological, social and economic outlook, leading to poor life experiences and negative health outcomes. In many cases of soft tissue disfigurement, highly personalized prostheses are available to restore both aesthetics and function. As discussed in part A of this review, key to the success of any soft tissue prosthetic is the fundamental properties of the materials. This determines the maximum attainable level of aesthetics, attachment mechanisms, fabrication complexity, cost, and robustness. Since the early-mid 20th century, polymers have completely replaced natural materials in prosthetics, with advances in both material properties and fabrication techniques leading to significantly improved capabilities. In part A, we discussed the history of polymers in prosthetics, their ideal properties, and the application of polymers in prostheses for the ear, nose, eye, breast and finger. We also reviewed the latest developments in advanced manufacturing and 3D printing, including different fabrication technologies and new and upcoming materials. In this review, Part B, we detail the chemistry of the most commonly used synthetic polymers in soft tissue prosthetics; silicone, acrylic resin, vinyl polymer, and polyurethane elastomer. For each polymer, we briefly discuss their history before detailing their chemistry and fabrication processes. We also discuss degradation of the polymer in the context of their application in prosthetics, including time and weathering, the impact of skin secretions, microbial growth and cleaning and disinfecting. Although advanced manufacturing promises new fabrication capabilities using exotic synthetic polymers with programmable material properties, silicones and acrylics remain the most commonly used materials in prosthetics today. As research in this field progresses, development of new variations and fabrication techniques based on these synthetic polymers will lead to even better and more robust soft tissue prosthetics, with improved life-like aesthetics and lower cost manufacturing.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM If the components in the acrylic resins used to fabricate interim crows are cytotoxic, they can interfere with the integrity of the adjacent periodontal tissue and the dentin-pulp complex. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the cytotoxicity of resin-based materials used to prepare interim crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS The following materials were used in this study: CAR, conventional acrylic resin powder and liquid; BR, bis-acrylic resin; and PAR, pressed acrylic resin of the CAD-CAM type. Glass disks were used as the control (Co). Oral epithelial cells (NOK) were seeded on glass disks and standardized disks prepared with the resins under study. After incubation for 24 hours, the cells were analyzed for viability (Alamar Blue and Live or Dead), adhesion, and morphology (SEM and fluorescence), as well as epidermal growth factor synthesis (EGF-ELISA). The surface roughness (Ra) of test specimens was evaluated under a confocal microscope. The data were submitted to ANOVA and the Tukey HSD statistical tests (α=.05). RESULTS The highest Ra value was observed in BR in comparison with CAR, PAR, and Co (P<.05). The highest viability, adhesion, and EGF synthesis values were determined for the cells in contact with PAR (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS The computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM)-type resin favored adhesion, metabolism, and epithelial cell proliferation, and it was therefore considered cytocompatible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to evaluate the cytocompatibility of three provisional restoration materials and predict neurotoxic potential of their monomers. These materials are Tab 2000® (methyl methacrylate based), ProTemp 4™ (bis-acrylic based) and Structur 3® (urethane dimethacrylate based). MATERIALS AND METHODS Resin samples were incubated in a cell culture medium and the cytotoxic effects of these extracts were studied in 3T3 fibroblast cells through MTT and crystal violet assays as well as ROS assessment. The presence of relevant leached monomers was determined by HPLC. Additionally, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability to these resin-based monomers was predicted using ACD/Labs algorithms model. RESULTS Cell survival rates were compared with the resin extracts, and Structur 3® was statistically significant different from the others (p < 0.001) at all-time incubation periods. All materials induced a dose-dependent loss of cell viability; however, only Structur 3 extracts were cytotoxic against 3T3 fibroblasts. The highest cytotoxic effect (77%, p < 0.001) was observed at 24 h incubation period, which may be associated with the presence of urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) leached monomers. Furthermore, the computational model showed that most monomers under study are expectedly capable of crossing the BBB. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that Structur 3® is not cytocompatible with our cell model and UDMA is a potential neurotoxic compound. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These results indicate that only ProTemp 4™ and Tab 2000® are safe for provisional restorations.

Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of various denture base materials following four different aging periods. Methods: In total, 48 disc-shaped specimens per each group were prepared: Group I: acrylic resin polymerized in cool water and heated up to 100°C over 45 min and boiled for 15 min; Group II: acrylic resin polymerized under pressure in 40°C–45°C water bath for 10 min; Group III: autopolymerized hard relining resin Cold Liner Rebase; Group IV: autopolymerized hard relining resin Truliner; Group V: soft relining resin DentuSil. Then the specimens were stored in water for 24 h or 15 days, or thermocycled 2500 times or 10,000 times. Cytotoxicity was evaluated with 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay using L929 cells after 72-h cell incubation. Cell viability percentages were counted and statistical analyses were performed. The results were also evaluated according to ISO standard 10993-5. Results: All materials showed similar cell viability percentages following 24-h water storage and 2500 and 10,000 thermal cycles. Following 15-day water storage, a statistically significant difference was observed between the materials. Comparisons of the aging periods for each material showed statistically significant differences. Groups III and IV showed moderately cytotoxic effect following 15-day water storage. The remaining groups showed slightly cytotoxic or non-cytotoxic effect. Discussion: Polymerizing acrylic resins under pressure can be an alternative to conventional polymerizing to ensure a faster denture repair while providing similar cell viability values. Heat-cured acrylic resins provide higher cell viability than hard chairside lining materials in a 15-day period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of Haas appliances through micronuclei test and cytogenetic damage analysis in buccal mucosa epithelial cells of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-eight patients, 6-12 years of age and of both genders, who required a Haas appliance for the correction of a posterior crossbite were included. Epithelial cells from the mucosa were collected by gently scraping the inside of both the right and left cheeks. The cells were collected before the insertion of the appliance (T0), 1 month after the device was installed (T1), and again 3 months after the appliance was immobilized (T2). The cells were processed to obtain slides. Feulgen/Fast Green was used as the staining method, and the number of normal, karyolytic, pyknotic, nuclear buds, bi/trinucleated, and micronucleus cells were counted under light microscopy. Cellular abnormalities were evaluated with parametric and nonparametric tests for comparison of the means by analysis of variance testing, Tukey posttest, or the Kruskal-Wallis test and then by Dunn's posttest. The significance level was 5%. RESULTS There were no statistically significant changes in the micronuclei in the evaluated periods ( P > .05). Nuclear buds increased at T1 ( P < .05), returning to baseline levels at T2. Other abnormalities (cariolytic, pyknotic, and bi/trinucleated cells) showed a significant increase at T1 and T2 ( P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS The Haas appliance did not cause an increase in micronuclei in cells of the buccal mucosa. However, statistically significant increases in cariolytic, pyknotic, and bi/trinucleated cells were observed during treatment, suggesting possible DNA damage.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Implant-retained maxillofacial prostheses should be biocompatible, regardless of the primers and adhesives used to bond the acrylic resin and facial silicone. The authors are unaware of any study evaluating the influence of these primers and adhesives on the biocompatibility of maxillofacial prostheses. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of primers and an adhesive used to bond acrylic resin and facial silicone during the fabrication of implant-retained maxillofacial prostheses. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-eight circular specimens made of resin and silicone were fabricated, either bonded or nonbonded with primer and adhesive. The specimens were divided into 7 groups: resin; silicone; resin+silastic medical adhesive type A+silicone; resin+DC 1205 primer silicone; resin+Sofreliner primer+silicone; resin+DC 1205 primer+silastic medical adhesive type A+silicone; and resin+Sofreliner primer+silastic medical adhesive type A+silicone. Eluates of the materials tested were prepared by setting 4 specimens of each experimental group in Falcon tubes with medium and incubating at 37°C for 24 hours. The eluate cytotoxicity was evaluated by an assay of survival/proliferation ((3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide [MTT] test) in cultures of human keratinocytes. The levels of IL1, IL6, TNFα, and the chemokine MIP-1α were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The mRNA expressions for MMP-9, TGF-β, and collagen type IV were analyzed by the real time polymerase chain reaction. Data were submitted to analysis of variance with Bonferroni post hoc tests (α=.05). RESULTS An increased cell proliferation was observed for the RAS group, with statistically significant differences (P<.001) compared with the unstimulated group. The RDCpS group showed the highest IL6 concentration values (P<.001). No significant statistical difference was found in the relative quantification of mRNA for collagen type IV, MMP9, or TGFβ between the groups (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS The RAS group showed the highest cell proliferation percentage, while the RDCpS group exhibited the highest IL6 concentration values. No detectable levels of IL1β, TNF α, or CCL3/MIP1α were observed. The tested materials showed no toxic effects on the HaCaT cell line.

Abstract
AIM Polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) is commonly used primarily for baseplates of orthodontic appliances (BOA). The activities of cariogenic bacteria in biofilm on these surfaces may contribute to dental caries, gingival inflammation and periodontal disease. The PMMA incorporated with nanoparticles of silver (NanoAg-I-PMMA) and NanoAg in situ in PMMA (NanoAg-IS-PMMA) have been shown to control the growth of cariogenic bacteria, but clinical trial of anti-cariogenic application of these novel materials in orthodontics has not been evaluated. The main aim of the study is to compare the clinical effectiveness of using NanoAg-IS-PMMA and NanoAg-I-PMMA for construction of new BOA in inhibiting the planktonic growth and biofilm formation of the cariogenic bacteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty four patients with a median age of 12.6 years (7-15) harboring Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus and Lactobacillus acidophilus as well as Lactobacillus casei participated in the randomized, double-blind, cross-over study. The experimental BOA, NanoAg-IS-BOA and NanoAg-I-BOA, contained 0.5% w/w NanoAg while the control BOA was standard PMMA. Antibacterial effect of NanoAg-IS-BOA and NanoAg-I-BOA was assessed against test cariogenic bacteria by planktonic and biofilm bacterial cells growth inhibition. RESULTS The average levels of test cariogenic bacteria in saliva decreased about 2 to 70 fold (30.9-98.4%) compared to baseline depending on the microorganism type and test BOA. Biofilm inhibition analysis demonstrated that NanoAg-I-BOA and NanoAg-IS-BOA inhibited the biofilm of all test bacteria by 20.1 to 79.9% compared to BOA. NanoAg-IS-BOA had a strong anti-biofilm effect against S. mutans, S. sobrinus and L. casei. However, NanoAg-I-BOA showed only slight anti-biofilm effects on test bacteria. Most notably, at all period of the clinical trial, NanoAg-IS-BOA showed a higher antibacterial activity than NanoAg-I-BOA. CONCLUSION Based on the novel data that presented here, the NanoAg-IS-BOA had strong antimicrobial activity in the planktonic phase and subsequent biofilm formation of the cariogenic bacteria. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Wearing of NanoAg-IS-BOA has the potential to minimize dental plaque formation and caries during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro cytotoxicity of
acrylic resins of different colors over time. Methods Specimens were divided into 4 groups (n = 6) according to the color of the acrylic
resin (Orto Class, Clássico, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil): Group 1: clear acrylic
resin; group 2: pink acrylic resin; group 3: blue acrylic resin and group 4: green
acrylic resin. All specimens were fabricated according to the mass manipulation
technique and submitted to mechanical polishing protocol. The control was
performed with an amalgam specimen (C+), a glass specimen (C-) and cell control
(CC). Specimens were immersed in Minimum Eagle's Medium (MEM) and incubated for 24
h at 37ºC. The extracts from the experimental material were filtered and mixed
with L929 fibroblast. Cytotoxicity was evaluated at 4 different times, 24, 48, 72
and 168 h. After contact, cells were incubated for 24 h and added to 100 µ of
0.01% neutral red dye. The cells were incubated for 3 h for pigment incorporation
and fixed. Cells viability was determined by a spectroscopic (BioTek, Winooski,
Vermont, USA) with a 492-nm wavelength λ=492 nm). Results There were no statistical differences between the experimental groups and the CC
and C- groups. Conclusion Clear, pink, blue and green self-curing acrylic resins fabricated by means of the
mass manipulation technique and mechanically polished are not cytotoxic. Neither
the pigment added to the self-curing acrylic resin nor the factor of time
influenced the cytotoxicity of the material.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Interim acrylic resins release agents that alter cytokine expression in the surrounding tissues, which could alter extracellular matrix degradation. PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to evaluate the responses of human epidermal keratinocytes to eluates of interim acrylic resins in regards to cytokine expression and cell-mediated collagen degradation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Specimens of 4 different interim acrylic resins (HI-I, Jet Acrylic, SNAP acrylic, and Protemp Plus) were placed in Epilife medium for 48 hours and the eluates collected. The cells were incubated for 72 hours in nontoxic concentrations of the eluates. Cytotoxicity was evaluated with lactate dehydrogenase assays and cytokine expression with cytokine antibody arrays. Collagen degradation was determined with a collagen type I assay. The experiments were performed 3 times. Data were analyzed with 1-way and mixed-model ANOVA (α=.05). RESULTS None of the eluates were cytotoxic. Cytokine expression from the heat-activated polymethyl methacrylate resin group was significantly less for interleukin-3, but significantly greater for interlukin-7. Expression for the chemically activated polymethyl methacrylate resin group was significantly less for growth-regulated oncogene-α, interleukin-1α, and interleukin-3. Expression for the chemically activated polyethyl methacrylate resin group was significantly less for interleukin-1α and interleukin-3, but significantly greater for interleukin-13 and monocytes chemoattractant protein-3. The cytokine expression induced by chemically activated bis-acryl composite resin was significantly greater for granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, interleukin-7, and monocytes chemoattractant protein-3, but significantly less for growth-regulated oncogene-α. Collagen degradation was not significantly different in any of the groups. CONCLUSIONS The eluates used were not cytotoxic and did not induce cell-mediated collagen degradation. Some significant changes in cytokine expression were noted.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity induced by orthodontic bands through survival tests on Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a microorganism that presents several genetic and biochemical characteristics similar to human cells. Three groups of bands were evaluated: silver soldered (SSB), laser soldered (LSB), and bands without any solder (WSB). Yeast cells were directly exposed to the bands and indirectly, when a previous elution of the metals in artificial saliva was performed. The negative control was composed of yeast cells or artificial saliva not exposed to any kind of metal. In the direct exposure experiments, all tested groups of bands induced a slight reduction in yeast viability compared to the control. This effect was more intense for the SSB, although not statistically significant. For the indirect exposure experiments, the SSB induced a statistically significant decrease in cell viability compared to the LSB. There were no significant differences between the survival rates of the negative control and the LSB group in both direct and saliva tests. SSBs were cytotoxic, whilst LSBs were not, confirming that laser soldering may be a more biocompatible alternative for use in connecting wires to orthodontic appliances.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was to assess different auto-curing resins based on methylmethacrylate (MMA) and new light-curing resins based on urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) regarding the residual monomers remaining in the resin and their elution over time. Specimens from three auto-curing and three light-curing resins were produced following the manufacturer's instructions. The concentration of residual MMA and UDMA monomers present in the resins as well as the quantity of the residual monomers released into artificial saliva solution after immersion times of 1, 3, and 7 days were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and the post hoc Student-Newman-Keuls test. The highest and lowest amounts of residual monomers were found in the group of light-curing resins (p<0.05). The light-curing resins Triad Trans Sheet (0.06 wt%) and Primosplint (0.06 wt%) released over the entire immersion time of 7 days the smallest (p<0.05) quantity of UDMA. These two light-curing resins based on UDMA exhibited lower elution of residual monomers than auto-curing resins (MMA). The elution characteristics of the residual monomers do not seem to correlate with the residual monomer concentration in resins. These observations demonstrate that the quantitative determination of residual monomers alone - as required by the ISO specification 20795-1 - does not seem to be sufficient for an assessment of the biological properties of different resins. Instead, the evaluation of elution characteristics appears to be of higher clinical relevance.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and degree of monomer conversion of resin-reinforced glass ionomer cements (RGIC) over different time periods. Four RGICs: Fuji Ortho LC (FOLC), Fuji Ortho Band (FOB), Orthoglass (OGL), and Multicure Glass Ionomer (MCI) were evaluated for cytotoxicity in fibroblastic L929 cells and for their degree of monomer conversion over different time periods. Three control groups were also analysed: positive control (C+), consisting of Tween 80 cell detergent; negative control (C-), consisting of phosphate-buffered saline; and cell control (CC), consisting of cells exposed to any material. To evaluate the cytotoxicity, the dye-uptake technique was used and the degree of conversion was evaluated using infrared spectroscopy. The data obtained were analysed by analysis of variance and the Tukey's test. The results showed cytotoxicity of the RGICs at 1 and 24 hours; the viability values of these materials were statistically different from the C- and CC groups (P < 0.05). After 48 hours, the FOLC group was statistically similar to the CC and C- groups but different from the others. At 1 hour, there was no difference in the degree of conversion between the FOLC and OGL groups (P > 0.05) or between the FOB and MCI (P < 0.05) groups. However, at 48 hours, the FOLC group had greater conversion values than the other groups (P < 0.05). There is a direct relationship between the degree of conversion and RGIC cytotoxicity. Following initial polymerization, cytotoxicity decreases and, consequently, the degree of conversion of the material increases.
