Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vascular calcifications, primarily in the aorta and its proximal branches, are commonly observed among subjects with impaired bone health. In this study, we sought to determine if a comparable association holds true for the calcifications in the intracranial internal carotid arteries (IICA), in general and also for particular calcification patterns. METHODS A consecutive series of ischemic stroke patients were prospectively enrolled into the study, where computed tomography angiography source images were used to determine the presence and type of IICA calcifications, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to determine the bone mineral density in the left femoral neck region. IICA calcifications were categorized as none, intimal, medial, and mixed types based on previously validated classification schemes. Their relationships with femoral bone T-scores were evaluated by bivariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS Femoral neck T-score was highest among patients without any vascular calcifications (n=65), when compared to the bone density measures among patients with any type of calcification (n=185) (p<0.001). After adjustment for age, gender, vascular risk factors, and serum biomarkers related to bone health, the T-score remained significantly associated only with the pattern of intimal calcification [OR 0.63 (0.42 - 0.95), p=0.028]. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the intracranial vasculature, in particular the internal carotid arteries, is not immune to the interplay between suboptimal bone health and vascular calcifications. This association was most robust for an intimal type of IICA calcification pattern, while no such relationship could be demonstrated for other types of vascular calcifications.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the associations between osteoporosis, biochemical indexes, bone mineral density (BMD), and cardiovascular disease. Methods A cross-sectional study design was used to examine the relationships between these parameters. Logistic regression and correlation analyses were conducted to assess the associations between elevated levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), homocysteine, and the presence of osteoporosis. Additionally, correlations between BMD and biochemical indexes were analyzed. The incidence of cardiovascular disease and its correlation with BMD were evaluated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to determine the utility of BMD in identifying cardiovascular disease. Results The results revealed that elevated triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL levels were positively associated with osteoporosis, while higher HDL levels and homocysteine were negatively associated. Correlation analysis demonstrated negative correlations between triglyceride levels and BMD, and positive correlations between total cholesterol and HDL levels with BMD. LDL levels showed a weak negative correlation, and homocysteine levels exhibited a strong negative correlation with BMD. The osteoporosis group had lower BMD and a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease compared to the non-osteoporosis group. Logistic regression analysis confirmed the correlation between lower BMD and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Conclusion This study provides evidence supporting the associations between osteoporosis, biochemical indexes, BMD, and cardiovascular disease. Aberrations in lipid profiles and homocysteine levels may contribute to osteoporosis development. Lower BMD, particularly in individuals with osteoporosis, appears to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. BMD shows promise as a diagnostic tool for identifying individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and establish the clinical implications of these relationships. Future longitudinal studies are necessary to determine causality and long-term prognostic implications.

Abstract
Bone defects are a common bone disease, which are usually caused by accidents, trauma and tumors. However, the treatment of bone defects is still a great clinical challenge. In recent years, research on bone repair materials has continued with great success, but there are few reports on the repair of bone defects at a high lipid level. Hyperlipidemia is a risk factor in the process of bone defect repair, which has a negative impact on the process of osteogenesis, increasing the difficulty of bone defect repair. Therefore, it is necessary to find materials that can promote bone defect repair under the condition of hyperlipidemia. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been applied in the fields of biology and clinical medicine for many years and developed to modulate osteogenic differentiation and adipogenic differentiation. In vitro and vivo studies displayed that they promoted bone formation and inhibited fat accumulation. Further, the metabolism and mechanisms of AuNPs acting on osteogenesis/adipogenesis were partially revealed by researchers. This review further clarifies the role of AuNPs in osteogenic/adipogenic regulation during the process of osteogenesis and bone regeneration by summarizing the related in vitro and in vivo research, discussing the advantages and challenges of AuNPs and highlighting several possible directions for future research, with the aim to provide a new strategy for dealing with bone defects in hyperlipidemic patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The relationship between coronary artery calcification and bone mineral density (BMD) in T2DM is still unclear. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between coronary artery calcium score (CACs) and BMD in T2DM with different visceral fat area (VFA), and further to explore the clinical significance of CACs in predicting osteoporosis in T2DM patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 479 T2DM patients aged ≥50 years were included. Agatston was applied to calculate CACs to evaluate the degree of coronary artery calcification. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to measure BMD. According to VFA, all subjects were divided into VFA <100cm2 and VFA ≥100cm2 group. Adjusted regression analysis was performed to analyze the association between CACs and BMD. ROC curve was used to analyze the optimal cut-off value of CACs for screening osteoporosis. RESULTS The baseline showed that in VFA ≥100cm2 group, CACs increased significantly than that in VFA <100cm2 group (212.1±195.9 vs 139.3±141.8, p<0.001) and total hip BMD decreased obviously (0.968±0.19 vs 1.021±0.184, p=0.01). After multivariable adjustment, CACs was not significantly associated with BMD in all patients (p>0.05). However, CACs was negatively associated with BMD of total hip and lumbar spine in patients with VFA ≥100cm2 (total hip β=-0.087 p=0.01; lumbar spine β=-0.052 p=0.005), but not VFA <100cm2. ROC curve analysis showed that the optimal cut-off value of CACs for screening osteoporosis was 191.505. CONCLUSION The present study implied that associations between CACs and BMD varied by the visceral fat deposition. It is critical to evaluate the condition of visceral fat accumulation for exploring the complex interplay of coronary artery calcification and BMD in T2DM patients. It may be of some clinical value for CACs in predicting osteoporosis in T2DM with visceral obesity.

Abstract
Aims: We aimed to assess the association between dietary inflammation index (DII) and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) in US adults aged ≥40 years. Methods: Data were obtained from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants who were <40 years old and missing the data of DII and AAC were excluded. DII was calculated based on a 24-h dietary recall interview for each participant. AAC score was quantified by assessing lateral spine images and severe AAC was defined as AAC score >6. Weighted multivariable regression analysis and subgroup analysis were preformed to estimate the independent relationship between DII with AAC score and severe AAC. Results: A total of 2,897 participants were included with the mean DII of -0.17 ± 2.80 and the mean AAC score of 1.462 ± 3.290. The prevalence of severe AAC was 7.68% overall, and participants in higher DII quartile tended to have higher rates of severe AAC (Quartile 1: 5.03%, Quartile 2: 7.44%, Quartile 3: 8.38%, Quartile 4: 10.46%, p = 0.0016). A positive association between DII and AAC score was observed (β = 0.055, 95% CI: 0.010, 0.101, p = 0.01649), and higher DII was associated with an increased risk of severe AAC (OR = 1.067, 95% CI: 1.004, 1.134, p = 0.03746). Subgroup analysis indicated that this positive association between DII and AAC was similar in population with differences in gender, age, BMI, hypertension status, and diabetes status and could be appropriate for different population settings. Conclusion: Higher pro-inflammatory diet was associated with higher AAC score and increased risk of severe AAC. Anti-inflammatory dietary management maybe beneficial to reduce the risk of AAC.

Abstract
Aim. To study associations between calcification of the coronary arteries (CA), the state of the peripheral vascular wall and bone strength indices.Material and methods. In a cross-sectional study were included 200 women at the age 45-69 y.o. who were observed on an outpatient basis and signed informed consent. A survey was conducted on the presence of cardiovascular risk factors and the risk of fractures. The intima-media thickness (IMT), the presence and number of atherosclerotic plaques (AP) were studied using duplex scanning. Pulse wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index (AI) were measured by applanation tonometry. The presence of calcium deposits in coronary vessels was determined by multispiral computed tomography (MSCT) using the Agatston index. The bone mineral density (BMD) of the spine, hip neck (HN) and proximal hip (PH) was measured using double energy x-ray absorptiometry. The marker of bone resorption C-terminal telopeptide of type-1 collagen (СТх) was determined in blood serum by the β-crosslaps method.Results. There was a positive correlation between the parameters of vascular stiffness, subclinical atherosclerosis of peripheral vessels and CA calcification: AI and calcium index (r=0.25, p<0.05), IMT and calcium index (r=0.23, p<0.05), presence of AP and calcium index (r=0.26, p<0.05). The PWV increased as the calcium index increased, but the correlation remained at the trend level. Women with low bone mass had higher PWV (p<0.05), AI (p<0.01), IMT (p<0.02), CTx level (p<0.001) and a higher number of AP than those with normal BMD. CTx was inversely correlated with PWV and calcium index (p<0.05). Based on multivariate linear regression analysis (adjusted for age, menopause duration, low body weight, smoking factor and total cholesterol) the independent nature of the relationship between the Agatstone index and BMD in all the measured parts of the skeleton, between AI and BMD of HN, and between IMT and BMD of HN was confirmed. The relationship between the marker of bone resorption CTx and BMD of the spine and PH remained highly reliable.Conclusion. The correlation of stiffness indices and subclinical atherosclerosis of peripheral arteries, which is a predictor of high risk of cardiovascular events, allows to suggest an important role of changes in the peripheral vascular wall in increasing cardiovascular risk. A decrease in BMD and an increase in the marker of bone resorption, associated with an increase in indices of vascular stiffness and subclinical atherosclerosis and, especially, CA calcification, allows us to think about the common mechanisms of development and progression of atherosclerosis and osteoporosis. Therefore, early examination of women with a high cardiovascular risk, assessed by the SCORE scale, after 45 years and before menopause to detect vascular rigidity and the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis, and performing x-ray densitometry for individuals with changes in these indices will allow stratify the risks of atherosclerosis and osteoporosis complications and recommend preventive use of drugs that reduce vascular rigidity and increase BMD.

Decreased bone mineral density and osteoporotic fractures are associated with the development of echogenic plaques in the carotid arteries over a 10-year follow-up period: The Japanese Population-based Osteoporosis (JPOS) Cohort Study. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether low bone mineral density (BMD) and history of fracture at baseline are associated with the development of echogenic carotid plaques over a 10-year follow-up period. STUDY DESIGN A prospective cohort study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Development of echogenic plaques identified by ultrasonography of the carotid arteries. METHODS Among 1048 women aged 40 or more who completed the baseline survey of the Japanese Population-based Osteoporosis (JPOS) cohort study, 500 women who completed the first decade of follow-up and 267 women who completed the second decade of follow-up were included. We identified history and incidence of clinical osteoporotic fracture during the follow-up through medical interviews, and determined vertebral fractures by morphometry of absorptiometric images. RESULTS We identified 67 (13.4%) and 31 (11.6%) women with echogenic plaques at the end of first and second decade of follow-up, respectively. Participants with echogenic plaques were significantly older, exhibited lower spine BMD, and had a higher prevalence of osteoporotic fracture, diabetes, and hypertension. A generalized estimating equation analysis was used to combine the participants from the two follow-up periods into a single cohort, and showed that osteoporotic BMD and osteoporotic fractures were significantly associated with the development of echogenic plaques, after adjusting for atherosclerosis risk factors (odds ratio (OR): 2.15, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.04, 4.44; OR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.03, 3.28, respectively). CONCLUSION Osteoporotic BMD and osteoporotic fracture history were significantly, and independently, associated with an increased occurrence of echogenic plaques. Ultrasonographic screening of the carotid artery may benefit patients with osteoporosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular events (CVEs) was considered as one of the primary cause to reduce the quality of life in breast cancer patients with aromatase inhibitors (AIs) treatment, which has not been sufficiently addressed. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between risk of CVEs and AIs in patients with breast cancer. METHODS Included studies were obtained from the databases of Embase, Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials.gov, and reference lists. The main outcome measures were overall incidence, odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Furthermore, the association and the risk differences among different tumor types, AIs,ages,or treatment regimens were conducted. Fixed-effect or random-effect models were applied in the statistical analyses according to the heterogeneity. Our analysis was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. RESULTS Seventeen studies, which included 44,411 subjects, were included in our analyses. The overall incidence of CVEs in AIs group was 13.02% (95% CI: 8.15-20.17%) and almost all of the high-grade CVEs occurred in patients treated with AIs. The pooled ORs of CVEs was 0.9940 (95% CI: 0.8545-1.1562). Under sub-group analysis, the incidence of CVEs related to exemestane was higher than that of controls (OR = 1.1564, 95% CI: 1.0656-1.2549), but no statistical differences in risk of CVEs were found in other sub-group analysis. No evidence of publication bias was found for incidence of CVEs in our meta-analysis by a funnel plot. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that patients with breast cancer treated with AIs do not have a significant risk of developing CVEs in comparison with the controls, and exemestane might not be considered as the alternative AI to the breast cancer patients from the perspective of CVEs. Further studies are recommended to investigate this association and the risk differences among different tumor types, AIs or treatment regimens.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between low bone mass and the risk of carotid calcification plaques in Chinese postmenopausal women.Methods: We conducted a 5 years prospective study. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning. Carotid computed tomography angiography (CTA) was conducted using a 64-multidetector row scanner to assess carotid arterial plaque at baseline and during follow-up. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to evaluate the association of BMD and risk of carotid calcification plaques.Results: Four hundred and eighty-eight women sustained prospective carotid plaques during the follow-up. Women with carotid calcification plaques had low BMD than those with carotid non-calcification plaques. After adjustment for potential confounders, BMD, age, years since menopause, levels of plasma osteoprotegerin and adiponectin, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia were independently associated with increased risk of carotid calcification plaques. For carotid calcification plaques, a significant inverse correlation was indicated between BMD and the plaques, and a significant positive correlation was indicated between bone loss and plaques.Conclusions: This study suggested that lower BMD and increased loss rate of BMD were associated with a higher risk of carotid calcification plaques in Chinese postmenopausal women.
