Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report on the management and outcomes of two dogs treated with osseointegrated prosthesis for pelvic-limb salvage. STUDY DESIGN Short case series. SAMPLE POPULATION Two client-owned large breed dogs with distal tibial amputation due to neonatal and iatrogenic trauma. METHODS Preoperative computed tomography (CT) was performed to assess tibial medullary length and width. A custom-made intramedullary prosthesis was implanted and attached to a 3D-printed external prosthesis simulating a foot. Postoperative care included bandaging and regular chlorhexidine washes. Postoperative monitoring included clinical evaluation, owners' assessment of function and radiographs. RESULTS Both dogs regained good use of the operated limb within 3 weeks of surgery. Osseointegration and bone remodelling around the implants were noted on radiographs, with no evidence of loosening or implant migration observed. Mild serosanguinous discharge at the cutaneous-implant interface was observed in the early postoperative period, resolving without intervention. Progressive osteolysis around the implants was detected on radiographs in both dogs by 22 months. Though osteomyelitis is suspected, both dogs were using the limb adequately and had satisfactory quality of life at more than 36 months after surgery. A consistent hygiene routine is suspected to delay this process and should theoretically prolong the lifespan of these implants. CONCLUSION This osseointegrated implant system allowed dogs with traumatic loss of the hindpaw to regain normal clinical function of their pelvic limb for 3 years. Occasional soft tissue infections of the stoma sites were observed, but were easily managed, and long-term (36 month) follow-up suggests durability of the prosthesis. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE These results justify further studies in a larger cohort to assess the long-term durability of osseointegrated prostheses as a single-stage strategy to treat partial limb amputation.

Abstract
Limb-sparing techniques for appendicular primary bone tumors are still associated with a high rate of complications. Three-dimensional (3D)-printed patient-specific instruments could reduce these complications. The aim of this study is to describe a limb-sparing surgery using 3D-printed patient-specific guides (PSGs) and an endoprosthesis (PSE) to treat femoral chondrosarcoma in a dog. An eight-year-old female Golden Retriever presented with persistent lameness of the right hind limb, reluctance to move and difficulty in maintaining a standing position. Palpation of the right femur revealed an approximately 4 cm painful lesion. Cytological analysis of the needle aspiration supported the clinical and radiological suggestion of a cartilaginous bone neoplasm. Computed tomography (CT) scans suggested the presence of an aggressive lesion on the right distal femur. CT scans of the femur and tibia were then reconstructed using a bone tissue algorithm and processed with computer-aided design (CAD) software, which allowed for performing virtual surgical planning (VSP) and the fabrication of both the PSG and the PSE. Anti-inflammatory drugs and monoclonal antibodies were used for pain management while waiting for surgery. Adjuvant chemotherapy was also administered. An ostectomy of the distal third of the femur to completely remove the tumor was performed with the designed PSG, while the bone defect was filled with the designed PSE. Histopathological examination of the osteotomized bone segment confirmed a grade 2 central chondrosarcoma. There was no excessive tumor growth during the 28 days between the CT scans and surgery. Both PSG and PSE fitted perfectly to the bone surfaces. PSG eliminated the need for intraoperative imaging and ensured a faster and more accurate osteotomy. PSE optimized load sharing and eliminated the complications of the commercial endoprosthesis, such as incongruity and the need for manual intraoperative adjustment. Overall, the use of VSP, 3D-printed PSG and PSE significantly reduced surgical time, risk of infection and intra- and postoperative complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reports describing sciatic nerve injuries (SNI) and their outcome are scarce in veterinary medicine. HYPOTHESIS Describe the causes of traumatic and iatrogenic SNI and evaluate which clinical and electrodiagnostic findings predict outcome. ANIMALS Thirty-eight dogs and 10 cats with confirmed SNI referred for neurologic and electrodiagnostic evaluation. METHODS Clinical and electrodiagnostic examination results, including electromyography (EMG), motor nerve conduction studies, muscle-evoked potential (MEP), F-waves, sensory nerve conduction studies, and cord dorsum potential (CDP), were retrospectively evaluated. Quality of life (QoL) was assessed based on owner interviews. RESULTS Surgery (42%) and trauma (33%) were the most common causes of SNI; in dogs, 24% were caused by bites from wild boars. Ability to flex and extend the tarsus was significantly associated with positive outcome in dogs. Mean time from onset of clinical signs until electrodiagnostic evaluation was 67 ± 65 (range, 7-300) days and 65 ± 108 (range, 7-365) days for dogs and cats, respectively. A cut-off amplitude of 1.45 mV for compound motor action potentials (CMAP) was predictive of positive outcome in dogs (P = .01), with sensitivity of 58% and specificity of 100%. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Clinical motor function predicts recovery better than sensory function. Electrodiagnostic findings also may play a role in predicting the outcome of SNI. Application of the proposed CMAP cut-off amplitude may assist clinicians in shortening the time to reassessment or for earlier suggestion of salvage procedures. Owners perceived a good quality of life (QoL), even in cases of hindlimb amputation.

Abstract
Simple Summary Currently, more owners look for offering a better quality of life to their pets. In fact, the complete limb amputation seems to be the last option considered by pet owners in surgeries to save their pets’ lives. Although this field is under development in veterinary medicine, we believe that 3D-printed implants for this market sector will improve the advancement in its research by reducing production costs. This would allow the pet owners to select this solution without large expenses, allowing at the same time, advances in this field. For this purpose, mechanical tests have been carried out on implants printed in a high-performance plastic that resembles the resistance of metals—that are traditionally used in veterinary surgery—and the properties of dogs’ bones as well. The results obtained have confirmed that the implants could withstand the dog weight in its different gaits, although further comparative studies on the effect of rotation forces applied during the animal’s change of direction (evaluated at different paces) are required to confirm their suitability. Abstract Exo-endoprosthesis is a limb salvage procedure poorly described for animals, as only expensive metal devices have been used so far. Currently, additive manufacturing (AM) can make this type of implant affordable by exploring a wide new range of materials. However, safety factors should be considered and could be related to kinetic and kinematic studies of canine natural gaits. The suitability of a novel inner part of an exo-endoprosthesis manufactured by fuse deposition modeling (FDM) was assessed for long canine bones with an elliptical medullary canal. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) was the material used as an alternative to metal for veterinary traumatology. Poisson’s ratio of 3D-printed PEEK material and ex vivo mechanical tests of the customized endoprosthesis were performed for the evaluation. The customized endoprostheses had promising outcomes for the radii of 20 kg dogs. Quasistatic mechanical tests of bone-inserted endoprostheses—pure compression tests—reached a maximum force of 1045.0 ± 78.0 N. In fatigue tests, the samples reached 500,000 cycles without failure or detriment to their quasistatic results. These outcomes surpass the natural weight-bearing of dogs, even during a galloping pace. Furthermore, torque tests with different adhesives were performed to obtain reference data for future assessments comparing with natural dog movements.

Abstract
Background Limb amputation may be recommended in domestic cats following a severe injury or disease. The purpose of the study was to report the signalment, the complications, recovery outcome, owner satisfaction and expectations of domestic cats following limb amputation. Results Medical records of 3 specialty hospitals were reviewed for cats that received a single limb amputation in a 10 year period (2007–2017). These cat owners were contacted, and 59 owners completed surveys, comprising the study population. The most common reasons for limb amputation were neoplasia (54.2%, 32/59), traumatic injury (40.7%, 24/59), bone or joint infection (3.4%, 2/59), and thromboembolism (1.7%, 1/59). Thirty-four cats (57.6%) had postoperative complications. Of the fifty-nine surveys, 52.5% reported minor complications and 5.1% reported major complications. There were no differences in postoperative complication rates for thoracic versus pelvic limb amputations. All owners reported either excellent (77.9%, 46/59), good (20.3% 12/59), or fair (1.7%, 1/59) satisfaction with the procedure. Based on their previous experiences, 84.7% (50/59) of owners would elect limb amputation if medically warranted for another pet. The remaining 15.3% of owners who would not elect limb amputation again had experienced death of their pet with a median survival time of 183 days. Conclusion Owners reported a positive satisfaction when considering complications, recovery outcome, and expectations. This study can be used by veterinarians to guide cat owners in the decision making process of limb amputation. Abstract
Osteosarcoma represents one of the most common bone tumours in dogs. It commonly occurs in the proximal humerus, the most affected anatomic site. Until recently, amputation or limb-sparing surgery leading to an arthrodesis coupled with chemotherapy were the only available treatments, but they often lead to complications, reduced mobility and highly impact dog’s quality of life. Prototypes of both articulated and monobloc (no mobility) patient-specific endoprostheses have been designed to spare the limb afflicted with osteosarcoma of the proximal humerus. This study focuses on the biomechanical effects of endoprostheses and shoulder muscle kinematics. For each of the endoprosthesis designs, a minimal number of muscles needed to ensure stability and a certain degree of joint movement during walking is sought. A quasi-static study based on an optimization method, the minimization of the sum of maximal muscle stresses, was carried out to assess the contribution of each muscle to the shoulder function. The identification of the most important muscles and their impact on the kinematics of the prosthetic joint lead to an improvement of the endoprosthesis design relevance and implantation feasibility.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence of and risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) following canine thoracic and pelvic limb amputations. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective, multicenter study. ANIMALS Dogs (n = 248). METHODS Medical records were reviewed for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative variables including indication for amputation, amputation type, method of muscle transection, duration of surgery and anesthesia, and wound classification. Follow up was ≥30 days or until SSI development. Logistic regression and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare SSI incidence to variables of interest. RESULTS The incidence of SSI was 12.5% for all procedures and 10.9% for clean procedures. Factors increasing odds of SSI were muscle transection with a bipolar vessel sealing device (P = .023 for all procedures, P = .025 for clean procedures), procedure classified as other than clean (P = .003), and indication for amputation of bacterial infection (P = .041) or traumatic injury (P = .003) compared to neoplasia. CONCLUSION Use of bipolar vessel sealing devices for muscle transection increased the odds of developing an SSI whereas use of electrosurgery and/or sharp transection did not. Dogs with surgical sites that were other than clean, or with bacterial infection and/or traumatic injury were also at increased odds of SSI. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Use of electrosurgery or sharp transection for muscle transection should be considered rather than use of bipolar vessel sealing devices to decrease odds of SSI in dogs undergoing limb amputation. Further studies across a variety of procedures are needed to validate these findings given the increasing popularity of these devices in veterinary medicine.

Abstract
Cancer-induced bone pain, despite its frequency and severity, is a poorly understood phenomenon in people and animals. Despite excitement regarding translational osteosarcoma studies, there is a lack of attention toward examining cancer pain in dogs. In this pilot study, we used a multimodal pain assessment methodology to evaluate pain relief after therapeutic intervention in dogs with primary bone cancer. We hypothesized that intervention would cause objective evidence of pain relief. Evaluations of 8 dogs with primary bone cancer included 18F-FDG PET/CT scans, kinetic analysis, validated owner questionnaires (Canine Brief Pain Inventory, canine BPI), and serum N-telopeptide (NTx) concentration. Dogs were routinely staged and had 18F-FDG PET/CT scans prior to treatment with day 0, 7, 14, and 28 canine BPI, serum NTx, orthopedic exam, and kinetic analysis. Dogs treated with zoledronate and radiation underwent day 28 18F-FDG PET scans. All clinical trial work was approved by the University of Missouri IACUC. Four dogs underwent amputation (AMP) for their appendicular bone tumors; four received neoadjuvant zoledronate and hypofractionated radiation therapy (ZOL+RT). Canine BPI revealed significant improvements in pain severity and pain interference scores compared to baseline for all dogs. Positive changes in peak vertical force (+16.7%) and vertical impulse (+29.1%) were noted at day 28 in ZOL+RT dogs. Dogs receiving ZOL+RT had a significant (at least 30%) reduction in serum NTx from baseline compared to amputated dogs (p = 0.029). SUVmax (p = 0.11) and intensity (p = 0.013) values from PET scans decreased while tumor uniformity (p = 0.017) significantly increased in ZOL+RT-treated tumors; gross tumor volume did not change (p = 0.78). Owner questionnaires, kinetic analysis, and 18F-FDG PET/CT scans showed improved pain relief in dogs receiving ZOL+RT. Serum NTx levels likely do not directly measure pain, but rather the degree of systemic osteoclastic activity. Larger, prospective studies are warranted to identify the ideal objective indicator of pain relief; however, use of multiple assessors is presumably best. With improved assessment of pain severity and relief in dogs with cancer, we can better evaluate the efficacy of our interventions. This could directly benefit people with cancer pain, potentially decreasing the amount of subtherapeutic novel drugs entering human clinical trials.

Abstract
Orthotic devices are an established treatment for neuromusculoskeletal disease in the human population. Orthoses are an emerging veterinary therapy due to limited practitioner experience, availability of devices, and published data from veterinary patient outcomes. Expanding client education and veterinary expertise in the application of orthoses may allow greater access and successful utilization of these devices to treat appendicular disease. While orthoses have the potential to improve quality of life for veterinary patients, consideration needs to be made for owner related factors with device use. Owner satisfaction and experience may greatly impact compliance with treatment recommendations; therefore, it is crucial that owner expectations are met. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate owner-reported outcomes of orthosis for canine patients and their owner's subjective responses about the shared pet/owner experience utilizing a promoter score. It was hypothesized that owner's impressions of their pet's experience with the orthotic device would influence owner perceptions of quality of life for both the owner and the pet, and these factors would impact the likelihood of the owner to recommend a veterinary orthosis to a friend. An anonymous online survey was sent to 136 clients of a single veterinary orthoses manufacturer. Fifty-six surveys were completed and included for analysis. The owner's reported quality of life was in agreement (P = 0.02) with reported pet quality of life. There was also a higher likelihood (P = 0.02) for the owner to recommend a veterinary orthotic device to a friend when owner perceptions of pet quality of life were positive as compared to negative or neutral. Willingness to recommend an experience to a friend is a reflection of satisfaction with the experience. The dependence of owner and pet quality of life should therefore guide therapeutic decisions for patient management and client communication to ensure that the orthosis experience is positive for both patient and owner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop a scale to diagnose and assess the severity of postamputation pain (PAP) in dogs. STUDY DESIGN Single-center retrospective study. ANIMALS A total of 66 dogs that underwent thoracic or pelvic limb amputation and 139 dogs that underwent tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) at a veterinary teaching hospital. METHODS An online survey regarding postoperative behavioral changes was sent to owners. Categorical, multiple-choice responses were entered into a univariable logistic regression model and tested for association with amputation using the Wald test. If p < 0.2, variables were forwarded to a multivariable logistic regression model for manual build. Model simplicity and predictive ability were optimized using the area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) characteristic, and model calibration was assessed using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. The selected model was converted to an integer scale (0-10), the Canine Postamputation Pain (CAMPPAIN) scale. Univariable logistic regression related each dog's calculated score to the probability of PAP. RESULTS Multivariable logistic regression identified four independent predictors of PAP (p < 0.05): 1) restlessness or difficulty sleeping, 2) episodes of panic or anxiety, 3) sudden vocalization, and 4) compulsive grooming of the residual limb. Score AUROC was 0.70 (95% confidence interval = 0.63-0.78) with good calibration (Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic p = 0.82). A score of 2 corresponded to a risk probability of 0.5. Taking a score ≥ 2 to indicate PAP, score specificity and sensitivity were 92.1% and 36.4%, respectively. When this score was used to diagnose PAP, prevalence was 36.4% (24/66) and 7.9% (11/139) in the amputation and TPLO groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Postamputation pain is characterized by specific postoperative behaviors and appears to affect approximately one-third of canine amputees. The CAMPPAIN scale generated from these data could facilitate diagnosis, treatment and further study of PAP but requires external validation.

Abstract
Whether surgical palliative therapy is appropriate for oncologic veterinary patients is an increasing concern as pet age increases because of improved care. In this study, an online survey (available for 30 days), comprising 100 questions with structured response options, was administered to 492 diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS). The survey queried the technical, ethical, social, medical, and financial aspects of surgical palliative therapy for oncologic veterinary patients. Responses were received from 155 ECVS diplomates (31.5%, n = 155/492). Palliative surgery was a relatively common intervention in veterinary oncology, with 50% of respondents (n = 77.5/155) indicating that 75%-100% of oncological surgeries performed were palliative. The presence of metastasis was judged as a key determinant when deciding to perform palliative oncological surgery by 41% of the respondents (n = 63.5/155). The survey revealed that the most commonly performed procedures in palliative oncological surgery were marginal resection, debulking, and amputation. In contrast to human medicine, palliative limb-sparing surgery, stent placement, and embolization were rarely used in veterinary settings, mainly because of a general lack of expertise among veterinarians, elevated costs, and recourse to euthanasia. Taken together, the survey results highlight the need for appropriate guidelines in the field of oncological surgery. To establish general guidelines and direct veterinarians towards the most appropriate judgement, understanding how and what veterinary surgeons manage palliative oncological surgery and how they perceive the main ethical, social, medical, and financial concerns are essential. Such guidelines will lead to better care for ailing animals and will facilitate the path to healing for owners.

Abstract
Mast cell tumor (MCT) or mastocytoma is one of the most frequent malignant cutaneous tumors in the dog, and the second most frequent in the cat. Several mast cell tumor therapeutic approaches have been proposed in the past years for dogs and cats, resulting in very distinct outcomes. The current comprehensive literature review presents a critical approach to the scientific information published about the MCTs treatments and the subsequent prognosis and survival times, in dogs and in cats diagnosed with MCTs. A systematic review of the literature following the Cochrane principles and methodology was performed. The authors resorted to MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of Science databases to select the 133 publications with evidence-based treatments for MCTs in companion animals. Results of the review suggest that the recommended treatment, prognosis and survival times for dogs and cats with MCTs depends at all times on the clinical staging, histological grade and location of the tumor.

Abstract
Limb-sparing for distal radial osteosarcoma has a high rate of complications. Using personalized three-dimensional (3D)-printed implants might improve outcome. The goals of this study were to optimize use of patient-specific, 3D-printed endoprostheses for limb-sparing in dogs in the clinical environment and to report the outcome. This was a pilot study where five client-owned dogs were enrolled. Computed tomography (CT) of the thoracic limbs was performed, which was used to create patient-specific endoprostheses and cutting guides, and repeated on the day of surgery. Intra-arterial (IA) carboplatin was introduced in the clinical management. Limb-sparing was performed. Outcome measures were time required to produce the endoprosthesis and cutting guide, fit between cutting guide and endoprosthesis with host bones, gait analysis, size of the tumour, percent tumour necrosis, complications, disease-free interval (DFI) and survival time (ST). Four dogs received IA carboplatin. Excessive tumour growth between planning CT and surgery did not occur in any dog. The interval between the CT and surgery ranged from 14 to 70 days. Fit between the cutting-guide and endoprosthesis with the host bones was good to excellent. At least one complication occurred in all dogs. Two dogs were euthanized with STs of 192 and 531 days. The other dogs were alive with a follow up of 534 to 575 days. IA chemotherapy is a promising strategy to minimize the risk of excessive tumour growth while waiting for the endoprosthesis and cutting-guide to be made. The design of the cutting-guide was critical for best fit of the endoprosthesis with host bones.

Abstract
Appendicular osteosarcoma (OSA) remains a prevalent musculoskeletal cancer in dogs and definitive local control followed by adjuvant cytotoxic chemotherapy is considered the gold standard approach. Several studies support surgical limb salvage as a means of local control with similar outcomes compared with limb amputation. Complications are well described for limb salvage but little is known of dogs that undergo secondary amputation as a result of complications and outcomes specific to this group. A retrospective analysis of dogs in an institutional primary bone tumour registry was performed to identify dogs diagnosed with histologically confirmed OSA treated with surgical limb salvage with a technique that required an implant to reconstruct the osseous defect. A total of 192 dogs were identified with 31 dogs undergoing secondary amputation representing a limb preservation rate of 84%. A total of 111 dogs were analysed: 31 secondary amputation cases and 80 controls were selected for comparison. The most common reasons for secondary amputation were local recurrence (LR) and surgical site infection (SSI), with odds ratios of 3.6 and 1.7, respectively. Dogs that underwent secondary amputation had a significantly (P = .05) longer median disease specific survival time (ST) (604 days) compared with the control group (385 days). Dogs lived for a median of 205 days beyond secondary amputation and 97% had good functional outcome. Significant independent factors that positively influenced ST were secondary amputation, moderate SSI, severe SSI and age.

Abstract
Introduction: Socket prostheses for treatment of distal limb pathology are becoming increasingly prevalent in veterinary medicine, however, limited objective data is available. Objectives of the present study were to retrospectively evaluate owner satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and prognostic factors associated with dogs receiving socket prostheses for partial limbs in a larger patient population. Materials and Methods: Client databases of a single prosthesis provider were reviewed to identify owners whose dogs had received a prosthetic device within the last 10 years. An online survey was developed to evaluate owner-reported outcomes. The survey inquired about anatomy of the residuum, concurrent disease, prosthesis use, rehabilitation, activity, complications, and owner satisfaction. Medical records and radiographs were requested from all participants. Radiographs were used to confirm level of amputation and evaluate for osseous complications. Survey responses were analyzed by assigning author-defined numeric scores defining clinical outcome and owner satisfaction. Results: One-hundred thirty-seven owners were contacted. The response rate was 50/137 (37%); 47 responses were analyzed. Forty-six of 47 owners reported positive satisfaction; 1/47 was displeased. Forty-two of 47 dogs were scored to have acceptable to full function; 5/47 had unacceptable clinical function using the author-defined scoring system. A 62% short-term complication rate and a 19% long-term complication rate were reported. Skin sores were the most common short and long-term complication. There was a significant correlation between both clinical outcome scores and owner satisfaction with days per week spent in the prosthesis. Additionally, clinical outcome scores and owner satisfaction significantly varied between dogs with different durations of prosthesis wear with a trend toward better outcomes associated with longer prosthesis wear. Radiographs were obtained for 23/47 dogs to further define level of defect. The most proximal level of defect was mid-radius for the forelimb and mid-tibia for the hind limb. There was no correlation between level of defect and either owner satisfaction or clinical outcome. Discussion/Conclusion: Results of this survey suggest a high degree of owner satisfaction despite substantial complication rates. Based on preliminary data, further evaluation of socket prostheses as a limb-sparing option for treatment of distal limb pathology should be considered. Prospective clinical trials with objective outcome measures are required to draw firm conclusions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize indications for and clinical outcomes of limb amputation in goats and sheep. DESIGN Retrospective case series and observational study. ANIMALS Goats (n = 15) and sheep (7) that underwent partial or complete limb amputation at the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital from January 1, 1985, through December 31, 2015. PROCEDURES Medical records of qualifying goats and sheep were reviewed and data extracted regarding signalment, use of animal, characteristics of the amputated limb, duration of hospitalization, outcome, and surgery-associated complications. The Fisher exact test was performed to compare postsurgical complication rates between various groups. RESULTS Reasons for limb amputation included trauma (ie, fracture, dog bite, and wire-fence injury) and infectious or degenerative disease (ie, osteomyelitis and osteoarthritis). Median (range) hospitalization period for goats and sheep was 7.5 days (1 to 63 days) and 8 days (3 to 20 days), respectively. Most (7/9) of the postsurgical complications were noticed > 2 months after amputation and included uncoordinated gait, tendon breakdown and laxity of the contralateral limb, chronic lameness, surgical site infection, chronic intermittent pain, and angular limb deformity. No association was identified between postsurgical complication rate in goats and body weight category (< 20 vs ≥ 20 kg [44 lb]), age category (< 2 vs ≥ 2 years), and amputated limb type (forelimb vs hind limb). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Clinical outcomes for goats and sheep following limb amputation varied and were seemingly case dependent. Amputation should be considered when preservation of the whole limb is not possible. Veterinarians should advise owners that limb amputation may result in various complications and recommend aftercare treatment such as physiotherapy.

Abstract
SummaryDespite the fact that limb amputation is a commonly performed procedure in veterinary medicine, quantitative data regarding outcomes are lacking. The intention of this study was to evaluate the effect of limb amputation on weight distribution to the remaining three limbs at a stance in dogs. Ten dogs with a prior forelimb amputation and ten dogs with a prior hindlimb amputation; all of which had no history of orthopaedic or neural disease in the remaining three limbs were included in the study. Standing weight bearing was evaluated with a commercial stance analyzer in all dogs. Five valid trials were obtained and a mean percentage of weight bearing was calculated for each remaining limb. The dogs with a previous forelimb amputation, and also those with a previous hindlimb amputation, had the largest mean increase in weight bearing in the contra -lateral forelimb. In conclusion, proactive monitoring of orthopaedic disease in the contralateral forelimb may be advisable in dogs with a previous limb amputation. Abstract
Summary
Objectives: To describe the use, quality of life, compliance, complications, and outcome of animals fitted with stump socket prostheses.
Methods: Medical records of dogs fitted with a stump socket prosthesis were reviewed. Functional outcome, quality of life and complications were retrospectively assessed from an owner questionnaire.
Results: Thirteen stump socket prostheses (12 dogs) were fitted for a variety of reasons including trauma, congenital abnormalities, and neoplasia. Eight dogs had a good outcome overall and four a poor outcome. Quality of life (QOL) remained good or excellent in 10/12 dogs. Nine complications were seen in 7/12 dogs, most were manageable; surgical wound complications (n = 2) and pressures sores (n = 4) were the most frequently encountered. One dog suffered multiple complications. Thoracic and pelvic limb stump socket prostheses had a similar complication rate, however all animals with a poor outcome had a thoracic limb stump socket prosthesis; two were small breed dogs (under 10 kg) and two had bilateral thoracic limb abnormalities.
Clinical significance: Stump socket prostheses are feasible and versatile in animals. In correctly selected cases, good to excellent outcomes are possible. However, complications are frequent but often manageable. Further investigations are required into the risk factors for poor outcomes and prospective studies are required to assess changes in biomechanics, function, and QOL before and after fitting of a stump socket prosthesis. Until further evidence is available, careful consideration should be given before fitting bilateral thoracic limb stump socket prostheses or thoracic limb stump socket prostheses to small breed dogs.Supplementary Material to this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.3415/VCOT-16-09-0127
