Reproductive performance of Gyr cows: the effect of weaning age of calves and postpartum energy intake

Nutrition of beef breeder cows in the dry tropics. 2. Effects of time of weaning and diet quality on breeder performance

In the seasonally dry tropics the effects of three times of weaning and three nutritional regimes on the changes in liveweight (LW) and body condition score (BCS) of grazing Bos indicus × Bos taurus breeder cows (n = 210) and their calves were examined through an annual cycle, commencing in the early dry season in April 1998. Most of the cows (n = 180) were lactating initially, and were weaned in April (W1), July (W2) or September (W3) to represent the expected early, mid and late dry season. In addition, cows that had not lactated for 11 months before the experiment commenced (NOCALF treatment; n = 30) were examined. The seasonal break occurred in late August, 3.5 months earlier than average for the site. The nutritional regimes consisted of a native pasture (LOW), another native pasture augmented with Stylosanthes spp. legumes (MEDIUM), or this latter pasture supplemented during the dry season with molasses-urea (HIGH). These nutritional regimes were imposed from the commencement of the experiment in April 1998 until February 1999, except that for the HIGH treatment the supplement was fed only during the dry season. Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy of faeces (F.NIRS) was used to estimate the contents of non-grass, crude protein (CP) and DM digestibility of the diet selected, and also DM intake and metabolisable energy (ME) intake. Diet quality was in accord with the expected seasonal cycle, and was consistently lower (P < 0.05) for the LOW than for the MEDIUM treatment. Concentrations of CP and CP/MJ ME in the diet, and of N in faeces, indicated that the cows grazing the LOW treatment were deficient in rumen degradable protein during the dry season. There was no interaction (P > 0.05) between the nutritional regime and the time of weaning on changes in conceptus-free liveweight (CF.LW) or BCS during the dry season. Weaning increased breeder CF.LW, relative to lactating breeders, by 0.42 kg/day in the early dry season (April–July; the difference between the W1 and W2 treatments), and 0.18 kg/day in the usual mid dry season (July–September; the difference between the W2 and W3 treatments). The NOCALF treatment cows were initially 79 kg heavier than lactating cows, and lost more LW during the dry season. Microbial CP synthesis was 21 and 29% greater (P < 0.05) in lactating than in non-lactating cows in the late dry season and shortly after the seasonal break (August and September), respectively. Calf growth was not affected (P > 0.05) by nutritional regime during the early dry season (April–July), but was lower for the LOW nutritional regime during the usual mid dry season (July–September); this indicated that the LOW nutritional regime cows mobilised sufficient additional body reserves to maintain milk production during the former, but not the latter, interval. All cows that were lactating at the commencement of the experiment gained CF.LW rapidly from September 1998 following the seasonal break. In conclusion, although nutrition affected LW change of both cows and calves, there was a much larger effect of weaning than of the nutrition treatments examined on conservation of body reserves in breeder cows during the dry season. The observation that the effects of weaning on conservation of cow body reserves were similar across a wide range of nutrition is important for management to achieve appropriate targets for breeder cow body reserves.

Body condition and suckling as factors influencing the duration of postpartum anestrus in cattle: a review

Prolonged postpartum anestrus is a main factor limiting reproductive efficiency in cattle, particularly in Bos indicus and Bos taurus/Bos indicus cows from tropical regions, because it prevents achievement of a 12 month calving interval. During anestrus, ovulation does not occur despite ovarian follicular development, because growing follicles do not mature. Although many factors affect postpartum anestrus, nutrition and suckling are the major factors influencing the resumption of postpartum ovarian cycles, as they affect hypothalamic, pituitary and ovarian activity and thus inhibit follicular development. Under-nutrition contributes to prolonged postpartum anestrus, particularly among cows dependent upon forages to meet their feed requirements and it apparently interacts with genetic, environmental or management factors to influence the duration of anestrus. The nutritional status or balance of an animal is evaluated through body condition score (BCS), as it reflects the body energy reserves available for metabolism, growth, lactation and activity. There is a converse relationship between energy balance and time to resumption of postpartum ovarian activity; inadequate nutrient intake results in loss of weight and BCS and finally cessation of estrous cycles. Suckling interferes with hypothalamic release of GnRH, provoking a marked suppression in pulsatile LH release, resulting in extended postpartum anestrus. The effects of suckling on regulation of tonic LH release are determined by the ability of the cow to identify a calf as her own or as unrelated. Vision and olfaction play critical roles in the development of the maternal-offspring bond, allowing the cow to identify her own calf, and abolition of both senses attenuates the negative effects of suckling on LH secretion. Thus, the maternal-offspring bond is essential for prolonged postpartum suckling-induced anovulation, and the suppressive influence of suckling is independent of neurosensory pathways within the teat or udder.

Effects of supplementary feeding and suckling intensity on postpartum reproductive performance of small East African Zebu cows

Small East African Zebu cows (n = 120) which calved during the dry season were used to determine the effects of postpartum nutritional supplementation and suckling intensity on body weight, body condition score, reproductive performance and on calf mortality and preweaning growth performance. Cows were allocated based on calving body weight to either receive a supplementary feed of molasses blocks containing 10% urea or to serve as controls and to be grazed only. Within nutritional groups, cows were further assigned either to continuous suckling or to restricted suckling twice daily. Intact bulls were introduced 21 days after the first cow had calved, and data were collected for 8 months. Calving body weight and body condition score of dams ranged from 186 to 192 kg and from 3.8 to 4.2 and did not differ among the treatment groups. Supplementary feeding significantly (P<0.05) reduced calf mortality from 40 to 20%, while restricted suckling reduced mortality by 13% from 36 to 23%. Body weight and body condition score did not vary between groups during the supplementation period. Over the 8-month period, 65% of supplemented and 53% of control cows exhibited estrus (P>0.05). A significantly (P<0.05) karger percentage of restricted suckled cows showed estrus than of continuously suckled cows (74 vs 42%). The postpartum estrus interval was shorter by 54 days in supplemented than in control cows and by 13 days in restricted than in continuously suckled cows. The pregnancy rate was higher in supplemented than in control cows (37 vs 33%; P>0.05) and in restricted than in continuously suckled (46 vs 22%; P>0.05) cows.

Beef cow reproduction as affected by postpartum nutrition and temporary calf removal

Data were collected on 306 multiparous cows over a 3-yr period (1984-1986) to evaluate the effect of postpartum nutrition and temporary calf removal on reproductive performance. All cows calved in a body condition score (BCS) of >/= 5 and were randomly allotted at parturition to an experiment with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The factors consisted of high or low-flush levels of postpartum nutritional management, with or without temporary calf removal for 48 h prior to the breeding season. The high diet contained 26.0 Mcal metabolizable energy. The low regimen of the low-flush diet contained 14.7 Mcal metabolizable energy, with the flushing regime consisting of a diet of 36 Mcal metabolizable energy. The flushing diet was offered 2 wk prior to breeding through the first 30 d of breeding. Interval to estrus was 45 and 44 d for high and low-flush, respectively (P>0.05), while interval to estrus with temporary calf removal and without temporary calf removal was 47 and 42 d, respectively (P<0.05). Means for the cumulative percent in estrus at 20, 40 and 60 d of breeding, respectively, were high, 93, 97 and 98; low-flush, 95, 96 and 98; with temporary calf removal, 92, 96 and 99; and without temporary calf removal, 96, 97 and 98 (P>0.05). Interval to pregnancy was 81 and 82 d for high and low-flush, respectively (P>0.05), while interval to pregnancy with temporary calf removal and without temporary calf removal was 82 and 81 d, respectively (P>0.05). Cumulative percentages of animals pregnant at 20, 40 and 60 d of breeding, respectively, were high, 59, 83 and 91; low-flush, 59, 80 and 90; with temporary calf removal, 58, 83 and 91; and without temporary calf removal, 60, 80 and 90 (P>0.05). Calf performance in response to dam nutrition and temporary calf removal was not affected at weaning or at intervals prior to weaning (P>0.05). Interactions between nutrition level and removal of calf factors were not significant (P>0.05) for any of the parameters measured. The data suggest cows calving in BCS >/= 5 have equivalent reproductive performance whether receiving high levels of energy postpartum or low levels of energy early postpartum, followed by a flushing diet fed immediately proceeding and continuing through the first 30 d of breeding. No beneficial effect of temporary calf removal was observed for cows calving with BCS >/= 5.
