Effect of signal duration on categorical loudness scaling in normal and in hearing-impaired listeners

Categorical loudness scaling and equal-loudness contours in listeners with normal hearing and hearing loss

This study describes procedures for constructing equal-loudness contours (ELCs) in units of phons from categorical loudness scaling (CLS) data and characterizes the impact of hearing loss on these estimates of loudness. Additionally, this study developed a metric, level-dependent loudness loss, which uses CLS data to specify the deviation from normal loudness perception at various loudness levels and as function of frequency for an individual listener with hearing loss. CLS measurements were made in 87 participants with hearing loss and 61 participants with normal hearing. An assessment of the reliability of CLS measurements was conducted on a subset of the data. CLS measurements were reliable. There was a systematic increase in the slope of the low-level segment of the CLS functions with increase in the degree of hearing loss. ELCs derived from CLS measurements were similar to standardized ELCs (International Organization for Standardization, ISO 226:2003). The presence of hearing loss decreased the vertical spacing of the ELCs, reflecting loudness recruitment and reduced cochlear compression. Representing CLS data in phons may lead to wider acceptance of CLS measurements. Like the audiogram that specifies hearing loss at threshold, level-dependent loudness loss describes deficit for suprathreshold sounds. Such information may have implications for the fitting of hearing aids.

Relation between loudness in categorical units and loudness in phons and sones

Data are presented on the relation between loudness measured in categorical units (CUs) using a standardized loudness scaling method (ISO 16832, 2006) and loudness expressed as the classical standardized measures phon and sone. Based on loudness scaling of narrowband noise signals by 31 normal-hearing subjects, sound pressure levels eliciting the same categorical loudness were derived for various center frequencies. The results were comparable to the standardized equal-loudness level contours. A comparison between the loudness function in CUs at 1000 Hz and the standardized loudness function in sones indicates a cubic relation between the two loudness measures.

Temporal integration of loudness measured using categorical loudness scaling and matching procedures

Temporal integration of loudness of 1 kHz tones with 5 and 200 ms durations was assessed in four subjects using two loudness measurement procedures: categorical loudness scaling (CLS) and loudness matching. CLS provides a reliable and efficient procedure for collecting data on the temporal integration of loudness and previously reported nonmonotonic behavior observed at mid-sound pressure level levels is replicated with this procedure. Stimuli that are assigned to the same category are effectively matched in loudness, allowing the measurement of temporal integration with CLS without curve-fitting, interpolation, or assumptions concerning the form of the loudness growth function.

The effect of stimulus duration on perception of Turkish vowels in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired children

The objective of the study was to examine the effects of stimulus duration on vowel perception in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired children. For this purpose, 80 semisynthetic vowel stimuli consisting of eight different Turkish vowels with ten different durations were presented to 14 normal-hearing and 15 hearing impaired children, and they were asked to identify the vowel they heard. Thirteen normal-hearing adults served as speaker subjects to get normative data on mean durations of the Turkish vowels. While there was no significant effect of duration on perception in normal-hearing children, perception errors for very short and very long vowels were observed in hearing-impaired children. The most frequent responses as a function of duration showed four different patterns: (1) three vowels were perceived correctly in all durations; (2) two were perceived correctly in middle and longer durations; (3) two were perceived correctly in middle duration; and (4) only one was perceived correctly in short duration. It was concluded that the effects of stimulus duration on vowel perception were determined by natural duration of the vowel in a given language, and unnaturally short and long vowels were misperceived by hearing impaired subjects.

Duration, compression, and the aided loudness discomfort level

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this investigation is to determine how the unaided and aided loudness discomfort level (LDL) varies with the duration of the input signal and whether the electroacoustic characteristics of compression circuits affect this relationship in a manner that may alter the listener's dynamic range for short duration sounds.

DESIGN

Ten hearing-impaired and 20 normal-hearing listeners participated. LDLs were determined for noise bursts of durations ranging in six steps from 32 to 1024 msec, using a two-alternative, forced-choice adaptive tracking procedure in which input level varied until LDL was achieved. LDLs were also obtained for continuous discourse, using a clinical procedure. Subjects were also given the opportunity to self adjust maximum output SPL to their LDL using either output limiting or volume controls in response to fixed 90 dB SPL noise bursts. Testing was conducted unaided and with hearing aids representing two analog (output compression limiting, wide dynamic range compression) and four digital compression circuits. Primary circuit contrasts included compression threshold, compression ratio, attack time and the presence or absence of unity gain at high levels.

RESULTS

For the unaided condition, both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects showed increasing LDLs with decreasing signal duration. Under aided conditions, circuits with compression thresholds of 45 to 50 dB SPL and compression ratios of 2:1 produced LDL functions that were similar in slope to the impaired listener's unaided functions. Slopes were steeper when the attack time was slow (128 msec) than when it was fast (2 msec). Circuits with compression ratios of 8:1 produced flat LDL duration functions (i.e., a loss of duration-dependent effects). Similar duration-dependent LDL effects were also observed when subjects adjusted their own hearing aid output characteristics in response to 90 dB noise bursts.

CONCLUSION

For the unaided condition, results suggest that normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners can tolerate short duration sounds at higher levels than long duration sounds, a finding that has implications for hearing aid design. Circuits that preserve the relationship between duration and LDL should allow brief phonemes to be presented at higher levels without discomfort than circuits that do not, possibly resulting in greater audibility or speech recognition. Current results suggest that circuits with low compression thresholds, low compression ratios, and slow attack times might accomplish this objective better than circuits with high compression thresholds, high compression ratios and fast attack times.
