Exploring illness identity among children and youth living with cancer: A narrative review

BACKGROUND

Children and youth with cancer may find it challenging to integrate illness into their pre-existing identity-a phenomenon known as illness identity. In this critical narrative review, we explored illness identity among children and youth with cancer.

METHODS

Three academic databases were searched. Twenty-two articles were included in this review and each underwent thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Cancer has both positive and negative influences on the identities of children and youth. Illness identity is expressed creatively through various communicative outlets. Further, external processes such as social support may influence cancer identity. A few studies cited cancer as a hindrance to adult identity development.

CONCLUSIONS

Cancer has a profound impact on identity formation among children and youth. Many normative assumptions about time, identity, and child and youth development underlie the existing literature. Future researchers may adopt a critical lens to be inclusive of diverse identity experiences among children and youth with cancer.

How physicians and nurses handle fear in children with cancer

Previous research on fear in children with cancer has often focused on interventions to alleviate fear related to medical procedures and less on how to meet the challenges related to existential fear. This study aimed to describe how experienced nurses and physicians handle fear in children with cancer. Ten nurses and physicians with more than 10 years of experience in child oncology from a university hospital in Sweden were interviewed, and a qualitative content analysis was performed on the data. Nurses' and physicians' handling of fear encompasses commitment and closeness and yet also a distancing from fear and its expressions.

Death of a child at home or in hospital: experiences of Greek mothers

The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of Greek mothers who cared for a child dying of cancer at home or in the hospital, and to highlight some of their major needs during the terminal period. Fifteen mothers were interviewed and both quantitative and qualitative procedures were used to analyze the findings. Ten families (67%) chose to care for the child at home without having access to home care services, while the remaining five sought hospital care. Their decision was primarily based upon the child's expressed wish and parental preference. The family network played a significant role in supporting the mother-child unit, especially when death occurred at home. Mothers assessed positively the services provided by nurses and social workers, and had expectations that physicians would support them on a psychological level during the terminal period. The care of the dying child is influenced by cultural factors predominant in Greek society and some of the findings are discussed in this light.

Loss & change: new directions in death education for adolescents

The subject of this paper is Loss & change, a preventive health education school based program. The program has been developed, in conjunction with teachers, by a team of health workers from an Australian community health agency. This program is generalist in nature. It explores the losses adolescents experience within the context of healthy adolescent development. Based on a primary prevention model, it has a strong focus on life, and, as such, is a death education program which is different from those which focus on suicide prevention or bereavement support. The paper serves as an interim report on a program which is still developing, and which may provide some insight into a promising means of support for adolescent development.
