Abstract
Uncaria gambir Roxb. is a plant from Southeast Asia and is widely used as an alternative medicine with various applications. This plant has been widely used in traditional medicine. This paper aims to provide information on U. gambir, a summary of data on phytochemicals and on medical and nonmedical activities. Phytochemical studies reveal biologically active constituents such as flavonoids, phenolics, and alkaloids. Various studies have shown that extracts and compounds obtained from U. gambir have medical uses for their antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-helminthic, anticancer, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hyperuricemic, anti-lipid peroxidation, antihyperlipidemic and other properties. In addition, this extract has other uses, such as adsorbent for dyes and metal ions, as well as corrosion inhibition. Thus, U. gambir, which is commonly used in traditional medicine, is a potential plant for many therapeutic applications and prospects for drug development as well as other applications such as adsorbent and corrosion inhibition.

Abstract
Albizia myriophylla has been used in Thai folk medicine for treating inflammation-related diseases. The wood of this medicinal plant is traditionally used as a single herbal drug in the form of an aqueous decoction and as a component in several Thai herbal formulations for the remedy of fever, sore throat, and aphthous ulcers. This study aimed to evaluate in vivo the anti-inflammatory potential and possible mechanism of action of the standardized wood extract of A. myriophylla as well as to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity and physicochemical properties of the developed herbal gel formulation containing standardized wood extract of A. myriophylla. Results of quantitative HPLC analysis demonstrated that the standardized wood extract of A. myriophylla contained 22.95 mg/g of 8-methoxy-7,3',4'-trihydroxyflavone, a bioactive marker compound of A. myriophylla. The standardized wood extract of A. myriophylla (1% w/v) exhibited remarkable inhibition (54.4 - 80.3%) in the croton oil model of topical inflammation at all assessment times, comparable to standard indomethacin (55.3 - 63.6%). Real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed to clarify the anti-inflammatory mechanism of standardized wood extract of A. myriophylla, and the result showed that this standardized extract decreased lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide synthase mRNA levels in a dose-dependent manner. The developed herbal gel containing standardized wood extract of A. myriophylla (1% w/w) had good physicochemical characteristics and exhibited potent inhibition (51.4 - 77.8%) of inflammation in a rat ear edema model at all assessment times, comparable to indomethacin gel (33.3 - 40.5%). The notable anti-inflammatory activity of standardized wood extract of A. myriophylla and its developed herbal gel formulation indicates their potential application as natural anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract
Simple Summary Different components of the coconut are being looked into and used as a potential substitute to create or substitute animal feed components. Different coconut products and by-products—such as coconut water, milk, copra, testa, flour, raw kernels, oil, and desiccated coconut—are used with livestock, especially ruminants and aquaculture industries. However, the use of coconut in animal feed may be limited by several things that make it less nutritious. There is a possibility to research new technologies, such as pre-treating coconut to reduce the effects of anti-nutritional substances before they can be used to feed the animals. This review article describes a few important discoveries, which gives a somewhat hopeful view of the future. Different parts of the coconut can and should be used more in animal feed. Coconut in animal feed makes it much cheaper to feed animals and helps them in the digestion process, growth, and health. However, innovative methods of processing, extracting, and treating coconut need to be encouraged to improve nutritional quality and make coconut products function efficiently in feed. Abstract The price of traditional sources of nutrients used in animal feed rations is increasing steeply in developed countries due to their scarcity, high demand from humans for the same food items, and expensive costs of raw materials. Thus, one of the alternative sources is coconut parts or coconut as a whole fruit. Coconut is known as the ‘tree of abundance’, ‘tree of heaven’, and ‘tree of life’ owing to its numerous uses, becoming a very important tree in tropical areas for its provision of food, employment, and business opportunities to millions of people. Coconut contains a rich profile of macro and micronutrients that vary depending on the parts and how they are used. It is frequently chosen as an alternative source of protein and fiber. Its uses as an antibacterial agent, immunomodulant, and antioxidant further increase its importance. Using coconut oil in ruminant feed helps to minimize methane gas emissions by 18–30%, and to reduce dry matter intake up to 4.2 kg/d. The aquaculture sectors also use coconut palm as an alternative source because it significantly improves the digestion, growth, lipid metabolism, health, and antioxidative responses. However, coconut is not widely used in poultry diets although it has adequate amount of protein and carbohydrate due to anti-nutritional factors such cellulose (13%), galactomannan (61%), and mannan (26%). This review considered the importance and potential of coconut usage as an alternative ingredient in feed and supplements in various livestock sectors as it has plentiful nutrients and functional qualities, simultaneously leading to reduced feed cost and enhanced production.

Abstract
A herbal mouthwash containing essential oils of holy basil and mountain tea, extracts of St John's wort and European goldenrod (Bucovia™) and cetylpyridinium chloride, was developed and in vitro tested for its efficiency against biofilm formation by Streptococcus mutans, together with its eradicating activity against already preformed (48 h with saccharose) streptococcal biofilm. The minimum inhibitory (MIC) and bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of the final formulation, as well as of its individual components, were initially determined. The results revealed that the mouthwash needed to be applied at two-times its MIC (0.63% v.v-1) to completely inhibit biofilm formation by S. mutans, which was otherwise capable of developing a robust biofilm on the tested surface. Once fully developed, the matrix of the biofilm was found to contain a significant amount of exopolysaccharides protecting the cells, being impossible to eradicate even when exposed to pure mouthwash for 15 min, highlighting the great recalcitrance of biofilm-embedded S. mutans.

Abstract
The crisis of antibiotic resistance necessitates creative and innovative approaches, from chemical identification and analysis to the assessment of bioactivity. Plant natural products (NPs) represent a promising source of antibacterial lead compounds that could help fill the drug discovery pipeline in response to the growing antibiotic resistance crisis. The major strength of plant NPs lies in their rich and unique chemodiversity, their worldwide distribution and ease of access, their various antibacterial modes of action, and the proven clinical effectiveness of plant extracts from which they are isolated. While many studies have tried to summarize NPs with antibacterial activities, a comprehensive review with rigorous selection criteria has never been performed. In this work, the literature from 2012 to 2019 was systematically reviewed to highlight plant-derived compounds with antibacterial activity by focusing on their growth inhibitory activity. A total of 459 compounds are included in this Review, of which 50.8% are phenolic derivatives, 26.6% are terpenoids, 5.7% are alkaloids, and 17% are classified as other metabolites. A selection of 183 compounds is further discussed regarding their antibacterial activity, biosynthesis, structure-activity relationship, mechanism of action, and potential as antibiotics. Emerging trends in the field of antibacterial drug discovery from plants are also discussed. This Review brings to the forefront key findings on the antibacterial potential of plant NPs for consideration in future antibiotic discovery and development efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries is one of the most important oral health problems and a common infectious microbial disease. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) has been regarded as the primary etiologic factor in the formation of dental caries. Curcumin (CUR) has an antibacterial action and could be used in the eradication of S. mutans to control dental caries. This systematic review was undertaken with the aim of evaluating the anticaries effect of CUR. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted in the PubMed/Medline, Cochrane - CENTRAL, and Scopus databases. Based on the PICO model, studies which evaluated the anticaries effects of CUR up until 24 February 2020 with language restrictions were selected for this systematic review. RESULTS From 753 papers found, 13 met the eligibility criteria and were included. In 12 out of 13 included studies, CUR had significant antibacterial and anticaries effects. CUR had inhibitory effects on S. mutans growth, acid production, ATPase and sortase A activity, biomass, viability and metabolism reduction of biofilm, reduced exopolysaccharide production of biofilms, changes in biofilm structure, and had anti-adhesion effects against S. mutans. CONCLUSION This systematic review suggests promising antibacterial and anticaries effects of CUR including inhibition of S. mutans growth, acid production, ATPase and sortase A activity. This review provides unique information regarding the potential role of CUR in the prevention and treatment of dental carries as a natural, accessible, safe, and inexpensive agent to increase oral and dental health. However, clinical randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE A Thai herbal formulation 'Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi' containing Nigella sativa (seed), Piper retrofractum (fruit), Punica granatum (pericarp), and Quercus infectoria (nutgall) has long been traditionally used to treat diarrhea or bloody mucous diarrhea. Scientific information is very important to support its therapeutic effects and traditional drug development. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activities of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi against diarrhea-causing bacteria and determine its effects on bacterial virulence factors and in vivo acute toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ethanol and water extracts of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi and its plant components were prepared. The agar diffusion method was used for preliminary screening of antibacterial activity of the extracts against diarrhea-causing bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) were assessed using broth microdilution method. The effects on bactericidal activity, bacterial cell wall, and cell membrane were examined by time-kill, lysis, and leakage assays, respectively. The effects on bacterial virulence factors including quorum-sensing system, biofilm production, and swarming motility were determined. Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify the group of chemical compounds present in the formulation extracts. Acute toxicity study was conducted by a single oral dose of 2000 mg/kg body weight in Wistar albino rats. RESULTS Ethanol and water extracts of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi and Quercus infectoria demonstrated antibacterial efficacy against all bacterial strains as revealed by zones of inhibition ranging from 7.0 to 24.5 mm. The ethanol and water extracts of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi and Quercus infectoria produced strong bacteriostatic activity against V. parahaemolyticus (n = 11) with an MIC range of 7.81-250 μg/ml. Only the ethanol extract of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi produced MBC values less than or equal to 1000 μg/ml against all V. parahaemolyticus. Based on time-kill study, no surviving V. parahaemolyticus (ATCC 17802 and 5268) cells were detected within 6-12 h after treatment with the ethanol extract of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi at MBC-4MBC concentrations. Vibrioparahaemolyticus ATCC 17802 cells treated with the ethanol extract of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi demonstrated no lysis or leakage through the bacterial membrane was not observed. At low concentrations (0.125-0.25 μg/ml) the ethanol extract of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi inhibited violacein production by Chromobacterium violaceum DMST 21761 without affecting the bacterial growth. The ethanol (31.25-62.5 μg/ml) and water (31.25-250 μg/ml) extracts of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi inhibited biofilm production by S. aureus. The ethanol and water extracts of Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi at 1000 μg/ml reduced the swarming motility of Escherichia coli O157: H7 by 74.98% and 52.65%, respectively. Tannins and terpenoids were detected in both the ethanol and water extracts. Flavonoids were present only in the ethanol extract. Alkaloids and antraquinones were not noticed in either extract. In the acute toxicity study, there were no significant changes in hematological and biochemical parameters nor were adverse effects on mortality, general behaviors, body weight, or organ weights detected. CONCLUSIONS The scientific evidence from this study supported the therapeutic effects and safety of the traditional Thai herbal formulation 'Ya-Pit-Samut-Noi' which has been used as an alternative treatment for gastrointestinal infections in Thailand.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The genus Albizia (Leguminosae) comprises about 150 species and some species have been used for the treatment of rheumatism, stomachache, cough, diarrhea, and wounds in traditional and local medicine. The aim of the review: This review article documents and critically assesses the current status of the traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of the Albizia species. MATERIALS AND METHODS All provided literatures on the Albizia species were searched using the electronic databases (e.g. Web of Science, Elsevier, Springer, PubMed, ACS, CNKI, Google Scholar, and Baidu Scholar), books, and theses with keywords of 'Albizia' and 'Albizzia'. RESULTS Albizia species have been used for melancholia, insomnia, wounds, fever, abscesses, diabetes, headache, stomachache, diarrhea, cough, rheumatism, snake bite, malaria, and parasitic infection in traditional and local medicine. These plants mainly contain triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, lignanoids, alkaloids, phenolic glycosides, etc. Albizia species have been demonstrated to possess various pharmacological activities. Among them, the antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antifertility, antianxiety, antidepressant, and anti-fever properties are consistent with the traditional and local applications of the Albizia species. CONCLUSIONS The traditional and local uses of Albizia species have been partially demonstrated by the pharmacological investigation. However, some traditional applications have not been assessed scientifically due to incomplete methodologies and ambiguous findings. Moreover, no clinical evidences support the health benefits of these plants. The systematic and comprehensive preclinical studies and clinical trials are still required to verify the pharmacological activities, clinical efficacy, and safety of Albizia species.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the anti-Streptococcus mutans mechanisms of action of lupinifolin from Albizia myriophylla Benth. (Fabaceae) wood and provide scientific evidence to support the traditional use of the plant against dental caries. METHODS The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was evaluated using the broth micro-dilution method. The effects of lupinifolin on bactericidal activity, bacterial cell walls, and membranes were investigated by time-kill, lysis, and leakage assays, respectively. Electron microscopy was utilized to observe any cell morphological changes caused by the compound. Localization of lupinifolin in S. mutans was detected using the thin layer chromatography technique. RESULTS The MIC range of lupinifolin against S. mutans (n=6) was 2-4 μg/ml. This compound displayed bactericidal effects on S. mutans ATCC 25175 by 90-99.9% killing at 4MIC-16MIC after 8-24 hours. Lupinifolin-treated cells demonstrated no lysis. However, significant cytoplasmic leakage through the bacterial membrane was observed after treatment with lupinifolin at 4MIC-16MIC. As revealed by ultrastructural analysis, lupinifolin produced some changes in bacterial cell walls and membranes. Moreover, the compound was observed in the cytoplasmic fraction of the lupinifolin-treated cells. These results suggest that lupinifolin can enter the cell of bacteria but does not accumulate in the cell envelope and subsequently disrupts the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane, leading to cell death. CONCLUSION The scientific evidence from this study offers valuable insights into the potential role of lupinifolin in pharmaceutical and antibiotic applications and supports the therapeutic effects of A. myriophylla, which has traditionally been used as an alternative treatment for dental caries.

Abstract
CONTEXT Albizia myriophylla Benth (Leguminosae) is a medicinal plant widely used in Thailand and other Asian countries as a folk medicine remedy for many ailments. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to investigate the chemical compositions, antibacterial activity, and cytotoxicity of A. myriophylla wood. MATERIALS AND METHODS The structure identification of the isolated compounds was established using spectroscopic methods. In vitro antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus and the cytotoxicity against KB cells of extracts and compounds from A. myriophylla were performed using broth microdilution and resazurin microplate assays, respectively. The lupinifolin content in A. myriophylla extracts was quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS A rare flavan-3,4-diol (1) together with eight known compounds (2-9) were isolated from the wood of A. myriophylla. Compounds 4-9 exhibited anti-S. mutans activity, of which lupinifolin (5) was the most potent with an MIC value of 0.98 µg/mL, followed by its dihydroxy derivative 4 with an MIC value of 62.5 µg/mL. Compounds 4 and 5 also displayed marked antibacterial activity against B. cereus and S. aureus (MIC value 15.63-125 µg/mL) and showed strong cytotoxic activity against KB cells (IC50 value 4.95-12.55 µg/mL). The lupinifolin contents in ethanol extracts from two different collections of this plant originating from central and southern Thailand were 93.85 and 0.04 mg/g, respectively. CONCLUSION This is the first report of compounds 1-4 from A. myriophylla. Compounds 4 and 5 showed potent antibacterial and cytotoxic activities compared with other isolates. The anti-S. mutans activity of A. myriophylla extracts seems to be related to the lupinifolin content.

Abstract
Dental caries is considered as the most common polymicrobial oral disease in the world. With the aim of developing alternative approaches to reduce or prevent the decay, numerous papers showed the potential anticaries activity of a number of natural products. The natural products with anticaries effects are selected from e.g. food, beverages, flowers or traditional herbs. Most of the effective components are proven to be polyphenol compounds. Many of the natural products are studied as antibacterial agents, while some of them are found to be effective in shifting the de-/remineralization balance. However, the mechanisms of the anticaries effects are still unclear for most of the natural products. In the future, more efforts need to be made to seek novel effective natural products via in vitro experiment, animal study and in situ investigations, as well as to enhance their anticaries effects with the help of novel technology like nanotechnology.
