Abstract
While there is generally no consensus about how nutrients determine milk synthesis in the mammary gland, it is likely that the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) plays a role as a key integrator of nutritional and mitogenic signals that can influence a multitude of catabolic and anabolic pathways. The objectives of this study were to evaluate acute changes (<24 h) in translational signaling, in addition to chronic changes (14 d) in mammary gland structure and composition, in response to a severe feed restriction. Fourteen lactating Holstein dairy cows were assigned to either ad libitum feeding (n = 7), or a restricted feeding program (n = 7). Feed-restricted cows had feed removed after the evening milking on d 0. Mammary biopsies and blood samples were collected 16 h after feed removal, after which cows in the restricted group were fed 60% of their previously observed ad lib intake for the remainder of the study. On d 14, animals were sacrificed and mammary glands dissected. In response to feed removal, an acute increase in plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentration was observed, concurrent to a decrease in milk yield. In mammary tissue, we observed downregulation of the mTORC1-S6K1 signaling cascade, in addition to reductions in mRNA expression of markers of protein synthesis, endoplasmic reticulum biogenesis, and cell turnover (i.e., transcripts associated with apoptosis or cell proliferation). During the 14 d of restricted feeding, animals underwent homeorhetic adaptation to 40% lower nutrient intake, achieving a new setpoint of 14% reduced milk yield with 18% and 29% smaller mammary secretory tissue dry matter and crude protein masses, respectively. On d 14, no treatment differences were observed in markers of protein synthesis or mammary cell turnover evaluated using gene transcripts and immunohistochemical staining. These findings implicate mTORC1-S6K1 in the early phase of the adaptation of the mammary gland's capacity for milk synthesis in response to changes in nutrient supply. Additionally, changes in rates of mammary cell turnover may be transient in nature, returning to basal levels following brief alterations that have sustained effects.

Abstract
Lactating cows can react to changes in nutrient availability with a range of behavioural and physiological mechanisms, which may differ among lactation stages. We investigated the effects of short feed restriction and refeeding periods on beef cows' performance and metabolic status in different months of lactation. For this, Parda de Montaña beef cows [n = 31; 626 ± 47.7 kg body weight (BW)] were subjected to short nutritional restriction and refeeding cycles, which were repeated in months 2, 3 and 4 of lactation. Each month, cows were consecutively fed a diet to meet 100% of their energy and protein requirements during a 4-day basal period, 55% during a 4-day restriction period, and again 100% during a 4-day refeeding period. The performance (energy balance, BW, milk yield and composition) and plasma metabolite concentrations (glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), urea and malondialdehyde) were measured daily. Most of the traits were significantly affected by the interaction between feeding period and lactation month. Feed restriction induced milk yield loss, decreased milk protein and increased milk urea contents to different extents. The plasma NEFA concentrations rose with restriction in months 2, 3 and 4 but BHB and urea concentrations increased only in month 4. Most of these metabolites lowered to basal values during refeeding. These results suggest that beef cows use different adaptation strategies to cope with nutritional challenges as lactation advances, body fat mobilisation predominates in early lactation and protein catabolism prevails at later stages.

Abstract
Milk production in dairy cows is affected by numerous factors, including diet. Feed restriction is known to have little impact on milk total protein content but its effect on the fine protein composition is still poorly documented. The objective of this study was to describe the effects of two feed restriction trials of different intensities on the milk protein composition of Holstein cows. One restriction trial was of high intensity (H: 8 mid-lactation Holstein cows) and the second of moderate intensity (M: 19 peak lactation Holstein cows). Feed restriction decreased the milk protein yield for caseins under the M trial and of all six major milk proteins under the H trial. These decreased yields lead to lower concentrations of αs1-, αs2- and β-caseins during the H trial. The milk proteome, analyzed on 32 milk samples, was affected as a function of restriction intensity. Among the 345 proteins identified eight varied under the M trial and 160 under the H trial. Ontology analyses revealed their implication in carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolisms as well as in the immune system. These proteins reflected adaptations of the animal and mammary gland physiology to feed restriction and constituted a signature of this change.

Abstract
Optimising feed is a key challenge for dairy livestock systems, as forage stock shortages are increasingly frequent and feed is the biggest operating cost. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of reducing forage quantity and access time on dairy performance and animal nutritional status during indoor feeding. Twenty-seven Montbéliarde and Holstein cows were randomly allocated to three groups of nine cows balanced by breed, parity, days in milk, and milk yield. The three groups were given 3.9 kg DM/day of second-cut hay and 4.5 kg/day of concentrate and either i) ad libitum access to first-cut hay (Ad Libitum group; AL), ii) 10.5 kg/day of first-cut hay (Quantity-restricted group; QR), or iii) 10.5 kg/day of first-cut hay but with access time restricted to only 2 h in the morning and 2 h in the afternoon (Quantity-and-Time-restricted group; QTR). Milk yield, composition and coagulation properties, cow nutritional status (weight, body condition score, blood metabolites) and cow activities were recorded. The AL group ingested 10 % more feed than the QR group and 16 % more feed than the QTR group. Organic matter digestibility was lower in the AL group than in the QR and QTR groups whereas feed efficiency did not differ. Milk yield was not significantly different among the three groups. Compared to the QR and QTR groups, the AL group had significantly higher milk fat (35.9 vs 32.9 and 32.8 g/kg of milk) and milk protein content (29.5 vs 27.7 and 28.5 g/kg of milk). QR and QTR cows mobilised their body fat, resulting in a lower final body condition score, and tended to have a lower blood non-esterified fatty acid concentration than the AL group. QTR cows showed greater body fat mobilisation, but their final corrected BW was not different from AL cows. Access-time restriction did not impact fat and protein content but led to decreased casein, lactose contents and casein-to-whey protein ratio. The forage savings achieved through this feed management practice could prove economically substantial when forage prices increase. This practice can be of interest in grassland systems to overcome certain climatic hazards without having to resort to purchases or to increase the farm's forage autonomy.

Abstract
Animal robustness is a complex trait of importance for livestock production systems and genetic selection. Phenotyping is essential for evaluation of the adaptation of different genotypes to changing environments. This study tested an experimental framework to induce marked deviations in the adaptive responses of suckling beef cows and to identify relevant indicators of responses to characterise individual differences in the robustness of cows. The production and metabolic responses of primiparous suckling Charolais cows to two periods of feed restriction (FR, 50% of their net energy requirements) of different durations were monitored. After calving, 13 cows (aged 39 ± 2 months, BW of 680 ± 42 kg at calving) had ad libitum access to a diet composed of hay and supplemented with concentrate to meet their energy and protein requirements. Starting at 54 ± 6 days postcalving, the cows underwent two periods of FR: 4 days of FR (FR4), which was followed by 17 days of ad libitum intake to study the recovery from FR4, and 10 days of FR (FR10), which was followed by 18 days of ad libitum intake to study the recovery from FR10. The milk yield (MY), BW, body condition score and plasma non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate, glucose and urea concentrations were measured before, during and after each FR. Among all measured variables, the MY and NEFA concentrations showed the most significant changes in response to FR. A functional data analysis approach was applied to the MY and NEFA data to model the adaptive responses and extract quantifiable indicators of deviation and recovery. Linear correlations (P < 0.03-0.07) between FR4 and FR10 were found for some indicators describing MY and NEFA levels before and after FR. The overall repeatability of MY and NEFA responses between both FR accounted for 46% based on quartile analysis performed on average responses. Moreover, the variance in both the MY and NEFA variables did not differ significantly between FR4 and FR10, despite a trend for higher variances in FR10. Altogether, (1) the calculated variables derived from the functional data analysis of the time patterns of the MY and NEFA accounted for the differences in the cow responses to FR, and (2) the animal responses appeared to show concordance between FR4 and FR10. In conclusion, short-term FR is a relevant framework for studying productive and metabolic adaptive responses in suckling cows and allows the identification of potential robustness indicators.

Abstract
In the dairy cow, negative energy balance affects milk yield and composition as well as animal health. Studying the effects of negative energy balance on dairy cow milk production is thus essential. Feed restriction (FR) experiments attempting to reproduce negative energy balance by reducing the quantity or quality of the diet were conducted in order to better describe the animal physiology changes. The study of FR is also of interest since with climate change issues, cows may be increasingly faced with periods of drought leading to a shortage of forages. The aim of this article is to review the effects of FR during lactation in dairy cows to obtain a better understanding of metabolism changes and how it affects mammary gland activity and milk production and composition. A total of 41 papers studying FR in lactating cows were used to investigate physiological changes induced by these protocols. FR protocols affect the entire animal metabolism as indicated by changes in blood metabolites such as a decrease in glucose concentration and an increase in non-esterified fatty acid or β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations; hormonal regulations such as a decrease in insulin and insulin-like growth factor I or an increase in growth hormone concentrations. These variations indicated a mobilization of body reserve in most studies. FR also affects mammary gland activity through changes in gene expression and could affect mammary cell turnover through cell apoptosis, cell proliferation, and exfoliation of mammary epithelial cells into milk. Because of modifications of the mammary gland and general metabolism, FR decreases milk production and can affect milk composition with decreased lactose and protein concentrations and increased fat concentration. These effects, however, can vary widely depending on the type of restriction, its duration and intensity, or the stage of lactation in which it takes place. Finally, to avoid yield loss and metabolic disorders, it is important to identify reliable biomarkers to monitor energy balance.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of feed restriction on mammary miRNAs and coding gene expression in midlactation cows. Five Holstein cows and 6 Montbéliarde cows underwent 6 days of feed restriction, during which feed allowance was reduced to meet 50% of their net energy for lactation requirements. Mammary biopsies were performed before and at the end of the restriction period. Mammary miRNA and mRNA analyses were performed using high-throughput sequencing and microarray analyses, respectively. Feed restriction induced a negative energy balance and decreased milk production and fat and protein yields in both breeds. Feed restriction modified the expression of 27 miRNAs and 374 mRNAs in mammary glands from Holstein cows, whereas no significant miRNA change was observed in Montbéliarde cows. Among the 27 differentially expressed miRNAs, 8 miRNAs were associated with dairy QTL. Analysis of target genes indicate that the 8 most abundantly expressed miRNAs control transcripts related to lipid metabolism, mammary remodeling and stress response. A comparison between the mRNAs targeted by the 8 most strongly expressed miRNAs and 374 differentially expressed mRNAs identified 59 mRNAs in common. The bioinformatic analyses of these 59 mRNAs revealed their implication in lipid metabolism and endothelial cell proliferation. These effects of feed restriction on mammary miRNAs and mRNAs observed in Holstein cows suggest a potential role of miRNAs in mammary structure and lipid biosynthesis that could explain changes in milk production and composition.

Abstract
In mammals, milk is essential for the growth, development, and health. Milk quantity and quality are dependent on mammary development, strongly influenced by nutrition. This review provides an overview of the data on nutritional regulations of mammary development and gene expression involved in milk component synthesis. Mammary development is described related to rodents, rabbits, and pigs, common models in mammary biology. Molecular mechanisms of the nutritional regulation of milk synthesis are reported in ruminants regarding the importance of ruminant milk in human health. The effects of dietary quantitative and qualitative alterations are described considering the dietary composition and in regard to the periods of nutritional susceptibly. During lactation, the effects of lipid supplementation and feed restriction or deprivation are discussed regarding gene expression involved in milk biosynthesis, in ruminants. Moreover, nutrigenomic studies underline the role of the mammary structure and the potential influence of microRNAs. Knowledge from three lactating and three dairy livestock species contribute to understanding the variety of phenotypes reported in this review and highlight (1) the importance of critical physiological stages, such as puberty gestation and early lactation and (2) the relative importance of the various nutrients besides the total energetic value and their interaction.

Abstract
Background Characterising the regulation of milk component synthesis in response to macronutrient supply is critical for understanding the implications of nutritional interventions on milk production. Gene expression in mammary gland secretory cells was measured using RNA isolated from milk fat globules from 6 Holstein-Friesian cows receiving 5-d abomasal infusions of saline, essential amino acids (AA), or glucose (GG) or palm olein (LG) without (LAA) or with (HAA) essential AA, according to a 6 × 6 Latin square design. RNA was isolated from milk fat samples collected on d 5 of infusion and subjected to real-time quantitative PCR. We hypothesised that mRNA expression of genes involved in de novo milk fatty acid (FA) synthesis would be differently affected by GG and LG, and that expression of genes regulating transfer of tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates would increase at the HAA level. We also hypothesised that the HAA level would affect genes regulating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis but would not affect genes related to the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) or the integrated stress response (ISR) network. Results Infusion of GG did not affect de novo milk FA yield but decreased expression of FA synthase (FASN). Infusion of LG decreased de novo FA yield and tended to decrease expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1). The HAA level increased both de novo FA yield and expression of ACC1, and tended to decrease expression of mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK2). mRNA expression of mTORC1 signaling participants was not affected by GG, LG, or AA level. Expression of the ε subunit of the ISR constituent eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2B (EIF2B5) tended to increase at the HAA level, but only in the presence of LG. X-box binding protein 1 (XBP1) mRNA was activated in response to LG and the HAA level. Conclusions Results show that expression of genes involved in de novo FA synthesis responded to glucogenic, lipogenic, and aminogenic substrates, whereas genes regulating intermediate flux through the tricarboxylic acid cycle were not majorly affected. Results also suggest that after 5 d of AA supplementation, milk protein synthesis is supported by enhanced ER biogenesis instead of signaling through the mTORC1 or ISR networks.

Abstract
A possible driver of feed inefficiency in dairy cows is overconsumption. The objective was therefore to test precision feed restriction as a lever to improve feed efficiency of the least efficient lactating dairy cows. An initial cohort of 68 Holstein lactating cows was monitored from calving to end of ad libitum feeding at 196 ± 16 d in milk, with the last 70 d being used to estimate feed efficiency. For a given expected dry matter (DM) intake (DMI) during ad libitum feeding, offered DMI during restriction was set to observed DMI of the 10% most efficient cows during ad libitum feeding for similar performance. Feed restriction lasted during 92 d, with only the last 70 d being used for data analyses. A single diet was fed during ad libitum and restriction periods, and was based on 64.9% of corn silage and 35.1% of concentrates on a DM basis. Individual DMI, body weight, milk production, milk composition, and body condition score were recorded, as well as methane emissions. Feed efficiency was defined as the repeatable part of the random effect of cow on the intercept in a mixed model predicting DMI with net energy in milk, maintenance and body weight gain and loss within parity, feeding level, and time. Milk energy efficiency was estimated in the same way, predicting net energy in milk instead of DMI. The 15 least efficient cows ate 2.6 kg of DM/d more than the 15 most efficient cows during ad libitum feeding with 2 g/kg of DMI lower methane yield, but similar daily methane emissions. Feed restriction decreased DMI by 2.6 kg of DMI/d for the least efficient cows, which was 1.8 kg of DMI/d more than the most efficient cows, and decreased daily methane emissions by 49.2 g/d for the least efficient cows, which was 22.4 g/d more than the most efficient cows. Feed restriction had no significant effect on milk, body weight, or body weight change. Feed restriction reduced the variability of both milk energy and feed efficiencies, as shown by a decrease of their standard deviation from 0.87 to 0.69 kg of DM/d for feed efficiency and from 1.14 to 0.65 UFL/d for milk energy efficiency. Despite narrow efficiency differences, the most efficient cows during ad libitum feeding remained more efficient during feed restriction (r = 0.46 for feed efficiency and 0.49 for milk energy efficiency). The 2 efficiency groups no longer differed in feed efficiency during precision feed restriction. Precision feed restriction seemed to bring the least efficient cows closer to the most efficient cows and to reduce their methane emissions without impairing their performance.

Abstract
The objective was to investigate the effects of feed restriction on concentrations of selected milk metabolites in mid-lactation Holstein and Montbéliarde cows and to explore their correlations with energy balance and classic plasma and milk indicators of nutritional status. Eight Holstein and 10 Montbéliarde cows (165 ± 21 d in milk) underwent 6 d of feed restriction during which feed allowance was reduced to meet 50% of their net energy for lactation (NEL) requirements. The experiment was divided in 4 periods: control (CON; d -3 to -1), restriction (RES; d 1 to 6), wk 1 (W1; d 7 to 13), and wk 2 (W2; d 14 to 18) after refeeding at ad libitum intake. Intake, milk production, energy balance and plasma metabolites were used to validate the feed restriction model. Concentrations of 7 milk metabolites: β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, glucose-6-phosphate, isocitrate, glutamate, uric acid, and free amino groups were measured in morning milk samples, and fatty acids were measured in pooled p.m. and a.m. samples. Feed restriction induced a negative energy balance (-42.5 ± 4.4 MJ/d), increased plasma nonesterified fatty acids and BHB, and decreased plasma glucose concentrations. Feed restriction increased milk glucose-6-phosphate and isocitrate (+38% and +39%, respectively) and decreased milk BHB, glucose, glutamate, uric acid and free amino group concentrations (-20%, -57%, -65%, -42%, and -14%, respectively), compared with pre- restriction. Milk concentrations of medium-chain fatty acids (e.g., sum of C10 to C15) decreased and those of long chain (e.g., 18:0, cis-9 18:1) increased during restriction. Breed differences were not detected for the majority of variables. All studied milk metabolites were significantly correlated with energy balance (Spearman correlation = 0.48, 0.63, -0.31, -0.45, and 0.61 for BHB, glucose, glucose-6-phosphate, isocitrate, and glutamate, respectively). Milk glucose and glutamate showed the strongest correlations with plasma metabolites and milk FA associated with lipomobilization. These results suggest that milk metabolites may be used as noninvasive indicators of negative energy balance and metabolic status of dairy cows.

Abstract
The mammary tissue is characterized by its capacity to adapt in response to a wide variety of changing conditions. This adaptation capacity is referred to as the plasticity of mammary tissue. In dairy ruminants, lactation is challenged by modifications that can either be induced on purpose, such as by modifying management practices, or occur involuntarily, when adverse environmental constraints arise. These modifications can elicit both immediate changes in milk yield and composition and carryover effects that persist after the end of the challenge. This review focuses on the current knowledge concerning the cellular mechanisms underlying mammary tissue plasticity. The main mechanisms contributing to this phenomenon are changes in the activity and number of mammary epithelial cells (MECs). Changes in the number of these cells result from variations in the rates of cell proliferation and death as well as changes in the rate MEC exfoliation. The number of MECs also depends on the number of resident adult mammary stem cells and their progenitors, which can regenerate the pools of the various mammary cells. Several challenges, including changes in milking frequency, changes in level of feed supply and hormonal manipulations, have been shown to modulate milk yield together with changes in mammary cell activity, turnover and exfoliation. Epigenetic changes may be an additional mechanism of adaptation. Indeed, changes in DNA methylation and reductions in milk yield have been observed during once-daily milking and during mastitis in dairy cows and may affect cell activity persistently. In contrast to what has been assumed for a long time, no carryover effect on milk yield were observed after feed supply challenges in dairy cows and modification of milking frequency in dairy goats, even though the number of mammary cells was affected. In addition, mammary tissue plasticity has been shown to be influenced by the stage of lactation, health status and genetic factors. In conclusion, the cellular mechanisms underlying mammary tissue plasticity are diverse, and the mammary tissue either does or does not show elastic properties (with no permanent deformation), in response to environmental changes.

Abstract
Secretory capacity of bovine mammary glands is enabled by a high number of secretory cells and their ability to use a range of metabolites to produce milk components. We isolated RNA from milk fat to measure expression of genes involved in energy-yielding pathways and the unfolded protein response in mammary glands of lactating cows given supplemental energy from protein (PT) and fat (FT) tested in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. We hypothesized that PT and FT would affect expression of genes in the branched-chain AA catabolic pathway and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle based on the different energy types (aminogenic versus lipogenic) used to synthesize milk components. We also hypothesized that the response of genes related to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis via the unfolded protein response would reflect the increase in milk production stimulated by PT and FT. Fifty-six multiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were fed a basal total mixed ration (34% grass silage, 33% corn silage, 5% grass hay, and 28% concentrate on a dry matter basis) for a 28-d control period. Experimental rations were then fed for 28 d, consisting of (1) low protein, low fat (LP/LF); (2) high protein, low fat (HP/LF); (3) low protein, high fat (LP/HF); or (4) high protein and high fat (HP/HF). To obtain the high-protein (HP) and high-fat (HF) diets, intake of the basal ration was restricted and supplemented isoenergetically (net energy basis) with 2.0 kg/d rumen-protected protein (soybean + rapeseed, 50:50 mixture on dry matter basis) and 0.68 kg/d hydrogenated palm fatty acids on a dry matter basis. RNA from milk fat samples collected on d 27 of each period underwent real-time quantitative PCR. Energy from protein increased expression of BCAT1 (branched-chain amino acid transferase 1) mRNA, but only at the LF level, and tended to decrease expression of mRNA encoding the main subunit of the branched-chain keto-acid dehydrogenase complex. mRNA expression of malic enzyme, a proposed channeling route for AA though the TCA cycle, was decreased by PT, but only at the LF level. Expression of genes associated with de novo fatty acid synthesis was not affected by PT or FT. Energy from fat had no independent effect on genes related to ER homeostasis. At the LF level, PT activated XBP1 (X-box binding protein 1) mRNA. At the HF level, PT increased mRNA expression of the gene encoding GADD34 (growth arrest and DNA damage-inducible 34). These findings support our hypothesis that mammary cells use aminogenic and lipogenic precursors differently for milk component production when dietary intervention alters AA and fatty acid supply. They also suggest that mammary cells respond to increased AA supply through mechanisms of ER homeostasis, dependent on the presence of FT.

Abstract
In dairy cows, feed restriction is known to decrease milk yield by reducing the number of mammary epithelial cells (MEC) in the udder through a shift in the MEC proliferation-apoptosis balance, by reducing the metabolic activity of MEC, or both. The exfoliation of MEC from the mammary epithelium into milk is another process that may participate in regulating the number of MEC during feed restriction. The aim of the present study was to clarify the mechanisms that underlie the milk yield loss induced by feed restriction. Nineteen Holstein dairy cows producing 40.0 ± 0.7 kg/d at 77 ± 5 d in milk were divided into a control group (n = 9) and a feed-restricted group (n = 10). Ad libitum dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded during a pre-experimental period of 2 wk. For 29 d (period 1), cows were fed either 100 (control) or 80% (feed-restricted) of their ad libitum DMI measured during the pre-experimental period. Then, all cows were fed ad libitum for 35 d (period 2). Milk production and DMI were recorded daily. Blood and milk samples were collected once during the pre-experimental period; on d 5, 9, and 27 of period 1; and on d 5, 9, and 30 of period 2. Mammary epithelial cells were purified from milk using an immunomagnetic method to determine the rate of MEC exfoliation. Mammary tissue samples were collected by biopsy at the end of each period to analyze the rates of cell proliferation and apoptosis and the expression of genes involved in synthesizing constituents of milk. Feed restriction decreased milk yield by 3 kg/d but had no effect on rates of proliferation and apoptosis in the mammary tissue or on the expression of genes involved in milk synthesis. The daily MEC exfoliation rate was 65% greater in feed-restricted cows than in control cows. These effects in feed-restricted cows were associated with reduced insulin-like growth factor-1 and cortisol plasma concentrations. When all cows returned to ad libitum feeding, no significant difference on milk yield or MEC exfoliation rate was observed between feed-restricted and control cows, but refeeding increased prolactin release during milking. These results show that the exfoliation process may play a role in regulating the number of MEC in the udders of dairy cows during feed restriction without any carryover effect on their milk production.

Reproductive performance in dairy cows can be improved through genetic selection and herd management. Milk protein concentration is strongly associated with various measures of reproductive performance, but the relative importance of genetic and environmental components of these associations have not been defined. The primary objective of this study was to estimate the magnitudes of correlations and covariances between 9 reproductive performance traits in dairy cows and each of milk protein concentration and milk yield at 4 levels: genetic, permanent environmental effects of cow, herd-year-season, and residual levels. A retrospective single cohort study was conducted using data collected from seasonally and split calving dairy herds. We used animal models to partition covariances for the relationships between 9 fertility traits and each of milk protein concentration and milk yield at lactation level, with up to 80,203 lactations from 27,244 cows that were 780 herd-year-seasons in 65 herds. For the fertility traits, of the explained covariance with milk protein concentration, between 33 and 79% (median 53%) was genetic and 21 to 67% (median 47%) was nongenetic. We concluded that research should be conducted to identify management strategies that capture the nongenetic components of relationships between milk protein concentration and reproductive performance. Genetic correlations with milk protein concentration were generally similar to genetic correlations with milk yield, but the correlation with milk protein concentration was closer (i.e., the absolute value of the correlation coefficient was nearer to 1) for pregnant by wk 6, a key trait for seasonally and split calving dairy herds (correlation coefficient ± standard error = 0.28 ± 0.05 and -0.17 ± 0.07 for milk protein concentration and milk yield, respectively). As the associations also have substantial genetic components, it is possible that reliabilities of estimated breeding values for fertility may be improved by including milk protein concentration in multitrait genetic evaluation models for fertility traits. From our preliminary analyses, reliabilities were only slightly higher when pregnancy by wk 6 of the breeding period was analyzed with milk protein concentration rather than alone or with milk yield, but further research should be considered to assess this question. Importantly, the benefits of these strong relationships can only be fully harnessed through joint use of both management strategies and genetic strategies.

Abstract
The global population is expected to increase from 7.6 to 9.6 billion people from 2017 to 2050. Increased demand for livestock production and rising global temperatures have made heat stress (HS) a major challenge for the dairy industry. HS been shown to have negative effects on production parameters such as dry matter intake, milk yield, and feed efficiency. In addition to affecting production parameters, HS has also been shown to have negative effects on the reproductive functions of dairy cows. Mitigation of HS effects on dairy cow productivity and fertility necessitate the strategic planning of nutrition, and environmental conditions. The current review will discuss the potential nutriepigenomic strategies to mitigate the effect of HS on bovine embryo.
