Abstract
The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of different milk flow-rate switch-point settings on milking duration, somatic cell count (SCC), strip milk, teat condition, and milk yield in a grass-based system in a long-term experiment. Much work has already been conducted providing strong support for significant reduction in milking duration without effects on yield through increasing the flow-rate switch-point at which vacuum to the milking cluster ceases and the cluster is removed from the cow by means of a retracting cord. However, in practice many farms have not adopted this labor-saving technology on the basis that it may increase milk SCC. Recent research on commercial Irish dairy herds identified the contagious mastitis-causing pathogen Staphylococcus. aureus as the most prevalent pathogen detected. Staph. aureus could have a cyclical shedding pattern which would inhibit detection at certain time points. Therefore, to reliably assess the effect of milk flow-rate switch-points on SCC, a long-term study was required, consisting of multiple observations on cow-level SCC. The present study filled this gap in knowledge by informing on any effect that ceasing milking at different flow rates may have on milking duration and SCC levels, particularly with regard to spring calving grass-based systems. Four treatments, consisting of milk flow-rate switch-points increasing from 0.2 kg/min to 0.8 kg/min in steps of 0.2 kg/min, were deployed for 31 wk to cows at the Teagasc Research Centre at Moorepark, Ireland. The effect of treatment on daily milking duration was significant. The milking duration for a milk flow-rate switch-point of 0.8 kg/min was 95 s (14%) shorter than for 0.2 kg/min. We did not find a significant effect of increasing the milk flow-rate switch-point from 0.2 to 0.8 kg/min on milk yield or SCC in this long-term study. We did find a significant effect of week of experiment on milk SCC, whereby the SCC of the cows on the experiment increased similarly among treatment groups as lactation progressed. A significant reduction in dead time (time from cluster attachment to reach a milk flow rate of 0.2 kg/min) was also noted as the milk flow-rate switch-point increased. On average, reductions in dead time contributed 12% to the overall reductions in milking duration. Similarly, reductions in low flow time (time from a flow rate of 0.2 kg/min to cluster detachment at the end of milking) contributed 26% to the overall reductions in milking duration. Reductions in dead time and low flow time played a greater role in reducing p.m. milking duration rather than a.m. milking duration due to the milking interval practiced on the research farm.

Abstract
To maximise the return on capital invested in the milking parlour, the largest number of cows should be milked gently and completely in the shortest possible time. Bimodal milk flow and overmilking negatively influence the efficiency of the milk removal process and teat health. This observational study had the objective of investigating the prevalence of bimodal milk flow and overmilking, determining which individual and farm-related variables are associated with these occurrences, and determining the association of overmilking and bimodal milk flow with milk yield and with short- and long-term teat changes. Twenty-one farms were visited once during the study period, wherein the milking routine was timed, the teat condition was assessed, and dynamic evaluation of the milking vacuum was performed. A total of 606 vacuum graphic records were obtained, with an average of 29 ± 3 records per farm, in order to indirectly evaluate the milk flow and thus determine the occurrence of bimodal milking and overmilking time. The average percentage of bimodality per farm was 41.7%. The median overmilking time was 59 seconds, and on average, 78.3% of the cows in a herd were overmilked longer than 30 seconds. An association was found at cow level between the occurrence of bimodal milk flow and days in milk, the total stimulation time, parity, and the preparation lag time. The increase in the mean total stimulation time and the number of passes during preparation were associated with a decrease in the proportion of bimodality in the herd. Parity, reattachment of the milking unit and milking in manual mode were associated with an increase in overmilking time of an individual cow. The presence of a clogged air bleed hole in the claw and the reduction of the cluster removal milk flow threshold were associated with an increase in the herd's median overmilking time. The average milk flow decreased with the increase in overmilking time and with the occurrence of bimodal milk flow. An association was also found between the occurrence of bimodal milk flow and decreased milk yield. A mean of 78.4% of cows per farm had short-term teat changes in at least one teat, and 33.6% of evaluated cows per farm displayed at least one teat with hyperkeratosis. These results emphasise the association of bimodality and overmilking on milking efficiency and reinforce the importance of the milkers' actions and the functioning of the milking parlour for its prevention.

Abstract
Adequate prestimulation is considered a requirement for a fast, gentle, and complete udder emptying at machine milking. Reduced vacuum or reduced liner-open phase of pulsation (or both) may replace prestimulation and consequently reduce work load of the milker and increase parlor efficiency. In the present study we compared 2 milking routines (MR) with manual prestimulation (LPrep = long preparation: 15 s of forestripping, teat cleaning, and stimulation; SPrep = short preparation: 5 s of teat cleaning) followed by 1-min latency period and milking at standard vacuum and pulsation settings (claw vacuum 44 kPa, pulsation rate 60 cycles/min, pulsation ratio 65/35) with 2 MR consisting of 5 s of teat cleaning, immediate cluster attachment and milking at reduced vacuum with or without shortened liner-open phase of pulsation until milk flow exceeded 400 g/min (RP = reduced pulsation: pulsation ratio 30/70, pulsation rate 50 cycles/min, claw vacuum 44 kPa; RPV = reduced pulsation and vacuum: pulsation ratio 30/70, pulsation rate 50 cycles/min, claw vacuum 34 kPa). Cluster detachment was performed at 400 g/min in all MR. Ten Holstein dairy cows were milked twice daily at 14-h and 10-h milking intervals. Milk flow and electrical conductivity (EC) were recorded throughout milking. During the first 2 min of each milking ultrasound cross-section images of the gland cistern of one front quarter were recorded, and 5 min after the end of milking teat tissue thickness of both front teats was measured by using a cutimeter. Most milking characteristics such as total milk yield, average milk flow, and machine-on time reached higher values at 14-h than 10-h milking intervals, but did not differ among MR. However, the occupancy time (time from the first touch of the udder until cluster detachment) was considerably shorter in RP and RPV compared with LPrep and SPrep. Ultrasound cross section areas of the gland cistern were larger in LPrep than in RP and RPV indicating that milk ejection already occurred at cluster attachment in LPrep. This assumption is also supported by the lower EC at cluster attachment in LPrep than in RP and RPV, which was caused by the presence of alveolar milk in the gland cistern after milk ejection. The MR RP and RPV increase parlor efficiency and are work-saving alternatives to MR, which include an adequate prestimulation (LPrep). However, shortening prestimulation to a 5-s teat cleaning followed by a latency period and milking at regular vacuum and pulsation is not adequate to save occupancy time. Because milking was performed at a relatively low vacuum (44 kPa) and at a detachment level of 400 g/min, teat tissue thickness did not differ among MR, and the vacuum reduction in RPV did not cause an additional advantage for teat condition compared with RP.

Abstract
Objective of this review paper is the appraisal of predisposing factors for bacterial mastitis in ewes. Factors that predispose ewes to mastitis can be classified into non-animal-related factors (environmental and climatological factors, housing, nutrition, milking practices) and animal-related factors (anatomic, genetic, litter size-ethological factors, number and stage of lactation period, health problems). There are clear management-environment-animal interactions in mastitis development in ewes, which underline its multifactorial nature. Research and studies regarding risk factors are important, in order to develop strategies for their elimination, control or correction. Control measures for bacterial mastitis, which attempt to eliminate predisposing factors for infection, can thus be developed and implemented.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze bacterial profiles of bovine mastitic milk samples and samples from healthy quarters using Next Generation Sequencing of amplicons from 16S rRNA genes and to compare results with microbiological results by PCR assays of the same samples. A total of 49 samples were collected from one single dairy herd during the same day. The samples were divided in two sample sets, which were used in this study. The DNA extraction as well as the library preparation and sequencing of these two sets were performed separately, and results of the two datasets were then compared. The vast majority of genera detected appeared with low read numbers and/or in only a few samples. Results of PCR and microbiome analyses of samples infected with major pathogens Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus uberis were consistent as these genera also covered the majority of reads detected in the microbiome analysis. Analysis of alpha diversity revealed a much higher species richness in set 1 than in set 2. The dominating bacterial genera with the highest read numbers clearly differed between datasets, especially in PCR negative samples and samples positive for minor pathogens. In addition to this, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was conducted between the two sets to identify significantly different genera/family level microbes. The genus Methylobacterium was much more common in set 2 compared to set 1, and genus Streptococcus more common in set 1. Our results indicate amplification of contaminating bacteria in excess in samples with no or minor amounts of pathogen DNA in dataset 2. There is a need for critical assessment of results of milk microbiome analyses.

Abstract
Recent research into how the pulsation type affects goat milking concluded that alternate pulsation (AP) and simultaneous pulsation (SP) similarly affect the milking efficiency (milking duration and milking fractioning) and teat end condition after milking when both pulsations are employed in short-term experiments. However, the use of SP in high pipeline milking machines led to higher vacuum fluctuations, which, in the long term, may entail a potential risk factor for the mammary gland health status. The aim of this work was to study how AP and SP affect the milk yield, mammary gland health status, and milk composition of goats in the long term, during a complete lactation period, in a high pipeline milking machine. With this objective, 100 Murciano-Granadina goats with similar parturition dates (4 ± 1 postpartum weeks) were divided into 2 similar groups (50 goats per group) according their parity, milk yield, mammary gland health status, and milking duration (after a 15-d pre-experimental period). Throughout the experimental period (7 mo), one group was milked using SP and the other group using AP. Every month, samplings were carried out of the variables related to sanitary status of the mammary gland, milk fractioning, milking duration, average and maximum milk flows, milk composition, teat end status, vacuum fluctuations at the short milk tube during milking, and pulsation tests. Results showed that the use of SP in a high pipeline milking machine showed higher vacuum fluctuations without involving any difference in the other variables studied. We concluded that the use of AP in the milking of Murciano-Granadina goats offers little improvement of the milking performance and increases the investment required for installation and maintenance of the milking machines.

Abstract
The research paper presents a prototype system controlling the flow of milk in the collection column of an autonomous milking apparatus. In the Matlab®-Simulink program, the simulation model of such a system was created. Its essential operation is illustrated in the block diagrams. The logic verification of the model’s operational accuracy (off-line simulation) did not reveal errors. Therefore a laboratory stand for hardware verification – (on-line simulation) was developed. Within it a virtual feedback loop of the control system (stored in computer memory), with elements of real object control incorporated – in this way a prototype of the device was created. During the hardware verification of the proposed technical solution, operation errors were not observed. In response to certain signals from the measuring elements, the controller correctly calculated control signals for the actuators.

Abstract
This Research Paper addresses the hypothesis that using teatcups with automatic valves, without cutting off the vacuum prior to cluster removal, could increases the risk of mastitis and affect other milking variables on goats. A first trial used 46 intramammary infection (IMI)-free goats that had been milked with normal teatcups (without automatic valves) during a pre-experimental period of 8 ± 2 d postpartum. These animals were divided into two groups (n = 23), randomly assigning each group to teatcups with automatic valves (teatcups A) or without automatic valves (teatcups B) for a 20-week experimental period. During this period, several strategies were applied to increase teat exposure to pathogens in both experimental groups. In the first eight weeks of the experimental period, the new IMI rate per gland was significantly higher (P < 0·05) in the group of animals milked with teatcups A (6 of 46; 13%) than in the group milked with teatcups B (1 of 46; 2%). However, throughout the rest of the experimental period the same number of glands appeared with new IMI (n = 7) in both animal groups. SCC was higher in goats milked with teatcups A, but no significant differences were found in the remaining variables (milk production and composition, frequency of liner slips + teatcup fall-off). In a second experiment, in a crossover design (54 goats in fourth month of lactation, 2 treatments – teatcups A and B – in 2 experimental periods each lasting 1 week), no differences were observed in total milk, average milk flow, total milking time or teat thickness changes after milking between both teatcups. However, teatcups A worsened slightly the maximum milk flow. We concluded that the use of teatcups with automatic valves, without cutting off the vacuum prior to cluster removal, increases the risk of mastitis on goat livestock farms.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the effect on teat wall thickness and canal length in sheep and goats of overmilking for 2 min (OM+2) and of milking with used (AL; +3000 milkings) and twisted (TL; 45°) liners in sheep and goats, as well as the effect of milking goats with liners designed for sheep (SL, shorter length and diameter than liners for goats). To this end, we performed four experiments in goats and three in sheep, in a Latin square design with two experimental periods. During the experimental period 4 controls were carried out, performing ultrasound scans before and immediately after milking to determine the teat wall thickness (TWT), teat wall area (TWA), teat end area (TEWA) and teat canal length (TCL). OM+2 caused a significant increase in TWT, TWA, TEWA and TCL in goats and in TWA, TEWA and TCL in sheep. Liner features had a strong influence on the variables studied; aged liners caused significant changes in TWT and TCL in goats and in TWT in sheep; twisted liners produced a significant effect on the increase of TWT and TCL in goats, without reaching significance level in sheep; and milking goats with sheep liners led to a significant increase in TWT, TWA, TEWA and TCL. In practice, it is therefore important to avoid overmilking and the use of worn-out liners. It is also necessary to use liners designed for the morphological features of each species, taking special care to carry out periodic liner positioning revisions to ensure the benefits of pulsation on the teat end. Finally, it would be necessary to carry out long-term experiments to study whether the increase in thickness observed in some experiments is sufficient to affect milking efficiency and mammary gland health status.

Abstract
Two experiments were carried out to compare mechanical milking in mid-level (ML) and low-level (LL) milkline in goats. The first trial used 40 intramammary infection (IMI)-free goats that had been milked in ML during a pre-experimental period of 4±1 weeks post partum. These animals were divided into two groups (n=20), randomly assigning each group to ML or LL milking for a 17-week experimental period. During this period, several strategies were applied to increase teat exposure to pathogens in both experimental groups. The IMI rate was the same in both experimental groups (30% of goats), although the majority of new infections appeared earlier in ML (weeks 1–5) than in LL (weeks 7–16). Teat-end vacuum range (maximum minus minimum vacuum) was higher in ML than in LL, but no significant differences were found in the remaining variables [milk production and composition, somatic cell count (SCC), frequency of liner slips+teatcups fall off]. In the second experiment, in a crossover design (54 goats in fourth month of lactation; 2 treatments, ML and LL, in 2 experimental periods each lasting 1 week) it was observed that both the milk fractioning (reduced machine milk and increased machine stripping) and average machine milk flow worsened slightly in ML milking; in contrast, no differences were observed in total milking time or teat thickness changes after milking. It was concluded that the differences found between ML and LL are not sufficiently important to discourage breeders from using ML in goat milking.

Abstract
The primary method of spread for S agalactiae and S aureus is from cow to cow, so prevention focuses on within and between herd biosecurity to reduce or eliminate the reservoir of infection. S agalactiae is an obligate pathogen of the mammary gland, whereas S aureus is more widespread on other cow body sites and in the environment. Both organisms cause persistent infections, with S agalactiae typically causing higher SCC and bacteria counts in milk. Conventional methods of detection through culture perform well at the cow level. In bulk tanks, augmented procedures should be considered. PCR methods show promise of high sensitivity and specificity, at both the cow and bulk tank level. In developed dairy industries, prevalence of infection has decreased dramatically over the past 30 years for S agalactiae. For S aureus, the herd level of infection remains very high, although with rigorous, consistent application of control measures, within-herd prevalence has decreased. Because the milking time is the primary period for new IMI, it is the focal point of most prevention activities. Premilking and postmilking teat disinfection and proper stimulation and milk-out with adequately functioning equipment are key factors. There is growing evidence that the use of milking gloves is an integral part of contagious mastitis control and the production of high-quality milk. Treatment success is dramatically different between the 2 pathogens. For S agalactiae, eradication can be completed rapidly through a culture and treatment program with minimal culling. For S aureus, treatment success, particularly during lactation, is often disappointing and depends on cow, pathogen, and treatment factors. These factors should be reviewed prior to initiating any treatment to determine the potential for cure. Blanket dry cow therapy and strategic culling are important control procedures for contagious mastitis pathogens. Maintaining a closed herd or, at minimum, adhering to clearly defined biosecurity protocols is critical to reduce risk of reintroduction of S agalactiae or the addition of new, potentially more virulent strains of S aureus to endemic herds.

Abstract
Efficient milking systems, in terms of labour demand, capital investment and cow udder health are critical to successful dairy herd expansion. The objective of this study was to establish the effect of two primary influencing factors on efficient milking performance, i.e. parlour size (number of milking units) and pre-milking routine (full and nil) of spring-calved cows, in a single-operator side-by-side, swing-over milking parlour. Efficiency parameters investigated in a 5×2 factorial design included milk-flow and yield, row time, over-milking duration and operator idle time. Five combinations of parlour size (14, 18, 22, 26 and 30 milking units) each with two different pre-milking routines (Full: spray, strip, wipe, attach clusters, and Nil: attach clusters) were examined with one milking operator. The trial was carried out over 40 milking sessions and cows (up to 120) were randomly assigned to groups (n=14, 18, 22, 26 or 30) before each milking session. Row within a milking session was the experimental unit. The experiment was carried out at both peak and late lactation. The data were analysed with a mixed model using GenStat 13.2. The full pre-milking routine reduced time to milk let-down and milking time, increased average flow rate but did not affect milk yield. As milking unit number increased, the duration of over-milking (defined as time at milk flow rate <0·2 kg/min) increased more with a full compared with nil routine. Thus, the use of pre-milking preparation decreased milking time per cow but as parlour size increased, milking row times, as well as the proportion of cows that were over-milked, also increased, thereby reducing overall efficiency. These results have implications for milking management in single-operator swing-over, tandem and rotary parlours with seasonally calved herds.

Abstract
The main objective of the study was to determine whether the amount of air intake during quarter milking influences the concentration of free fatty acids (FFA) and vacuum fluctuations at the teat end when milking automatically. Air intake in the teat cup was restricted from the normal inlet of 4.5 to 7 L/min to 1.7 and 0 L/min on 2 farms and experiments were carried out as half-udder studies with 40 cows. Blockage of the air inlet reduced FFA from 1.02 to 0.77 mEq/100 g of fat in one herd and from 1.50 to 1.17 mEq/100 g of fat in the other herd. Milk yield per milking was the most significant factor influencing FFA. Air intake accounted for <20% of the variation in FFA concentration. Characteristics of the cow explained the most variation, which could mainly be assigned to the effects of milk yield, fat percentage, fat globule size, and fat globule size distribution. The interval between milkings was not significant when adjusting for milk yields. Blockage of the air inlet caused vacuum fluctuations at the teat end to increase from 15.4 to 21.5 kPa for one model of an automatic milking system (AMS), but from 12.8 to 53.6 kPa for another model. Measurements made with a flow simulator and water revealed that the AMS model and water flow were the most important factors influencing vacuum fluctuations, and that interactions existed between the diameter of the short milk tube and air intake. Free fatty acids in bulk milk from 5,980 herds averaged 0.75 mEq/L of milk for conventional herds and varied from 0.77 to 0.94 mEq/L of milk for the 5 AMS models on the Danish market. Fault detection in 55 herds pointed out that the most frequent faults in conventional herds were air leakages and intake of too much air in the cluster, whereas AMS herds had problems with the cooling and stirring of milk. Correction of the cooling faults caused FFA to decrease by 0.52 mEq/L in the AMS herds. We concluded that air intake during automatic milking is not the most important factor in reducing FFA, whereas milk yield per milking matters the most. More attention should be paid to the cooling and stirring of milk. Reducing the air intake causes vacuum fluctuations during milking to increase significantly.

Abstract
Technical success and effectiveness of teat cleaning and the management factors associated with them were evaluated in 9 automatic milking herds. In total, 616 teats cleaned with a cleaning cup and 716 teats cleaned with rotating brushes were included. Technical success and the effectiveness of teat cleaning, including the location and nature of the dirt, were evaluated visually. On average, 79.9% of teat cleanings with a cleaning cup, and 85.0% of those cleaned with brushes succeeded technically; that is, the teat was correctly positioned in the cleaning device throughout the whole cleaning process. The difference between use of teat cups and brushes was significant. However, because technical success of teat cleaning is strongly dependent on herd characteristics, these results should be interpreted with caution. Factors associated with the technical success of teat cleaning with a cleaning cup were herd, days in milk, behavior of the cow, teat color, and teat location. For rotating brushes, behavior of the cow, teat location, udder and teat structure, and days in milk were associated with technical success. Excessive udder hair and technical failure of the automatic milking machine also caused a few technically unsuccessful teat cleanings with a cleaning cup. Teats with technically successful teat cleanings were evaluated for the effectiveness of teat cleaning. From originally dirty teats, the cleaning cup had a significant advantage over the brushes in the percentage of teats that became clean or almost clean during the cleaning process (79.8 vs. 72.9%). Teat orifices were least effectively cleaned compared with the teat barrel and apex. Bedding material (peat, sawdust, or straw) on the teat was cleaned almost completely. Factors associated with the effectiveness of teat cleaning were teat cleanliness before cleaning, herd, teat cleaning method, and teat condition. The variation among herds indicates the likelihood that herd management factors can be adjusted to improve milking hygiene. There is also a need to improve the precision and effectiveness of the teat cleaning mechanisms of automatic milking systems.

Abstract
French dairy herds were selected on a national basis through the "Zero Mastitis Objective" Program (ZMP) to display hygiene and milking practices characterizing very low somatic cell score (SCS) herds. The herds selected were stratified in 2 groups. The first group (LOW) included 187 herds within the first 5 percentiles of herds regarding mean SCS for the 36 mo preceding ZMP (36-mo SCS). The second group (MED) included 117 herds within the 50 to 55th percentile of herds regarding 36-mo SCS. Mean milk SCS was 3.09 in the MED herds vs. 1.99 in the LOW herds, which corresponded to 265,000 and 135,000 cells/mL respectively. Moreover, LOW and MED herds did not change from one SCS category to another during ZMP. Potentially explanatory variables, collected by formally trained dairy management experts through observations from attendance at milking and farm visits, were analyzed using multistep logistic regression models. According to final model and expert observations, the probability for a herd to belong to the LOW group was maximized when: 1) winter cleanliness of dry cow shed was good; 2) use of teat spraying was carried out; and 3) California Mastitis Tests were performed at milking. Moreover, the herd probability of belonging to the MED group was maximized when: 1) air admission at teat cup attachment was observed during milking; 2) winter cleanliness of dry cow shed was poor; and 3) the milker spent time during milking to feed calves. Finally, the study highlighted milking and hygiene variables and attitudes appearing as key practices to control herd SCS through precise and safe milking and more attention paid to individual animals and cleanliness of dry cow shed.

Abstract
The effects of vacuum level and overmilking on udder health were studied in ewes. Vacuum levels of 36 and 42 kPa were assigned to two groups of 23 Manchega ewes in a crossover study design with two experimental periods of 5 wk for each. Moreover, for each ewe, one teat was overmilked 1.5 to 2 min at all milkings during these 10 wk. The milking machine used had a midlevel milkline and pulsation was fixed at 180 cycles per min and a pulsation ratio of 50:50. Bacterial exposure of all teats was increased by dipping them in a suspension of Staphylococcus simulans at eight milkings of each period. New intramammary infections (IMI) were not significantly affected by the vacuum level used (18 and 23% of ewes infected, at 36 and 42 kPa, respectively) or application of overmilking (9 and 11% of half udders infected without and with overmilking, respectively). Likewise, neither factor significantly affected the somatic cell count (SCC) of the milk. Teat thickness changes after milking varied significantly due to the presence of overmilking (-13.6 and -7.4%, in teats not overmilked and overmilked, respectively) but were not affected by vacuum level. At no time were any lesions or variations visibly noted in the teat walls or orifice. So, in this work we were unable to demonstrate that the vacuum and overmilking levels assayed, both used with a pulsation rate of 180 cycles/min, have an important effect on the state of udder health in the short term. Furthermore, it was also observed that, in absence of IMI, the two factors studied did not cause irritation of any kind in the gland that might influence the SCC of the milk.

Abstract
In this work on machine milking of ewes, pulsation rates of 120 and 180 cycles per min were compared, both with a pulsation ratio of 50:50 and a vacuum level of 36 kPa, comparing intramammary infection (IMI), somatic cell count (SCC) and teat end thickness changes. To this end, two groups of 20 Manchega ewes were used in a crossover experimental design with two experimental periods of 24 d for each. Bacterial exposure of all teats was increased by dipping them in a suspension of Staphylococcus simulans at four consecutive milkings of each period. Pulsation rate of 180 cycles per min, compared with 120 cycles per min, had no negative effect upon new IMI (11 and 16% of ewes infected, respectively) and SCC. No teat end lesions were observed in those animals milked with the two pulsations assayed. Also, teat thickness changes (-0.38 and -0.36 mm at 120 and 180 cycles per min, respectively) were not affected significantly. Finally, in absence of IMI, the two pulsation rates assayed did not affect the SCC.
