Pelvic chodroma in the left obturator foramen: The first case report

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE

Chondroma is a benign and slow-growing tumour usually located in the hand and foot. Although many cases reported pelvic chondroma, to the best of our knowledge, this case is number one in the world because of the location of the sensitive tumour within the obturator foramen, and we did not review any case mentioned in the medical literature corresponding to our case.

CASE PRESENTATION

A 9-years-old male presented to our hospital, complaining of an inguinal mass, the patient had no history of pelvic discomfort. Computed tomography showed a hard mass in the left inguinal region. By open surgery, we extracted the mass. The patient was discharged after 4 days with no complaints.

CLINICAL DISCUSSION

Pelvic chondroma is one of the challenging cases that orthopedist's face. We presented a patient with a very hard, painless, not rubefacient and fixed on palpation mass. Computed tomography is considered an imaging study to evaluate such patients. Most cases of chondroma are treated by performing open surgery to extract the mass.

CONCLUSION

Pelvic chondroma should be extracted by open surgery in order not to extend to nearby tissue and hurt urinary and reproductive organs. The follow-up of these patients is essential, by imaging and pathological studies. Checking family history up is necessary, but in our case, there is no.

Soft-Tissue Chondroma in the Right Hallux: A Case Report

Soft-tissue chondroma is a rare, benign tumor. It is predominantly found in the hands and feet, but rarely in the toes. In this article, we report a digital soft-tissue chondroma that presented as a painful nodule of 5 years' duration in a 67-year-old man. Physical examination revealed a round, solid, movable nodule measuring 7 mm in diameter. Radiographs showed faint linear calcifications in the nodule under the right hallux proximal phalanx neck. The mass was completely excised, and pathologic observation revealed a mass composed of mature chondrocytes in a cartilaginous matrix, consistent with a chondroma. Even though this is a benign tumor, it needs to be differentiated from other tumors, including schwannoma, leiomyoma, chondrosarcoma, and others. Surgical excision is the preferred treatment.

A Rare Case of Acute-Onset Spastic Quadriparesis Caused by a Chondroma of the Cervical Spine

Chondromas are benign cartilaginous tumors that occur very rarely in the spine. Moreover, chondromas of the extraskeletal origin are also very rare. In this case report, we describe an extremely rare case of chondroma arising from the ligamentum flavum in the cervical spine. A 67-year-old man presented to our clinic with acute-onset spastic quadriparesis. We performed emergent magnetic resonance imaging and found an epidural mass in the right ligamentum flavum at C4-C5. The acute-onset presentation was suspicious for intraligamentous hematoma in the ligamentum flavum at this level. We performed emergency decompression surgery and en bloc removal of the epidural mass with the right C4 and C5 lamina. The lesion had the appearance of cartilaginous tissue rather than hematoma. Based on the histological investigation, the final diagnosis was intraligamentous chondroma of the cervical spine. The quadriparesis improved postoperatively, as did the results of manual muscle testing in the affected area, and he was able to resume walking independently with a cane. At the one-year follow-up, the manual muscle testing results were almost normal. Surgeons should keep in mind the possibility of benign tumors including chondroma of the cervical spine when a patient presents with acute-onset quadriparesis.

Extra bone chondroma of the shoulder: a case study and literature review

Extra-osseous chondroma is a benign and rare tumor. It usually sits at the extremities, we report an exceptional case of a chondroma of the soft parts of the shoulder in a 28 year old woman who manifested by a painless swelling of the left shoulder. The histology confirmed the diagnosis on the excision piece. Clinical and radiological follow-up after a 24-month follow-up did not show a sign of recurrence.

Imaging of rare appendicular non-acral soft-tissue chondromas in adults with histopathologic correlation

Background Soft-tissue chondroma (STC) is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that arises primarily in acral extra-skeletal locations. Occasionally, STCs may arise in more proximal non-acral locations, accompanied by non-classic features that label them as indeterminate lesions and pose diagnostic challenge for both radiologists and pathologists alike. Purpose To explicate the potential of diagnostic imaging in the identification and characterization of appendicular non-acral STCs with emphasis on their morphologic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement. Material and Methods Our clinical database records were searched for patients with histologically proven primary soft-tissue chondroid lesions over a five-year period. Two musculoskeletal (MSK) trained radiologists evaluated the imaging studies and an MSK pathologist revised the pathological findings. Results The study included six cases of appendicular non-acral STCs (mean age = 40.5 years). The mean size of the tumors was 5.6 cm, with four localized to the knee region, one in the thigh, and one in the sternoclavicular region. All cases showed high signal intensity matrix with low-signal intensity septa on T2-weighted MRI and post-contrast marginal/septal enhancement. The lesions were lobulated and lacked host tissue reaction except for one showing subjacent mild soft-tissue edema. Histologically, the cases lacked overt features of malignancy although one was originally misdiagnosed as chondrosarcoma. Conclusion Non-acral STCs are benign cartilaginous tumors that may pose a diagnostic challenge, both radiologically and pathologically. Collaborative imaging and pathologic workup is needed for better characterization of non-aggression of these lesions, and to avoid diagnostic pitfalls and unnecessary radical resections.

Para-articular extraskeletal chondroma mimicking first metatarsophalangeal synovitis

Extraskeletal chondroma is a rare benign tumor with symptoms that could mimic other common musculoskeletal pathological entities. We present a rare case of an extraskeletal para-articular chondroma of the first metatarsophalangeal joint which was initially misinterpreted as joint synovitis, based on magnetic resonance imaging findings. Histology revealed benign chondroma of the foot, which was finally treated with radical surgical excision. More than 2 years postoperatively, no recurrence of the tumor has been encountered.

Il siège généralement au niveau des extrémités, nous rapportons un cas exceptionnel d'un chondrome des parties molles de la cuisse chez un homme de 35 ans qui s'est manifesté par une tuméfaction douloureuse de la face interne de la cuisse droite. L'histologie a confirmé le diagnostic sur la pièce d'exérèse. Un suivi clinique et radiologique après un recul de 24 mois n'a pas objectivé de signe de récidive.

Extraskeletal Chondroma of the Gluteal Region Along with Sporadic Neurofibroma - An Unusual Presentation

Extraskeletal or soft tissue chondroma is a benign cartilaginous tumour that predominantly involves the hands and feet. We present a rare case of gluteal extraskeletal chondroma in a 55-year-old Indian female. She presented with right gluteal mass measuring 5 cm in greatest dimension. The diagnosis was provided through histopathological examination of completely excised tumour mass. The patient also had sporadic neurofibroma in the supraclavicular region. Such a unique association has not been reported till date in the English literature. We describe the clinical and histopathological characteristics of our case, emphasizing the first reported association of extraskeletal chondroma and sporadic neurofibroma.

Soft tissue chondroma of the oral cavity: an extremely rare tumour localized on the hard palate

Chondromas are benign cartilaginous tumors usually localized within the tubular bones of the extremities. Soft tissue chondromas (STCs) are rare and only few cases have been reported in the oral cavity. The present case documents the exceptional finding of a 12-year-standing STC of the hard palate of a 63-year-old man. The tumor measured approximately 6 cm in its larger size and it was radically excised through the use of a quantic resonance molecular (QRM) lancet. No recurrence was observed during 1-year follow-up. A concise review of the relevant literature is included in the present paper.

Extraskeletal chondroma of the foot-a case report

Extraskeletal Chondroma (ESC) is uncommon which occurs predominantly in hands and feet. It has a variable histology, with two thirds of the ESCs showing mature hyaline cartilage which is arranged in distinct lobules with fibrosis, or ossification, or myxoid areas and few showing immature patterns, with chondroblasts mimicking extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcomas (ESMCSs). ESCs can recur but they never metastasize, whereas ESMCSs can metastasize, which require aggressive treatment. We are reporting a case of ESC which was located in the distal phalanx of right foot great toe in a 58-year-old male patient. The histopathology in our case showed features of ESC, with some foci showing myxoid stroma and few chondroblasts with atypical pleomorphic nuclei mimicking ESMCS. Hence, the case had to be carefully evaluated to exclude ESMCS and to make the diagnosis of ESC. The treatment was limited to simple excision of the tumour and extensive surgery and post operative radiotherapy were avoided.

Soft-tissue osteochondroma of the heel pad: a case report and review of literature

Extraskeletal osteochondroma of the foot are rare benign cartilaginous tumours. We present a case of soft-tissue osteochondroma in the heel pad superficial to the postero-inferior aspect of the calcaneus. We propose the pathogenesis of this lesion might be related to metaplasia in the plantar aponeurosis as described in literature, or it may be a fracture of the calcaneal osteochondroma, growing and presenting as soft-tissue lesion in the heel pad.

Extraskeletal osteochondroma of the foot

An extraskeletal osteochondroma is an infrequently encountered benign cartilaginous tumor with a predilection for the hands and feet that usually does not exceed 3 cm in diameter. This diagnosis can be misleading because it bears the same name as the osseous neoplasm more commonly referred to as an exostosis. The authors present an unusual case of a painful enlarging mass in the foot of a 28-year-old man who was later diagnosed as having an extraskeletal osteochondroma measuring in excess of 4 cm. Clinical, radiographic, and magnetic resonance images are provided along with intraoperative and histopathologic figures. There was no sign of recurrence 1 year after surgical excision. A review of the literature regarding this uncommon lesion is also presented.

[Soft-tissue chondroma of the hand. A new case]

The authors report the case of a multilocular tumour of the soft tissues of the hand and wrist which was removed by excision biopsy and which proved to be a chondroma arising from the soft tissues. Soft tissue chondromas consist of islands of heterotopic cartilaginous tissue and can equally affect the viscera as well as the limbs. The hypothesis that microtrauma is involved in the aetiology of this condition has yet to find any factual support. Simple excision-biopsy should suffice to treat the condition but care should be taken to make the excision complete if recurrences are to be avoided.
