Abstract
Regular welfare monitoring throughout rearing of pullets may help to identify problems early and take counteractions timely, which helps in guaranteeing good welfare. The aims of our observational study were (i) to establish and test a welfare monitoring system that can be used during (short) routine veterinary and technical staff visits for pullet flocks, (ii) to use the monitoring system to investigate variability between flocks and (iii) to analyse factors that potentially affect pullets' body weight, uniformity in body weight and mortality. The developed monitoring system tries to minimise the time required while not losing important information. Age-specific recording sheets comprise animal-based indicators of welfare and relevant environmental factors (housing, management, care) to allow for identifying causes of problems and targeted action. Finally, the system was implemented in a cross-sectional study and data collected in 100 flocks (67 organic, 33 conventional) on 28 rearing farms in Austria. Linear mixed models were used to identify factors influencing body weight, uniformity and mortality, both including all flocks (A) and only organic flocks (O) and a linear regression model with all flocks to investigate associations within animal-based indicators. High variability was found between flocks in animal-based indicators. Body weight was higher when the pre-rearing period was shorter (p ≤ 0.001, A&O), with higher intensities of light (p = 0.012, O), with only one compared to more stockpersons (p ≤ 0.007, A&O), with a higher number of flock visits per day (p ≤ 0.018, A&O), and a lower avoidance distance (p = 0.034, A). Body weight uniformity increased, with age and decreased with the duration of the light period (p = 0.046, A), and, amongst others, was higher on organic farms (farming type; p = 0.041). The latter may reflect a more uniform level of welfare due to a lower stocking density and lowered effects of social competition. Within organic flocks mortality was lower if pullets had access to a covered veranda (p = 0.025) resulting in an overall lower stocking density inside the barn, while in the model including all farms mortality was higher in cases where a disease had been diagnosed. We conclude that our monitoring system can easily be implemented in regular veterinary and technical staff visits, but could also be used by the farmers'. Several easy-to-record animal-based indicators of animal welfare could be analysed more frequently to increase early detection of problems. Implementation of such a routine-based monitoring system with easy-to-assess animal-based parameters and input measures can contribute to better animal health and welfare in pullets.

Abstract
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, widespread utilization of disinfectants has led to a tremendous increase in the generation of disinfection byproducts worldwide. Bromoacetic acid (BAA), one of the common disinfection byproducts in the environment, has triggered public concern because of its adverse effects on urinary system in mammals. Nevertheless, the BAA-induced nephrotoxicity and potential mechanism in birds still remains obscure. According to the detected content in the Taihu Lake Basin, the model of BAA exposure in chicken was established at doses of 0, 3, 300, 3000 μg/L for 4 weeks. Our results indicated that BAA exposure caused kidney swelling and structural disarrangement. BAA led to disorder in renal function (CRE, BUN, UA) and increased apoptosis (Bax, Bcl-2, caspase3). BAA suppressed the expression of mitochondrial biogenesis genes (PGC-1α, Nrf1, TFAM) and OXPHOS complex I genes (ND1, ND2, ND3, ND4, ND4L, ND5, ND6). Subsequently, BAA destroyed the expression of Nrf2 antioxidant reaction genes (Nrf2, Keap1, HO-1, NQO1, GCLM, GCLC). Furthermore, renal oxidative damage led to disorder in uric acid metabolism genes (Mrp2, Mrp4, Bcrp, OAT1, OAT2, OAT3) and exacerbated destruction in renal function. Overall, our study provided insights into the potential mechanism of BAA-induced nephrotoxicity, which were important for the clinical monitoring and prevention of BAA.

Abstract
Effective disinfection and disinsection are the keys to successful operation of modern poultry farms and the safety of poultry products. The cleaning and disinfection of poultry houses are important aspects of farm hygiene management. The correct execution of all steps of cleaning, disinfection, and disinsection procedures and the use of appropriate products are crucial for the prevention and control of zoonotic and animal diseases. In this study it was assumed that a water-based slow-release biocidal paint could be useful in controlling insect pests such as Alphitobius diaperinus and reducing microbiological contamination of air and litter in poultry houses and have a beneficial effect on microclimate in poultry houses. Therefore, the locations of A. diaperinus in the poultry houses, the microbiological contamination of air and litter, as well as the microclimatic conditions in the houses and the physicochemical parameters of the litter were evaluated. The results suggest that the tested biocidal paint could be an effective alternative to other insecticides and disinfectants. Additionally, the research is of a practical nature and may be very useful for poultry producers in controlling A. diaperinus populations and maintaining proper hygiene in poultry houses. Further research is needed.

Abstract
A disinfectant was created for aerosol disinfection of premises in the presence of poultry, which will help reduce microbial contamination of premises, increase survival, weight of poultry and economic efficiency of meat production in general. The preparation based on essential oils can be used for disinfection in the presence of poultry and at the same time exhibits a therapeutic and prophylactic effect on respiratory infections. This disinfectant has a colloidal solution of silver (Ag), benzalkonium chloride and essential oils of thyme, fir and eucalyptus. The preparation based on essential oils contains (per 100 g): benzalkonium chloride – 16.0 g; thyme oil – up to 2.0 g; eucalyptus oil – up to 2.0 g; fir oil – up to 2.0 g; colloidal solution of silver (Ag) – 20–30 mg; distilled water - up to 100 cm3. Aerosol sanitation of indoor air was carried out with 0.3% solution of preparation in the period before housing poultry and once a day from the 20th to the 35th day of growing broilers with aerosol cold mist generator Dyna-Fog Tornado (model 2897, construction type – ULV-electric spray gnerator, manufacturer – Curtis Dyna-Fog, Ltd., USA) at a dose of 50.0 cm3 per 1 m3 at an exposure of 60 minutes. The size of the aerosol particles is 20 μm. On days 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 28, 37, and 42, the chickens were weighed, and the blood was taken for examination. Blood was examined to study the number of red blood cells, hemoglobin content, the bactericidal activity of blood serum, phagocyte activity of leukocytes, lysozyme activity of blood serum. According to the results of the research, the technological modes of air disinfection of poultry premises in the presence of broiler chickens were substantiated during the use of preparation, which contains nanoparticles (NP) of silver, benzalkonium chloride and essential oils. The optimal mode of aerosol treatment of poultry houses using a 0.3% solution preparation based on essential oils is 50 mL/m3 of a room with a 60-minute exposure. The use of air disinfection in the presence of chickens during broiler rearing and one treatment per day from 20 to 35 days of the chickens’ growth reduced the microbial pollution of indoor air. Thus, the concentration of microbial cells in the room where the chickens were kept was 230.2 ± 15.6 thousand microbial cell/m3. Sixty minutes after disinfection, the concentration decreased to 1.4 ± 0.4 thousand microbial cell/m3. In addition, the bodyweight of chickens at 6 weeks increased by 449.4 ± 16.3 g (15.9%) compared with the controls. The method and mode of air treatment did not adversely affect the development of the internal organs of the poultry and their physiological state, which is confirmed by studies of the morphological parameters of the chicken blood. The data obtained indicate a positive effect of the developed methods and modes of aerosol air treatment with the preparation based on essential oils on the growth and development of broilers.

Abstract
Simple Summary Some of the equipment used in equine dentistry is difficult to clean and disinfect. Since it is vital to avoid the spread of infections in equine healthcare it is important to develop practical and easy-to-follow methods for cleaning and disinfecting dental equipment. The aim of this study was to investigate hygiene in equine dentistry. Dental equipment and the head support, where horses rest their head during dental care, were sampled for the amount of bacteria between each patient before and after dental care as well as after cleaning and/or disinfecting. The amount of bacteria was, in general, high on dental equipment and the head support after dental procedures. Bacteria were found in different amounts on most of the dental equipment after cleaning or disinfecting, which indicates a risk for spreading infections when using the equipment. For the head support, cleaning and/or disinfecting generally resulted in a reduced amount of bacteria, indicating a lowered risk for spreading infections. There is a great need for evidence-based guidelines on hygiene in equine dentistry to decrease the risk of transmitting infections between patients, facilities, and stables. Abstract Equine dentistry has developed immensely and human dental equipment, such as handpieces, are often used. Measures to avoid the spread of infectious microorganisms are important, but this is challenging since handpieces are difficult to decontaminate. Thus, it is necessary to develop effective IPC measures in equine dentistry. The aim of this study was to contribute to the evidence needed for future evidence-based guidelines on IPC by investigating hygiene in equine dentistry. Used handpieces and dummies (i.e., handpieces not used during dental procedure, reflecting environmental bacterial contamination) and the head support were sampled each day before the first patient, for each patient after treatment, and after decontamination. All equipment was sampled with 3M TM Swab Samplers and the head support additionally sampled with dip slides. After dental procedures, the detected bacterial load was often high on used handpieces, dummies, and the head support. After decontamination, handpieces did not meet the criteria for high-level disinfected equipment. In all but one case decontamination of the head support resulted in a lowered bacterial load. There is a great need for evidence-based guidelines on hygiene in equine dentistry, including IPC measures, to decrease the risk of spreading infectious microorganisms between patients, facilities, and stables.

Abstract
Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC beta-lactamase (AmpC) producing Enterobacteriaceae occur frequently in livestock animals and the subsequent stages of the meat production chain and are therefore considered a risk for human health. Strict biosecurity measures and optimal farm management should reduce or even prevent poultry flock colonization at farm level. This review summarizes and evaluates published information on the effectiveness of specific intervention measures and farm management factors aiming to reduce the occurrence and spread of ESBL/AmpC producing or commensal or pathogenic E. coli in broiler chicken farms. In this systematic literature review, a total of 643 publications were analyzed, and 14 studies with significant outcome about the effectiveness of specific measures against E. coli and ESBL/AmpC producing E. coli in broiler chicken farms were found. Different feed additives seem to have an impact on the occurrence of those microorganisms. The measures ‘cleaning and disinfection’ and ‘competitive exclusion’ showed strong effects in prevention in some studies. In summary, some intervention measures showed potential to protect against or eliminate ESBL/AmpC-producing, commensal or pathogenic E. coli at farm level. Due to the high variability in the outcome of the studies, more specific, detailed investigations are needed to assess the potential of the individual intervention measures.

Abstract
On a commercial broiler farm with substantial health problems, shown by a reported loss rate of approx. 10% and regular antibiotic use, samples were taken at different locations in 2 barns, with the aim of analyzing possible entry routes and persistence of pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria as well as revealing weak points in sanitation. Therefore, swab samples for biofilm and water samples from animal drinking water lines and the spray cooling system were taken twice immediately before restocking. In addition, swab samples from drain holes and air samples were collected. At restocking, hatchlings that died during transportation and chick paper were sampled. All samples were analyzed for the occurrence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, total coliform count, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, namely, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Acinetobacter baumannii, P. aeruginosa, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). No MRSA or VRE were detectable. In all samples from drinking water and sprinkler system pipes, P. aeruginosa was detectable; in most cases, antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa was also detected, with varying resistance profiles. Samples from the hatchlings and chick paper were contaminated with antibiotic-resistant Enterobacter spp., with resistance to piperacillin, fosfomycin, and the third-generation cephalosporins cefotaxime and ceftazidime. Therefore, the initial entry of antibiotic-resistant Enterobacteriaceae likely occurred via exposure at the hatchery, resulting in colonization of the chicks. Animals on the fattening farm were treated with colistin, amoxicillin, and lincomycin in the 3 production cycles before sampling. Owing to the frequent administration of several antibiotic classes during the fattening period via piped water in both barns, resistance of isolates from water pipes accumulated, showing additional resistance to chloramphenicol and frequently to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin. To prevent the development of secondary diseases caused by the facultative pathogen P. aeruginosa in chicks with a weak immune status, the hygiene management for drinking water lines and the spray cooling system was changed. These changes resulted in an improvement in water line sanitation, shown by the absence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and rare detection of P. aeruginosa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quaternary ammonium compound based disinfectants are commonly used in pig and poultry husbandry to maintain farm hygiene. However, studies have shown that subinhibitory concentrations of these disinfectants may increase antibiotic resistance. Investigation of antibiotic susceptibility is usually assessed via the microbroth dilution method, although this conventional culture-based technique only provides information on the bacteriostatic activity of an antimicrobial agent. Therefore, experiments were performed to investigate the effect of prior benzalkonium chloride (BKC) exposure on the viability of subsequent ciprofloxacin (CIP) treated Escherichia coli. RESULTS Following CIP treatment, bacterial cell counts were significantly higher after exposure to a subinhibitory BKC concentration than without BKC exposure. The flow cytometric results suggested a BKC-dependent onset of membrane damage and loss of membrane potential. CONCLUSION Our results indicate a lower bactericidal effect of CIP treatment on BKC-exposed E. coli isolates compared to unexposed E. coli isolates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disinfectants are frequently used in animal production to reduce or eliminate the load of infectious agents and parasites in buildings and equipment associated with the housing or transportation of animals. There are growing concerns that the use of disinfectants would select for resistance to antibiotics and disinfectants. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of repeated use of different disinfectants on the disinfectant and antibiotic susceptibility under practical conditions in a broiler and pig pilot farm. Therefore, the susceptibility of Escherichia coli (E. coli) to 14 antibiotics and 4 disinfectants was monitored over a one-year period. RESULTS High (20-50%) to very high (> 50%) resistance levels for ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and tetracycline were observed in both animal production types. Disinfectant susceptibility did not change over time and did not depend on the used disinfection product. Compared to in-use concentrations of formaldehyde, benzalkoniumchloride and a peracetic acid - hydrogen peroxide formulation, all E. coli strains remained susceptible indicating that the use of disinfectants did not select for disinfectant resistance. Moreover, no association could be found between the use of disinfectants and antibiotic resistance. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that repeated use of disinfectants in agricultural environments does not select for antibiotic resistance nor does it reduce disinfectant susceptibility.

Abstract
Optimal hygiene management is an essential part of maintaining a high standard of health in conventional pig production systems and for the successful interruption of infection chains. Currently, efficiency assessments on cleaning and disinfection are only performed by visual inspection or are neglected completely. The aim of this study was to evaluate the available methods for on farm monitoring of hygiene, identify critical points in pig pens and use the data obtained for training purposes. In addition to visual inspection by assessing the cleanliness, microbiological swab samples, i.e., aerobic total viable count (TVC), total coliform count, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and extended-spectrum β-lactamases-producing bacteria (ESBL), swab samples for ATP as well as protein residues and agar contact plates combined with 3 different culture media, were applied and ranked according to their suitability for livestock farming. Samples were collected on at least 15 critical points from one representative pen on 6 pig fattening farms with various hygiene management practices after cleaning and disinfection. After the first sampling, farmers were trained with their individual results, and sampling was repeated 6 mo after training. Nipple drinkers, feeding tubes (external and inner surface), and troughs (external and inner surface) showed the greatest bacterial loads (TVC: 4.5-6.7 log10 cfu cm-2) and values for ATP and protein residues; therefore, these surfaces could be identified as the most important critical points. Spearman rank correlations (P < 0.01) were found between the different assessment methods, especially for the TVC and ATP (r = 0.82, P < 0.001). For rapid assessment on farms, ATP tests represented an accurate and cost-efficient alternative to microbiological techniques. Training improved cleaning performance as indicated by a lower rating for visual inspection, TVC, ATP, MRSA, and ESBL in the second assessment. The monitoring of cleaning efficiency in pig pens followed by training of the staff constitutes a valuable strategy to limit the spread of infectious diseases and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Special attention should be paid to the sufficient hygiene of drinkers and feeders.

Abstract
This experiment evaluated the effect of Pro-Biotyk (Em-15) and EMFarma™ probiotics on body weight, feed intake and conversion, carcass traits, and microbial contamination in a poultry house. The probiotic preparations caused a nonsignificant increase in body weight (42 days), feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (1-42 days) and a nonsignificant decrease in chicken mortality from 4 weeks of rearing. Chickens exposed to probiotics did not differ significantly in preslaughter body weight, carcass weight, dressing percentage, and the content of carcass components. The carcasses from experimental chickens had a lower percentage of breast muscle, leg muscle, abdominal fat, and neck, as well as a higher percentage of skin with subcutaneous fat, wings, and remainder of carcasses compared with the carcasses from control birds. The probiotic preparations used in this study were highly effective as auxiliary disinfectants.

Abstract
Antibiotics are mandatory components of semen extenders for the control of bacterial contamination and growth. The increasing rate of worldwide resistance to conventional antibiotics in semen preservation media requires the development of new antimicrobial alternatives. This review provides an update on this topic and also highlights the improvement of hygiene in Artificial Insemination centers in order to prevent the development of bacterial resistance. Ideas are shared on future diagnostic tools for bacterial contamination in Artificial Breeding. Finally, new methods to remove or reduce bacteria in semen will be discussed.

Abstract
Salmonellosis represents an important public health concern. Several authors point out the inefficiency of the cleaning and disinfection protocols to remove the bacteria from the field. For this reason, innovative techniques, as bacteriophages, could be implemented to control the bacteria. The main objectives of this study were to assess the effect of bacteriophages against Salmonella Infantis and Salmonella Enteritidis on farm surfaces, and to evaluate bacteriophage procedure application as sanitiser against Salmonella in field conditions. Thus, most prevalent serovars in poultry production were selected (Salmonella Infantis and Salmonella Enteritidis) to contaminate farm facilities. Then, two specific bacteriophages isolated from poultry faeces were applied against them. Results showed Salmonella Infantis and Salmonella Enteritidis decreased of 4.55 log10CFU/mL and 3.85 log10CFU/mL, respectively; the maximum reduction in Salmonella was the 5th day, after 108 PFU/mL and 103 PFU/mL bacteriophage application. These results highlight bacteriophages as a promising tool together with cleaning and disinfection.

Abstract
Biosecurity assessment in poultry farms is important for disease prevention and control. When specific biosecurity measures are assessed, they become more useful if they are quantified. While there are qualitative means to assess biosecurity, specific improvements can be implemented easily when compliance to biosecurity measures are quantified. To quantify biosecurity measures in 124 layer farms in Central Luzon, a survey was carried out using a modified Biocheck.UGent biosecurity scoring system. The study revealed that external and internal biosecurity scores among layer farms in Central Luzon were widely spread out suggesting that compliance to various biosecurity measures differed from farm to farm. This further suggests that layer farms need to improve their biosecurity practices. The overall biosecurity score of layer farms in the region is 65.9 % while the total regional scores for external and internal biosecurity are 63.3 % and 71.9 %, respectively. Bulacan had the highest overall biosecurity across provinces which was followed by Bataan. The two highest mean external biosecurity scores were those of the subcategories, supply of materials (mean = 87.1) and purchase of pullets (mean = 83.7) while the lowest was that of the category, transport of animals (mean = 50.6). In the internal biosecurity category, materials and measures between compartments had the highest mean score. Low to negligible correlations between external and internal biosecurity were seen among layer farms except for the province of Tarlac. This suggests that a farm with low external biosecurity score also had low internal biosecurity score while high external biosecurity score was equated to high internal biosecurity score. Analysis also showed that large commercials farms had biosecurity ratings that were 6.84 higher compared to small commercial farms. Results of this study may be beneficial for farmers to make necessary improvement to increase level of compliance to biosecurity measures. Policies to impose, implement and monitor compliance may also be instituted.

Abstract
Antibiotic agents such as gentamicin represent essential components of semen extenders in order to reduce bacterial contamination. But antibiotic resistance increases and AI centers start utilizing antibiotic agents which are more potent. Therefore, a shift to preventing bacterial contamination has to take place. In this study, we could demonstrate that hygiene is a tool capable of reducing bacterial load. In order to analyze 1434 extended semen samples and nine specially established hygienic critical control points (HCCPs, n = 828), 92 quality control audits have been carried out in a time period from 2012 until 2019 in 28 European AI centers. The results show the process of introducing a basic hygienic standard in audit 1 (2012/2013) and 2 (2014/2015) and the resulting achievements by means of improved hygienic conditions in audit 3 (2016/2017) and 4 (2018/2019). Within the scope of audit 1, 19% of the semen samples were contaminated with bacteria (cutoff ≥100 colony-forming units/mL). Audit 2 showed a bacterial load of 13.6% whereas during audit 3 and 4 very low bacterial contamination rates were recorded (4.5 and 5.5%, respectively). In the same manner, analysis of hygiene at different CCPs during semen production showed a decrease in all average HCCP-scores (score 1-6) comparing audit 4 to 1. By regression analysis we could show a significant audit-dependent association of the bacterial contamination in semen samples and hygiene of HCCPs. Furthermore, analysis of the odds ratio (OR) reveals that the bacterial contamination of certain HCCPs poses an increased risk of receiving bacterially contaminated semen samples (filling machine: OR = 3.02, P = 0.06; extender: OR = 8.97, P < 0.001; inner face of dilution tank lids: OR = 3.14, P = 0.09). Around 60% of the variance of the bacterial contamination in semen samples could be explained by hygienic conditions at different control points and their interaction with audit period and AI center. Antimicrobial agents are essential to protect human and animal health but excessive or inappropriate use can lead to the emergence of resistant bacteria. As shown in our study, hygiene management can significantly reduce bacterial contamination and is therefore capable of preventing antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
As part of the development of a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model of third-generation cephalosporins (3GC)-resistant Salmonella Heidelberg, a compartmental (SEIR) model for S. Heidelberg transmission within a typical Canadian commercial broiler chicken flock was developed. The model was constructed to estimate the within-flock prevalence and the bacterial concentration in the barn environment at pre-harvest, and to assess the effect of selected control measures. The baseline scenario predicted an average within-flock prevalence of 23.5 % (95 % tolerance interval: 15.7-31.4) and an average bacterial concentration of 3.579 (0-4.294) log CFU/g of feces in the barn environment at pre-harvest (on the day the flock is sent to slaughter). Heidelberg into the barn was already uncommon in the baseline scenario, vaccination of broiler parent flocks appeared to have a negligible effect, while vaccination of broiler chicken flocks substantially reduced the bacterial concentration at pre-harvest. Cleaning and disinfection between batches markedly reduced the within-flock prevalence at pre-harvest, but the effect on bacterial concentration was limited outside of the beginning of the production period. Extending downtime between batches by 7 days had little effect on within-flock prevalence or bacterial concentration of S. Heidelberg when compared to the baseline scenario. This study provides a basis to describe S. Heidelberg dynamics within a broiler chicken flock and to predict the within-flock prevalence and bacterial concentration at pre-harvest, and includes a description of the limitations and data gaps. The results of these analyses and associated uncertainties are critical information for populating QMRA models of the downstream impacts on public health from on-farm and other food-chain practices. Specifically, the study findings will be integrated into a broader farm-to-fork QMRA model to support the risk-based control of S. Heidelberg resistant to 3GC in broiler chicken in Canada.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Farm disinfectants are widely used in primary production, but questions have been raised if their use can select for antimicrobial resistance. The present study examined the use of disinfectants in poultry and pig husbandry and its contribution to the antibiotic and disinfectant susceptibility of Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains obtained after cleaning and disinfection. On those field isolates antibiotic susceptibility was monitored and susceptibility to commonly used active components of farm disinfectants (i.e. glutaraldehyde, benzalkoniumchloride, formaldehyde, and a formulation of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide) was tested. RESULTS This study showed a high resistance prevalence (> 50%) for ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and tetracycline for both production animal categories, while for ciprofloxacin only a high resistance prevalence was found in broiler houses. Disinfectant susceptibility results were homogenously distributed within a very small concentration range. Furthermore, all E. coli strains were susceptible to in-use concentrations of formaldehyde, benzalkoniumchloride and a formulation of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, indicating that the practical use of disinfectants did not select for disinfectant resistance. Moreover, the results showed no indications for the selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria through the use of disinfectants in agricultural environments. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that the proper use of disinfectants in agricultural environments does not promote antibiotic resistance nor reduce E. coli disinfectant susceptibility.

Abstract
Resistance to antibiotics threatens to become a worldwide health problem. An important attributing phenomenon in this context is that pathogens can acquire antibiotic resistance genes through conjugative transfer of plasmids. To prevent bacterial infections in agricultural settings, the use of veterinary hygiene products, such as disinfectants, has gained popularity and questions have been raised about their contribution to such spreading of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of subinhibitory concentrations of benzalkoniumchloride (BKC), a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), on the conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. Five Escherichia coli field strains originating from broiler chickens and with known transferable plasmid-mediated ciprofloxacin resistance were exposed to subinhibitory BKC concentrations: 1/3, 1/10 and 1/30 of the minimum bactericidal concentration. Antibiotic resistance transfer was assessed by liquid mating for 4 h at 25°C using E. coli K12 MG1655 as recipient strain. The transfer ratio was calculated as the number of transconjugants divided by the number of recipients. Without exposure to BKC, the strains showed a ciprofloxacin resistance transfer ratio ranging from 10-4 to 10-7. No significant effect of exposure to subinhibitory concentrations of BKC was observed on this transfer ratio.

Abstract
To better understand the effect of different disinfectants on the types and quantities of microorganisms in a broiler chicken house, five different types of disinfectants, including ozone, available chlorine, quaternary ammonium salt, glutaraldehyde, and mixed disinfectant, were used. The broiler house microbial communities were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing combined with air sampling. The results showed that the concentrations of airborne aerobic bacteria in the empty broiler houses after application of different disinfectants were significantly reduced compared to a house untreated with disinfectant (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), and the number of inhalable particles of airborne aerobic bacteria sharply decreased after disinfection. Of the five disinfectants, the mixed disinfectant had the best disinfection efficacy on the total microbial communities (P < 0.05). A total of 508,143 high-quality sequences were obtained by high-throughput sequencing, which identified 1995 operational taxonomic units. In total, 42 phyla and 312 genera were identified. The structures of airborne microbial communities in the broiler houses after the different disinfectants were applied differed. In the house treated with the mixed disinfectant, the microbial communities containing opportunistic pathogens, such as Escherichia-Shigella, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas, had the lowest abundance, with a significant decrease compared to the house untreated with disinfectant. The alpha diversity index showed low diversity of the microbial communities in the house treated with mixed disinfectant. In contrast to the other four disinfectants, only a small amount of bacteria was detected in the air sample in the house treated with the mixed disinfectant; specifically, only four phyla were found (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes). The mixed disinfectant produced a positive effect on disinfection for four phyla; however, it didn’t thoroughly eliminate them. At genus level, Bacillus, Arenimonas, and Shinella could not be detected in the house treated with the mixed disinfectant, but were detected in houses treated with other disinfectants. The high-throughput sequencing results revealed that the combination of multiple disinfectants exhibited a good disinfection efficacy and that this technique could disinfect the air of broiler houses. These results will help guide the development of a reasonable program for broiler house disinfection.
