Association Between Dietary Fiber Intake and Heart Failure Among Adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009–2018

The Association Between Blood Mercury and Lipid Biomarkers in US Hypertensive Adults

Mercury (Hg) is detrimental to human health, but its impact on lipid biomarkers remains a subject of controversy. This study sought to delineate a clear link between blood Hg and lipid biomarkers correlated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), including total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), in hypertensive adults in the USA.

METHODS

This cross-sectional research gathered data from a total of 4415 participants sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The Holm-Bonferroni stepdown procedure was utilized to control the type I error rate in multiple comparisons. We employed multivariable linear regression models to assess the correlation between blood Hg and lipid biomarkers. Subsequently, subgroup analyses were conducted, categorized by both gender and race. Additionally, we used smooth curve fittings and generalized additive models to confirm the presence of non-linear relationships. When non-linearity was detected, we applied a recursive algorithm to calculate the inflection points. Finally, we established a weighted two-piecewise linear regression model to illustrate the associations on either side of the inflection point.

RESULTS

In our multivariable linear regression models, clear associations emerged. Specifically, positive correlations were observed between blood mercury and TC (β = 0.025; 95% CI 0.009 to 0.041; corrected P = 0.011), LDL-C (β = 0.022; 95% CI 0.007 to 0.036; corrected P = 0.012), and HDL-C (β = 0.007; 95% CI 0.001 to 0.013; corrected P = 0.058). However, there was no significant correlation with TG (β =  - 0.007; 95% CI - 0.018 to 0.004; corrected P = 0.526). Notably, it has been demonstrated that distinct inverted U-shaped and U-shaped curves exist when stratified by gender in our analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

Blood Hg exhibited a positive correlation with TC, LDL-C, and HDL-C in hypertensive adults in the USA. Nonetheless, no significant association was observed with TG.

Gut microbiota connects the brain and the heart: potential mechanisms and clinical implications

Nowadays, high morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and high comorbidity rate of neuropsychiatric disorders contribute to global burden of health and economics. Consequently, a discipline concerning abnormal connections between the brain and the heart and the resulting disease states, known as psychocardiology, has garnered interest among researchers. However, identifying a common pathway that physicians can modulate remains a challenge. Gut microbiota, a constituent part of the human intestinal ecosystem, is likely involved in mutual mechanism CVDs and neuropsychiatric disorder share, which could be a potential target of interventions in psychocardiology. This review aimed to discuss complex interactions from the perspectives of microbial and intestinal dysfunction, behavioral factors, and pathophysiological changes and to present possible approaches to regulating gut microbiota, both of which are future directions in psychocardiology.

Association between dietary carbohydrate to fiber ratio and metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease in adults: evidence from the NHANES 2017-2020

This study aimed to explore the association of carbohydrate to fiber ratio (CFR) with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in adults. In this study, data from the 2 cycles (2017-2018 and 2019-2020) of the NHANES were used. Univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression analyses were applied to evaluate the association between CFR and MAFLD. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence levels (CIs) were estimated. Subgroup analysis was further performed in terms of gender, age and comorbidity (diabetes, hypertension). A total of 3180 individuals were included, with 1408 (44.28%) in the non-MAFLD group and 1772 (55.72%) in the MAFLD group. After adjusting different variables, a dietary fiber intake of 11.15-18.40 g was associated with significantly lower odds of MAFLD compared with a fiber intake < 11.15 g (OR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.54-0.93). In contrast to a dietary CFR < 12.58, a CFR > 19.91 was associated with significantly higher odds of MAFLD (OR = 1.57, 95% CI 1.09-2.27). Compared with females with a dietary CFR < 12.58, those with a CFR > 19.91 had significantly increased odds of MAFLD (OR = 1.87, 95% CI 1.29-2.73). Among individuals aged < 65 years, a dietary CFR > 19.91 was associated with higher odds of MAFLD than a dietary CFR < 12.58 (OR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.02-2.25). For participants without diabetes (OR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.26-2.54) or hypertension (OR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.02-3.65), a dietary CFR > 19.91 was associated with elevated odds of MAFLD than a CFR < 12.58. In summary, a higher CFR was associated with significantly greater odds of MAFLD, indicating the negative association between carbohydrate quality and MAFLD. The research would be conducive to metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease treatment.
