Abstract
The coffee berry borer (CBB) is the most destructive pest of coffee worldwide, with damages exceeding $500 M a year and affecting the livelihood of 25 million farmers. Coffee fruit rot (CFR) is described as an anthracnose disease; it can cause up to 80% loss of the crop on susceptible cultivars when conditions favor it. These two serious threats to coffee production have been studied separately, but a link between them was not shown until recently. Several recent studies show that CBB damage is associated with a higher incidence of fruit rot; CBBs carry Colletotrichum and Fusarium fungi, also found in rotted fruits, and can transmit disease to coffee fruits as they bore into them. Previous studies on the relationship between CBB and Fusarium did not take into account that Fusarium is involved in coffee fruit rot, so these recent findings shed new light on the relationship. Here we discuss this relationship and its implications, both ecological and practical.

Abstract
Insect gut symbiotic microbiota play a crucial role in the nutritional, physiological, and behavioral aspects of their hosts, providing valuable insights for investigating the co-evolution of insects and plants. Sophora alopecuroides L. serves as an important windbreak plant, while Etiella zinckenella is a major pest that infests its seeds. However, the structure of the gut microbiota community in E. zinckenella remains poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the gut microbiota of E. zinckenella across different developmental stages-larvae (1st-5th instars), pupae, and adults-infesting S. alopecuroides using 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed that the dominant phyla throughout the development of E. zinckenella were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota, although the dominant genera varied significantly across stages. Diversity analysis of gut microbiota at different developmental stages indicated that microbial diversity was significantly higher in the larval stage compared to the pupal and adult stages. Functional predictions further highlighted the richness of metabolic pathways within the gut microbiota of E. zinckenella. Notably, carbohydrate metabolism functions were significantly more abundant during the larval stage, while lipid metabolism functions were substantially lower. Our findings demonstrate dynamic changes in the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota across the developmental stages of E. zinckenella, underscoring the critical roles of these bacteria during specific stages of the insect's life cycle. This study lays the groundwork for future strategies aimed at controlling E. zinckenella through modulation of its gut microbiota, offering significant theoretical implications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The microbial biodiversity and the role of microorganisms in the fermentation of washed coffee in Colombia were investigated using the Bourbon and Castillo coffee varieties. DNA sequencing was used to evaluate the soil microbial biota and their contribution to fermentation. The potential benefits of these microorganisms were analyzed, including increased productivity and the need to understand the rhizospheric bacterial species to optimize these benefits. METHODS This study used coffee beans for DNA extraction and 16 S rRNA sequencing. The beans were pulped, samples were stored at 4ºC, and the fermentation process was at 19.5ºC and 24ºC. The fermented mucilage and root-soil samples were collected in duplicate at 0, 12, and 24 h. DNA was extracted from the samples at a concentration of 20 ng/µl per sample, and the data obtained were analyzed using the Mothur platform. RESULTS The study demonstrates that the coffee rhizosphere is a diverse ecosystem composed primarily of microorganisms that cannot be cultured in the laboratory. This suggests that the microbial community may vary depending on the coffee variety and play an essential role in fermentation and overall coffee quality. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights the importance of understanding and optimizing the microbial diversity in coffee production, which could have implications for the sustainability and success of coffee production. DNA sequencing techniques can help characterize the structure of the soil microbial biota and evaluate its contribution to coffee fermentation. Finally, further research is needed to fully understand the biodiversity of coffee rhizospheric bacteria and their role.

Abstract
A country’s biodiversity is a key resource for the development of a sustainable bioeconomy. However, often the most biodiverse countries on the planet hardly profit from their biological diversity. On the contrary, occasionally components of that biodiversity become a threat to society and its food sustainability. That is the case of the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis. Here, the analysis of the bacteria associated with the digestive tract of D. saccharalis reveals a rich and diverse microbiota. Two types of diets were analyzed under laboratory conditions. The metataxonomic analysis revealed a number of taxa common to most of the larval pools analyzed with relative abundances exceeding 5%, and five families of bacteria which have also been reported in the gut of another Lepidoptera. A large fraction of microorganisms detected by amplicon sequencing were considered to be rare and difficult to cultivate. However, among the cultivable microorganisms, 12 strains with relevant biotechnological features were identified. The strain that showed the highest cellulolytic activity (GCEP-101) was genome sequenced. The analysis of the GCEP-101 complete genome revealed that the values of 16S rRNA identity, the Average Nucleotide Identity, and the digital DNA–DNA hybridization place the strain as a candidate for a new species within the genus Pseudomonas. Moreover, the genome annotation of the putative new species evidenced the presence of genes associated with cellulose degradation, revealing the hidden potential of the pest as a reservoir of biotechnologically relevant microorganisms.

Abstract
Insect sequential development evolves from a simple molt towards complete metamorphosis. Like any multicellular host, insects interact with a complex microbiota. In this review, factors driving the microbiota dynamics were pointed out along their development. Special focus was put on tissue renewal, shift in insect ecology, and microbial interactions. Conversely, how the microbiota modulates its host development through nutrient acquisition, hormonal control, and cellular or tissue differentiation was exemplified. Such modifications might have long-term carry-over effects on insect physiology. Finally, remarkable microbe-driven control of insect behaviors along their life cycle was highlighted. Increasing knowledge of those interactions might offer new insights on how insects respond to their environment as well as perspectives on pest- or vector-control strategies.

Abstract
AbstractPlant toxins constitute an effective defense against herbivorous animals. However, many herbivores have evolved adaptations to cope with dietary toxins through detoxification, excretion, sequestration, target site insensitivity and/or via behavioral avoidance. While these adaptations are often directly encoded in herbivore genomes, evidence is accumulating that microbial symbionts can reduce the dose of plant toxins by metabolizing or sequestering them prior to absorption by the herbivore. Here, we describe a few well-studied examples to assess such symbiont-mediated detoxification and showcase different approaches that have been used for their analyses. These include: (i) a host phenotypic route in which the symbiotic association is manipulated to reveal host fitness costs upon toxin exposure in the presence/absence of detoxifying symbionts, including function restoration after symbiont re-infection, (ii) a molecular microbiological approach that focuses on the identification and characterization of microbial genes involved in plant toxin metabolism, and (iii) an analytical chemical route that aims to characterize the conversion of the toxin to less harmful metabolites in vivo and link conversion to the activities of a detoxifying symbiont. The advantages and challenges of each approach are discussed, and it is argued that a multi-pronged strategy combining phenotypic, molecular, and chemical evidence is needed to unambiguously demonstrate microbial contributions to plant toxin reduction and the importance of these processes for host fitness. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, we aim to provide a guideline to researchers interested in symbiont-mediated detoxification and hope to encourage future studies that contribute to a more comprehensive and mechanistic understanding of detoxification in herbivores and their symbionts.

Abstract
Insect pests cause significant agricultural and economic losses to crops worldwide due to their destructive activities. Pesticides are designed to be poisonous and are intentionally released into the environment to combat the menace caused by these noxious pests. To survive, these insects can resist toxic substances introduced by humans in the form of pesticides. According to recent findings, microbes that live in insect as symbionts have recently been found to protect their hosts against toxins. Symbioses that have been formed are between the pests and various microbes, a defensive mechanism against pathogens and pesticides. Insects' guts provide unique conditions for microbial colonization, and resident bacteria can deliver numerous benefits to their hosts. Insects vary significantly in their reliance on gut microbes for basic functions. Insect digestive tracts are very different in shape and chemical properties, which have a big impact on the structure and composition of the microbial community. Insect gut microbiota has been found to contribute to feeding, parasite and pathogen protection, immune response modulation, and pesticide breakdown. The current review will examine the roles of gut microbiota in pesticide detoxification and the mechanisms behind the development of resistance in insects to various pesticides. To better understand the detoxifying microbiota in agriculturally significant pest insects, we provided comprehensive information regarding the role of gut microbiota in the detoxification of pesticides.
