Biogeographic patterns of potential pathogenic bacteria in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River as well as its two adjoining lakes, China

Deciphering assembly processes, network complexity and stability of potential pathogenic communities in two anthropogenic coastal regions of a highly urbanized estuary

The existence of potential pathogens may lead to severe water pollution, disease transmission, and the risk of infectious diseases, posing threats to the stability of aquatic ecosystems and human health. In-depth research on the dynamic of potential pathogenic communities is of significant importance, it can provide crucial support for assessing the health status of aquatic ecosystems, maintaining ecological balance, promoting sustainable economic development, and safeguarding human health. Nevertheless, the current understanding of the distribution and geographic patterns of potential pathogens in coastal ecosystems remains rather limited. Here, we investigated the diversity, assembly, and co-occurrence network of potential pathogenic communities in two anthropogenic coastal regions, i.e., the eight mouths (EPR) and nearshore region (NSE), of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and a total of 11 potential pathogenic types were detected. The composition and diversity of potential pathogenic communities exhibited noteworthy distinctions between the EPR and NSE, with 6 shared potential pathogenic families. Additionally, in the NSE, a significant pattern of geographic decay was observed, whereas in the EPR, the pattern of geographic decay was not significant. Based on the Stegen null model, it was noted that undominant processes (53.36%/69.24%) and heterogeneous selection (27.35%/25.19%) dominated the assembly of potential pathogenic communities in EPR and NSE. Co-occurrence network analysis showed higher number of nodes, a lower average path length and graph diameter, as well as higher level of negative co-occurrences and modularity in EPR than those in NSE, indicating more complex and stable correlations between potential pathogens in EPR. These findings lay the groundwork for the effective management of potential pathogens, offering essential information for ecosystem conservation and public health considerations in the anthropogenic coastal regions.

Response of the microbial community structure to the environmental factors during the extreme flood season in Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China

Background

Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China, and there are several studies on the composition and diversity of bacteria in Poyang Lake, while few quantitative studies were carried out on the response of the bacterial community to environmental factors during the extreme flood season in Poyang Lake.

Methods

The connected-lake heterogeneity of bacterial community composition (BCC) was investigated in Poyang Lake during the flood season in 2020. Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology was used in this study.

Results

The bacterial community structure in the water was different from that in the sediment of Poyang Lake during extreme flood seasons. The bacterial diversity in water was much lower than that in sediment. In the water column, the dominant phyla were Actinobacteriota, while the composition of bacteria in sediment was more complex than that in water, and the dominant phyla in sediment were Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota. The bacterial diversity in the water of Poyang Lake showed seasonal dynamics, while no seasonal variation of bacterial communities in sediment was observed. The bacterial community structure in the sediment from the two bays and channel areas of Poyang Lake can be distinguished from each other. The microbial diversity in sediment gradually increased from the Sancha Bay to the Zhouxi Bay and then to the channel, but the total nitrogen (TN) concentration in sediment (STN) and the total phosphorus (TP) concentration in sediment (STP) showed opposite trends. This might be due to the anthropogenic disturbances from the extreme flood. The bacterial community structure in, water column was significantly correlated with WT, NH4-N, STP, SOM, Chl a, DO, TP, and Eh, while the bacterial community structure in sediment was significantly correlated with SOM and STP.

Conclusion

The bacterial community structure in water was greatly different from that in sediment in Poyang Lake during extreme flood seasons. The bacterial community structure in the water column was not only sensitive to the geochemical characteristics of the water but also affected by some nutrient concentrations in the sediment. During the wet seasons, bacterial diversity was only affected by SOM and STP.

Bacterioplankton diversity and potential health risks in volcanic lakes: A study from Arxan Geopark, China

Bacterioplankton play a vital role in maintaining the functions and services of lake ecosystems. Understanding the diversity and distribution patterns of bacterioplankton, particularly the presence of potential pathogenic bacterial communities, is crucial for safeguarding human health. In this study, we employed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to investigate the diversity and geographic patterns of bacterioplankton communities, as well as potential pathogens, in eight volcanic lakes located in the Arxan UNESCO Global Geopark (in the Greater Khingan Mountains of China). Our results revealed that the bacterial communities primarily comprised Bacteroidota (45.3%), Proteobacteria (33.1%), and Actinobacteria (9.0%) at the phylum level. At the genus level, prominent taxa included Flavobacterium (31.5%), Acinetobacter (11.0%), Chryseobacterium (7.9%), and CL500-29 marine group (5.6%). Among the bacterioplankton, we identified 34 pathogen genera (165 amplicon sequence variants [ASVs]), with Acinetobacter (59.8%), Rahnella (18.3%), Brevundimonas (9.6%), and Pseudomonas (5.8%) being the most dominant. Our findings demonstrated distinct biogeographic patterns in the bacterial communities at the local scale, driven by a combination of dispersal limitation and environmental factors influenced by human activities. Notably, approximately 15.3% of the bacterioplankton reads in the Arxan lakes were identified as potential pathogens, underscoring the potential risks to public health in these popular tourist destinations. This study provides the first comprehensive insight into the diversity of bacterioplankton in mountain lake ecosystems affected by high tourist activity, laying the groundwork for effective control measures against bacterial pathogens.
