Abstract
Previous studies have found working memory (WM) advantages of the pathological smartphone use (PSU) group, but most of which were emphasized in the network-related domain. Whether the advantages can transfer to other domains has yet to be confirmed. In particular, exploring from a brain mechanism perspective is necessary. Using the classical N-back paradigm, this study selected network-related words and neutral words as materials combined with fNIRS to probe the verbal WM characteristics of the PSU group. The results showed that β in channel 3, channel 4, and channel 5 were significantly lower in the PSU group than those in the control group The analysis of the region of interest revealed that the PSU group showed significantly lower β in the l-DLPFC and frontopolar. Granger Causality results showed that functional connectivity between frontopolar and R-DLPFC for the PSU group was significantly higher than for the control group in the network word condition. These results demonstrate that the PSU group has an advantage in WM, transferring from the network-related stimulus to the neutral stimulus. The advantages of network stimulus were related to bidirectional connectivity between frontopolar and R-DLPFC. Also, the l-DLPFC and frontopolar are associated with the cross-material consistency of WM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of smartphones and other digital devices (such as tablets and smartwatches) is important for the aging population to enhance and optimize communications with caregivers, families, friends, and providers. It also provides a platform for app-based activities to promote mental, physical, spiritual, and social well-being and virtual social connectedness. We, therefore, examined types of digital devices and categories of smartphone functions used by caregivers and care recipients in comparison to those without any caregiving roles. METHOD The project team has developed a smartphone app based on Buddhist meditative practice principles for the enhancement of the physical, mental, cognitive, and emotional well-being of older adults and their caregivers and tested it in Galveston, Houston, and Dallas, TX. The study comprised a convenient sample of older adults, including members or volunteers of the International Buddhist Progress Society-Dallas (IBPS Dallas) and the University of Texas Medical Branch Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (UTMB OLLI). The survey focused on people who were 55 years and older (n = 219), with 177 valid responses (~80.8%) meeting the study's inclusion criteria. The survey collected data on (1) caregiving role, (2) demographic characteristics and caregiving concerns, and (3) types of devices, functions, and utilization. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression were used to describe and compare patterns of smartphone function/use by the different groups, i.e., caregivers, care recipients, and neither. RESULTS All of our survey respondents were 55 years and older, and among them, 17.5% were caregivers, 9.1% were care recipients, and 73.4% did not have any role. The majority of the caregivers were females (80.6%), and the average age of their care recipients was 66 years. The care recipients in our sample reported that the average age of their caregiver is only 55 years. Around three-fourths of caregivers reported that they have an app related to health or they are willing to use a health-related app, 32% of them use smart home appliances, whereas only 16% of people who are neither caregivers nor care recipients use such apps. Approximately 42% of caregivers reported taking care of their parents or parents-in-law, and their major concerns are about maintaining their income, scheduling tasks, and updating their knowledge as needed to better care for their loved ones. People use texting or messaging the most. However, the second and third highest utilization are different. The "neither" group significantly spends more time checking email and watching TV; the care recipients spend more time reading and watching TV (sedentary activities); the caregiver group spends more time on phone calls and listening to music. CONCLUSIONS Findings of different patterns of digital device use exist between caregivers, care recipients, and the "neither" group, with 75% of caregivers using a digital device app related to health or reporting willingness to use a health-related app developed from our study. Our findings of their caregiving experiences might also inform the design of different intervention programs aimed at promoting mental, physical, and social well-being, improving quality of life while reducing disease/disability burden for older adults, and preventing burnout among caregivers.

Abstract
Can digital technologies provide a passive unobtrusive means to observe and study cognition outside of the laboratory? Previously, cognitive assessments and monitoring were conducted in a laboratory or clinical setting, allowing for a cross-sectional glimpse of cognitive states. In the last decade, researchers have been utilizing technological advances and devices to explore ways of assessing cognition in the real world. We propose that the virtual keyboard of smartphones, an increasingly ubiquitous digital device, can provide the ideal conduit for passive data collection to study cognition. Passive data collection occurs without the active engagement of a participant and allows for near-continuous, objective data collection. Most importantly, this data collection can occur in the real world, capturing authentic datapoints. This method of data collection and its analyses provide a more comprehensive and potentially more suitable insight into cognitive states, as intra-individual cognitive fluctuations over time have shown to be an early manifestation of cognitive decline. We review different ways passive data, centered around keystroke dynamics, collected from smartphones, have been used to assess and evaluate cognition. We also discuss gaps in the literature where future directions of utilizing passive data can continue to provide inferences into cognition and elaborate on the importance of digital data privacy and consent.

Abstract
Aim Few previous studies have investigated the impact of multiple types of electronic devices on health status, and the moderating effects of gender, age, and BMI. Our aim is to examine the relationships between the use of four types of electronics and three health status indicators in a middle-aged and elderly population, and how these relationships varied by gender, age, and BMI. Subject and methods Using data from 376,806 participants aged 40-69 years in the UK Biobank, we conducted a multivariate linear regression to estimate the association between electronic device use and health status. Electronics use was categorized as TV watching, computer use, computer gaming, and mobile phone use, and health status included self-rated health (SRH), multisite chronic pain (MCP), and total physical activity (TPA). Interaction terms were utilized to assess whether the above associations were modified by BMI, gender, and age. Further stratified analysis was performed to explore the role of gender, age, and BMI. Results Higher levels of TV watching (BSRH = 0.056, BMCP = 0.044, BTPA= -1.795), computer use (BSRH = 0.007, BTPA= -3.469), and computer gaming (BSRH = 0.055, BMCP = 0.058, BTPA= -6.076) were consistently associated with poorer health status (all P < 0.05). Contrastingly, earlier exposure to mobile phones (BSRH = -0.048, BTPA= 0.933, BMCP = 0.056) was inconsistent with health (all P < 0.05). Additionally, BMI (Bcomputer use-SRH= 0.0026, Bphone-SRH= 0.0049, BTV-MCP= 0.0031, and BTV-TPA= -0.0584) exacerbated the negative effects of electronics use, and male (Bphone-SRH = -0.0414, Bphone-MCP = -0.0537, Bphone-TPA= 2.8873) were healthier with earlier exposure to mobile phones (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Our findings suggest that the adverse health effects associated with watching TV, computer use, and computer gaming were consistent and were moderated by BMI, gender, and age, which advances a comprehensive understanding of the association between multiple types of electronic devices and health status, and provides new perspectives for future research. Effectiveness of a Serious Game Design and Game Mechanic Factors for Attention and Executive Function Improvement in the Elderly: A Pretest-Posttest Study. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Attention allows us to focus and process information from our environment, and executive function enables us to plan, work, and manage our daily lives. As individuals become older, both of these cognitive abilities decline. It is essential for the elderly to perform more cognitive exercises. Previous studies have shown that arithmetic calculations require attention span and that playing video games requires executive function. Therefore, we developed a serious game involving mental arithmetic calculations specifically for improving attention span and executive functions. Our objective was to analyze the effectiveness of the game and the efficacy of the game’s mechanic factors affecting attention span and executive function in the elderly. Forty elderly volunteers who are over 60 years of age were invited to join an eight-week cognitive training program through an elderly social welfare center. Four assessment tests were used in pre-test and post-test before and after the training period. D-CAT and SAT are used for screening attention span; TMT-A and TMT-B are used for screening executive function. They were instructed to play the game for at least 15 min per day, 5 days per week, for a total of 8 weeks. There were three independent variables (difficulty, pressure, and competition) with two parameters that could be selected. A paired-sample t-test showed the effective results by comparing the pre-test scores and post-test scores of the cognitive training. There were significant improvements in attention span and executive functions. The mixed repeated-measure ANOVA and MANCOVA results showed that two game mechanic factors (difficulty and pressure) had a significant effect and an interaction effect, but the other factor (competition) had a non-significant effect. In conclusion, the game showed a significant enhancement in both attention span and executive functions after training, and the difficulty factor and the pressure factor were shown to have an effect, but the competition factor was shown to have no effect.

Abstract
Executive functions include functions such as planning, working memory, inhibition, mental flexibility, and action monitoring and initiation, and are essential to carry out an independent everyday life. Individuals suffering from brain injury, such as a stroke, very commonly experience executive deficits that reduce the capacity to regain functional independence. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing tablet computer-based cognitive training programs for stroke patients and healthy aging adults since such programs can be included in non-supervised environments. In this respect, we described and evaluated the usability of a novel tablet application (app) for executive function training, developed in the context of the MEMORI-net project, a cross-border Italy-Slovenia program for the rehabilitation of stroke patients. We conducted a pilot study with a non-clinical sample of 16 participants to obtain information about the usability of the sFEra APP. Our descriptive analyses suggest that most users were satisfied with the overall experience and the app was highly usable, and instructions were clear, even with little previous experience with tablet applications. Acceptability and effectiveness will need to be evaluated in a clinical randomized controlled study.

Abstract
Previous studies have examined how smartphones influence the life satisfaction of the elderly, but the existence of conflicting conclusions suggests the existence of a “black box”. In this study, using a survey from 941 elders, we examine whether smartphone use can improve life satisfaction of the elders by inducing emotional affordance offered by social networking Apps and functional affordance offered by healthcare system Apps. It is found that both emotional affordance and functional affordance acted as intermediating variables between the use of smartphone and elders' life satisfaction. In addition, it is founded that living arrangement with adult children moderates the positive impact of smartphone use on functional affordance, but there was no such moderating effect on emotional affordance. This study offers insights about how digital healthcare innovation will be applied to increase well-being of elders by applying framework of selective optimization with compensation.

Abstract
Background In older adults, including those with a migrant background, ill health is associated with less internet use. However, it is not known what are the specific self-perceived barriers to internet use among older migrants with different health conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between different health conditions and self-perceived barriers to internet use among older migrants. Methods We used the Care, Health and Ageing of Russian-speaking Minority in Finland (CHARM) study, which is a nationally representative survey of community-dwelling Russian-speaking adults aged ≥50 years living in Finland (N=1082, 57% men, mean age 63.2 years, standard deviation 8.4 years, response rate 36%). Postal survey data were collected in 2019. Health indicators were self-rated health (SRH), depressive symptoms, cognitive functioning, and doctor-diagnosed conditions. Linear regression analyses were used to investigate the associations between health indicators and a summary scale consisting of the following barriers of internet use: (1) internet use is too complicated and hard to learn; (2) having concerns about safety issues; (3) internet use is too expensive; (4) physical limitations hinder the internet use; (5) memory problems hinder the internet use. In addition, the two most commonly reported barriers (the first two) were examined separately using logistic regression analyses. The analyses were adjusted for age, sex, education, marital status, local language proficiency, and income support, and the health conditions, and were performed with weights accounting for the survey design and non-response. Results After adjustments, spine/back problems (b=0.13; p=0.049), depressive symptoms (b=0.40; p=0.007), and problems in learning new things (b=0.60; p<0.0005) were associated with higher level of overall barriers to internet use. In addition, a number of health conditions were associated with individual barriers, albeit some health conditions appeared protective. Conclusions In general, older migrants with declining health experience more barriers to internet use than their counterparts with better health. To provide better access to healthcare for older adults, including older migrants, rapidly changing devices, software and apps need to be modified and adapted for those with specific health-related needs.

Abstract
Background The capability in applying information communication technology (ICT) is crucial to the functional independence of older peoples of community living nowadays. The proper assessment of individuals' capability of ICT application is the corner stone for the future development of telemedicine in our aging population. Methods With the recruitment of 300 participants of different functional and social background in home-living, hostel-living, and care-and-attention home living; and through assessing the ability of individuals in instrumental activities of daily living and cognitive assessments, this study aimed at capturing the content validity and construct validity of the Advanced Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (AIADL scale). In addition, this study assess the ability of older peoples in applying ICT and how the functional and social background affects their independence in aging-in-place. Results The AIADL scale showed good test-retest reliability and good-to-excellent internal consistency. To determine if items of the AIADL scale measure various aspects of community living, exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure with “home living and management” and “community living”. Validity analysis with the known-groups method showed a high overall accuracy of prediction of individuals' capability of independent living in the community. Conclusions The AIADL scale is a valid and reliable instrument to assess the ability of older adults in handling ICT as part of their instrumental activities in daily living. The scale can reflect capability of older peoples in applying ICT. This instrument can serve as a reference in measuring readiness of individuals in receiving telemedicine and their ability of aging-in-place.

Abstract
Smartphone technologies can support older adults in their daily lives as they age in place at home. However, they may struggle to use these technologies which impacts acceptance, adoption, and sustainable use. Peer to peer community learning has the potential to support older adults to learn using (smartphone) technologies. This paper studies such a learning community approach and how it can support older adults to learn using and adopt the smartphone application GoLivePhone. This technology assists older adults in their daily living by supporting them through fall detection and activity tracking. In particular, the interface of this application can evolve and adapt as older adults become more knowledgeable during the use process or as their abilities change. This paper shows a field study with seven older adults learning and using the GoLivePhone technology through a living lab approach. These older adults participated in this research in a technology learning community that was set-up for research purposes. For this we used ordinary Samsung A3 smartphones with the simplified GoLivePhone software, particularly designed for older adults. At the end of the learning class we conducted an additional focus group to both explore factors facilitating older adults to learn using this technology and to identify their main personal drivers and motivators to start and adopt this technology. We collected qualitative data via open questions and audio recording during the focus group. This collected data was subject to a thematic analysis, coding was primarily performed by the first author, and reviewed by the other authors. We provide insights into how peer to peer community learning can contribute, and found both super-users and recall tools to be helpful to support sustainable use of smartphone technology to support older adults to age in place.

Abstract
As the percentage of the aging population increases, the incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) in China is increasing year by year. PD is both a public health and social problem facing the government and society as a whole. Persons with PD need reasonable medication management and rehabilitation strategies after a clear diagnosis. A proper home care plan can effectively slow the progression of PD. However, people with PD lack an effective way to manage their illnesses and cannot achieve the recommended clinical path in a family environment. Medication management, condition monitoring, and rehabilitation training are important components of the home care plan for PD. Persons with PD require strategies that delay the development of the disease and to adhere to treatment, which would contribute to improving their quality of life. Thus, we developed a small program called Care-PD to build a medicine management and service platform for PD. The development of Care-PD is a multi-dimensional model designed for PD, which is funded by the National Key R&D Program of China (No. 2018YFC1314700), and includes services such as medication management, symptom monitoring, professional counseling, home life, and community communication. Care-PD can become a key technology that increases the compliance of persons with PD with home care plans and improve measures to control the disease. In this article, we describe the medication management and services for PD based on the Care-PD program and its structure. The small program will improve the adverse conditions faced by persons with PD by combining the latest technology and clinical approaches. Meanwhile, we describe a verification strategy to evaluate the effectiveness of the Care-PD program as a comprehensive management strategy for PD.

Abstract
Smartphone use in the older population is understudied, despite a growing use of technology in this age group. This study characterized the relation of demonstrated smartphone expertise to self-reported health attitudes and behaviors in 85 community-dwelling adults, mean age 77.24 (7.64) years. Self-report instruments included a demographic survey, a health attitudes measure, and a mobility checklist. Participants completed a behavioral challenge, the Smartphone Task for Older Adults (STOA). Demonstrated expertise in smartphone use (STOA-DESU), familiarity with apps, and ability to replicate functions after demonstration showed differential relations with health outcomes. DESU was positively associated with education, income, Altarum Consumer Engagement Measure (ACE), and Life Space Questionnaire (LSQ) scores and was negatively associated with age and daily medications. Additional findings replicated aspects of the well-known digital divide, and showed that those older adults with restricted mobility or diabetes had less knowledge of and more difficulties in using smartphones. Despite these problems, health-related functions must be optimized for older populations.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment in cases of high-altitude cerebral edema is a less researched area of neuropsychiatry. Usually, it presents with depressive symptoms and can sway the treatment on the lines of organic depressive disorder and pseudodementia. We report one such case of which presented with depressive symptoms with cognitive dysfunction. The diagnosis was later revised to organic amnesic syndrome. His cognitive deficits improved with the use of cognitive retraining, especially with the use of mobile-based applications.
