Mapping Trends in Moyamoya Angiopathy Research: A 10-Year Bibliometric and Visualization-Based Analyses of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC)

Dyslipidemia in osteoarthritis: A study combining bibliometric analysis and retrospective data mining

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the common chronic arthritis in middle-aged and elderly people, but the effect of lipid metabolism on OA is still unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the value of lipid metabolism markers as emerging biomarkers for assessing OA disease activity. The literature on OA and lipid metabolism indicators was extensively analyzed by bibliometric. Correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between lipid profile indicators (total cholesterol; triglycerides [TG]; high density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C]; and low density lipoprotein cholesterol) and immunoinflammatory indicators (high sensitivity C-reactive protein; erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR]) in patients with OA as well as the disease activity level (visual analog scale (VAS). Logistic regression modeling was used to calculate univariate and multivariate factors of disease activity. A total of 843 papers were retrieved. China and the United States are the 2 most productive countries in this field, and the United States has the highest H-index. In addition, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage is the most published journal. OA lipid metabolism research has long focused on inflammation, lipid metabolism, and pain. The levels of inflammation (ESR, high sensitivity C-reactive protein) and lipid metabolism indicators (total cholesterol; TG, HDL-C) were significantly increased in OA patients. Inflammation indicators were significantly correlated with lipid metabolism indicators. In addition, HDL-C, ESR, and TG were identified as independent influencing factors for OA-VAS. In summary, the role of lipid metabolism in OA has been a hot topic. Markers of inflammation and lipid metabolism were independent influencing factors of OA-VAS.

Research trends of acupuncture therapy for painful peripheral nervous system diseases from 2004 to 2023: a bibliometric and meta-analysis

Background

Peripheral nervous system diseases (PNSD) have represented a major global health burden, leading to significant economic impacts and diminished productivity. This bibliometric analysis was performed to summarize the current research trends and hotspots over the past two decades, aiming to provide a comprehensive perspective for future research.

Methods

All data were sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on March 1, 2024, for publications between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2023. Data visualization and analyses, including descriptive statistics, co-occurrence mapping, and cluster analysis, were performed using CiteSpace (Version 6.1.R6) and Excel 2021.

Results

Our search yielded 678 references, with the annual publication count demonstrating an increasing trend over the past 20 years. The most productive country and institution were China and Kyung Hee University, respectively. Fang Jianqiao, was the most prolific author with the highest publications. Among journals, "Pain," was the most frequently cited, while the top-cited reference was a randomized controlled pilot trial by Lu Weidong in 2020. "Acupuncture" emerged as the keyword with the highest frequency. The meta-analysis indicated that acupuncture was more effective than standard care for pain associated with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy [MD = -2.03, 95% CI (-2.86, -1.21), 2 RCTs, 102 participants, p < 0.0001].

Conclusion

Our bibliometric review revealed key insights into the focal areas of PNSD research, underscoring the urgent need for continued and targeted high-quality investigations.

Organohalide respiration: retrospective and perspective through bibliometrics

Organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) play a pivotal role in the transformation of organohalogens in diverse environments. This bibliometric analysis provides a timely overview of OHRB research trends and identifies knowledge gaps. Publication numbers have steadily increased since the process was discovered in 1982, with fluctuations in total citations and average citations per publication. The past decade witnessed a peak in publications, underscoring heightened research activity and extensive collaboration. Thematic analysis identified two primary research foci: mechanistic exploration of OHRB and their interplay with environmental factors. Future research should prioritize elucidating the roles OHRB's play in biogeochemical cycling, utilizing synthetic biology tools for enhanced biotransformation, deciphering OHRB's ecological interactions, unraveling their evolutionary pathways, and investigating dehalogenation capabilities in other microorganisms, including archaea. These research directions promise to advance our understanding of microbially-driven organohalide transformations, microbial ecology, and genetic engineering potential, ultimately informing natural organohalide cycling and environmental management strategies.

A bibliometric analysis of immunotherapy for atherosclerosis: trends and hotspots prediction

Introduction

An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that immunotherapy may play a significant role in treating Atherosclerosis and has emerged as a promising therapy in this field. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive perspective through bibliometric analysis and investigate the existing hotspots and frontiers.

Methods

This study searched records from Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus from January 1, 1999, to May 27, 2023. By using bibliometric software CiteSpace (6.3.R1) and VOSviewer (1.6.19), co-occurrence analysis was used to count the frequency of co-occurrence of certain elements (e.g., countries, regions, institutions, etc.), cluster analysis was used to classify keywords, and burst analysis was used to identify research trends and hotspots.

Results

The results showed that the number of annual publications has grown in a fluctuating manner; the USA, China, and the Netherlands have the highest numbers of publications, and the top three institutions are located in the Netherlands, Sweden, and the USA. In addition, Nilsson J published the highest number of papers; Ridker PM and his article "Anti-inflammatory Therapy with Canakinumab for Atherosclerotic Disease" have played prominent roles. The top four Journals with the highest numbers of publications are "Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology", "Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine", "Circulation" and "Vaccine". In addition, keyword analysis indicates that inflammation, nanoparticles, adverse events associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, T cells and tumor necrosis factor will be future research hotspots.

Discussion

This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of immunotherapy in atherosclerosis, offering insights that advance scientific understanding. It not only assists researchers in grasping the current hotspots in this field but also reveals potential directions for future investigation. Moreover, future studies can optimize immunotherapy strategies based on hotspot predictions to decelerate the progression of atherosclerosis.

Global trends and topics in CDK7 inhibitor research: a bibliometric analysis

Background

CDK7 has been demonstrated to play a crucial role in the initiation and progression of malignancy. Therefore, targeting CDK7, which regulates the transcription process, has emerged as a new promising approach for treating cancer. Research on CDK7 inhibitors has significantly increased over the past 2 decades, with almost 600 related papers in the Web of Science Core Collection database. To effectively identify future research hotspots and potential future directions, it is crucial to systematically review and visually present the research on this topic from a comprehensive viewpoint, ensuring scientific reliability.

Methods

This study performed bibliometric analysis via CiteSpace and VOSviewer scientometrics analysis software to examine data on the publication of articles on CDK7 inhibitors over the past 2 decades; the data included country of publication, author names, institution names, scientific categories, cited journals, and keywords related to the field of CDK7 inhibitors.

Results

This bibliometric analysis included 426 publications from 41 different nations, referencing a total of 15,892 sources. Research associated with CDK7 inhibitors has rapidly expanded since 2016, and the US and China are the two countries with the highest publication output among the countries and institutes that produce literature on CDK7 inhibitors. Furthermore, the US is the country that most frequently engages in international cooperation. The evolution of keywords identifying antitumor strategies related to CDK7-mediated cellular transcription processes has been the research focus in recent years.

Conclusion

In this study, we identified research efforts and their evolving patterns and predicted advances in the CDK7 inhibitor field. The knowledge structure of CDK7 inhibitors encompasses pharmacological mechanisms, therapeutic targets, and cancer treatment strategies. The primary objectives of contemporary research are to discover the processes underlying cancer progression, identify specific signaling pathways, and develop effective clinical medicines.

A bibliometric analysis of research on pediatric preoperative anxiety (2007-2022)

Objective

This study aimed to analyze the current state of research on preoperative anxiety in children through CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the identification of hot spots and frontiers.

Method

Relevant data were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection using the search terms children and preoperative anxiety. Data were analyzed using VOSviewer (version 1.6.18), CiteSpace (5.7. R5) software, and Scimago Graphica.

Results

A total of 622 articles were published between 2007 and 2022, with an increasing trend over time. Kain, Zeev N. (13; 2.09%) and Dalhousie University (15; 2.41%) were the most influential authors and most prolific institutions, respectively. The United States (121; 19.45%) was the country with the most publications. Pediatric anesthesia (55; 8.84%) had the most publications. High-frequency keywords were categorized into three themes, including nonpharmacologic interventions for preoperative anxiety in children, preoperative medications, and risk factors for anxiety; of these, "predictor" (38; 2016) and "sedative premedication" (20; 2016) were the most studied keywords over the past 6 years. "Distraction" (67; 2019) and "dexmedetomidine" (65; 2019) have been the main areas of interest in recent years.

Conclusion

Research on preoperative anxiety in children has been the focus of increasing attention over the past fifteen years, with the majority of publications from high-income countries. This review provides a useful perspective for understanding research trends, hot topics, and research gaps in this expanding field.

Mapping trends in hemifacial spasm research: bibliometric and visualization-based analyses of the Web of Science Core Collection

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a common cranial nerve disease. In HFS research, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to examine the development and research trends. A retrieval of HFS studies published between 2011 and 2022 was performed from the Web of Science Core Collection in September 2022. Two scientometric tools were used to perform bibliometric and visualization-based analyses: VOSviewer and CiteSpace. Bibliometric analysis of 1461 studies published between 2011 and 2022 was carried out using data from 444 journals, 6021 authors, 1732 institutions, and 76 countries/regions. China, the USA, Japan, and South Korea were four key contributors to this study. Shanghai Jiaotong University was the major institution with the larger number of publications. Li Shiting was the most prolific author. Jannetta PJ was the most co-cited author. World Neurosurgery was the top prolific journal. Journal of Neurosurgery was the top co-cited journal. The top five keywords were hemifacial spasm, microvascular decompression, trigeminal neuralgia, surgery, and neurovascular compression. This study examines the research trends in global scientific research on HFS over the last decade. Researchers interested in learning more about current trends and novel research frontiers in this area can benefit from the study.

Bibliometric analysis of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for mild cognitive impairment

Objective

This study aims to analyze the current research status of acupuncture in the treatment of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using bibliometric methods, explore current research hotspots, and predict future research trends.

Methods

Literature on acupuncture for MCI in China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science (WOS) databases were searched from their inception to December 31, 2022. Articles were then filtered using inclusion and exclusion criteria and imported into VOSviewer 1.6.11 and CiteSpace 6.1.6msi software for descriptive analysis of publication numbers, network analysis of author/institution collaborations, and cluster analysis of keywords, as well as analysis of keyword emergence and linear relationships with time.

Results

The Chinese and English databases included 243 and 565 relevant articles, respectively. The overall volume of Chinese and English literature was stable, with the annual volume generally increasing. In terms of countries, institutions, and authors, China had the highest number of English-language publications; however, the number of joint publications among institutions/authors was low. Research institutions were independent and dispersed, with no collaborative teams formed around a single institution/author. The hotspots in Chinese literature were "needling, treatment, electric acupuncture, nimodipine, cognitive training" and other clinical research directions. The hotspots in English literature were "acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, cognitive impairment, memory, vascular dementia, mild cognitive impairment, stroke, hippocampus, injury," and other mechanisms of action.

Conclusion

The popularity of acupuncture for MCI is increasing year by year. Acupuncture for MCI, along with cognitive training, can help improve cognitive function. "Inflammation" is the frontier of acupuncture for MCI research. In the future, strengthening effective communication and cooperation among institutions, especially international cooperation, is essential for conducting high-quality research on acupuncture for MCI. This will help obtain high-level evidence and improve the output and translation of research results.

Characterization of Global Research Trends and Prospects on Moyamoya Disease: Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare cerebrovascular disease in neurology. This study investigates the literature related to MMD from its discovery to the present and identifies research levels, achievements, and trends.

METHODS

All publications on MMD from its discovery to present were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection on September 15, 2022 and bibliometric analyses were visualized by HistCite Pro, VOSviewer, Scimago Graphica, CiteSpace, and R language.

RESULTS

There were 3414 articles in 680 journals by 10,522 authors in 2441 institutions and 74 countries/regions worldwise are included in the analyses. Since the discovery of MMD, output of publications has shown an upward trend. Japan, the United States, China, and South Korea are 4 major countries in MMD. The United States has the strongest cooperation with other countries. China's Capital Medical University is the output-leading institution worldwide, followed by Seoul National University and Tohoku University. The 3 authors with the most published articles are Kiyohiro Houkin, Dong Zhang, and Satoshi Kuroda. World Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, and Stroke are the most recognized journals for researchers. Hemorrhagic moyamoya disease, susceptibility gene, and arterial spin are the primary focus areas of MMD research. "Rnf213,""vascular disorder," and "progress" are the top keywords.

CONCLUSIONS

We analyzed publications of global scientific research on MMD systematically by bibliometric methods. This study can provide one of the most comprehensive and accurate analyses for MMD scholars worldwide.

Value co-creation in business-to-business context: A bibliometric analysis using HistCite and VOS viewer

Abstract purpose

Value co-creation (VCC) recently displayed a significant increase in the frequency of publications in business studies and social sciences. Our study objects to explore the current state of VCC research in the business-to-business (B2B) context, principally in the marketing field.

Research design approach and methodology

This research article extracted research papers on VCC in the B2B context published in the last two decades through the Web of Science (WoS). Initially, we applied HistCite to determine the research dynamics of VCC articles and then VOS viewer to conduct bibliographic coupling and cartographic analysis. Furthermore, we found the most co-occurred keywords in the abstracts, titles, and keywords.

Findings

Our research explored that the United Kingdom was the most important country with 27 publications and 594 citations. Aarikka-Stenroos L was the most influential author, among his research is a systematic review which revealed that scholars of B2B journals adopted the term business "ecosystem" and studied the implications of ecosystem perspective in business and innovation networks and received the most citations. Industrial Marketing Management (IMM) was the most influential journal because it published 8 of the 10 most cited articles. One hundred and six out of 121 publications were in Business research and seventy-six were in management area, which made it the most hot and critical research area. Lappeenranta University was the most essential organization in VCC research based on the most records published and second-highest citations.

Research limitations/implications and future research

Four research streams have emerged which indicate the prominent role of VCC in the B2B context (1) VCC and relationships, (2) VCC and organizational capabilities, (3) VCC and actors' engagement at various platforms, and (4) VCC and processes. Our research paper provided a base for conceptualizing publications related to business, management, operations research management science, and social sciences interdisciplinary on VCC in the B2B context. Content analysis has revealed that research work on VCC in the B2B context is at an early stage in the marketing arena. Along with bringing some sort of consensus regarding researchers' opinion toward the nature and modality of VCC literature and process in the B2B context, we urge future research to focus on how relationships and their precursors can be efficiently utilized to co-create and enhance value within B2B interactions. We also request future research to focus on making the VCC process sustainable and viable both on a time and economical basis.

Practical implications

Organizations can involve customers and producers to work jointly to co-create value for their goods and services with negligible cost to achieve higher market shares and a competitive edge over rivals.

Originality/value

This might be the first bibliometric study conducted on VCC in the B2B context (there are some Bibliometric VCC publications, but they are not B2B-specific, our research is the first Bibliometric study conducted on VCC in the B2B context) in the marketing field and can expose novel avenues for future research.

Bibliometric Analysis of Post-Stroke Pain Research Published from 2012 to 2021

Background and Purpose

Pain is one of the most common symptoms in patients after stroke. It is a distressing experience that affects patients' quality of life, and it is highly prevalent in clinical practice. The pathogenesis mechanisms of PSP are not so clear, and there is currently a lack of effective medical treatments, hence it is necessary to establish a sufficient understanding of this disease. Limited number of studies have applied bibliometric methods to systematically analyze studies on post-stroke pain. This study aimed to systematically analyze scientific studies conducted worldwide on post-stroke pain from 2012 to 2021 to evaluate global trends in this field using a bibliometric analysis.

Methods

Publications related to post-stroke pain from 2012 to 2021 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Bibliometrics Biblioshiny R-package software was used to analyze the relationship of publication year with country, institution, journals, authors, and keywords and to generate variant visual maps to show annual publications, most relevant countries, authors, sources, keywords, and top-cited articles.

Results

In this study, 5484 papers met the inclusion criteria. The annual growth rate of publications was 5.13%. The USA had the highest number of publications (1381, 25.2%) and citations (36,395), and the University of Toronto had the highest number of papers (156, 2.8%). "Stroke", "management", "pain", "risk", "prevalence", "ischemic stroke", "risk factors", "disease", "diagnosis" and "therapy" are the top 10 keywords.

Conclusion

The global research interest regarding PSP has maintained growing over the past ten years. Both central post stroke pain and hemiplegic shoulder pain are the hottest research subjects. Further investigations are needed in order to reveal the mystery of the pathophysiologic mechanisms of CPSP, and high-quality well-designed trials of potential treatments of CPSP and HSP are also needed.

Research hotspots and trends of oculomotor nerve palsy from 2001 to 2021 based on web of science: A bibliometric analysis

Background

Oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP) is a clinically occurring neurological disorder. Due to the complex anatomy and long travel distances of the oculomotor nerve, the causes of ONP vary and manifest in various ways. With continued interest in this area, it has become necessary to conduct a bibliometric study in ONP. This work aims to synthesize and visually identify current research themes and future trends in ONP through a literature-based analysis.

Method

Articles and reviews on ONP published from 2002 to 2021 were derived from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. We generated visual images and performed quantitative and qualitative analysis through an online bibliometric tool, Citespace and VOSviewer software.

Results

A total of 1,205 published articles were included in this analysis. The annual number of this area's publications is showing an overall upward trend, with the number of citations increasing every year, reaching 2,698 by 2021. The United States (367) and Japan (116) dominated the list with the most numerous articles published. The University of California Los Angeles in the USA is the institution that published the highest number of articles (47). Engle EC (23) and the JOURNAL OF NEUROSURGERY (46) are the most influential authors and journals in this field. The co-occurrence network analysis divided the keywords into five main research themes, which mainly include clinical manifestations of ONP, aneurysms, cerebral neurological symptoms, diseases with ONP as a complication, and other neurological disorders.

Conclusion

This study is the first comprehensive and systematic bibliometric analysis of the current state of global ONP research over the past 20 years. We organized current hotspots and expected trends and provided key information for exploring potential research frontiers in ONP.

Research Hotspots and Global Trends of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Stroke: A Bibliometric Analysis

Purpose

Transcranial direct current stimulation has been widely used in the clinical treatment of stroke. The purpose of this study was to perform a bibliometric analysis of scientific literature in this field.

Methods

Articles and reviews regarding transcranial direct current stimulation in stroke from January 01, 2004 to May 31, 2022 were identified from the Science Citation Index-Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace 6.1.R2, Bibliometrix and the Bibliometric Online Analysis Platform were used to analyze data.

Results

A total of 905 papers were obtained, with the highest number of publications coming from the USA. The institutions and authors with the most publications were Harvard Medical School and Fregni F respectively. Nitsche MA had the most co-citations, followed by Fregni F. Neurosciences was the most fruitful research area and Brain Stimulation had the highest H-index. The research topics could be divided into three sections: mechanisms of treatment, comparison of efficacy with transcranial magnetic stimulation, clinical application of post-stroke dysfunction. The field of "walking", "strength" and "virtual reality therapy" are the future research hotspots of transcranial direct current stimulation.

Conclusion

The overall research showed a slow growth trend, and the outstanding contribution of the USA in this field cannot be ignored. Relevant researchers are suggested to focus on international collaboration and actively conduct high-quality randomized controlled clinical trials on research hotspots and frontiers in order to identify the optimal stimulation paradigm for clinical purposes.

Global research trends between gut microbiota and lung cancer from 2011 to 2022: A bibliometric and visualization analysis

Background

An increasing number of studies have found that the gut microbiota was related to the occurrence and development of lung cancer. Nonetheless, publication trends and research hotspots in this field remain unknown. The study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis to systematically identify publication trends and research hotspots in the field of gut microbiota and lung cancer research within a 12-year panorama.

Methods

Publications related to the gut microbiota and lung cancer between 1 January 2011 and 25 October 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. The online analytic tool of the WoSCC was used to analyze various bibliometric parameters. The bibliometrics website, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer were used to identify research trends and hotspots.

Results

A total of 375 publications related to the gut microbiota and lung cancer were extracted from WoSCC and identified for analysis. The number of annual publications has grown rapidly since 2018 and reached a peak in 2022. China was the most prolific country in this field, with 120 publications, followed by the United States (114), with the highest H-index of 31. Additionally, France ranked the highest with an average of 133 citations, while the leading institution and journal were the Unicancer and the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, respectively. Interestingly, Routy Bertrand was the most prolific author and also the most cited author in terms of H-index and citations. Reference and keyword burst detection indicated that the research hotspots mainly included 1) the gut microbiota directly affects the efficacy of immunotherapy for lung cancer, 2) the application of different gut bacteria on lung cancer, and 3) the mechanism of the gut microbiota on lung cancer.

Conclusion

The findings of this study revealed the general publication trends and evolving research hotspots in the field of gut microbiota and lung cancer at a global level. The research hotspots focused on the clinical application of the gut microbiota combined with immunotherapy in lung cancer and its mechanism. The findings of this study provide new perspectives on the field, which may shed light on a beneficial impact on further etiological studies, diagnosis, and treatment for lung cancer.

Non-suicidal self-injury: A bibliometrics study and visualization analysis from 2002 to 2022

OBJECTIVE

To overview the research actuality and offer the hotspots and cutting-edge issues in the field of Non-suicidal Self-injury (NSSI) by using bibliometric analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Publications related to NSSI from 2002 to 2022 were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace V 6.1.R2 and VOSviewer 1.6.18 were used to visually analyzed institutions, countries, journals, authors, references, and keywords in research on NSSI.

RESULTS

A total of 799 studies about NSSI were analyzed via CiteSpace and VOSviewer. The number of annual publications related to NSSI is fluctuating growth. The USA and Harvard University are the most productive country and institutions. In the case of journals and co-cited journals, Psychiatry Research are the most productive journal and also ranked highest among co-cited journals. Furthermore, Michael Kaess has published the most publications, and Matthew K. Nock is the most cited author. An article published by Swannell SV et al. shows the highest citation counts. After analysis, the most common keywords are harm, adolescents and prevalence. The gender difference, diagnosis, and dysregulation are frontier areas of NSSI research.

CONCLUSION

This study analyzed the research of NSSI from multiple perspectives, and provides valuable information for researchers to capture the current status, hot spots, and frontier trends of NSSI.

Trends of Tourette Syndrome in children from 2011 to 2021: A bibliometric analysis

Objective

Analyze the research status of Tourette Syndrome (TS) in children by CiteSpace and determine the current research hotspots and frontiers.

Materials and methods

We chose publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database for studies related to TS in children from 2011 to 2021. We built online cooperation maps of countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords by CiteSpace, and identified hotspots and frontiers of study for children’s TS.

Results

A total of 1,232 publications about TS in children were downloaded from the WoSCC. The USA (414) was the country with the highest rate of production, and University College London (87) was the institution that had the highest publication rate. Andrea Eugenio Cavanna was the most prolific author (39 papers). There was inactive cooperation between institutions, countries/regions, and authors. The Journal of European Child &amp; Adolescent Psychiatry was the most active journal. Hot topics focused on epidemiology, comorbidities, deep brain stimulation, behavioral therapy, basal ganglia, pharmacological treatment, and risk factors of TS in children.

Conclusion

According to the CiteSpace results, this study found that authors, countries/regions, and institutions were not actively working together. Current research hotspots mainly consist of epidemiology, comorbidities, deep brain stimulation, behavior therapy, and basal ganglia. The main research trends include comorbidities, pharmacological treatment, and risk factors. Therefore, international cooperation should be strengthened in the future, and it should be mindful of the psychiatric comorbidities of TS, the choice of intervention measures, and early warning of risk factors.

Research trends on anti-PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy for esophageal cancer: A bibliometric analysis

Objectives

The study aims to summarize publication characteristics of anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunotherapy for esophageal cancer and create scientific maps to explore hotspots and emerging trends with bibliometric methods.

Methods

The publications between 2012 and 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on June 20, 2022. Bibliometric tools including HistCite, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used for statistical analysis. Data on the trend of the annual output, countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, subject categories, keywords, and co-cited references were presented in this study.

Results

A total of 552 publications written by 3,623 authors of 872 institutions, 44 countries/regions in 250 journals were included in the bibliometric study. China, USA and Japan were the key countries in this field. Kato Ken, Bang Yung-Jue, Frontiers in Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Natl Canc Ctr were the top 1 productive author, co-cited author, productive journal, co-cited journal and prolific institution, respectively. The top 4 most present keywords were esophageal cancer, immunotherapy, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and PD-L1. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy, response, PD-1 blockade and CD8+ T cell were four latest research frontiers. The keywords reflected the progress from PD-1/PD-L1 expression to the clinical application of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors. The current researches mainly focus on neoadjuvant immunotherapy for esophageal cancer and development of biomarkers. Further research is warranted to determine effective predictive biomarkers or models, illustrate the molecular mechanism of combined treatment, and construct the optimal therapeutic strategy.

Conclusions

This study visually analyzed the global trend and hotspots of anti-PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy for esophageal cancer over the past decade. The results could guide scientists to comprehensively understand the global frontiers and determine future directions.

A visualized and scientometric analysis of research trends of weight loss in overweight/obese children and adolescents (1958-2021)

Background

Weight loss is an appropriate approach to reduce the health risks associated with overweight/obese children and adolescents, and the optimal method of weight loss requires further research. This study systematically explores scientific co-operation, disciplinary interaction, hotspots and trends in the field of weight loss in overweight/obese children and adolescents (WLOCA), and provides references for further research.

Methods

Citespace 5.8.R1 (64-bit) was adopted to conduct a comprehensive visualization analysis of the literature on WLOCA from Web of Science Core Collection, including publication, institution, country/region, author, journal, keywords and reference.

Results

2,513 papers were found in the Web of Science Core Collection, and the annual number of papers published has increased significantly since 2003. Cincinnati Children's Hospital is the institution with the largest number of publications, while Washington University plays a pivotal role in the collaboration network. In terms of nations, USA has made greater contributions than the rest in terms of the number of publications and global co-operation research. The most influential authors in this field are Thomas H. Inge, Thomas Reinehr, Todd M. Jenkins, Epstein LH, Ogden CL, etc. The most active journals are "Obesity," "International Journal of Obesity," "Obesity Surgery," "Pediatrics," etc. which are characterized by interdisciplinary interactions. Research hot topics mainly include "assessment of obesity and pathophysiological mechanism," "comprehensive intervention," and "bariatric surgery," and there's a gradual shift from "lifestyle intervention" and "pathophysiological mechanism" to "clinical surgical application." In addition, disciplinary integration and comprehensive research, targeted intervention and treatment, and prospective research are the future research trends.

Conclusion

The overall trend in WLOCA study is positive. The main contribution of this study is to reveal the overall picture of the research in this field with visual maps and detailed data by combining quantitative with qualitative approaches, which can provide valuable references for relevant researchers to quickly understand the status of studies on WLOCA, to seek co-operation, and grasp research hotspots and frontier trends.

The evolution of intracranial aneurysm research from 2012 to 2021: Global productivity and publication trends

Background

This study aimed to analyze the global research trends and map the knowledge network of intracranial aneurysm (IA) research in the last 10 years.

Methods

Publications related to IA from 2012 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection. Microsoft Excel 2010 and VOSviewer were used to characterize the largest contributors, including authors, journals, institutions, and countries. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were adopted to analyze the trends and knowledge network of IA.

Results

A total of 5,406 publications related to IA from 2012 to 2021 were identified, increasing from 344 in 2012 to 762 in 2021. Siddiqui, AH from the USA contributed the most publications. Papers published in the journal World Neurosurgery ranked first in quantity, while Stroke ranked first for total citations and citations per publication. The top three prolific institutions were Capital Medical University, Mayo Clinic, and the University Department of Neurology Utrecht from 2012 to 2021. Moreover, the USA held the greatest share in the field, and China was almost on par with the USA due to its rapid growth. Specifically, the most frequently covered topics over the recent decade were subarachnoid hemorrhage, endovascular treatment (EVT), clipping, vascular disorders, flow diverter, stent, delayed cerebral ischemia, inflammation, and hemodynamics.

Conclusion

The contribution made by different countries, institutions, journals, and authors for IA research over the past decade was demonstrated in the paper. The main topics include the choice of EVT or surgical clipping, particularly the application of flow diverter and associated complications, while themes such as the etiopathogenetic features of IA (e.g., inflammation and hemodynamics) deserve more attention.

Bibliometric analysis of global research trends on post-stroke pneumonia: Current development status and research Frontiers

Background

As one of the most common complications of stroke, post-stroke pneumonia significantly increases the incidence of adverse outcomes, mortality, and healthcare costs for patients with stroke. As the field of post-stroke pneumonia has gained interest in the recent years, there has been an increasing number of publications on post-stroke pneumonia research worldwide. Therefore, a more comprehensive understanding of the field is needed now. This paper is intended to analyze the research status and detect the research frontiers in this field.

Methods

VOS viewer, CiteSpace, and the online scientometric platform (https://bibliometric.com/) were the main visualization tools used in this paper. They were used to perform citation analysis of countries/institutions, co-citation analysis of authors/journals/references, co-authorship analysis of authors, co-occurrence analysis of keywords, and citation bursts analysis of references.

Results

The number of publications in this field has increased rapidly since 2010 and is expected to continue to increase in the next few years. The countries contributing most to post-stroke pneumonia research were the USA, China, and Germany. The most productive institution was Harvard University, followed by Humboldt University of Berlin, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Free University of Berlin from Germany. Meanwhile, the German authors Meisel A, Meisel C, and Dirnagl U, who have contributed significantly to this field, were all associated with these three German institutions. The high-quality and high output journal was STROKE. In the coming years, the hot topic keywords “risk & risk-factors,” “outcome & impact,” “management & guidelines,” and “predictors” will gain more attention in this field. Finally, hot keywords were grouped into four clusters in this paper: cluster 1 (risk-factors studies of post-stroke pneumonia), cluster 2 (clinically relevant studies of post-stroke pneumonia), cluster 3 (mechanism studies of post-stroke pneumonia), and cluster 4 (care studies of post-stroke pneumonia).

Conclusion

This study shows the knowledge structure and evolution of the field of post-stroke pneumonia research and predicts research trends through visualization analysis. The future trend of post-stroke pneumonia research will gradually shift from clinical and mechanistic studies to treatment and prevention studies.

Global Trends and Hot-Spots in Research on Virtual Simulation in Nursing: A Bibliometric Analysis From 1999 to 2021

Background

Virtual simulation has been widely used in nursing education and nursing training. This study aims to characterize the publications in terms of countries, institutions, journals, authors, collaboration relationships, and analyze the trends of virtual simulation in nursing research.

Methods

Publications regarding virtual simulation in nursing were retrieved from Web of Science core collection. Microsoft Excel 2010, VOSviewer were used to characterize the contributions of the authors, journals, institutions, and countries. The trends, hot-spots and knowledge network were analyzed by Citespace and VOSviewer.

Results

We identified 677 papers between 1999 and 2021. The number of publications grew slowly until 2019, after that, it got a sharp increase in 2020 and 2021. The USA, Canada and Australia were three key contributors to this field. Centennial College and University of San Paulo, University of Ottawa and Ryerson University were top major institutions with a larger number of publications. Verkuyl M was the most productive and highest cited author. Clinical Simulation in Nursing, Nurse Education Today, Journal of Nursing Education were the three productive journals. The foundational themes of virtual simulation research in nursing are “virtual learning during COVID-19, clinical nursing care, education in nurse practitioners, education technology”.

Conclusion

Virtual simulation in nursing field has attracted considerable attention during COVID-19 pandemic. The research hotspot is gradually shifting from clinical nursing care to studies of nursing education using different virtual simulation technologies

Global Trends and Hotspots in Trigeminal Neuralgia Research From 2001 to 2021: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background

In recent years, there have been an increasing number of studies on trigeminal neuralgia (TN). However, a scientific and comprehensive study of the current situation and trends in the field of TN research is lacking. The purpose of this study is to summarize and visualize the development, research hotspots, and future trends in TN based on a bibliometric approach.

Methods

Studies on TN published from 2001 to 2021 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Bibliometrics, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer tools were used for bibliometric analysis and visualization.

Results

In total, 4,112 documents were searched. The number of research articles in the field is generally on an upward trend, with the fastest growth in the number of articles from 2017 to 2020. Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Pittsburgh University, and Mayo Clinic are the three institutions with the most publications. Shiting Li and Zakrzewska JM are the most prolific author and top co-cited authors, respectively. The Journal of Neurosurgery is the most influential journal. The top 5 keywords in that time frame are TN, microvascular decompression, facial pain, stereotactic radiosurgery, and neuropathic pain.

Conclusion

This is the first comprehensive scientific bibliometric analysis of the global research field on TN over the past 21 years, providing a meaningful reference for further exploration of topical issues and research trends in the field.

The Application of Angiotensin Receptor Neprilysin Inhibitor in Cardiovascular Diseases: A Bibliometric Review From 2000 to 2022

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has become a huge challenge for the global public health system due to its high morbidity, mortality and severe economic burden. In recent years, angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI), a new class of drugs, has shown good therapeutic effects on CVD patients in several clinical studies, reducing the morbidity and mortality of CVD patients. In this study, we retrieved publications on ARNI research in the cardiovascular field from the Web of Science core collection and analyzed the annual output, spatial and temporal distribution, institutions and authors, core journals, keywords and co-cited literature based on CiteSpace. As a result, 604 publications were retrieved, and the number of annual publications generally increased year by year, with the largest number of articles. The analysis of the co-occurrence of output countries and authors showed that a few developed countries such as the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom are the most active in this field, forming academic groups represented by John Joseph Valentine McMurray and Scott D. Solomon, and New England Journal of Medicine, Cirulation, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology are the most popular journals in the field, with research hotspots focused on ARNI in the treatment of total ejection fraction heart failure, hypertension and its target organ damage, with the potential for future benefit throughout the cardiovascular event chain as research progresses. This study reveals the prospective application of ARNI in the cardiovascular field and the research hotspots, providing broader and deeper guidance for its use in the clinic, which is beneficial to improve the treatment and prognosis of CVD patients.

Epilepsy With Suicide: A Bibliometrics Study and Visualization Analysis via CiteSpace

Objective:

The purpose of this study was to analyze the research status of epilepsy with suicide and to determine the hotspots and frontiers via CiteSpace.

Method:

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for studies related to epilepsy and suicide from inception to September 30, 2021. We used CiteSpace to generate online maps of collaboration between countries, institutions, and authors, and revealed hot spots and frontiers in epilepsy with suicide.

Results:

A total of 631 publications related to epilepsy with suicide were retrieved from the WoSCC. Andres M. Kanner was the most published author (25 papers). The USA and Columbia University were the leading country and institution in this field, with 275 and 25 papers, respectively. There were active cooperation between institutions, countries, and authors. Hot topics focused on depression, antiseizure medications, pediatric epilepsy, and risk factors of suicide in patients with epilepsy (PWEs).

Conclusions:

Based on the CiteSpace findings, this study detected active collaboration among countries, institutions and authors. The main current research trends include suicide caused by depression, suicide caused by the use of antiseizure medications, suicide in children with epilepsy, and risk factors for suicide in PWEs. Thus, more attention should be paid to the psychiatric comorbidity of PWEs (especially pediatric epilepsy), the suicidal tendency of PWEs, and the rational use of antiseizure medications in the future.

Ring finger protein 213 c.14576G>A mutation is not involved in internal carotid artery and middle cerebral artery dysplasia

The ring finger protein 213 (RNF213) susceptibility gene has been detected in more than 80% of Japanese and Korean patients with moyamoya disease (MMD), a bilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion. Furthermore, RNF213 has been detected in more than 20% of East Asians with atherosclerotic ICA stenosis. In this study, we evaluated the frequency of RNF213 mutations in congenital occlusive lesions of the ICA system. This case series was conducted jointly at four university hospitals. Patients with a family history of MMD, quasi-MMD, or related diseases were excluded. Ten patients were diagnosed with abnormal ICA or middle cerebral artery (MCA) angiogenesis. Patients with neurofibromatosis were excluded. Finally, nine patients with congenital vascular abnormalities were selected; of these, five had ICA deficiency and four had twig-like MCA. The RNF213 c.14576G > A mutation was absent in all patients. Therefore, the RNF213 c.14576G > A mutation may not be associated with ICA and MCA congenital dysplasia—rare vascular anomalies making it difficult to study a large number of cases. However, an accumulation of cases is required for accurate determination. The results of this study may help differentiate congenital vascular diseases from MMD.
