Vibrotactile Discrimination Training Affects Brain Connectivity in Profoundly Deaf Individuals

Cortical activations induced by electrical versus vibrotactile finger stimulation using EEG

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) recorded with electroencephalography offer insights into cortical responses to tactile stimulation, typically elicited through temporally precise electrical stimulation. Although vibrotactile stimulation is more ecologically valid but less common, studies directly comparing EEG responses to both electrical and vibrotactile finger stimulation are limited. This study examines and compares (a) cortical responses, (b) connectivity patterns, and (c) somatotopic accuracy of these stimulation types on the fingers. In two experiments, SEPs were recorded from healthy participants' right-hand finger stimulation, using either electrical (experiment 1, n = 22) or vibrotactile (experiment 2, n = 22) stimulation. Vibrotactile stimuli were delivered at 10, 50, and 250 Hz, targeting different ranges of tactile mechanoreceptors activations. Electrical stimulation reliability was assessed across two days, showing consistent SEP amplitudes and latencies. Both stimulation types generated three early components (P1, N1, P2), but all vibrotactile components were increasingly delayed compared to electrical stimulation. Vibrotactile stimulation exhibited stronger localized connectivity in early components (P1, N1) in the left hemisphere, while electrical stimulation showed broader connectivity at P2. Electrical stimulation provided a clearer somatotopic organization in the postcentral gyrus than vibrotactile stimulation. These findings suggest distinct processing for electrical versus vibrotactile finger stimulation. These two stimulation methods are not interchangeable in somatosensory studies: the temporal shift in vibrotactile responses reflects selective activation of Pacinian corpuscles, whereas electrical stimulation yields stronger generalized cortical processing. Electrical stimulation may engage a serial processing pathway starting in the primary somatosensory cortex, while vibrotactile stimulation could involve parallel processing in both primary and secondary somatosensory cortices.

Effect of Computerized Training Programs for Attention and Perception for Patients with Hearing Aids

INTRODUCTION

Sensorineural hearing loss is a common problem, especially among geriatric patients, and it requires hearing aids. Unfortunately, most geriatric patients are hesitant to use hearing aids. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether computerized training therapies increase the attention and perception of patients who have been given hearing aids using psychophysiological tests and wave P300 records.

METHODS

One hundred patients (40 women and 60 men) who used hearing aids were included in our study. Sixty patients (30 women and 30 men) received computerized training therapies with hearing aids. After the psychophysiological tests, the study group was divided into three groups according to the role given to patients. Passive training was given in group 1; interactive training was given in group 2; and group 3 was active, questioning training. Measurements of P300 wave latencies, stimuli-P300 peak, and baseline-P300 peak were performed before and after training. The control group consisted of 40 patients who did not receive training and were treated with hearing aids only.

RESULTS

We found a significant difference between the pre- and post-training measures of the P300 wave (p < 0.001). Pre-training measurements of P300 waves were recorded for 12% in group 1 and 9.1% in groups 2 and 3 (p = 0.24). Post-training measurements of the P300 wave records were 80% in group 1 and 72.7% in groups 2 and 3 (p = 0.22).

CONCLUSION

Attention and perception can be measured with the P300 wave. All computer-supported training programs showed an increase of the P300 wave, suggesting that attention and perception of patients with hearing loss can be increased with computer-supported training programs provided with hearing aids.

Somatosensory processing in deaf and deafblind individuals: How does the brain adapt as a function of sensory and linguistic experience? A critical review

How do deaf and deafblind individuals process touch? This question offers a unique model to understand the prospects and constraints of neural plasticity. Our brain constantly receives and processes signals from the environment and combines them into the most reliable information content. The nervous system adapts its functional and structural organization according to the input, and perceptual processing develops as a function of individual experience. However, there are still many unresolved questions regarding the deciding factors for these changes in deaf and deafblind individuals, and so far, findings are not consistent. To date, most studies have not taken the sensory and linguistic experiences of the included participants into account. As a result, the impact of sensory deprivation vs. language experience on somatosensory processing remains inconclusive. Even less is known about the impact of deafblindness on brain development. The resulting neural adaptations could be even more substantial, but no clear patterns have yet been identified. How do deafblind individuals process sensory input? Studies on deafblindness have mostly focused on single cases or groups of late-blind individuals. Importantly, the language backgrounds of deafblind communities are highly variable and include the usage of tactile languages. So far, this kind of linguistic experience and its consequences have not been considered in studies on basic perceptual functions. Here, we will provide a critical review of the literature, aiming at identifying determinants for neuroplasticity and gaps in our current knowledge of somatosensory processing in deaf and deafblind individuals.

Quantitative EEG measures in profoundly deaf and normal hearing individuals while performing a vibrotactile temporal discrimination task

Challenges in early oral language acquisition in profoundly deaf individuals have an impact on cognitive neurodevelopment. This has led to the exploration of alternative sound perception methods involving training of vibrotactile discrimination of sounds within the language spectrum. In particular, stimulus duration plays an important role in linguistic categorical perception. We comparatively evaluated vibrotactile temporal discrimination of sound and how specific training can modify the underlying electrical brain activity. Fifteen profoundly deaf (PD) and 15 normal-hearing (NH) subjects performed a vibrotactile oddball task with simultaneous EEG recording, before and after a short training period (5 one-hour sessions; in 2.5-3 weeks). The stimuli consisted of 700 Hz pure-tones with different duration (target: long 500 ms; non-target: short 250 ms). The sound-wave stimuli were delivered by a small device worn on the right index finger. A similar behavioral training effect was observed in both groups showing significant improvement in sound-duration discrimination. However, quantitative EEG measurements reveal distinct neurophysiological patterns characterized by higher and more diffuse delta band magnitudes in the PD group, together with a generalized decrement in absolute power in both groups that might reflect a facilitating process associated to learning. Furthermore, training-related changes were found in the beta-band in NH. Findings suggest PD have different cognitive adaptive mechanisms which are not a mere amplification effect due to greater cortical excitability.

Tactile Enumeration and Embodied Numerosity Among the Deaf

Representations of the fingers are embodied in our cognition and influence performance in enumeration tasks. Among deaf signers, the fingers also serve as a tool for communication in sign language. Previous studies in normal hearing (NH) participants showed effects of embodiment (i.e., embodied numerosity) on tactile enumeration using the fingers of one hand. In this research, we examined the influence of extensive visuo-manual use on tactile enumeration among the deaf. We carried out four enumeration task experiments, using 1-5 stimuli, on a profoundly deaf group (n = 16) and a matching NH group (n = 15): (a) tactile enumeration using one hand, (b) tactile enumeration using two hands, (c) visual enumeration of finger signs, and (d) visual enumeration of dots. In the tactile tasks, we found salient embodied effects in the deaf group compared to the NH group. In the visual enumeration of finger signs task, we controlled the meanings of the stimuli presentation type (e.g., finger-counting habit, fingerspelled letters, both or neither). Interestingly, when comparing fingerspelled letters to neutrals (i.e., not letters or numerical finger-counting signs), an inhibition pattern was observed among the deaf. The findings uncover the influence of rich visuo-manual experiences and language on embodied representations. In addition, we propose that these influences can partially account for the lag in mathematical competencies in the deaf compared to NH peers. Lastly, we further discuss how our findings support a contemporary model for mental numerical representations and finger-counting habits.

Flex-printed forehead EEG sensors (fEEGrid) for long-term EEG acquisition

OBJECTIVE

In this report we present the fEEGrid, an electrode array applied to the forehead that allows convenient long-term recordings of electroencephalography (EEG) signals over many hours.

APPROACH

Twenty young, healthy participants wore the fEEGrid and completed traditional EEG paradigms in two sessions on the same day. The sessions were eight hours apart, participants performed the same tasks in an early and a late session. For the late session fEEGrid data were concurrently recorded with traditional cap EEG data.

MAIN RESULTS

Our analyses show that typical event-related potentials responses were captured reliably by the fEEGrid. Single-trial analyses revealed that classification was possible above chance level for auditory and tactile oddball paradigms. We also found that the signal quality remained high and impedances did not deteriorate, but instead improved over the course of the day. Regarding wearing comfort, all participants indicated that the fEEGrid was comfortable to wear and did not cause any pain even after 8 h of wearing it.

SIGNIFICANCE

We show in this report, that high quality EEG signals can be captured with the fEEGrid reliably, even in long-term recording scenarios and with a signal quality that may be considered suitable for online brain-computer Interface applications.
