Abstract
Mycotoxins, toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi, pose a significant threat to food safety and human health. The occurrence of mycotoxins in food commodities necessitates accurate and reliable detection methods. Advanced detection techniques, such as chromatographic techniques and immunochemical assays, have improved sensitivity and specificity. However, the lack of standardized reference material, particularly in less privileged countries, hinders method validation and proficiency testing, ultimately affecting mycotoxin testing and regulation. Moreover, these techniques are complex as they require specialized equipment, and well-trained personnel, thus limiting their practical applications. This comprehensive review provides an up-to-date overview of the occurrence of mycotoxins and recent advancements in detection methods. It examines the crucial role of mycotoxin standards as reference materials for ensuring reliable results in mycotoxins analysis in agriculture commodities. The review addresses emerging challenges, knowledge gaps, and future research directions in mycotoxin detection and reference material development. By synthesizing existing literature, this review aims to provide valuable resources for researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders in food safety, highlighting the importance of integrated approaches to mitigate mycotoxin contamination and ensuring food safety.

Abstract
Rigorous research on the health effects of dietary supplements and related nutritional interventions requires thorough chemical characterization of complex matrices for their composition of macro- and micronutrients, botanical phytochemicals, and potential contaminants. Reference materials (RMs) with metrologically traceable values for these specific properties are ideal analytical tools to ensure requisite chemical measurements are reliable. However, identifying and comparing appropriate RMs for studying dietary ingredients and their metabolites is challenging, creating a barrier to reproducible regulatory testing and research. To address this challenge, the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health coordinated the development of a new publicly available Reference Materials Search Tool ( https://odsrmst.od.nih.gov/ ) database featuring comprehensive data records and search and comparison functionality. The RMST significantly expands research capacities to discover and select fit for purpose reference materials for dietary supplement and related food and natural product chemical analysis.

Abstract
For two decades, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements have collaborated to develop dietary supplement-matrix reference materials. During the first decade, NIST developed over 20 botanical and non-botanical dietary supplement Standard Reference Materials (SRMs®) using multiple analytical techniques to assign values for selected marker compounds and toxic elements. In the past decade, NIST has expanded the scope of materials available, and other producers of certified reference materials (CRMs) have joined to provide a limited number of additional materials. This review describes briefly the first decade in the development of CRMs for dietary supplements, primarily botanical dietary supplement ingredients (e.g., ginkgo, green tea, saw palmetto, St. Johns' wort, botanical oils, berries, and soy) and a popular multivitamin/multimineral (MVM) SRM. We discuss the analytical challenges in producing these materials and how these materials established a model for the next generation of CRMs. The second generation of dietary supplement CRMs/RMs, consisting primarily of botanical matrices, calibration solutions, and new and replacement MVM CRMs, is discussed in greater detail including improvements based on experiences from the first decade and potential future needs and developments in this emerging reference material research sector.

Abstract
Species identification of botanical products is a crucial aspect of research and regulatory compliance; however, botanical classification can be difficult, especially for morphologically similar species with overlapping genetic and metabolomic markers, like those in the genus Ocimum. Untargeted LC-MS metabolomics coupled with multivariate predictive modeling provides a potential avenue for improving herbal identity investigations, but the current dearth of reference materials for many botanicals limits the applicability of these approaches. This study investigated the potential of using greenhouse-grown authentic Ocimum to build predictive models for classifying commercially available Ocimum products. We found that three species, O. tenuiflorum, O. gratissimum, and O. basilicum, were chemically distinct based on their untargeted UPLC-MS/MS profiles when grown in controlled settings; combined with an orthogonal high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) approach, O. tenuiflorum materials revealed two distinct chemotypes which could confound analysis. Three predictive models (partial least squares, LASSO regression, and random forest) were employed to extrapolate these findings to commercially available products; however, the controlled materials were significantly different from external samples, and all three chemometric models were unreliable in classifying external materials. LASSO was the most successful when classifying new greenhouse samples. Overall, this study highlights how growing and processing conditions can influence the complexity of botanical metabolome profiles; further studies are needed to characterize the factors driving herbal products' phytochemistry in conjunction with chemometric predictive modeling.

Abstract
Introduction Extracts from the rhizome of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Corydalis yanhusuo (CY) mediate a number of biologic effects that are associated with its content of isoquinoline alkaloids. CY alkaloids have shown analgesic, cardioprotective, and anti-addictive effects in animal models of disease. Since CY alkaloids are available to consumers as dietary supplements we analyzed the content of alkaloids in 14 products including open powders, capsules, and liquid formulations, capturing a majority of the products available online in the US. Methods Nineteen alkaloids were quantified using HPLC analyses with diode array detection after extraction using a weak cation exchange column. Results Total alkaloid content was highly variable among the products, ranging from below quantifiable in some to ≈11 mg/g in others. Five of the products had comparable content of alkaloids (9.5 ± 1.6 mg/g), equaling about the amount of alkaloids of an extract prepared from CY rhizome (12.7 mg/g). The other samples had much lower content (1.8 ± 0.9 mg/g), or alkaloids were below quantifiable. One of the products was highly enriched in tetrahydropalmatine (≈5 mg/g), suggesting adulteration from the natural product, and raising concerns about possible toxicologic liability. Discussion Considering alkaloid content as a key quality criterium for CY supplements, the large variability among the products seems unacceptable and makes it difficult for consumers to select products with an appropriate content of alkaloids.

Abstract
Background: esports, or organized video game competitions, have been expanding quickly. The use of dietary supplements by esports players appears vulgarized but lacks supporting evidence. Objectives: To outline studies that tested the effects of dietary supplements on video gaming, summarize their findings, highlight knowledge gaps, and recommend future research. Eligibility criteria: Clinical trials published in English between 1990 and 2023 that assessed the effects of dietary supplements on the cognitive performance of video gamers. Sources of evidence: The Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Charting methods: PRISMA's (2020) flow diagram was used to create the data chart. Results: Sixteen studies were outlined. Thirteen were randomized, thirteen applied acute interventions, ten applied a crossover design and only three weren't placebo-controlled. Of the 10 studies that included caffeine (40-200 mg), four reported significant positive effects on cognition (attention, processing speed, working memory), two on first-person shooter video gaming performance (reaction time, hit accuracy, time to hit 60 targets), and one on Tetris game score. All 3 studies that included arginine silicate (1500 mg) reported significant improvements in one or more aspects of cognition (reaction time, attention, visual representation, and spatial planning). Two studies that tested sucrose (21 and 26.8 g) didn't report significant improvements, while one study that tested 26.1 g of glucose registered significant positive effects on processing speed and sustained attention. Conclusions: The published literature has focused on the effects of caffeine, which may exert both positive and negative effects on esports players. Additional, high-quality research is needed.

Abstract
Herbal drugs (HD) or traditional drugs have been used worldwide for centuries, especially in the developing countries. Global market of HD reaches billion of USD annually and increases every year. For ensuring the safety and efficacy of HD, the Drug Agency/Authority issues regulations for the registration & application of new HD, their manufacturing processes, controlling and monitoring in the market. The efficacy and safety of HD depend on their whole chemical contents. Quality assessment of HD should be performed using standardization methods according to the current Pharmacopoeias or Materia Medica. Unfortunately, the official methods of the compendia cannot be applied for evaluation of mixed herbs and their preparations.; HD's producers should develop, validate, and standardize the method for the quality assessment of their own specific products. Therefore, assuring the safety and efficacy of HD remains a challenging task due to the complex nature of HD, that typically consist of many constituents of herbs/extracts whose quality may vary among different sources of materials. This present review will describe, compare, and discuss the regulations and standardization methods of HD from US, EU countries, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia. The official standardization methods of HD, their current criteria, limitations, challenge and future prospective will be described and discussed. Official methods for quality assessment of HD should be state of the art, fast, low-cost, accurate and precise, and could be used for evaluation of all kinds of HD.

Abstract
Interest in botanicals, particularly as dietary supplement ingredients, is growing steadily. This growth, and the marketing of new ingredients and combination products as botanical dietary supplements, underscores the public health need for a better understanding of potential toxicities associated with use of these products. This article and accompanying template outline the resources to collect literature and relevant information to support the design of botanical toxicity studies. These resources provide critical information related to botanical identification, characterization, pre-clinical and clinical data, including adverse effects and interactions with pharmaceuticals. Toxicologists using these resources should collaborate with pharmacognosists and/or analytical chemists to enhance knowledge of the botanical material being tested. Overall, this guide and resource list is meant to help locate relevant information that can be leveraged to inform on decisions related to toxicity testing of botanicals, including the design of higher quality toxicological studies.

Abstract
The prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) markedly increases with age. Phytotherapeutic approaches have been developed over time owing to the adverse side effects of conventional medications such as 5-reductase inhibitors and α1-adrenergic receptor antagonists. Therefore, dietary supplements (DS) containing active compounds that benefit BPH are widely available. Phytosterols (PSs) are well recognized for their role in maintaining blood cholesterol levels; however, their potential in BPH treatment remains unexplored. This review aims to provide a general overview of the available data regarding the clinical evidence and a good understanding of the detailed pharmacological roles of PSs-induced activities at a molecular level in BPH. Furthermore, we will explore the authenticity of PSs content in DS used by patients with BPH compared to the current legislation and appropriate analytical methods for tracking DS containing PSs. The results showed that PSs might be a useful pharmacological treatment option for men with mild to moderate BPH, but the lack of standardized extracts linked with the regulation of DS containing PSs and experimental evidence to elucidate the mechanisms of action limit the use of PSs in BPH. Moreover, the results suggest multiple research directions in this field.

Abstract
The potential of antioxidants in preventing several diseases has attracted great attention in recent years. Indeed, these products are part of a multi-billion industry. However, there is a lack of scientific information about safety, quality, doses, and changes over time. In the present work, a simple multisample methodology based on chemiluminiscent imaging to determine chlorogenic acid (CHLA) in green coffee samples has been proposed. The multi-chemiluminiscent response was obtained after a luminol-persulfate reaction at pH 10.8 in a multiplate followed by image capture with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera as a readout system. The chemiluminiscent image was used as an analytical response by measuring the luminescent intensity at 0 °C with the CCD camera. Under the optimal conditions, the detection limit was 20 µM and precision was also adequate with RSD < 12%. The accuracy of the proposed system was evaluated by studying the matrix effect, using a standard addition method. Recoveries of chlorogenic acid ranged from 93-94%. The use of the CCD camera demonstrated advantages such as analysis by image inspection, portability, and easy-handling which is of particular relevance in the application for quality control in industries. Furthermore, multisample analysis was allowed by one single image saving time, energy, and cost. The proposed methodology is a promising sustainable analytical tool for quality control to ensure green coffee safety through dosage control and proper labelling preventing potential frauds.

Abstract
Herbal drugs or herbal medicines (HMs) have a long-standing history as natural remedies for preventing and curing diseases. HMs have garnered greater interest during the past decades due to their broad, synergistic actions on the physiological systems and relatively lower incidence of adverse events, compared to synthetic drugs. However, assuring reproducible quality, efficacy, and safety from herbal drugs remains a challenging task. HMs typically consist of many constituents whose presence and quantity may vary among different sources of materials. Fingerprint analysis has emerged as a very useful technique to assess the quality of herbal drug materials and formulations for establishing standardized herbal products. Rather than using a single or two marker(s), fingerprinting techniques take great consideration of the complexity of herbal drugs by evaluating the whole chemical profile and extracting a common pattern to be set as a criterion for assessing the individual material or formulation. In this review, we described and assessed various fingerprinting techniques reported to date, which are applicable to the standardization and quality control of HMs. We also evaluated the application of multivariate data analysis or chemometrics in assisting the analysis of the complex datasets from the determination of HMs. To ensure that these methods yield reliable results, we reviewed the validation status of the methods and provided perspectives on those. Finally, we concluded by highlighting major accomplishments and presenting a gap analysis between the existing techniques and what is needed to continue moving forward.

Abstract
Certified reference materials (CRMs) are routinely used by analytical chemists to validate new analytical methods and to demonstrate the quality of their quantitative measurements. Even though CRMs for trace element and trace organic analysis have been available and widely used for over 50 years, the majority of papers published in analytical chemistry journals do not mention the use of CRMs. What if analytical/bioanalytical chemistry journals required the use of CRMs to publish a paper? This feature article attempts to address this question by providing examples of recent papers that have made exceptional use of CRMs to validate new analytical methods and to describe novel, alternative uses of CRMs that provide new characterization of the CRM. The potential benefits of using a CRM even when it does not have certified values for the analytes of interest are presented.
