Abstract
Background/Objective: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a key biomarker of autonomic function, linked to morbidity and mortality across various diseases. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) shows therapeutic promise, but its effects on HRV and the influence of specific stimulation parameters remain unclear. This study investigated whether the acute effects of taVNS on HRV depend on combinations of stimulation frequency and pulse width. Methods: Seventy-eight healthy adults participated in seven randomized sessions, each testing one of six active taVNS protocols or an inactive sham condition applied to the cymba conchae of the left ear. The active protocols varied by frequency (10 Hz or 25 Hz) and pulse width (100 µs, 250 µs, or 500 µs). The sessions included 15 min of baseline, 15 min of taVNS or sham condition, and 10 min of recovery. HRV was calculated using the standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN) and the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) from continuous ECG recordings. Results: The 10 Hz/250 µs, 10 Hz/500 µs, and 25 Hz/100 µs protocols significantly increased SDNN time series compared to the sham condition. Exploratory analysis revealed SDNN increases during the second 5 min of stimulation with the 10 Hz/500 µs protocol and during the first 5 min of recovery with the 10 Hz/250 µs and 25 Hz/100 µs protocols. No significant changes in the RMSSD were found for any protocol. Conclusions: TaVNS is safe in healthy adults, and specific frequency and pulse width combinations can acutely enhance overall HRV, as reflected in SDNN, but do not affect vagally mediated HRV, as reflected by the RMSSD. Future studies should optimize taVNS parameters to maximize physiological and clinical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise training improves heart rate variability, and evidence suggests it can mitigate the detrimental effects of stress. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between surgeons' physical activity habits and their stress, assessed as heart rate variability, at the start of surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS This multispecialty prospective cohort study included surgeons from fourteen cardiac, endocrine, digestive, gynecologic, orthopedic, thoracic, and urologic surgical departments of four university hospitals. Surgeons wore accelerometers 24/7 from 1 November 2020 to 31 December 2021 to quantify the mean daily step counts and daily sedentary time for 7 days prior to each operation. RMSSD, the root mean square of successive differences between normal heart beats, is a heart rate variability (HRV) metric that reflects cardiac vagal tone. We evaluated RMSSD during the first 5 minutes of surgeries performed over five 15-day periods. Data were analyzed using a multivariable linear mixed model with a random effect for surgeons. RESULTS We analyzed 722 surgeries performed by 37 surgeons (median age = 47 (IQR 42-55); 29 (78.4%) male). On average (SD), surgeons walked 9762 (2447) steps and were sedentary 391 (102) minutes daily. The model showed a positive relationship between steps and cardiac vagal tone, with an increase in lnRMSSD (0.028, 95% CI 0.003 to 0.053, P = 0.026) for every 1000 more steps per day, but not for sedentary behavior. Surgeon professors presented lower lnRMSSD (-0.437, -0.749 to -0.126, P = 0.006), as did surgeons who spent less total time operating over the study period (-0.337, -0.646 to -0.027, P = 0.033), compared to their counterparts. CONCLUSIONS Higher daily step counts the week before surgery were associated with increased cardiac vagal tone, indicating lower stress levels at the beginning of surgery. This relationship highlights the influence of physical activity on surgeons' stress in the operating room.

Abstract
Exergame has become widely popular and offers great levels of cognitive demands, thus may facilitate cognitive benefits. In addition, researchers have proposed that cardiac autonomic function, assessed via heart rate variability (HRV), is associated with cognitive executive function. However, few exergame training studies have investigated this relationship. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 10-week exergame training on executive function and HRV in middle-aged and older adults. Ninety-one participants were randomly assigned to either an exergame training group (63.73 ± 4.48 years) or a control group (62.46 ± 4.77 years). The training program was 50 min per session, twice per week for 10 weeks. The control group was instructed to maintain their usual lifestyle. All participants completed questionnaires and received assessments of executive functions and electrocardiography at baseline and postintervention. Results revealed significant group-by-time interaction effects for the three indices of the digit span test and the total initiation time of the Tower of London task with better postintervention performances achieved by the exergame group. The 6 min walk test also improved significantly in the exergame group but not in the control group. No significant change in HRV was observed for both groups. There were significant correlations between HRV and digit span test scores. Our results suggest that the 10-week exergame training program was effective in improving executive functions of working memory, inhibitory control, and planning ability as well as aerobic fitness in middle-aged and older adults. Moreover, HRV was associated with improved executive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Herbal plants may contribute to reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Yerba mate (YM) emerges as a candidate to improve endothelial function, hemodynamics, and heart rate variability (HRV) due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially decreasing cardiovascular risk. Therefore, studies are needed to assess the effect of YM ingestion on these parameters. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of acute ingestion of YM infusion (hot or cold) on endothelial function, hemodynamics, and HRV. METHODS AND RESULTS In this crossover randomized clinical trial, 13 participants (18-40 years old) of both genders were evaluated under three conditions: control (water), cold YM infusion, and hot YM infusion. The primary outcome was endothelial function assessed through flow-mediated dilation (FMD), with the secondary outcomes including blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and HRV. Parameters were evaluated before and after intervention (40' and 80'). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed an intervention effect on FMD (%) (p < 0.05), with both cold and hot YM associated to higher FMD% compared to control, although no time or time*intervention effects were found. ANOVA also showed a time effect on BP, HR, and HRV time and frequency domains variables (p < 0.05), though no time*intervention or intervention effect was observed. CONCLUSION We did not find acute effects of YM infusion on endothelial function, central hemodynamic, or autonomic parameters in healthy adults. These results were not impacted by the temperature of YM. Further studies should assess the dose-response of acute and chronic YM ingestion on endothelial function. Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) has shown potential as a tool for monitoring thermal strain, but there is limited data to support its efficacy in older adults during prolonged heat exposures. We compared HRV between young (19-31 years, n = 20) and older (61-78 years, n = 39) adults during 9 h of heat exposure (40 °C, 9% RH). We also explored whether heart rate (HR) and/or HRV could be used to distinguish older adults who achieved elevated thermal strain, defined as either (1) an increase in core temperature >1.0 °C (occurring in 39%, 15/39) or (2) a reduction in systolic blood pressure >10 mm Hg (occurring in 67%, 26/39). Percentage of age-predicted maximal HR and percentage of heart rate reserve (HRR) were higher, whereas standard deviation of normal RR intervals, the square root of the mean of squared differences between successive RR intervals (RMSSD), high frequency power (HF), and cardiac vagal index (CVI) were lower in older compared to young adults during heat exposure (P ≤ 0.004). In older adults, increases in core temperature were correlated with percentage of age-predicted maximal HR, percentage of HRR, RMSSD, and CVI (P ≤ 0.031), whereas changes in systolic blood pressure were not significantly associated with HR or HRV indices (P ≥ 0.327). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that HR and HRV indices had generally poor ability to identify older adults with elevated thermal strain (area under the curve ≤0.65). Age-related differences in HRV, consistent with vagal withdrawal among older adults, remained during daylong heat exposure, but marked heterogeneity of response likely contributed to HRV providing limited discriminatory value in identifying changes in core temperature or blood pressure in older adults.

Abstract
The physiological impact of walking in nature was quantified via continuous heart rate variability (HRV), pre- and post-walk saliva cortisol measures, and self-reported mood and mindfulness scores for N = 17 participants who walked "The Green Road" at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. For N = 15 of the participants, HRV analysis revealed two main groups: group one individuals had a 104% increase (mean) in the root mean square standard deviation (RMSSD) and a 47% increase (mean) in the standard deviation of NN values (SDNN), indicating an overall reduction in physiological stress from walking the Green Road, and group two individuals had a decrease (mean) of 42% and 31% in these respective HRV metrics, signaling an increase in physiological stresses. Post-walk self-reported scores for vigor and mood disturbance were more robust for the Green Road than for a comparable urban road corridor and showed that a higher HRV during the walk was associated with improved overall mood. Saliva cortisol was lower after taking a walk for all participants, and it showed that walking the Green Road elicited a significantly larger reduction in cortisol of 53%, on average, when compared with 37% of walking along an urban road. It was also observed that the order in which individuals walked the Green Road and urban road also impacted their cortisol responses, with those walking the urban road before the Green Road showing a substantial reduction in cortisol, suggesting a possible attenuation effect of walking the Green Road first. These findings provide quantitative data demonstrating the stress-reducing effects of being in nature, thus supporting the health benefit value of providing access to nature more broadly in many settings.

Abstract
The proposition of a minimal dose of resistance training (RT) to elicit health benefits, encompassing physiological and psychological aspects, has garnered attention. While empirical investigations have demonstrated the efficacy of low-volume RT protocols in inducing adaptations such as enhanced strength and functional capacity, further exploration of the effects of this paradigm across a broader spectrum of variables is warranted. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of minimal dose RT on strength and functional capacity, cardiac autonomic modulation, and hemodynamic parameters in menopausal women. Twenty-six women were randomly assigned to the training (TG: 63.2 ± 9.3 years) or control group (CG: 59.3 ± 7.6 years). Anthropometric measurements, strength and functional performance tests, cardiac autonomic assessment, and hemodynamic parameters were performed before and after four weeks of intervention. The TG performed the minimum dose RT twice weekly for four weeks (2 sets of 8-12 repetitions in three dynamic exercises, plus three 1-min isometric planks), and the CG had a weekly meeting with lectures and stretching. Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures was applied to each variable. Regarding time comparisons, there was a significant increase for LniRR (F = 4.78; ω2 = 0.046; p = 0.04), one repetition maximum (1RM) bench press (F = 8.06; ω2 = 0,013; p = 0.01), and 1RM leg press (F = 17.3; ω2 = 0,098; p < 0.01). There was a group*time interaction only for the index LnRMSSD (F = 5.11; ω2 = 0.042; p = 0.03), and 1RM bench press (F = 9.52; ω2 = 0,016; p = 0.01). No between-group main effect for any variable was found. The minimal dose RT protocol improved muscle strength, while cardiac autonomic and hemodynamic variables, as well as functional capacity, remained stable over 4 weeks in menopausal women.

Abstract
Bedrest as an experimental paradigm or as an in-patient stay for medical reasons has negative consequences for cardiovascular health. The effects of severe inactivity parallel many of the changes experienced with natural aging but over a much shorter duration. Cardiac function is reduced, arteries stiffen, neural reflex responses are impaired, and metabolic and oxidative stress responses impose burden on the heart and vascular systems. The effect of these changes is revealed in studies of integrative function. Aerobic fitness progressively deteriorates with bedrest and tolerance of upright posture is rapidly impaired. In this review we consider the similarities of aging and bedrest-induced cardiovascular deconditioning. We concur with many recent clinical recommendations that early and regular mobility with upright posture will reduce likelihood of hospital-associated disability related to bedrest.

Abstract
In modern soccer, fitness and fatigue monitoring tools tend to be focused on noninvasive, time-efficient and player-friendly measures. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been suggested as an effective method for monitoring training response and readiness to perform. However, there is still a lack of consensus on HRV monitoring when it comes to soccer. Thus, this scoping review aims to map existing evidence on HRV in professional and semiprofessional soccer settings, and to identify knowledge gaps to inform future research directions. A search of databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar) according to the PRISMA-ScR statement was employed. Studies were screened for eligibility on inclusion criteria: (1) HRV was among the topics discussed in the article; (2) adult professional or semiprofessional soccer players were involved in the study; (3) both male and female participants; (4) no geographical area exclusion; (5) articles published in English; and (6) article full text available. The search of the selected databases revealed 8456 records. The titles and abstracts of all articles were retrieved for screening of eligibility, leaving 30 articles for further consideration. Following screening against set criteria, a total of 25 studies were included in this review, the sample size of which ranged from 6 to 124 participants. The participants in the included studies were professional and semiprofessional soccer players, interviewed clubs staff, and practitioners. Along with other monitoring strategies, morning vagally mediated HRV analysis via (ultra)short-term orthostatic measurements may be an efficient way to assess training adaptations and readiness to perform in professional and semiprofessional soccer players. Further research is required to make definitive recommendations.

Abstract
This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters associated with the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving healthy adults (aged ≥ 18 years) were included. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCO databases to identify relevant studies. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed using the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Sixteen RCTs with a total of 623 participants were selected for the final analysis. The analysis showed that exercise training improved the standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) (SMD: 0.58 (0.16, 1.00); p = 0.007), the root mean square of successive differences in heart period series (RMSSD) (SMD: 0.84 (0.36, 1.31); p = 0.0005), and the absolute power of high-frequency band (HF) (SMD: 0.89 (0.27, 1.51); p = 0.005) parameters compared to the control group. Analysis of the moderator variables showed that the effect of exercise on HRV indices may be influenced by sex, age, and type of exercise used, specifically in HF band, absolute power of low-frequency band (LF), and LF/HF ratio parameters. Despite the limited number of existing RCTs related to the subject, the results suggest that exercise training enhances HRV parameters associated with vagal-related activity (RMSSD and HF) and both sympathetic and parasympathetic activities (SDNN). This study overcomes the lack of meta-analyses on the effects of exercise training on autonomic modulation among healthy adults and may bridge the gap in understanding the potential physiological underpinnings of the acknowledged positive health benefits of exercise.

Abstract
Both physical inactivity and disruptions in the gut microbiome appear to be prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Engaging in physical activity could present a novel nonpharmacological strategy for enhancing the gut microbiome and mitigating the adverse effects associated with microbial dysbiosis in individuals with CKD. This narrative review explores the underlying mechanisms through which physical activity may favorably modulate microbial health, either through direct impact on the gut or through interorgan crosstalk. Also, the development of microbial dysbiosis and its interplay with physical inactivity in patients with CKD are discussed. Mechanisms and interventions through which physical activity may restore gut homeostasis in individuals with CKD are explored.

Abstract
Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) plays a crucial role in managing patients who have undergone coronary intervention (CI) following acute myocardial infarction. While water-based exercise is gaining recognition as an exercise modality in this patient population, its impact on the subgroup of older adults remains unexplored. In this post hoc analysis, we investigated the effects of water-based exercise on adults older than 60 years undergoing CR after CI, comparing it to land-based exercise and a control group. In total, 45 patients aged over 60 participated in 14-day exercise programs, featuring two daily 30-min sessions. We assessed exercise capacity (VO2peak), vascular function (flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD)), heart rate variability (HRV), and blood markers (Interleukins 6, 8, and 10, P-Selectin, ICAM, and High-sensitivity CRP) before and after CR. VO2peak in the water-based group improved significantly after CR in comparison with the land-based group: 1.35 kg/mL/min (95% CI [0.20-2.50], p = 0.022). The significant difference between water-based and land-based groups was observed in several HRV parameters: Total power -1129.20 ms2 (95% CI [-1951.92--306.49], p = 0.008); peak LF 0.04 Hz (95% CI [0.00-0.08], p = 0.036); SD1 -9.02 millisecond (95% CI [-16.86--1.18], p = 0.025); and SD2 -19.71 ms (95% CI [-35.08--4.34], p = 0.013). FMD and blood markers did not vary significantly based on the exercise group. These findings suggest that short-term water-based CR may have potential as an alternative to traditional land-based CR, improving VO2peak and cardiorespiratory fitness among adults over 60 years undergoing CR after CI.

Abstract
Currently, there is limited evidence regarding various neurophysiological responses to strength exercise and the influence of the adopted practice schedule. This study aimed to assess the acute systemic effects of snatch training bouts, employing different motor learning models, on skill efficiency, electric brain activity (EEG), heart rate variability (HRV), and perceived exertion as well as mental demand in novices. In a within-subject design, sixteen highly active males (mean age: 23.13 ± 2.09 years) randomly performed snatch learning bouts consisting of 36 trials using repetitive learning (RL), contextual interference (blocked, CIb; and serial, CIs), and differential learning (DL) models. Spontaneous resting EEG and HRV activities were recorded at PRE and POST training bouts while measuring heart rate. Perceived exertion and mental demand were assessed immediately after, and barbell kinematics were recorded during three power snatch trials performed following the POST measurement. The results showed increases in alpha, beta, and gamma frequencies from pre- to post-training bouts in the majority of the tested brain regions (p values ranging from < 0.0001 to 0.02). The CIb model exhibited increased frequencies in more regions. Resting time domain HRV parameters were altered following the snatch bouts, with increased HR (p < 0.001) and decreased RR interval (p < 0.001), SDNN, and RMSSD (p values ranging from < 0.0001 to 0.02). DL showed more pronounced pulse-related changes (p = 0.01). Significant changes in HRV frequency domain parameters were observed, with a significant increase in LFn (p = 0.03) and a decrease in HFn (p = 0.001) registered only in the DL model. Elevated HR zones (> HR zone 3) were more dominant in the DL model during the snatch bouts (effect size = 0.5). Similarly, the DL model tended to exhibit higher perceived physical (effect size = 0.5) and mental exertions (effect size = 0.6). Despite the highest psycho-physiological response, the DL group showed one of the fewest significant EEG changes. There was no significant advantage of one learning model over the other in terms of technical efficiency. These findings offer preliminary support for the acute neurophysiological benefits of coordination-strength-based exercise in novices, particularly when employing a DL model. The advantages of combining EEG and HRV measurements for comprehensive monitoring and understanding of potential adaptations are also highlighted. However, further studies encompassing a broader range of coordination-strength-based exercises are warranted to corroborate these observations.

Abstract
The objective of this review was to give an overview on the current knowledge on the neural mechanisms of cardiovascular regulation during acute exercise and the autonomic adaptations brought about by chronic exercise, that is, exercise training. Evidence derived mainly from human studies, which supports the contribution of the different control mechanisms, namely the centralcommand, the reflex drive from active muscles and the arterial baroreflex, with the attendant modifications in autonomic nervous system activity, in determining the acute cardiovascular responses to exercise are discussed, along with some controversial issues and evolving concepts in exercise physiology. In particular, data that show how the various neural mechanisms involved in cardiovascular regulation during exercise are differently modulated by factors related to the muscular activity being performed, such as the type and intensity of exercise and the size of the active muscle masses are presented, stressing the plasticity of the neural network. Thereafter, the clinical implications pertaining neural cardiovascular adaptations to exercise training are presented and discussed, in the context of cardiac diseases. In particular, I will summarize a series of investigations performed in our laboratory that utilized a new training methodology and different exercise formats to quantify the training load in cardiac patients. The way by which individualized exercise training doses affects the autonomic nervous system and the cardiorespiratory adaptations is highlighted.

Abstract
Recent evidence suggests that the autonomic nervous system can contribute to memory consolidation during sleep. Whether fluctuations in cardiac autonomic activity during sleep following physical exercise contribute to the process of memory consolidation has not been studied. We assessed the effects of a non-rapid eye movement (NREM) nap following acute exercise on cardiac autonomic regulation assessed with heart rate variability (HRV) to examine if HRV influences memory processes. Fifty-six (59% female) healthy young adults (23.14 ± 3.74 years) were randomly allocated to either the exercise plus nap (ExNap, n = 27) or nap alone (NoExNap, n = 29) groups. The ExNap group performed a 40-minute moderate-intensity cycling, while the NoExNap group was sedentary prior to learning 45 neutral pictures for a later test. Subsequently, participants underwent a 60-minute NREM nap while measuring EKG, followed by a visual recognition test. Our results indicated that heart rate did not significantly differ between the groups (p = .243), whereas vagally mediated HRV indices were lower in the ExNap group compared to the NoExNap group (p < .05). There were no significant differences in sleep variables between the groups (p > .05). Recognition accuracy was significantly higher in the ExNap group than in the NoExNap group (p = .027). In addition, the recognition accuracy of the ExNap group was negatively associated with vagally mediated HRV (p < .05). Pre-nap acute exercise appears to attenuate parasympathetic activity and to alter the relationship between memory and cardiac autonomic activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare the effects of block periodized training and training adapted to the menstrual cycle (MC) phases on endurance performance, cardiovascular parameters, recovery, and MC-related symptoms in active females. METHODS Fourteen naturally menstruating, moderately trained females (age: 24±3 years; BMI: 22.3±2.7) were randomized into an intervention (INT) and a control (CON) group. Throughout an 8-week intervention period, both groups participated in a polarized training program. In the INT, the training sessions were adapted to the MC with higher training loads within the mid and late follicular phase. Before and after the intervention maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), velocity and heart rate at ventilatory thresholds one and two (vVT1, vVT2, hrVT1, hrVT2), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (sBP, dBP), root mean square of successive RR interval differences (RMSSD), standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and the premenstrual assessment form (PAF) were assessed. RESULTS There were no significant time × group interaction effects in all physiological parameters (VO2max: P=0.890; vVT1: P=1.000; hrVT1: P=0.464; vVT2: P=0.356; hrVT2: P=0.762 sBP: P=0.948; dBP: P=0.203; RMSSD: P=0.257; SDNN: P=0.241; PWV: P=0.818), or psychological parameters (PAF: P=0.745). CONCLUSIONS Tailoring a polarized training program to the MC did not augment training responses compared to a regular training program in active females. However, a substantial portion of the training intervention in the CON was coincidentally matched to the MC.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to use a network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare the effects of aerobic training (AT), resistance training (RT), combined training (CBT), and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on adult heart rate variability (HRV). Methods We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, the Web of Science, Wanfang Data, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure to identify randomized controlled trials on the effects of exercise on HRV in adults. The search was conducted from the outset of these databases to April 2023. Two reviewers independently screened the retrieved articles, extracted raw data from the relevant studies, and assessed the possible risk of bias in the included studies. Results The NMA showed that HIIT had the greatest effect on the low-frequency (LF) power/high-frequency (HF) power ratio, standard deviation of normal-normal intervals (SDNN), and root mean square of successive differences between adjacent normal-to-normal intervals (RMSSD) (surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) = 99.75%, 98.7%, and 84.9%); CBT had the greatest effect on the LF power (SUCRA = 66.3%); RT had the greatest effect on the HF power (SUCRA = 72.5%). Conclusions Our NMA and SUCRA ranking results suggest that in adults, HIIT is the most effective exercise modality in improving the SDNN, RMSSD, and LF/HF power ratio; RT for the HF power; CBT for the LF power. Any NMA conducted in the future must fully explore the effects of different exercise modalities on HRV in adult subgroups of different ages and genders. Abstract
Traditional cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC) based on the Fourier transform shares an inherent trade-off between temporal and frequency resolutions with fixed window designs. Therefore, a cross-wavelet cardiorespiratory coupling (CRC) method was developed to highlight interwave cardiorespiratory dynamics and applied to evaluate the age effect on the autonomic regulation of cardiorespiratory function. The cross-wavelet CRC visualization successfully reflected dynamic alignments between R-wave interval signal (RR intervals) and respiration. Strong and continuous CRC was shown if there was perfect temporal coordination between consecutive R waves and respiration, while CRC becomes weaker and intermittent without such coordination. Using real data collected on electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiratory signals, the heart rate variability (HRV) and CRC were calculated. Subsequently, comparisons were conducted between young and elderly individuals. Young individuals had significantly higher partial time and frequency HRV indices than elderly individuals, indicating stronger control of parasympathetic regulation. The overall coupling strength of the CRC of young individuals was higher than that of elderly individuals, especially in high-frequency power, which was significantly lower in the elderly group than in the young group, achieving better results than the HRV indices in terms of statistical significance. Further analyses of the time-frequency dynamics of CRC indices revealed that the coupling strength was consistently higher in the high-frequency (HF) band (0.15-0.4 Hz) in young participants compared to elderly individuals. The dynamic CRC between respiration and HRV indices was accessible by integrating the cross-wavelet spectrum and coherence. Young participants had a significantly higher level of CRC in the HF band, indicating that aging reduces vagus nerve modulation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The deep breathing test (DBT) is a sensitive test of cardiovagal function. The aim of this study was to explore associations between physical activity and sedentary time, measured by accelerometer, and autonomic function, using DBT. METHODS In the Swedish Cardio-Pulmonary bioImage Study, men and women aged 50-64 were randomly invited from the general population. A total of 4325 subjects who underwent DBT and assessment of physical activity and sedentary time by accelerometery were included. ECG files from 1-min DBT were used to calculate measures of respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA; expiration-inspiration (E-I) difference and E/I ratio], heart rate variability [HRV; root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), standard deviation of heart rates and mean circular resultant]. Low RSA and HRV was defined as the lowest 10% in the population. RESULTS For accelerometer-assessed physical activity, there were significant associations between high percentage of sedentary time and low E/I (p < 0.01), and low RMSSD (p < 0.01) in an age- and sex-adjusted model, and between percentage of sedentary time and low RMSSD (p = 0.04) in a risk factor-adjusted model. Low RMSSD was less common in those with a high percentage of moderate to vigorous physical activity (p = 0.04, after risk-factor adjustment). These associations became non-significant when further adjusting for heart rate. CONCLUSION We report associations between degree of physical activity and indices of autonomic dysfunction in a large population. The relationships were no longer significant after adjustments for heart rate, indicating that the relationship between physical activity and cardiovagal function partly is accounted for by reduced heart rate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High sedentary time (ST) and low physical activity may increase cardiovascular risk, potentially though cardiac-autonomic dysregulation. This study investigated associations of statistically exchanging device-measured ST and physical activity with measures of cardiac-autonomic regulation in previously pregnant women. METHOD This cross-sectional, secondary analysis included 286 women (age = 32.6 ± 5.7 years; 68% white) measured 7-15 years after delivery. ST and light (LPA), moderate (MPA), vigorous (VPA), and moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA) intensity physical activity were measured by ActiGraph GT3X. ST was further partitioned into long (≥ 30 min) and short (< 30 min) bouts. MVPA was also partitioned into long (≥ 10 min) and short (< 10 min) bouts. Cardiac-autonomic regulation was assessed by heart rate variability (HRV) (resting heart rate, natural log transformed standard deviation of normal R-R intervals [lnSDNN], natural log-transformed root mean square of successive differences [lnRMSSD]) from a 5-min seated ECG. Progressive isotemporal substitution models adjusted for confounders. Sensitivity analyses removed women with related underlying medical conditions and who did not meet respiration rate criteria. RESULTS Initial analyses found no significant associations with HRV when exchanging 30 min of ST and physical activity (p > 0.05). Yet, replacing long- and short-bout ST with 30 min of long-bout MVPA yielded significantly higher (healthier) lnRMSSD (B = 0.063 ± 0.030 and B = 0.056 ± 0.027, respectively; both p < 0.05). Sensitivity analyses strengthened these associations and yielded further associations of higher lnSDNN and lnRMSSD when replacing 30 min of short-bout MVPA with equivalent amounts of long-bout MVPA (B = 0.074 ± 0.037 and B = 0.091 ± 0.046, respectively). CONCLUSION Replacing ST with long-bout MVPA is a potential strategy to improve cardiac-autonomic function in previously pregnant women.

Abstract
Following a stressful life event, there is considerable variation in how individuals respond and adapt. Multiple models of risk and resilience show that adverse childhood experiences may be associated with an individual's response to stress later in life. While there is considerable support that early adversity can sensitize the stress response system and lead to adverse outcomes later in life, there is mounting evidence that in adolescence and young adulthood, certain biological predispositions to stress may be associated with resilience in the context of subsequent stressors. In this study, we evaluated how individual differences in vagally mediated heart rate variability moderated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and grief among a sample of individuals experiencing a stressful life event (i.e., spousal bereavement) over time. Data were collected at approximately 3, 4.5, and 6.5 months after the death of a spouse (n = 130). Heart rate variability moderated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and grief symptoms over time (b = -0.03, p < .001), such that among individuals with more severe experiences of childhood maltreatment, those with higher heart rate variability had a faster recovery from grief than those with low heart rate variability. This research highlights an overall pattern of resilience among older adult's following spousal bereavement, as well as the relationships between childhood maltreatment, heart rate variability, and differential responses to grief following the loss of a spouse. Abstract
PURPOSE Time spent closer to maximal effort during exercise is a potent stimulus for cardiorespiratory adaptations. The primary purpose was to determine which high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) protocol provided the greatest physiological stimulus by comparing time spent ≥ 90% peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak) and heart rate reserve (HRR) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) in response to 3 HIIE protocols and the exercise standard of care, moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE). A secondary purpose was to assess protocol preference. METHODS Fifteen patients with CAD (6 females, 67 ± 6 years) underwent measurements of V̇O2 and heart rate during MICE and three HIIE protocols all performed on a treadmill. The HIIE protocols included one with long intervals (4 × 4-min), short intervals (10 × 1-min), and an adapted version of the 4 × 4 [Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Protocol, (TRIP)]. Time spent ≥ 90% V̇O2peak and HRR were compared. RESULTS Time spent ≥ 90% V̇O2peak was higher during 4 × 4 (6.3 ± 8.4 min) vs. MICE (1.7 ± 3.9 min; P = 0.001), while time spent ≥ 90% HRR was higher during 4 × 4 (6.0 ± 5.3 min) vs. MICE (0.1 ± 0.2 min; P < 0.001) and 10 × 1 (0.7 ± 0.8 min; P = 0.016). TRIP had similar responses as 10 × 1 and MICE. The 10 × 1 was the most preferred protocol and the 4 × 4 was the least preferred protocol. CONCLUSION Longer intervals (4 × 4) provided the greatest physiological stimulus compared to the exercise standard of care and shorter intervals. However, this protocol was least preferred which may impact exercise adherence. Although the physiological stimulus is important to maximize training adaptations, exercise preferences and attitudes should be considered.

Abstract
Introduction: As the number of COVID-19 cases begin to diminish it is important to turn our attention to any long-term issues that may be associated with a prior infection. Cardiovascular defects have been noted following prior SARS-CoV-2 infections. However, less is known about how a previous infection alters the cardiovascular response to exercise. Further, differences may exist during exercise between previously SARS-CoV-2 positive individuals who had symptoms (symptomatic) relative to those who did not have symptoms (asymptomatic). We hypothesized that previously symptomatic (S) COVID-19 recoveries have an altered cardiovascular response to acute exercise relative to both control (CON; never infected), and previously COVID-19 positive asymptomatic (AS) individuals. Methods: Twenty-seven subjects (CON = 9; AS = 9; S = 9) underwent 30 min of submaximal treadmill exercise. During exercise, blood pressure was recorded on the brachial artery every 5 min and 3-lead electrocardiography was measured continuously. Indirect indicators of autonomic nervous system health: heart rate variability and blood pressure variability were measured during each session. Baseline mean arterial pressure (MAP) was taken prior to exercise in seated, standing and supine positions. Results: Blood pressure was similar (p > 0.05) amongst all three groups. There were no differences between average heart rate (HR; CON = 104 ± 4 BPM vs AS = 118 ± 6 BPM vs. S = 112 ± 3 BPM), mean arterial pressure (MAP; CON = 108 ± 4 mmHg vs. AS = 105 ± 13 mmHg vs. S = 108 ± 7 mmHg) or oxygen consumption (VO2) between groups during a bout of exercise. However, the standard deviation of the inter beat intervals of normal sinus beats, a measure of heart rate variability (HRV) (CON = 138 ± 2.8 m vs. AS = 156 ± 6 m vs. S = 77.7 ± 11 m; p < 0.05) and blood pressure variability (BPV; CON = 5.18 ± 1.1 vs. AS = 12.1 ± 0.88 mmHg vs. S = 10.2 ± 10.7 mmHg; p < 0.05) were different in our S group. Further, when HRV was assessed in the frequency domain the very low frequency was different during exercise in the S group relative to the other groups. Discussion: Collectively, these data suggest that a previous symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection may alter heart rate and blood pressure regulation during exercise.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine if the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptives (OC) influence responses to acute orthostatic stress and if these factors are clinically relevant to the diagnosis of initial orthostatic hypotension (iOH). METHODS Young, healthy women were recruited, including OC users (n = 12) and non-users (NOC; n = 9). Women were tested during the low hormone (LH; placebo pills; days 2-5 natural cycle) and high hormone (HH; active dose; days 18-24 natural cycle) menstrual phases. Changes in mean arterial pressure, cardiac output, heart rate, the 30:15 heart rate ratio and cerebrovascular resistance indices within 30 s of standing were examined. RESULTS There were no effects of OC or menstrual cycle on hemodynamic responses during standing (all p>0.05). In the LH phase, OC users had a greater fall in mean middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAV) compared to NOC (p<0.05). However, this was reversed in the HH phase, where OC users had a reduced fall in mean MCAV (p<0.05). Interestingly, 8 women (OC and NOC) had drops in systolic/diastolic blood pressure meeting the criteria for iOH, and 7 of those 8 women displayed this drop in a single phase of the menstrual cycle. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that chronic versus acute OC use (i.e., long-term use observed via LH phase versus short-term use observed via HH phase) have opposing effects on cerebral blood velocity during standing. Further, our results highlight that multiple assessments across the cycle may be necessary to accurately diagnose iOH, as most women met the diagnostic criteria during a single menstrual phase.

Abstract
Prehypertensive offspring of hypertensive parents are strongly linked to pathological processes of hypertension in later life. It is observed that young adults with high blood pressure (BP) have increased arterial stiffness, which is linked to autonomic anomalies. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of combined resistance and aerobic exercise training on BP, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baP-WV), and heart rate variability (HRV) in prehypertensive young men with hypertensive parents. Thirty prehypertensive males aged 19.6±1.2 years were randomly assigned to either a combined exercise training group (CBT, n=15) or no exercise group (CON, n=15). The CBT group performed combined exercise for 8 weeks, 3 times per week. BP, baP-WV, HRV, peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), and muscle strength were measured before and after the exercise intervention. Systolic BP (-5.1 mmHg, 3.9% decrease, P<0.05), diastolic BP (-3.9 mmHg, 6.1% decrease, P<0.01), mean arterial pressure (-4.2 mmHg, 4.7% decrease, P<0.05), baPWV (-0.4 m/sec, 3.5% decrease, P<0.01), standard deviation of all RR intervals (+58.5% increase, P<0.05) and very low frequency (VLF) (+34.6% increase, P<0.01), VO2peak (+11.7% increase, P<0.01) and one-repetition maximum leg press (+30.3% increase, P<0.01) were significantly improved in the CBT group after 8 weeks of training versus the CON group. Additionally, a reduction in baPWV was associated with an increase in the VLF power of HRV (r=0.72, P<0.01). These findings indicate that the combined training improves BP, arterial stiffness, vagal activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and lower-body muscle strength in prehypertensive offspring of hypertensive parents.

Abstract
PURPOSE To quantify associations between self-recorded heart rate variability (HRV) profiles and various health and lifestyle markers in young adults. METHODS Otherwise healthy volunteers (n = 40, 50% male) recorded 60-s, post-waking HRV with a cost-free mobile application in supine and standing positions for 7 days. The 7-day average and coefficient of variation (CV, reflects daily fluctuation) for the mean RR interval and root mean square of successive differences (LnRMSSD) were assessed. 7-day sleep duration and physical activity profiles were characterized via wrist-worn accelerometer. Subsequent laboratory assessments included aerobic fitness ([Formula: see text]O2peak) and markers of cardiovascular, metabolic, and psychoemotional health. Associations were evaluated before and after [Formula: see text]O2peak adjustment. RESULTS Bivariate correlations (P < 0.05) demonstrated that higher 7-day averages and/or lower CV values were associated with higher activity levels and superior cardiovascular (lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure [BP] and aortic stiffness [cf-PWV]), metabolic (lower body fat percentage, fasting glucose, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C]), and psychoemotional health (lower perceived stress) markers, with some variation between sexes and recording position. In males, associations between HRV parameters and cf-PWV remained significant following [Formula: see text]O2peak adjustment (P < 0.05). In females, HRV parameters were associated (P < 0.05) with numerous cardiovascular (systolic and diastolic BP, cf-PWV) and metabolic (fasting glucose and LDL-C) parameters following [Formula: see text]O2peak adjustment. CONCLUSIONS Higher or more stable supine and standing HRV were generally associated with superior health and lifestyle markers in males and females. These findings lay groundwork for future investigation into the usefulness of self-recorded ultra-short HRV as a health-promoting behavior-modification tool in young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the evidence of increased levels of rumination and reduced heart rate variability (HRV) in depression, whether these measures can be considered early indicators of vulnerability to depression has yet to be investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate both levels of rumination and resting HRV in individuals with familial risk for depression that is the most reliable risk factor for the disorder. METHODS Rumination and vagally-mediated HRV were assessed using the Ruminative Response Scale and a smartphone-based photoelectric volumetric pulse wave assay, respectively, in 25 individuals who had family history of depression (but did not report current depressive symptoms), 15 individuals who reported depressive symptoms (but had no family history of depression), and 25 controls (without depressive symptoms and family history of depression). RESULTS Individuals with depressive symptoms and those with a family history of depression were characterized by higher levels of rumination and lower cardiac vagal control than controls. LIMITATIONS Given the small sample size, this study should be used to design larger confirmatory studies; the cross-sectional nature of the study does not allow discussing the results in terms of cause-effect relationships. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested that individuals at risk of developing depression, also in absence of depressive symptoms, are defined by defective self-regulation capacity that may lead to future depression episodes. Increased ruminative thoughts and reduced HRV may represent early indicators of vulnerability to depression. Effective prevention programs designed to reduce rumination and/or increase HRV may reduce the risk of developing a full-blown depressive episode.

Abstract
Objective Recent studies suggest that lower resting heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with elevated vulnerability to depressive rumination. In this study, we tested whether increases in HRV after HRV-biofeedback training are accompanied by reductions in rumination levels. Materials and methods Sixteen patients suffering from depression completed a 6-week HRV-biofeedback training and fourteen patients completed a control condition in which there was no intervention (waitlist). The training included five sessions per week at home using a smartphone application and an ECG belt. Depressive symptoms and autonomic function at rest and during induced rumination were assessed before and after each of the two conditions. We used a well-established rumination induction task to provoke a state of pervasive rumination while recording various physiological signals simultaneously. Changes in HRV, respiration rate, skin conductance, and pupil diameter were compared between conditions and time points. Results A significant correlation was found between resting HRV and rumination levels, both assessed at the first laboratory session (r = -0.43, p < 0.05). Induction of rumination led to an acceleration of heart rate and skin conductance increases. After biofeedback training, resting vagal HRV was increased (p < 0.01) and self-ratings of state anxiety (p < 0.05), rumination (p < 0.05), perceived stress (p < 0.05), and depressive symptoms (QIDS, BDI; both p < 0.05) were decreased. In the control condition, there were no changes in autonomic indices or depressive symptomatology. A significant interaction effect group x time on HRV was observed. Conclusion Our results indicate that a smartphone-based HRV-biofeedback intervention can be applied to improve cardiovagal function and to reduce depressive symptoms including self-rated rumination tendencies.

Abstract
(1) Background: Aquatic exercise training is a relatively understudied exercise modality in patients with CAD; with the present study, we sought to compare the impact of short-term 14-day water- and land-based exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV). (2) Methods: We randomized 90 patients after a recent CAD event (myocardial infarction and/or revascularization within 2 months prior to inclusion) to either (i) water-based or (ii) land-based exercise training (14 days, two 30 min sessions daily), or (iii) controls. Before and after the intervention period, all participants underwent 20 min 12-channel high-resolution ECG recordings with off-line HRV analysis, including conventional linear time- and frequency-domain analysis (using the Welch method for fast-Fourier transformation), and preselected non-linear analysis (Poincaré plot-derived parameters, sample entropy, and the short-term scaling exponent α1 obtained by detrended fluctuation analysis). (3) Results: Eighty-nine patients completed the study (mean age 60 ± 8 years; 20 % women). We did not detect significant differences in baseline- or age-adjusted end-of-study HRV parameters, but aquatic exercise training was associated with a significant increase in the linear LF/HF parameter (from 2.6 [1.2–4.0] to 3.0 [2.1–5.5], p = 0.046) and the non-linear α1 parameter (from 1.2 [1.1–1.4] to 1.3 [1.2–1.5], p = 0.043). (4) Conclusions: Our results have shown that a short-term 14-day aquatic exercise training program improves selected HRV parameters, suggesting this mode of exercise is safe and may be beneficial in patients with CAD.

Abstract
This study examined the alterations of heart rate variability (HRV) following iso-duration resistance (RES) and sprint-interval (SIE) exercises by comparing with that of non-exercise control (CON) in 14 non-obese (NOB) and 15 obese (OB) young men. Time and frequency domain measures as well as non-linear metrics of HRV were assessed before and immediately after exercise, and during every 20 min until 120 min post exercise. The variables during the first 4 hrs of actual sleep time at night, and the period of 12-14 hrs post exercise were also measured. All trials were scheduled at 20:00. It was found that RES and SIE attenuated the HRV in both NOB and OB (P <0.05), and the attenuated HRV restored progressively during subsequent recovery. Although the changes in HRV indices among various time points during the recovery period and its interaction across RES, SIE and CON were not different between NOB and OB, the restoration of the declined HRV indices to corresponding CON level in the two exercise trials in OB appeared to be sluggish in relative to NOB. Notwithstanding, post-exercise HRV that recorded during actual sleep at night and during 12-14 hrs apart from exercise were unvaried among the three trials in both groups (P>0.05). These findings suggest that obesity is likely to be a factor hindering the removal of exercise-induced cardiac autonomic disturbance in young men. Nonetheless, the declined HRV following both the RES and SIE protocols were well restored after a resting period of ~10 hrs regardless of obesity. Abstract
This study aimed to investigate whether the heart rate variability index (TLHRV) during five ball-drills could be used to quantify training load (TL) in collegiate basketball players. Ten elite male college basketball athletes (18.2 ± 0.4 years) were recruited to perform five ball-drills (1V1, 2V2, 3V3, 4V4, and 5V5) which lasted 10 min and varied in intensity. During each drill, TLHRV, training impulse (TRIMP), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), speed, and distance were recorded by Firstbeat, Foster’s RPE scale, and SiMi Scout. The correlation (Spearman’s and Pearson’s correlation coefficient), reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient, ICC), and agreement (Bland-Altman plots) among TLHRV, TRIMP, RPE, speed, and distance were examined. TLHRV was significantly correlated with TRIMP (r = 0.34, p = 0.015) and RPE (r = 0.42, p = 0.002). TLHRV was significantly correlated with training intensity (r = 0.477, p = 0.006) but not with volume (r = 0.272, p = 0.056). TLHRV and TRIMP, RPE showed significant intraclass relationships (ICC = 0.592, p = 0.0003). Moreover, TLHRV differentiated basketball drills of equal volume and varying intensity. We concluded that TLHRVmay serve as an objective and rational measure to monitor TL in basketball players.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare blood pressure and heart rate variability responses in physically active men after performing resistance training sessions with rest intervals of 1 min, 2 min and 3 min. Eighteen men (age, 21.6±1.1 years; body mass, 74.1±8.1 kg; body height, 175.3±7.1 cm) who performed 180min of physical activity per week participated in this study. After determining the 15RM loads for the squat, bench press, bent-over row and deadlift, participants performed a resistance training session. Participants performed three resistance training protocols in randomized counterbalanced order. Each experimental protocol comprised different rest intervals between sets of resistance training exercises (1min, 2min or 3min). During each experimental session, participants performed three sets with a 15RM load. Blood pressure and heart rate variability were measured before and for 2h after each session. The results demonstrated a greater blood pressure (p<0.05) reduction with a longer rest interval. There was no statistically significant difference in heart rate variability changes between groups. These results indicate that 2min and 3min rest intervals while using a 15RM load provide the best stimulus for a blood pressure reduction response after a resistance training session. Our findings suggest that strength and conditioning professionals should prescribe 2min or 3min rest intervals when resistance training is performed with a 15RM load if the aim is to obtain an acute reduction in blood pressure after a resistance training session.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of preventive aerobic exercise training on sympathovagal function, cardiac function, and DNA repair capacity in a preclinical model of doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiomyopathy. Forty male Wistar-Kyoto rats were allocated into four groups (n = 10/group): D (DOX-treated) and C (controls) remained sedentary, and DT (DOX-trained) and CT (control-trained) performed aerobic training 4 days/week, during 4 weeks before exposure to DOX (4 mg/kg/week during 4 weeks) or saline solution. We evaluated cardiac function (echocardiography), hemodynamic and sympathovagal modulation (artery-femoral cannulation), cardiac troponin T levels, and DNA repair capacity (comet assay). Exercise training preserved ejection fraction (D: − 14.44% vs. DT: − 1.05%, p < 0.001), fractional shortening (D: − 8.96% vs. DT: − 0.27%, p = 0.025) and troponin T levels (D: 6.4 ± 3.6 vs. DT: 2.8 ± 1.7 ng/mL, p = 0.010). DOX increased heart rate variability (C: 27.7 ± 7.9 vs. D: 7.5 ± 2.2 ms2, p < 0.001) and induced sympathovagal dysfunction (LF/HF, C: 0.37 ± 0.15 vs. D: 0.15 ± 0.15, p = 0.036) through exacerbation of sympathetic function (LF, C: 0.22 ± 0.01 vs. D: 0.48 ± 0.24 Hz, p = 0.019). Peripheral mononuclear blood cells of DT animals presented lower residual DNA damage (D: 43.4 ± 8.4% vs. DT: 26 ± 3.4%, p = 0.003 after 1 h). Cardioprotective effects of preventive aerobic exercise training are mediated by preservation of sympathovagal function and improvement of DNA repair capacity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Abstract
Purpose: This study explored the changes in blood pressure and cardiac autonomic modulation after training programs differin in set configuration. Methods: Thirty-nine individuals were randomly assigned to a traditional, rest-redistribution, or control group. Throughout five weeks, the traditional and rest-redistribution groups performed 10 sessions of four exercises with the same load, number of repetitions, and total rest time, but with different inter-set rest duration and frequency (traditional group: 4 sets of 8 repetitions, 10 repetition maximum load, 5 min rest between sets and exercises; rest-redistribution group: 16 sets of 2 repetitions, 1 min rest between sets, 5 min rest between exercises). Heart rate and heart rate recovery were recorded during each training session, and heart rate variability, baroreflex sensitivity and effectiveness, blood pressure, and blood pressure variability were evaluated at rest bedore and after the interventions. Results: During the sessions, traditional sets entailed greater peak heart rate compared to rest-redistribution (P = .018) but mean heart rate, minimum heart rate, and heart rate recovery were similar between training programs (P >.05). Baroreflex effectiveness was reduced after the traditional intervention (P = .013). No changes were detected for the rest of the cardiovascular variables obtained at rest after intervention (P > .05). Conclusions: Despite some differences in heart rate response during exercise, neither traditional nor rest-redistribution resistance training protocols produced changes in cardiac autonomic modulation, sympathetic vasomotor tone, and cardiac baroreflex sensitivity of young healthy active individuals. However, traditional sets affected the baroreflex effectiveness.

Abstract
Background The cardiovagal function can be assessed by quantification of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) during a deep breathing test. However, population studies of RSA and coronary atherosclerosis are lacking. This population‐based study examined the relationship between RSA during deep breathing and coronary atherosclerosis, assessed by coronary artery calcium score (CACS). Methods and Results SCAPIS (Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study) randomly invited men and women aged 50 to 64 years from the general population. CACS was obtained from computed tomography scanning, and deep breathing tests were performed in 4654 individuals. Expiration–inspiration differences (E‐Is) of heart rates were calculated, and reduced RSA was defined as E‐I in the lowest decile of the population. The relationship between reduced RSA and CACS (CACS≥100 or CACS≥300) was calculated using multivariable‐adjusted logistic regression. The proportion of CACS≥100 was 24% in the lowest decile of E‐I and 12% in individuals with E‐I above the lowest decile (P<0.001), and the proportion of CACS≥300 was 12% and 4.8%, respectively (P<0.001). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for CACS≥100 was 1.42 (95% CI, 1.10–1.84) and the adjusted OR for CACS≥300 was 1.62 (95% CI, 1.15–2.28), when comparing the lowest E‐I decile with deciles 2 to 10. Adjusted ORs per 1 SD lower E‐I were 1.17 (P=0.001) for CACS≥100 and 1.28 (P=0.001) for CACS≥300. Conclusions Low RSA during deep breathing is associated with increased coronary atherosclerosis as assessed by CACS, independently of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Cardiovagal dysfunction could be a prevalent and modifiable risk factor for coronary atherosclerosis in the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Workloads are increasing and could cause mental stress, e.g., in the form of subjective effort reward imbalance (ERI) and overcommitment (OC). The heart rate variability (HRV) is a valid method for objective monitoring of workload. The aim of this project is to systematically evaluate the literature on HRV as an objective indicator for mental stress in individuals with different levels of ERI or OC. METHODS A systematic literature review examining HRV of employees in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement for reporting systematic reviews was performed. Electronic databases used were PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane Libary, Scopus and Web of Science, PsyInfo, Psyndex, and Livio. Only articles from 2005 to 2021 were included. Inclusion criteria were case-control studies, intervention studies, cross-sectional studies, or longitudinal studies with different levels of ERI and/or OC, >10 participants in each group, measurement of 24h HRV by using Holter ECG or chest belt, and full-text in English or German language. The methodological quality was evaluated by using a modified STARD for HRV. RESULTS Five studies matched the inclusion criteria by using HRV (24-h ECG) with a different HRV analysis at day and night. It showed an adaptation of HRV with higher ERI or OC with reduced parasympathetic HRV parameters, but the studies were not comparable. CONCLUSIONS There is a need for occupational health studies that examine strains and stress of different employees with predominantly mental stress. The well-established parasympathetic mediated HRV parameters seem to be suitable parameters to objectify the stress.

Abstract
The value of heart rate variability (HRV) in the fields of health, disease, and exercise science has been established through numerous investigations. The typical mobile-based HRV device simply records interbeat intervals, without differentiation between noise or arrythmia as can be done with an electrocardiogram (ECG). The intent of this report is to validate a new single channel ECG device, the Movesense Medical sensor, against a conventional 12 channel ECG. A heterogeneous group of 21 participants performed an incremental cycling ramp to failure with measurements of HRV, before (PRE), during (EX), and after (POST). Results showed excellent correlations between devices for linear indexes with Pearson's r between 0.98 to 1.0 for meanRR, SDNN, RMSSD, and 0.95 to 0.97 for the non-linear index DFA a1 during PRE, EX, and POST. There was no significant difference in device specific meanRR during PRE and POST. Bland-Altman analysis showed high agreement between devices (PRE and POST: meanRR bias of 0.0 and 0.4 ms, LOA of 1.9 to -1.8 ms and 2.3 to -1.5; EX: meanRR bias of 11.2 to 6.0 ms; LOA of 29.8 to -7.4 ms during low intensity exercise and 8.5 to 3.5 ms during high intensity exercise). The Movesense Medical device can be used in lieu of a reference ECG for the calculation of HRV with the potential to differentiate noise from atrial fibrillation and represents a significant advance in both a HR and HRV recording device in a chest belt form factor for lab-based or remote field-application.

Abstract
Mental and physical (MAP) training targets the brain and the body through a combination of focused-attention meditation and aerobic exercise. The following feasibility pilot study tested whether 6 weeks of MAP training improves mental health outcomes, while enhancing discrimination learning and heart rate variability (HRV) in a group of women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other stress-related conditions. Participants were assigned to training (n = 18) or no-training control (n = 8) groups depending on their ability and willingness to participate, and if their schedule allowed. Training sessions were held once a week for 6 weeks with 30 min of meditation followed by 30 min of aerobic exercise. Before and after 6 weeks of training, participants completed the Behavioral Pattern Separation Task as a measure of discrimination learning, self-report questionnaires of ruminative and trauma-related thoughts, depression, anxiety, and perceived stress, and an assessment of HRV at rest. After training, participants reported fewer ruminative and trauma-related thoughts, fewer depressive and anxiety symptoms, and less perceived stress (p's < 0.05). The positive impact on ruminative thoughts and depressive symptoms persisted 6 months after training. They also demonstrated enhanced discrimination of similar patterns of information (p < 0.05). HRV did not change after training (p > 0.05). Combining mental and physical training is an effective program for enhancing mental health and aspects of cognition in women living with HIV, although not necessarily through variance in heart rate.

Abstract
There is a scarcity of evidence on the association between shift work, sleeping parameters, heart rate variability (HRV), and chronotype, i.e., morningness and eveningness. The aims of this study were to 1) compare participants with different chronotypes (morning (M), evening (E), or neither (N)) in terms of their total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and HRV parameters, taking their age into account, and 2) examine whether self-reported work-related stress, the length of the working career and years performing shift work affect this association. The participants of the study were home care workers working in two shifts in one municipality in Eastern Finland (N = 395). Of these, 52 females (mean age 42.78 y, SD 12.92 y) completed the study questionnaire and participated in physiological measurements. Several sleep-related parameters were assessed (total sleep time, sleep efficiency, number of awakenings, and length of awakening) and indices of autonomic nervous system based on HRV were calculated. The participants worked in two shifts: a morning shift (7:00-15:00 h) and an evening shift (14:00-21:30 h). All these parameters were assessed during the night before the first work shift (N1), the night before the second work shift (N2), the night before the final work shift (N3), and the night before the first day off work (N4). According to the results, 21.2% of the participants were M-types, 17.3% were E-types, and 61.5% were N-types. On average, the participants had been in working life for 18.8 years and performing shift work for 13.7 years. On night N3, E-types had a significantly shorter total sleep time and spent less time in bed compared to M- and N-types. The total sleep time of M-type and N-type participants was on average 66 minutes and 82 minutes longer, respectively, when compared to E-types on night N3. There were no statistically significant differences in actigraphy-based sleep quality parameters between M-, N-, and E-types on nights N1, N2, and N4. Our results together indicate that M- and N-type individuals may have better sleep quality than E-types, which was also reflected in HRV parameters. Further research with longitudinal study design and workplace interventions is needed to determine how the chronotype can be optimally and individually utilized to improve the health and well-being of morning-type and evening-type people. This is particularly important for both younger and older workers entering the workforce to support healthier and longer working lives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We recently described an association between reduced heart rate variability (HRV) and illness burden in bipolar disorder (BD) using a novel Illness Burden Index (IBI). We aimed to further characterize this association by using spectral analyses to assess whether the IBI is also associated with autonomic imbalance in BD patients. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 53 participants with BD wore a device for 24 h to assess association between HRV spectral measures and the IBI or each of its components (age of onset, number and type of previous episode(s), duration of the most severe episode, history of suicide attempts or psychotic symptoms during episodes, co-morbid psychiatric disorders, and family history). We ran both unadjusted models and models controlling for age, sex, years of education, marital status, BMI, pharmacotherapy, and baseline functional cardiovascular capacity. RESULTS HRV low-frequency (LF) normalized values were almost twice as high as published in healthy controls. Higher IBI was associated with higher LF and lower High Frequency (HF) values, resulting in a higher LF/HF ratio, indicating an increased sympathetic tone. Four individual components of the IBI were similarly associated with measures of increased sympathetic tone: earlier age of onset, number of depressive episodes, co-morbid anxiety disorders, and family history of suicide. Adjusted and unadjusted models had similar results. LIMITATIONS Our models used mean LF and HF and do not consider their dynamic variations over 24 h or phase of the illness. CONCLUSIONS Burden of illness is associated with increased sympathetic tone in patients with BD, putting them at risk for arrythmias and sudden death.

Abstract
Objectives This study examined the influences of the volume of all-out sprint-interval exercise (SIE) on acute post-exercise heart rate variability (HRV) recovery. Methods HRV recovery following a session of (i) 2 × 30-s SIE (SIE2), (ii) 4 × 30-s SIE (SIE4), and (iii) non-exercising control (CON) were compared in 15 untrained young males. Time domain [standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals, root mean square of successive R-R differences] and frequency domain [low frequency (0.04–0.14 Hz), high frequency (0.15–0.40 Hz)] measures of HRV were assessed every 20 min for 140 min after the exercise, and every hour during the first 4 h of actual sleep time at immediate night. All trials were scheduled at 19:00. Results In comparison to CON, both SIE2 and SIE4 attenuated the HRV markedly (p < 0.05), while the declined HRV restored progressively during recovery. Although the sprint repetitions of SIE4 was twice as that of SIE2, the declined HRV indices at corresponding time points during recovery were not different between the two trials (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, the post-exercise HRV restoration in SIE2 appeared to be faster than that in SIE4. Regardless, nocturnal HRV measured within 10 h following the exercise was not different among the SIE and CON trials (p > 0.05). Conclusion Such findings suggest that the exercise volume of the SIE protocol may be a factor affecting the rate of removal of the cardiac autonomic disturbance following the exercise. In addition, rest for ∼10 h following either session of the SIE protocol appears to be appropriate for the cardiovascular system to recover.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging impairs physiological processes in the autonomic nervous, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems which are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Heart rate variability (HRV), the beat-to-beat variations of successive heartbeats, is an indicator of cardiac autonomic control and cardiovascular health. Physical activity has beneficial effects on cardiovascular health. However, no review has been conducted to summarize the effects of different exercise modalities on HRV in older adults. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to summarize the effects of endurance, resistance, coordinative, and multimodal exercise interventions on resting HRV and secondary health factors in healthy older adults aged 60 years in average and over. METHODS Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Ovid, and Cochrane Library) were searched for eligible studies published between 2005 and September 8th, 2020. Two reviewers independently assessed the studies for potential inclusion. Outcome measures were changes in resting HRV indices, baroreflex sensitivity, blood pressure, body fat, body mass, body mass index, cardiac output, distance in the six-minute walking test, stroke volume, total peripheral resistance, and VO2 max or VO2 peak from pre to post intervention. The methodological quality of the final data set was assessed using two scales (TESTEX and STARDHRV). This review was registered in PROSPERO: CRD42020206606. RESULTS The literature search retrieved 3991 articles, of which 13 were included in the review. Five studies used multimodal, three studies endurance, two studies resistance, two studies coordinative, and one study used an endurance and a resistance training intervention. The majority of the studies revealed significant positive effects on cardiac autonomic control, except for the resistance training interventions. All exercise modalities improved secondary health factors. The methodological quality assessment revealed a few criteria to improve the quality of and comparability between studies. CONCLUSION This systematic review revealed beneficial effects on cardiac autonomic control in healthy older adults through endurance, coordinative, and multimodal training but not through resistance training. Secondary health factors improved after all types of physical interventions. Future investigations should more thoroughly adhere to methodological standards of exercise interventions and ECG recording for the assessment of autonomic regulation.

Abstract
Autonomic cardiac function can be indirectly detected non-invasively by measuring the variation in microtiming of heart beats by a method known as heart rate variability (HRV). Aerobic training for sport is associated with reduced risk for some factors associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but effects on autonomic function in different athlete types are less known. To compare cardiac autonomic modulation using a standard protocol and established CVD risk factors in highly trained intercollegiate athletes competing in aerobic, explosive, and cross-trained sports. A total of 176 college athletes were categorized in distinct sports as explosive (EA), aerobic (AA), or cross-trained (mixed) athletes. Eight different HRV measures obtained at rest were compared across training type and five health factors: systolic (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body weight (BW), sex, and race. All athletic types shared favorable HRV measures that correlated with low CVD risk factors and indicated normal sympathovagal balance. A significant correlation was reported between DBP and pNN50 (% RR intervals > 50 ms) (β = -0.214, p = 0.011) and between BW and low-frequency (LF) power (β = 0.205, p = 0.006). Caucasian and African American athletes differed significantly (p < 0.05) with respect to four HRV variables: pNN50, HF power, LF power, and LF/HF ratios. Explosive, aerobic and mixed athletes had similar cardiovascular and autonomic HRV results in all eight HRV parameters measured. All athletes reported LF and pNN50 values that were significantly correlated with two CVD risk factors: DBP and BW. Compared with Caucasian teammates, African American athletes demonstrated lower LF/HF and higher pNN50, indicating an even more favorable resting sympathovagal activity and healthy CV function.

Abstract
This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to summarize the existing literature on the effects of different exercise interventions on cardiac autonomic control and secondary health factors. Resting heart rate variability (HRV) was used as indicator of cardiac autonomic control. Secondary factors were related to factors that contribute to cardiovascular health. Studies examining the effects of endurance, resistance, multimodal, or coordinative training interventions in healthy participants aged between 45 and 60 years old on average were considered. The methodological quality of the studies was examined using two assessment scales (TESTEX and STARDHRV). PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020206606. The literature review retrieved eight studies fulfilling all inclusion criteria. Cardiac autonomic control and cardiovascular health improved after endurance and multimodal interventions. Resistance training had no significant impact on HRV or any secondary health factor. Coordinative exercise interventions showed inconclusive results regarding HRV but showed significant improvements in secondary health factors. The quality assessment tools revealed some methodological and reporting deficits. Despite the small number of studies, we suggest endurance and multimodal interventions including aerobic exercises for the enhancement of cardiac autonomic control and the reduction of cardiovascular risk in middle-aged adults. Further studies need to be conducted to examine the long-term effects of exercise in the midlife period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The workloads of emergency physicians are severe. The prevalence of burnout among emergency physicians is higher than with other physicians or compared to the general population. The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is a valid method for objective monitoring of workload. The aim of this paper is to systematically evaluate the literature on heart rate variability as an objective indicator for mental stress of emergency physicians. METHODS A systematic literature review examining heart rate variability of emergency physicians in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement for reporting systematic reviews was performed. PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane Libary, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases were used. The methodological quality was evaluated by using a modified STARD for HRV. RESULTS Two studies matched the inclusion criteria by using HRV between alert intervention and two other studies were considered that used HRV in other question areas. It showed an adaptation of HRV under stress. The studies were not comparable. CONCLUSIONS There is a need for occupational health studies that examine strains and stress of emergency physicians. The well-established parasympathetic mediated HRV parameters seem to be suitable parameters to objectify the stress.
