Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) pollution leads to reduced crop yields and poses a threat to human health, making it an important environmental and agricultural safety issue. Selenium [Se(IV)] has been shown to alleviate Cd stress in plants; however, the mechanisms underlying Se-mediated protection against Cd toxicity remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological and molecular mechanisms of Se(IV)-alleviated Cd toxicity in strawberry plants through physio-biochemical and transcriptomic analyses. Our results showed that foliar spraying with Se(IV) increased photosynthetic efficiency, reduced Cd-induced oxidative damage by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities and soluble sugar contents, thereby improving Cd stress tolerance. Transcriptomic profiling revealed 477 common differentially accumulated transcripts (DATs), predominantly enriched in transporter activity, oxidoreductase function, and antioxidant-related processes. Notably, seven key genes involved in Cd efflux, chelation, secondary metabolite transport and nutrient uptake (FvPCR9-like, FvCBP-like, FvWAT1-like, FvMOT1, FvYW_6g02140, FvNRT2.1 and FvZIP8) exhibited opposite expression patterns under Se(IV) and Cd treatments. Supplementation with Se(IV) also modulated phytohormone signaling, nitrogen metabolism and carbon metabolism pathways, providing a multi-dimensional approach to mitigating Cd-induced physiological disruptions. This study provides novel insights into Se(IV)-mediated Cd stress adaptation, and offers promising strategies for developing low-Cd-accumulating crops, addressing critical environmental and agricultural challenges associated with heavy metal contamination.

Abstract
The mining industry in China plays a pivotal role in economic development but also leads to severe environmental issues, particularly heavy metal pollution in soils. Heavy metal pollution significantly impacts soil microbial communities due to its persistence and long-term residual effects. We assessed changes in microbial diversity, community structure, and assembly mechanisms in selenium-impacted soils. This study investigates the impacts of selenium (Se) and other heavy metals on soil microbial communities in selenium-rich mining areas using full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Our results showed that Se and other heavy metal contamination significantly altered microbial community composition, favoring metal-tolerant phyla such as Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota and Firmicutes, while reducing the abundance of sensitive groups like Acidobacteriota and Chloroflexi. Microbial diversity decreased as Se and other heavy metal concentrations increased. Mantel test analysis revealed that soil total potassium (TK), soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and several other metals, including zinc, niobium, titanium (Ti), manganese, rubidium, barium, potassium, cobalt, gallium (Ga), Se, chromium (Cr), vanadium, and copper were significantly and positively correlated with microbial community composition across all soil samples. Random forest analysis showed that soil TK and multiple elements [Cr, Ti, nickel (Ni), Ga and Se] were the most important predictors of bacterial diversity, emphasizing the role of multiple elements in shaping microbial communities. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that Se and other heavy metal contamination reduced network complexity and stability, with high Se-contaminated soils exhibiting fragmented microbial networks. Community assembly was primarily driven by drift in control soils, whereas dispersal limitation became more prominent in Se-contaminated soils due to heavy metal toxicity. These findings highlight the ecological consequences of heavy metal pollution on microbial communities and offer valuable insights for effective soil management and remediation strategies.

Abstract
Prunella vulgaris, an essential component of traditional Chinese medicine, is suitable for growing in soil with a pH value ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. However, it is primarily cultivated in acidic soil regions of China, where its growth is frequently compromised by acidic stress. Selenium (Se) has been recognized for its potential to enhance stress tolerance in plants. However, its role in acid-stress-induced oxidative stress is not clear. In this study, the effects of varying Se concentrations on the growth and quality of P. vulgaris under acidic stress were investigated. The results showed that acid stress enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities, non-enzymatic antioxidant substances, and osmolyte content, accompanied by an increase in oxidant production and membrane damage. Furthermore, it decreased the photosynthetic capacity, inhibited root and shoot growth, and diminished the yield of P. vulgaris. In contrast, exogenous application of Se, particularly at 5 mg L-1, markedly ameliorated these adverse effects. Compared to acid-stressed plants, 5 mg L-1 Se treatment enhanced superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione peroxidase activities by 150.19%, 54.94%, 43.43%, and 45.55%, respectively. Additionally, soluble protein, soluble sugar, and proline contents increased by 11.75%, 23.32%, and 40.39%, respectively. Se application also improved root architecture and alleviated membrane damage by reducing hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, malondialdehyde, and electrolyte leakage levels. Furthermore, it significantly enhanced the photosynthetic capacity by elevating pigment levels, the performance of PSI and PSII, electron transfer, and the coordination of PSI and PSII. Consequently, plant growth and spica weight were significantly promoted, with a 12.50% increase in yield. Moreover, Se application upregulated key genes involved in flavonoid and phenolic acid metabolic pathways, leading to elevated levels of total flavonoids, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, rosmarinic acid, and hyperoside by 31.03%, 22.37%, 40.78%, 15.11%, and 20.84%, respectively, compared to acid-stressed plants. In conclusion, exogenous Se effectively alleviated the adverse effects of acid stress by improving the antioxidant system, growth, and photosynthetic capacity under acid stress, thus enhancing the yield and quality of P. vulgaris.

Abstract
Perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) is an annual herbaceous plant whose seed oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). This oil exhibits various health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, lipid-lowering, hypoglycemic, neuroprotective and immunomodulatory activities. In addition, incorporating perilla oil into a diet can effectively increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiota. However, perilla oil is prone to oxidation, which reduces its nutritional value and lowers its bioavailability. To address these issues, encapsulation technologies such as emulsions, oleogels, liposomes and microcapsules have been employed, showing promising results. Nonetheless, further research is needed to fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms of perilla seed oil's health effects, validate its benefits through large-scale human clinical trials and optimize encapsulation techniques. Future investigations should also explore the synergistic effects of combining perilla seed oil with other functional components and its role in modulating gut microbiota to achieve comprehensive health benefits.

Abstract
Sedum plumbizincicola is a promising hyperaccumulator for heavy metal phytoremediation. It grows in heavy metal polluted soil and stores specific endophyte resources with heavy metal tolerance or growth promotion characteristics. In this study, the endophyte communities of S. plumbizincicola, growing naturally in the field (two former mining locations and one natural location) were investigated, and their structure and function were comparatively studied. The bioaccumulation and translocation characteristics of cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) in S. plumbizincicola were also evaluated. The results showed that the heavy metal pollution reduced the richness and diversity of endophyte communities. Soil pH and Cd concentration could be the key factors affecting the composition of the endophyte community. Co-occurrence network analysis identified that 22 keystone taxa belonging to Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, Myxococcota and Proteobacteria were positively correlated with Cd bioaccumulation and translocation. The predicted endophyte metabolic pathways were enriched in physiological metabolism, immune system, and genetic Information processing. These findings may help to understand how endophytes assist host plants to enhance their adaptability to harsh environments, and provide a basis for further exploration of plant-endophyte interactions and improvement in phytoremediation efficiency.
