Abstract
BACKGROUND Few previous studies have established Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) cut-off values using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and applied these values to compare predictors of anhedonia between clinical and nonclinical groups. AIMS To determine the optimal cut-off values for the SHAPS and use them to identify predictors of anhedonia in clinical and nonclinical groups in Taiwan. METHOD This cross-sectional and correlational study used convenience sampling to recruit 160 patients from three hospitals and 412 students from two universities in northern Taiwan. Data analysis included receiver operating characteristic curve, univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS The optimal SHAPS cut-off values were 29.5 and 23.5 for the clinical and nonclinical groups, respectively. Moreover, two-stage analysis revealed that participants in the clinical group who perceived themselves as nondepressed, and participants in the nonclinical group who did not skip classes and whose fathers exhibited higher levels of care and protection were less likely to attain the cut-off values. Conversely, participants in the nonclinical group who reported lower academic satisfaction and were unwilling to seek help from family or friends were more likely to attain the cut-off values. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the importance of optimal cut-off values in screening for depression risk within clinical and nonclinical groups. Accordingly, the development of comprehensive, individualised programmes to monitor variation trends in SHAPS scores and relevant predictors of anhedonia across different target populations is crucial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Income inequality is theorized to impact health. However, evidence among adolescents is limited. This study examined the association between income inequality and health-related school absenteeism (HRSA) in adolescents. METHODS Participants were adolescents (n = 74,501) attending secondary schools (n = 136) that participated in the 2018-2019 wave of the COMPASS study. Chronic (missing ≥3 days of school in the previous 4 weeks) and problematic (missing ≥11 days of school in the previous 4 weeks) HRSA was self-reported. Income inequality was assessed via the Gini coefficient at the census division (CD) level. Multilevel modeling was used. RESULTS Greater income inequality was associated with a higher likelihood of chronic and problematic HRSA (chronic: OR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.30; problematic: OR = 1.29, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.50). Increased predicted probabilities for Problematic HRSA were observed at greater degrees of income inequality among students who identified as either white, black, Latinx, or mixed, while protective associations were observed among students who identified as Asian or other. No associations were modified by gender. CONCLUSION Income inequality demonstrated unfavorable associations with HRSA, which was modified by racial identity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Anxiety and depression are internalizing mental disorders often commencing in childhood and manifesting in adolescence. The Revised Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) is an internationally widely used standardized diagnostic tool, but the German version has only been validated in a pediatric chronic pain sample; normative data are not available. The aim of this study is to test its reliability (internal consistency) and validity (factorial, convergent, known-groups) in a representative German school sample and to provide norm data. METHODS Data were collected from N = 1562 German schoolchildren (Mage = 12.2; SDage = 2.33; range 8-17 years; 52.4% girls). RESULTS Cronbach's α ranged from 0.73 to 0.96 for the total and the six subscales (five anxiety and one depression). Confirmatory factor analysis showed the 6-factor model had acceptable to good model fit with CFI = 0.93, TLI = 0.93, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.05, which was better than 1- and 2-factor models. The (sub)scales correlated moderate to high negatively with health-related quality of life (-0.31 ≤ τ ≤ -0.51; p < 0.001) and positively with functional impairment (0.31 ≤ τ ≤ 0.48; p < 0.001). Mean scores of anxiety and depression scales were significantly higher in girls and partly in adolescents. CONCLUSION Findings provide support for the good psychometric properties of the German RCADS in a community sample.

Abstract
The upper secondary school dropout rate is a challenge in many western countries, and measures have been taken to prevent dropout. The dropout rate in Norway is stable but is the highest among the northernmost counties. The aim of this study is to explore the strategies employed by upper secondary school teachers and their collaborators to prevent dropout from upper secondary school among Sami youth in northern Norway. This study is based on three focus group interviews with teachers, advisers, nurses, and counsellors in the Sami areas of northern Norway. The thematic analysis identified two main strategies, namely tracking the student and giving the student time. A transparent environments, cultural competence, and interdisciplinary collaboration were identified as prerequisites for successfully implementing the two strategies to prevent dropout from upper secondary school.

Abstract
BACKGROUND School feeding programs (SFP) in low-income countries are designed to provide food to vulnerable school children to create optimal educational and health conditions for learners. Ethiopia scaled up the implementation of SFP in Addis Ababa. Yet, the utility of this program in terms of school absenteeism has not been monitored thus far. Hence, we aimed at evaluating the effect of the SFP on school performance of primary school adolescents in Addis Ababa, Central Ethiopia. METHODS A prospective cohort study was carried out from 2020 to 2021 on SFP-beneficiary (n = 322) and non-SFP beneficiary (n = 322). Logistic regression models were done using SPSS version 24. RESULTS In logistic regression, unadjusted model (model 1), the school absenteeism of non-school-fed adolescents was higher by 1.84 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.28-2.64) as compared to school-fed adolescents. The odds ratio remained positive after adjusting for age and sex (model 2: aOR 1.84, 95% CI 1.27-2.65), and sociodemographic (model 3: aOR 1.84, 95% CI 1.27-2.67). In the final model, adjusted model 4, health and lifestyle, there was a significant increase in absenteeism of non-school-fed adolescents (model 4: aOR 2.37, 95% CI 1.54-3.64). The likelihood of absenteeism in female increase by 2.03 (aOR 2.03, 95% CI 1.35-3.05), whereas being in a low tertile wealth index family decreases absenteeism by (aOR 0.51, 95% CI 0.32-0.82). School feeding was negatively associated with school absenteeism. CONCLUSIONS The findings imply the need for strengthening school feeding programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is common during adolescence and is associated with adverse educational, employment, and health outcomes in later life. Digital programs are increasingly being implemented in schools to improve and protect adolescent mental health. Although digital depression prevention programs can be effective, there is limited knowledge about how contextual factors influence real-world delivery at scale in schools. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to examine the contextual factors that influence the implementation of the Future Proofing Program (FPP) from the perspectives of school staff. The FPP is a 2-arm hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation trial evaluating whether depression can be prevented at scale in schools, using an evidence-based smartphone app delivered universally to year 8 students (13-14 years of age). METHODS Qualitative interviews were conducted with 23 staff from 20 schools in New South Wales, Australia, who assisted with the implementation of the FPP. The interviews were guided by our theory-driven logic model. Reflexive thematic analysis, using both deductive and inductive coding, was used to analyze responses. RESULTS Staff perceived the FPP as a novel ("innovative approach") and appropriate way to address an unmet need within schools ("right place at the right time"). Active leadership and counselor involvement were critical for planning and engaging; teamwork, communication, and staff capacity were critical for execution ("ways of working within schools"). Low student engagement and staffing availability were identified as barriers for future adoption and implementation by schools ("reflecting on past experiences"). CONCLUSIONS Four superordinate themes pertaining to the program, implementation processes, and implementation barriers were identified from qualitative responses by school staff. On the basis of our findings, we proposed a select set of recommendations for future implementation of digital prevention programs delivered at scale in schools. These recommendations were designed to facilitate an organizational change and help staff to implement digital mental health programs within their schools. Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents with recurrent pain miss out from school more often than pain-free peers. Research has so far used cross-sectional designs, focusing on non-specific absenteeism in clinical samples. Hence, it is unknown whether estimates of absenteeism are specifically linked to the pain itself or reflects the characteristics of clinical samples. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to prospectively explore pain-related school absenteeism in a non-clinical sample, its variance and potential risk factors. METHODS This prospective study followed a cohort of 1300 Sweden-based adolescents (mean age = 16.9; 17.2% immigrants; 62.7% girls) with recurrent pain (headache, abdominal and/or musculoskeletal pain) through self-reports at two assessment points 12 months apart. RESULTS Overall, 64.2% reported any absenteeism at follow-up and about half of these (26.2%) reported frequent absenteeism. Adolescents who indicated missing school were more often girls, slightly older and had a higher overall pain burden and stressor levels. Yet, after adjusting for previous absenteeism, independent predictors were age, pain intensity, medication use and stress associated with school attendance. Further to this, immigrant status predicted frequent absenteeism. CONCLUSIONS Many adolescents with pain frequently miss out from school due to pain. Identified risk factors points at pain characteristics and coping, stressors associated with participation and advancing age. Taken together, the burden of pain and its correlates emerge earlier and escalate with increasing age hence, early interventions targeting broader domains are needed. SIGNIFICANCE This study adds substantially to the field by estimating the prevalence of pain-specific school absenteeism in a large sample of adolescents with recurrent pain in the general population using a prospective design. Furthermore, it identifies risk factors of pain-specific absenteeism from a broader context of the adolescent's life with independent predictors being the previous history of absenteeism, age, immigrant status, pain intensity, medication use and stress related to school attendance.

Abstract
Early experiences of school disengagement may serve as a warning sign for later young adult adjustment difficulties and eventually contribute to accelerated aging among Black American youth. At the same time, supportive parenting may play a protective role. Using longitudinal data from the Family and Community Health Study (FACHS), we examined psychological maladjustment (comprising depression, lack of self-regulation, and low self-esteem) as a mediator of the relationship between school disengagement and accelerated aging. We also examined the effect of supportive parenting in buffering the impact of school disengagement on adulthood outcomes by controlling for covariates. Hypotheses were examined in a sample of 386 (Mean age = 28.68; Females = 62.7%; Males = 37.3%) Black American youth who were followed into young adulthood. Path modeling was used to test hypothesized relationships. We found school disengagement, i.e., problems with school attendance, performance, and engagement, reported across ages 10-18, predicted psychological maladjustment, which, in turn, predicted accelerated aging at age 29. We also found a buffering effect for supportive parenting. No significant gender difference in the indirect effect or buffering effect was found. This study highlights the potential importance of greater attention to school disengagement to identify and potentially influence long-term health trajectories and adult outcomes for Black American youth.

Abstract
Objective School refusal (SR) in adolescence represents an important risk factor associated with adverse consequences. Although many clinical features of adolescents presenting with SR have been studied, the relationship between SR and personality styles-specifically in the help-seeking population-remains unclear. The present study aimed at investigating differences in personality style, adaptive functioning, and symptomology between Italian help-seeking adolescents who refused (SRa) and did not refuse (non-SRa) to attend school, to provide preliminary evidence of personality patterns in adolescent help-seekers presenting with SR. Method The study sample was comprised of 103 help-seeking adolescents (54 female, 49 male) aged 14-18 years. Participants were recruited during their first clinical visit and evaluated using the Shedler and Westen Assessment Procedure - Adolescent version (SWAP-A), the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D), the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), the Maniac Rating Scale (MRS), the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), the Global Functioning Social Scale (GFSS), and the Global Functioning Role Scale (GFRS). Differences in the studied variables between SRa and non-SRa were measured and a multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify possible predictive factors of SR. Results SRa presented with more anxious and depressive symptomatology and worse social functioning compared to non-SRa. With respect to personality, SRa displayed more schizoid and schizotypal characteristics and fewer adaptive and healthy personality features. Irrespective of any differences between groups, SRa were largely characterized by inhibited-self-constricted and emotionally dysregulated personality styles. Conclusions The results suggest that personality styles are clinical features that may contribute to broadening our knowledge of SR behavior and aid in the detection of SRa, also in the help-seeking population. The findings have clinical, social, and political implications for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, in both clinical and non-clinical settings. However, more data are needed on personality features to clarify their contribution to the more complex phenomenon of school absenteeism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to examine the relationships between sleep onset latency and multiple sleep-related factors of seventh and tenth graders during the transition from childhood to adolescence. METHODS Regarding sleep onset latency, we examined the short-term associations in Phase IV (2002) and long-term associations in Phase V (2005) of the Toyama Birth Cohort Study. In total, 4,673 boys and 4,694 girls in Phase IV and 2,969 boys and 3,108 girls in Phase V answered the questionnaire items regarding sleep, physical and mental health, lifestyle, socioeconomic status, and family and school factors. Considering sleep onset latency as the outcome and 13 sleep-related factors as independent variables, we calculated the odds ratio using binary logistic regression. The longitudinal study was conducted with 1,703 boys and 1,919 girls whose sleep onset latency was within 30 min in Phase IV. RESULTS The following factors were found to be related to longer sleep onset latency in the short term: sleep duration, physical activity, game time, and self-esteem in boys and sleep duration, bedroom environment, game time, abdominal pain, long-standing illness, onset of puberty, mental health difficulties, and school avoidance feelings in girls. Regarding its long-term effects, having a single parent and self-esteem in boys and breakfast, game time, long-standing illness, obesity, onset of puberty, and school avoidance feelings in girls were associated with longer sleep onset latency. CONCLUSIONS Education of adolescent health and sleep hygiene at home and school should include both short-term and long-term associations between sleep and a healthy lifestyle by gender.
