Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased emotional reactivity to stress, emotional dysregulation and sleep disturbances are interdependent trans-diagnostic processes that are present in internalising disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders. This study investigated which objective and subjective parameters of stress reactivity, sleep and emotional processing would predict symptoms of anxiety and depression in adolescents and young adults. METHODS Participants were adolescents and young adults between the ages of 14 to 21 (N = 106, 25[24 %] male, M age = 17.93). Heart rate, heart rate variability, and subjective stress levels were measured before, during and after a stress induction using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Questionnaires on internalising symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and sleep quality were used. For seven consecutive nights, objective sleep parameters were measured with a wearable device. RESULTS Heart rate and heart rate variability after (but not during) the stress induction and emotion dysregulation predicted depressive and anxiety symptoms. Lower subjective sleep quality (but not the objective sleep parameters) was associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Emotion dysregulation mediated the relationship between sleep quality and depressive symptoms. LIMITATIONS A cross-sectional design, no measurement of daily activity or naps, and only self-report measures of depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as emotion dysregulation. CONCLUSION The findings of elevated cardiovascular activation after - but not during - the stress induction and emotion dysregulation underlines problems in regulating and recovering from stress as predictors of youth internalising psychopathology. Differences between subjective and objective measures of sleep and stress reactivity suggests a role of cognitive biases in these domains.

Abstract
Sleep-related problems (SRPs) are a common precursor to anxiety disorders, especially during peri-adolescence, and may be a predictor of treatment response. However, evidence-based anxiety treatments do not alleviate SRPs to a clinically significant degree. The current study examines whether improving sleep in a sample of young adolescents previously treated for anxiety disorders can further reduce anxiety severity. Participants include 46 adolescents (65% female, ages 9-14 years) previously treated for anxiety disorders who self-selected to participate in a 6-week open trial of targeted sleep enhancement (TIGERS). Measures of parent- and child report on SRPs, and clinician-rated anxiety severity, were collected at several time points of the study: pre-, and postanxiety treatment, pre- and post-TIGERS, and at four yearly follow-ups. Two hierarchical mediation models were run using either parent- or child report on sleep. On the between-subjects level, participants with higher overall average SRPs also had higher overall anxiety severity over all time points. On the within-subjects level, participation in TIGERS was not directly associated with change in anxiety severity-however, participation in TIGERS was associated with a drop in SRPs, which was associated with a drop in anxiety severity. Improving sleep in anxious peri-adolescents further improves anxiety above and beyond anxiety treatment. Further research is needed to confirm the effects of improving sleep on clinical anxiety in a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep is a common problem in adolescents aged 14 to 18 years. Difficulties with sleep have been found to have a bidirectional link to mental health problems. OBJECTIVE This new research sought to involve young people in the co-creation of a new app, particularly those from underserved communities. The Sleep Solved app uses science-based advice to improve sleep-related behaviors and well-being. The app was developed using the person-based approach, underpinned by the social cognitive theory and the social-ecological model of sleep health. METHODS Young people (aged 14-18 y) were recruited from across the United Kingdom to contribute to patient and public involvement (PPI) activities. In partnership with our peer researcher (MHJ), we used a multitude of methods to engage with PPI contributors, including web-based workshops, surveys, think-aloud interviews, focus groups, and app beta testing. RESULTS A total of 85 young people provided PPI feedback: 54 (64%) young women, 27 (32%) young men, 2 (2%) genderfluid people, 1 (1%) nonbinary person, and 1 (1%) who reported "prefer not to say." Their levels of deprivation ranged from among the 40% most deprived to the 20% least deprived areas. Most had self-identified sleep problems, ranging from 2 to 3 times per week to >4 times per week. Attitudes toward the app were positive, with praise for its usability and use of science-based yet accessible information. Think-aloud interviews and a focus group identified a range of elements that may influence the use of the app, including the need to pay attention to language choices and readability. User experiences in the form of narrated audio clips were used to normalize sleep problems and provide examples of how the app had helped these users. CONCLUSIONS Young people were interested in using an app to better support their sleep and mental health. The app was co-created with strong links to theory- and evidence-based sleep hygiene behaviors. Future work to establish the effectiveness of the intervention, perhaps in a randomized controlled trial, would provide support for potential UK-wide rollout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is unclear whether treatment for an anxiety disorder improves sleep. This study examined baseline sleep characteristics of adolescents with an anxiety disorder, comparing weekdays and weekends, and whether there were significant improvements in sleep following cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). AIMS To improve our understanding of sleep problems in adolescents with an anxiety disorder and examine whether CBT for the treatment of the anxiety disorder improves sleep. METHOD Data was gathered from 179 participants with an anxiety disorder (11-17 years old) who had previously engaged with the out-patient child and adolescent mental health service. Baseline self-report measures of anxiety and depression symptoms, sleep patterns and experiences of insomnia were examined. Of this group, 135 participants had baseline data. A subset (n=73) had outcome data, which was used to examine changes in sleep following CBT. RESULTS At baseline, adolescents reported significantly less total sleep and more night-time waking on weekdays than weekends. Following treatment for their anxiety disorder, adolescents' weekday sleep patterns significantly improved for sleep onset latency and total sleep time, whereas weekend sleep patterns only showed improvements for sleep onset latency. No significant improvements were reported for symptoms of insomnia. CONCLUSIONS The study relied upon subjective measurement of sleep and there was no control group; however, the findings provide promising results that CBT for adolescent anxiety disorders can improve some sleep problems. Further research is needed to understand discrepancies between subjective and objective sleep, and to explore avenues for the delivery of support for sleep problems.

Abstract
Background The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has been associated with a significant increase in sleep disorders. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of restless leg syndrome (RLS) and the effect of COVID-19 on RLS during the pandemic in Korea. Methods The National Sleep Survey of South Korea 2022 was employed in this study. This study was a large population-based web survey using a structural questionnaire of a four thousand representative sample of individuals aged 20-69 years in Korea. The survey was conducted between January 2022 and February 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. RLS was diagnosed using the Korean version of the paradigm of questions for epidemiological studies of RLS. Chronic persistent RLS was defined for individuals with RLS symptoms at least twice a week. Results Six hundred forty-nine (16.2%) and 172 (4.3%) patients were classified as having RLS and chronic persistent RLS, respectively. Female sex, being employed, the presence of COVID-19 vaccine-related adverse events, decreased sleep duration, the presence of EDS, and current treatment for insomnia were significantly associated with chronic persistent RLS. Conclusion During the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of RLS and chronic persistent RLS in the adult Korean population was higher than that reported in previous studies.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of the current study was twofold: first, to determine the prevalence of anxiety-induced sleep disturbances among Argentine adolescents according to sex, and second, to identify the association between these sleep disturbances and lifestyle behaviors in this population. Methods This is a cross-sectional study with data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Argentina (2018). A total of 32,393 adolescents (aged 12–17 years; 53.4% girls) were included in the final analysis. Anxiety-induced sleep disturbances were assessed with the question “During the past 12 months, how often have you been so worried about something that you could not sleep at night?” Results The prevalence of anxiety-induced sleep disturbances was higher in girls (17.4%) than in boys (7.9%) (p < 0.001). In boys, results indicated that those who used marijuana (cannabis) (odds ratio [OR] = 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08–1.98), used amphetamine or methamphetamine (OR = 2.19, 95% CI 1.28–3.77), walked or biked to or from school (OR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.19–1.96), and spent 3 h or more in sedentary behaviors (OR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.05–1.74) were more likely to report anxiety-induced sleep disturbances. In girls, those who ate from a fast-food restaurant (OR = 1.24, 95% CI 1.05–1.47), consumed alcoholic beverages (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.19–1.75), smoked cigarettes (OR = 2.09, 95%CI 1.05–4.14), consumed any tobacco product (OR = 1.47, 95% CI 1.19–1.82), used amphetamine or methamphetamine (OR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.33–3.26), and those who spent 3 h or more in sedentary behaviors (OR = 1.32, 95% CI 1.11–1.57) were more likely to report frequent anxiety-induced sleep disturbances. Conclusion In conclusion, considerable sex differences were observed with respect to the prevalence of anxiety-related sleep disturbances and associated lifestyle aspects.

Abstract
The potential effect of early intervention for anxiety on sleep outcomes was examined in a sample of adolescents with anxiety (N = 313, mean 14.0 years, SD = 0.84, 84% girls, 95.7% Norwegians). Participants were randomized to one of three conditions: a brief or a standard-length cognitive-behavioral group-intervention (GCBT), or a waitlist control-group (WL). Interventions were delivered at schools, during school hours. Adolescents with elevated anxiety were recruited by school health services. Questionnaires on self-reported anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and sleep characteristics were administered at pre- and post-intervention, post-waitlist, and at 1-year follow-up. Adolescents reported reduced insomnia (odds ratio (OR) = 0.42, p < 0.001) and shorter sleep onset latency (d = 0.27, p < 0.001) from pre- to post-intervention. For insomnia, this effect was maintained at 1-year follow-up (OR = 0.54, p = 0.020). However, no effect of GCBT on sleep outcomes was found when comparing GCBT and WL. Also, no difference was found in sleep outcomes between brief and standard-length interventions. Adolescents defined as responders (i.e., having improved much or very much on anxiety after GCBT), did not differ from non-responders regarding sleep outcomes. Thus, anxiety-focused CBT, delivered in groups, showed no effect on sleep outcomes. Strategies specifically targeting sleep problems in adolescents should be included in GCBT when delivered as early intervention for adolescents with elevated anxiety.Trial registry Clinical trial registration: School Based Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Anxious Youth (LIST); http://clinicalrials.gov/ ; NCT02279251, Date: 11.31. 2014.
