Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health (MH) is one of the most important resources of human life, particularly during older adulthood. Self-esteem (SE) is related to mental health (MH), and loneliness may serve as a mediator in the relationship between SE and MH. However, the role of loneliness in this relationship is not well understood. This study aims to evaluate the association between SE and MH in older adults, specifically focusing on the mediating role of loneliness in this relationship. METHODS This cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in 2023 using structural equation modeling. Participants were 357 older adults selected through quota sampling from comprehensive urban healthcare centers in Urmia, Iran. Data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale, the General Health Questionnaire, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Data were analyzed using the SPSS (v. 23.0) and the SmartPLS (v. 3.0) software. RESULTS SE had a significantly weak positive association with MH (ß = 0.095; P < 0.001) and a significantly weak negative association with loneliness (ß = -0.288; P < 0.001). Additionally, loneliness had a significantly strong negative association with MH (ß = -0.632; P < 0.001). The study confirmed that loneliness acts as a mediator between SE and MH (β = -0.688, 95% CI: 0.1427, 1.2958; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Health assessments and loneliness screening programs are essential for older adults to identify symptoms early and prevent mental health issues. Governments should strengthen social connections among older adults through services and education. Urban healthcare centers can reduce loneliness by organizing community activities, encouraging pet ownership, and promoting participation in senior centers. CLINICAL TRIAL NUMBER Not applicable.

Abstract
Loneliness and low self-esteem are among the more prominent mental health problems among left-behind children, but most of the current research stays in cross-sectional surveys, with fewer studies proposing specific solutions. In addition, although the effective impact of dance interventions on loneliness and self-esteem has been demonstrated, the impact in the group of left-behind children remains under-explored. Therefore, this study validated the effectiveness of a dance intervention on loneliness and self-esteem in left-behind children through a 16-week randomised controlled trial. Stratified sampling was used to select one primary school from each of the 14 cities in Hunan Province, with a maximum of 100 children recruited from each primary school. Independent researchers used SPSS 29.0 to randomly assign the eligible 1270 participants to the Experimental group (n = 635) and Control group (n = 635) in a 1:1 ratio. The Experimental group performed 45 min of moderate-intensity dance training five times a week. The Control group maintained their original living conditions. Participants were measured three times using the Children's Loneliness Scale and Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale: baseline (T0), after 8 weeks (T1), and post-intervention (16 weeks, T2). Linear mixed-effects models for repeated measures were used to test the effects of time, group and time × group interactions. (a) The average age of the 1261 participants was 10 years (SD = 3.52), with high levels of loneliness (42.48 ± 12.04) and low levels of self-esteem (26.75 ± 6.39). (b) There was a significant negative correlation between loneliness and self-esteem among the LBC (p < 0.001, r = - 0.390). (c) After the dance intervention, the LBC's loneliness significantly decreased [F (2, 1258) = 74.516, ηp2 = 0.106, p < 0.001] and their self-esteem significantly increased [F (2, 1258) = 73.64, ηp2 = 0.104, p < 0.001]. A 16-week dance intervention is an effective strategy to improve loneliness and self-esteem in LBC. Given the acceptability and practicality of the dance intervention, it could be included in a health programme to improve loneliness and self-esteem in LBC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the mediating role of depressive symptoms in the relationship between negative life events (NLEs) and suicidality, as well as to test the moderating effect of self-esteem in the mediation model. METHODS A total of 3,003 adolescents from Han, Tibetan, and Yi ethnic groups living in Western China were included in this study. Utilizing the structural equation model, a mediation model and a moderated mediation model were constructed. RESULTS The presence of NLEs was positively associated with suicidality (β = 0.17, p < 0.001). Depressive symptoms partially mediated the relationship between NLEs and suicidality (indirect effect β = 0.19, p < 0.001). Self-esteem moderated both the antecedent and subsequent segments of the mediating paths of "NLEs → depressive symptoms → suicidality" and the direct relationship between NLEs and suicidality. Among adolescents with a low level of self-esteem, the mediating effect coefficient of depressive symptoms was higher at 0.18 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.14-0.23), in contrast to adolescents with a high level of self-esteem, where the mediating effect coefficient of depressive symptoms was 0.04 (95% CI: 0.02-0.07). CONCLUSION NLEs are directly associated with an increased risk of suicidality and indirectly related to suicidality by increasing the risk of depressive symptoms among adolescents. Self-esteem can moderate the mediating effect of depressive symptoms and the relationship between NLEs and suicidality. The intervention strategy for preventing suicidality among adolescents who have experienced NLEs should focus on reducing depressive symptoms and improving self-esteem.

Abstract
Cultural factors, such as country or continent, influence the relationship between loneliness and mental health. However, less is known about how cultural dimensions moderate this relationship during adolescence and younger adulthood, even if these dimensions manifest as country or continent differences. This study aims to examine the potential influence of Hofstede's cultural dimensions on this relationship using a three-level meta-analysis approach. A total of 292 studies with 291,946 participants aged 10 to 24 were included in this study. The results indicate that cultural dimensions, such as individualism vs. collectivism, indulgence vs. restraint, power distance, and long-term vs. short-term orientation, moderated the associations between loneliness and social anxiety, stress, Internet overuse, and negative affect. The association between loneliness and mental health was not moderated by cultural dimensions, such as masculinity and uncertainty avoidance. These findings suggest that culture's influence on the association between loneliness and mental health is based on a domain-specific mechanism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIM There is a lack of understanding of how social anxiety may affect Internet addiction among adolescents. Based on several theories, the purpose of this study was to investigate the multiple mediating roles of loneliness and coping styles in the association between social anxiety and Internet addiction in Chinese adolescents. METHODS This study used the Social Anxiety Scale, Internet Addiction Test, Loneliness Scale, and Simple Coping Style Questionnaire to investigate 1188 students in two junior high schools and senior high schools in Henan Province, China. We adopted Pearson's correlation analysis and the PROCESS Macro Model 81 in regression analysis to explore the relationships among social anxiety, loneliness, coping styles, and Internet addiction. RESULTS We found that social anxiety not only directly affects teenagers' Internet addiction, but also affects teenagers' Internet addiction through loneliness and coping styles. CONCLUSIONS These results emphasize the importance of improving social anxiety to reduce Internet addiction among adolescents. At the same time, it also emphasizes the need to reduce adolescents' loneliness and cultivating positive coping styles. In addition, this study has certain theoretical significance for teenagers' mental health and intervention studies on Internet addiction.

Abstract
Background There is an escalating concern about the rising levels of anxiety and depression among college students, especially during the post-pandemic era. A thorough examination of the various dimensions of social support and their impact on these negative emotions in college students is imperative. Aim This study aimed to determine if a perceived loss of control mediates the relationship between social support and levels of anxiety and depression among college students during the post-pandemic era. Additionally, it examined whether family socioeconomic status moderates this mediated relationship. Methods We administered an online cross-sectional survey in China, securing responses from 502 participants. The sample comprised home-isolated college students impacted by COVID-19. Established scales were employed to assess social support, anxiety, depression, perceived loss of control, and family socioeconomic status. Analytical techniques included descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and a bootstrap method to investigate mediating and moderating effects. Results Social support was found to negatively affect anxiety and depression in college students, with perceived loss of control partially mediating this relationship. In addition, family socio-economic status was shown to moderate this moderating process. Furthermore, family socioeconomic status influenced this mediation, with higher socioeconomic families exhibiting a stronger moderating effect on perceived loss of control across different dimensions of social support. Conclusion This study may help to develop strategies to mitigate the impact of anxiety and depression in the lives and studies of university students during unexpected public health crises, and to promote better mental health among college students.
