Abstract
OBJECTIVES To critically examine and synthesise the available evidence regarding the impact of assistance dogs on individuals with autism. STUDY DESIGN Mixed methods systematic review with meta-analysis of quantitative data and meta-aggregation of qualitative data. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they included participants with autism and data describing the impact, effectiveness, or participant experience with an assistance dog or a companion dog. DATA SOURCES CENTRAL, Embase, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO. DATA SYNTHESIS Fourteen studies (one randomised controlled trial, three cohort, seven cross-sectional, and three single-arm studies) were included in the meta-analysis and 13 studies (eight cross-sectional, three longitudinal, and two case studies) were included in the meta-aggregation. There was some quantitative evidence that assistance dogs may be associated with benefit, but the pooled effect sizes are similar to those associated with companion dogs. The qualitative data suggested that parents perceived a broad range of benefits of assistance dogs but may be unprepared for the challenges associated with owning an assistance dog. CONCLUSION There is a lack of compelling evidence to suggest that assistance dogs confer unique benefits for individuals with autism. The evidence base is limited and of poor quality thus the potential benefits identified need to be interpreted with caution. Interpreting the quantitative and qualitative studies together, the findings indicate many potential benefits of assistance dogs for people with autism could be achieved by a companion dog.

Abstract
Limitations in some emotional characteristics that are conceptualized in the definition of emotional intelligence can be seen among people with autism spectrum disorder. The main objective of this study is the analysis of the effectiveness of interventions directed to enhance emotional recognition and emotional regulation among this specific population. A systematic review was carried out in databases such as Psycinfo, WoS, SCOPUS, and PubMed, identifying a total of 572 articles, of which 29 met the inclusion criteria. The total sample included 1061 participants, mainly children aged between 4 and 13 years. The analyzed interventions focused on improving emotional recognition, with significant results in the identification of emotions such as happiness, sadness, and anger, although some showed limitations in the duration of these effects. The most used programs included training in facial recognition, virtual reality, and the use of new technologies such as robots. These showed improvements in both emotional recognition and social skills. Other types of interventions such as music therapy or the use of drama techniques were also implemented. However, a gender bias and lack of consistency between results from different cultures were observed. The conclusions indicate that, although the interventions reviewed seem effective, more research is needed to maximize their impact on the ASD population.

Abstract
Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) has been widely adopted as an approach to enhance the well-being of children with ASD, who often experience significant social impairments, emotional dysregulation, and other daily challenges. Given the potential variation of HAI across countries, there is a particular need to explore this phenomenon within different cultural contexts and to illuminate directions for facilitating positive HAI among children with ASD. The purpose of this review is to systematically synthesize the current knowledge of HAI as applied to children with ASD and to discuss possible variations across different cultural contexts. A systematic database search was conducted to synthesize HAI characteristics from existing studies that met the selection criteria. The results highlighted that most of the selected studies (N = 97) were conducted in Europe or the United States. The most common format of HAI identified was animal-assisted intervention, followed by pet ownership. Dogs and horses were the primary animals involved in HAI for children with ASD, while the majority of HAI occurred in home settings and at horse riding or training centres. To conclude, this review provides a more comprehensive lens for understanding the phenomenon of HAI for children with ASD across different countries and discusses cultural variations in terms of the companion animals involved, the formats, and the settings of HAI. It also offers therapeutic insights into the multicultural aspects of HAI, which may shed light on future interventions for children with ASD through HAI in more diverse settings.

Abstract
(1) Background: Animals provide many benefits in children's lives, but few studies assess the effects of animal presence-especially service dogs-in schools. This pilot study examined whether a year-long exposure to a service dog could improve facial expression recognition in adolescents with cognitive function disorders. (2) Method: Twenty-three adolescents participated: 10 with cognitive function disorders who were part of a specialized French teaching program (LUSI) that included a service dog (LUSI group), and 13 neurotypical adolescents who served as controls (not in LUSI, no service dog exposure). Participants assigned one of five facial expressions (sadness, joy, fear, neutral, anger) to images of human, dog, and cat faces at three intervals: before dog integration, at 5-8 months, and 11-14 months later (same intervals for controls). (3) Results: Identification of facial expressions of both dog (p = 0.001) and human (p = 0.01) but not cat (p > 0.05) faces by LUSI participants exposed to service dog improved with time. The performance of LUSI participants was better when they lived with various species of animals at home. Control participants' performance did not change significantly (all p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: After a school year, the presence of a service dog had helped adolescents with cognitive function disorders to better identify human and dog facial expressions.

Abstract
Introduction Early and accurate diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is crucial for effective intervention, yet it remains a significant challenge due to its complexity and variability. Micro-expressions are rapid, involuntary facial movements indicative of underlying emotional states. It is unknown whether micro-expression can serve as a valid bio-marker for ASD diagnosis. Methods This study introduces a novel machine-learning (ML) framework that advances ASD diagnostics by focusing on facial micro-expressions. We applied cutting-edge algorithms to detect and analyze these micro-expressions from video data, aiming to identify distinctive patterns that could differentiate individuals with ASD from typically developing peers. Our computational approach included three key components: (1) micro-expression spotting using Shallow Optical Flow Three-stream CNN (SOFTNet), (2) feature extraction via Micron-BERT, and (3) classification with majority voting of three competing models (MLP, SVM, and ResNet). Results Despite the sophisticated methodology, the ML framework's ability to reliably identify ASD-specific patterns was limited by the quality of video data. This limitation raised concerns about the efficacy of using micro-expressions for ASD diagnostics and pointed to the necessity for enhanced video data quality. Discussion Our research has provided a cautious evaluation of micro-expression diagnostic value, underscoring the need for advancements in behavioral imaging and multimodal AI technology to leverage the full capabilities of ML in an ASD-specific clinical context.

Abstract
PURPOSE Assistance and companion dogs have numerous positive effects for family of autistic children, such as supporting their rehabilitation and improving their quality of life. To date, very few studies have compared the effects of both types of dogs. This comparison, considering the limited access to assistance dogs, could be helpful for families wanting to adopt a dog. METHODS An explanatory sequential design with a mixed-method approach was used. First, 85 parents (nassistance dogs = 57; ncompanion dogs = 28) of children aged between 3 and 17 years old (M = 10.73, SD = 3.67) completed an online questionnaire including sociodemographic questions and the Treatment Acceptability Rating Form-Revised (TARF-R). Then, 17 of these participants (nassistance dogs = 14; ncompanion dogs = 3) completed a semi-structured interview. RESULTS The quantitative data analyses showed that parents with assistance dogs were significantly more satisfied: t (83) = -2.12, p = .037, d = 0.49. Significant associations between some sociodemographic variables (e.g., number of children, comorbid condition, reasons for acquiring a dog) and acceptability/satisfaction (TARF-R total scores) were found. The qualitative analysis revealed that families with both dog types observed positive effects. CONCLUSIONS In brief, having an assistance dog constitutes a significant added value; nevertheless, both types of dogs are appreciated.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by interaction and communication differences, entailing visual attention skill specificities. Interactions with animals, such as in animal-assisted interventions or with service dogs, have been shown to be beneficial for individuals with ASD. While interacting with humans poses challenges for them, engaging with animals appears to be different. One hypothesis suggests that differences between individuals with ASD's visual attention to humans and to animals may contribute to these interaction differences. We propose a scoping review of the research on the visual attention to animals of youths with ASD. The objective is to review the methodologies and tools used to explore such questions, to summarize the main results, to explore which factors may contribute to the differences reported in the studies, and to deduce how youth with ASD observe animals. Utilizing strict inclusion criteria, we examined databases between 1942 and 2023, identifying 21 studies in international peer-reviewed journals. Three main themes were identified: attentional engagement and detection, visual exploration, and behavior. Collectively, our findings suggest that the visual attention of youths with ASD towards animals appears comparable to that of neurotypical peers, at least in 2D pictures (i.e., eye gaze patterns). Future studies should explore whether these results extend to real-life interactions.

Abstract
The integration of a service dog can have numerous benefits for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, although integration takes place within a family, little is known about the dynamics of these benefits on the family microsystem. Thus, the aim of our study was to propose a more systemic perspective, not only by investigating the benefits of SD integration, but also by exploring the relationships between improvements in children with ASD, parents' well-being, parenting strategies and the quality of the child-dog relationship. Twenty parent-child with ASD dyads were followed before, as well as 3 and 6 months after service dog integration. At each stage, parents completed an online survey which included: the Autism Behavior Inventory (ABI-S), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y), the Parenting Stress Index Short Version (PSI-SF), the Monash Dog Owner Relationship Scale (MDORS) and the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ). First, repeated measure one-way ANOVAs revealed that both children's ASD symptoms and parents' anxiety decreased significantly after service dog integration. Additionally, Spearman correlations revealed that the more ASD symptoms decreased, the more parent's anxiety and parenting stress also decreased. Second, the quality of the child-dog relationship appeared to contribute to those benefits on both children's ASD symptoms and parents' well-being. Interestingly, parenting strategies seemed to adapt according to these benefits and to the quality of the child-dog relationship. Through a more systemic perspective, this study highlighted that the integration of a service dog involved reciprocal and dynamic effects for children with ASD and their parents, and shed new light on the processes that may underlie the effects of a service dog for children with ASD.

Abstract
Although previous studies have reported a facial expression classification deficit among adults with SDB, we do not know whether these findings can be generalized to children. In our study, children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) were divided into three groups: primary snoring (n = 51), mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (n = 39), and moderate/severe OSA (n = 26). All participants, including 20 healthy controls, underwent an overnight polysomnography recording and the Emotional Expression Recognition Task. Psychosocial problems were evaluated using the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). There was a borderline significant interaction between expression category and group on reaction times. Further analysis revealed that positive classification advantage (PCA) disappeared in the moderate/severe OSA group, whereas it persisted in the control, primary snoring, and mild OSA groups. Emotional symptoms were positively correlated with OAHI. In both the happy and sad conditions, RT was negatively related to age and body mass index (BMI) but was independent of the obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI), arterial oxygen (SaO2) and total sleep time. The accuracy of identifying a sad expression was negatively related to conduct problems. Children with moderate/severe OSA exhibited dysfunction in facial expression categorization, which could potentially affect social communication ability.
