Mental Health and Well-Being in the Modern Era: A Comprehensive Review of Challenges and Interventions

A critical global concern in the modern era is mental health and well-being, where rapid socioeconomic change, technological advancements, and lifestyle shifts have significantly impacted individuals' psychological health. Primary stressors today include urbanization, digital dependency, social isolation, and economic pressures, alongside the escalating prevalence of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and burnout. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated global mental health crises, increasing the vulnerability of populations during times of uncertainty and instability. This paper critically examines emerging connections between mental health and lifestyle factors such as sleep, diet, and exercise. Interventions are discussed from a multidimensional perspective, encompassing pharmacological treatments, psychotherapy, digital mental health tools, and community-based programs. Special attention is given to the rise of telemedicine and mobile mental health apps, offering innovative solutions to bridge gaps in mental healthcare accessibility. Furthermore, the review underscores the importance of preventive approaches, promoting mental health literacy, reducing stigma, and fostering resilience through mindfulness, cognitive behavioral techniques, and social support systems.

Smartphone use, gender, and adolescent mental health: Longitudinal evidence from South Korea

•We use longitudinal data and FE-IV technique to identify causal effects of smartphone use on adolescent mental health.•We find that longer smartphone use causes increased depressive symptoms and higher suicidal ideation for girls, not for boys.•Social and active smartphone usage such as communicating with friends and family predicts lower depressive symptoms.•Personal history of depressive symptoms and the timing of puberty moderate the effect of SUT on depressive symptoms.•Addictive smartphone behavior is frequent among adolescents, and more prevalent among girls than boys.

Trauma-Informed Care in Digital Health Technologies: Protocol for a Scoping Review

BACKGROUND

The use of digital health technologies is becoming increasingly common across the globe as they offer immense potential to enhance health care delivery by promoting accessibility, flexibility, and personalized care, connecting patients to health care professionals, and offering more efficient services and treatments to remote residents. At the same time, there is an increasing recognition of how digital health can inadvertently foment psychological trauma. This phenomenon has led to the adoption of trauma-informed care in designing and deploying digital health technologies. However, how trauma-informed care is defined and characterized, and the various trauma-informed care strategies used in designing and deploying digital health technologies remain unexplored.

OBJECTIVE

This scoping review aims to explore and synthesize the literature on how trauma-informed care is defined and characterized in digital health and the various trauma-informed care principles, strategies, or recommendations used in designing and deploying digital health.

METHODS

This review will draw on the Joanna Briggs Institute's updated methodological guidance for scoping reviews. A search will be conducted on CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, Compendex Engineering Village, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO. This review will consider published research studies and unpublished work (gray literature). Studies will be included if they applied trauma-informed care in designing or deploying digital health for patients across all geographical locations or provide trauma-informed recommendations on how web developers should develop digital health. Studies will be limited to publications within the past 10 years and studies in all languages will be considered. Two independent reviewers will screen the titles and abstracts, and then perform a full-text review. Data will be extracted into a data extraction tool developed for this study.

RESULTS

The scoping review was undergoing a full search as of April 2023. The main results will synthesize the peer-reviewed and gray literature on adopting trauma-informed care practices in digital health research and development. The study is expected to be completed by December 2023 and the results are expected to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

CONCLUSIONS

This review is expected to provide the knowledge base on the adoption of trauma-informed care in designing and deploying digital health. This knowledge can lead to more engaging, and likely, more effective digital health interventions that have less potential for harm. A synthesis of the various trauma-informed care strategies in digital health will also provide a trauma-informed language by enabling researchers and digital health developers to consider trauma as a critical factor in each stage of the design process.

The Moderator Effect of Subthreshold Autistic Traits on the Relationship between Quality of Life and Internet Addiction

People with sub-threshold autistic traits (SATs) are more prone to develop addictive behaviors such the ones linked to Internet abuse. The restrictions for anti-COVID-19 distancing measures encourage social isolation and, consequently, increase screen time, which may lead to Internet addiction (IA). However, a better quality of life (QoL) may have function as a protective factor against the development of IA. This study wanted to investigate the relation between SATs, QoL, and the overuse of the Internet in a group of 141 university students in the North of Italy. Participants completed a battery of tests. Results suggest that QoL is a predictive factor of IA and that the relationship between QoL and IA is significantly moderated by SATs. This could mean that SATs might represent a risk factor for IA, even when people have a better quality of life. Differences between female and male students are discussed, as well as possible implications for practice.

A survey study of Chinese adolescents' mental and interpersonal quality: Evidence from COVID-19 pandemic

Since 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic, as a global public health emergency, has led to stringency measures (such as lockdown) of various degrees worldwide. As these measures such as social distancing measures and mandatory lockdown are intended to minimize social mobility, they have exerted remarkable impact on individuals' mental health, particularly, adolescents and children. The mental health problems caused include fear, anxiety, sense of isolation and development of more maladaptive behaviors due to prolonged lockdown and restricted interpersonal contact. However, well adaption status and stable interpersonal relationships play an important role in maintaining and promoting the mental health of adolescents and children. This study aims to gain a new sight of understanding of the mental health quality of Chinese adolescents during the COVID-19 Pandemic in terms of adaptation and interpersonal quality. The study is based on a survey on a total of 7,318 junior and senior high school students aged 12-18 years in various regions of China, and intended to examine the differences in adolescent mental health quality by sociodemographic variables such as gender, grade, urban and rural areas, only child, and parental education level. Our study finds that Chinese adolescents show an overall good adaptation and interpersonal quality during the lockdown. However there exists disparity across different categories in developmental patterns of adaptation and interpersonal quality. In addition, good family environment, moderate financial and emotional support, higher parental education level, etc. contribute to the cultivation and improvement of adolescents' mental health quality. Finally, we suggest that the government and researchers should pay more attention to adolescents' mental health issues in terms of adaption status and interpersonal relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for disadvantaged social groups such as girls, younger students, and low-income family students.
