Abstract
Introduction Short video addiction is an emerging form of Internet behavioral addiction characterized by dependent, inappropriate, or excessive use of short video applications. This phenomenon significantly affects decision-making processes and warrants further investigation. Despite the growing prevalence of short video addiction, research on its impact on risky decision-making abilities remains limited. To address this gap, the present study contributes to this critical issue by incorporating neurophysiological data. Methods Using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) brain imaging technology and the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) experimental paradigm, this study explored the decision-making behaviors and brain activity of individuals with short video addiction (Individuals with SVA) under varying short video background cues. Adopting a mixed experimental design, the study examined decision-making ability and brain activation as dependent variables across two groups (addiction and control), two outcomes (gain and loss), and two background cue conditions (with and without cues). A total of 45 participants were included in the study: 23 in the addiction group and 22 in the control group. Results Behavioral results revealed that individuals with short video addiction demonstrated higher risk-taking tendencies, shorter reaction times, and higher rates of balloon explosions, particularly when exposed to short video cues. Neural data indicated heightened sensitivity to short video cues among individuals with addiction compared to healthy controls. Specifically, the right orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and right frontopolar area (FPA) exhibited increased activation during risk decision-making with short video cues in the addiction group, while the control group showed no activation in these regions. Additionally, Individuals with SVA displayed greater sensitivity to loss outcomes, with significant OFC activation observed in response to losses but not gains. In risk decision-making scenarios involving short video cues, notable activation was observed in the FPA and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) among Individuals with SVA when encountering reward loss. However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in risk decision-making under the background without short video cue conditions, regardless of gain or loss outcomes. Conclusion These findings suggest that Individuals with SVA are more susceptible to the influence of short video-related cues, more sensitive to income loss, and more likely to pursue higher rewards, resulting in higher-risk decisions. The fNIRS results provide critical insights into encouraging healthy short video consumption, informing psychological clinical therapy, and advancing research on addiction-related brain mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTS The prevalence of mobile gaming addiction (MGA) has risen as a result of technical advancements that have made it more portable and handier. Emotional distress and a decline in inhibitions might worsen addictions. The study sought to examine the physiological and neuropsychological indicators of MGA. METHODS Following the examination of the online activities of 1774 students in their first year, we recruited 13 participants with MGA and 27 controls, utilizing the internet gaming disorder test (IGDT) and problematic mobile gaming questionnaire (PMGQ). They filled daily executive function scale (DEFS), brief symptom rating scale-50 (BSRS-50), and behavior inhibition/activation scale (BIS/BAS). The Iowa gambling task (IGT-2), Stroop color-word test (SCWT), and the digit-span of the Wechsler intelligence scale were administered. The Heart Rate Variability (HRV) was measured at baseline, playing mobile games, and recovery condition. The independent t-test and repeated-measures ANOVA were used for analysis. RESULTS There were similar demographics between groups. The MGAs exhibited reduced inhibitions in SCWT, decreased DEFS, less total money in IGT-2, and elevated distress in BSRS. Both groups showed decreased SDNN, very low frequency, and total power during gameplay. However, the F-test indicated interaction effects of the proportion of NN50 divided by total number of NNs and high-frequency during gameplay, indicating an elevated state for MGAs than controls. CONCLUSION MGAs exhibit lower executive function, inhibition, and increased negative mood. The MGAs decreased in HRV during gaming, suggesting potential connections to impaired inhibitory control and stress-related responses. Further study is needed to clarify the mechanisms that contribute to MGA and differentiate it from broader frameworks of internet addiction.

Abstract
Over the last few decades, excessive and disordered screen use has become more prevalent, prompting investigations into its associated consequences. The extent to which disordered screen use behaviours impact neuropsychological functioning has been reportedly mixed and at times inconsistent. This review sought to synthesise the literature and estimate the magnitude of overall cognitive impairment across a wide range of disordered screen use behaviours. We also sought to determine the cognitive domains most impacted, and whether the observed impairments were moderated by the classification of screen-related behaviours (i.e., Internet or gaming) or the format of cognitive test administration (i.e., paper-and-pencil or computerised). A systematic search of databases (Embase, PsycINFO, MEDLINE) identified 43 cross-sectional articles that assessed neuropsychological performance in disordered screen use populations, 34 of which were included in the meta-analysis. A random-effects meta-analysis revealed significant small/medium (g = .38) cognitive deficits for individuals with disordered screen use behaviours relative to controls. The most affected cognitive domain with a significant medium effect size (g = .50) was attention and focus followed by a significant reduction in executive functioning (g = .31). The classification of disordered screen use behaviours into Internet or gaming categories or the format of cognitive testing did not moderate these deficits. Additionally, excluding disordered social media use in an exploratory analysis had little effect on the observed outcomes. This study highlights a number of methodological considerations that may have contributed to disparate findings and shows that disordered screen use can significantly impact cognitive performance. Abstract
The pervasive use of smartphones, while enhancing accessibility to information and communication, has raised concerns about its potential negative effects on physical and mental health, including the impairment of decision-making abilities. This study investigates the influence of smartphone addiction on decision-making in college students. A sample of 80 individuals aged 17 to 26 was selected and divided into two groups based on their Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) scores. Participants underwent the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) to evaluate their decision-making in risky and uncertain conditions, while fNIRS recorded their prefrontal cortex activity. The study found that individuals prone to smartphone addiction tend to make riskier choices in risky situations. However, when faced with decisions based on ambiguity, the smartphone addiction group showed increased brain activity in the dlPFC (specifically in channels 4, 9, and 11) compared to when making risky decisions. Despite this increased brain activation, there was no observable difference in behavior between the addiction-prone and control groups in ambiguous scenarios. Notably, the left dlPFC (e.g., channel 4) exhibited significantly higher activation in the addiction group compared to the control group. Findings suggest that smartphone addiction can detrimentally influence decision-making, behaviorally and neurologically, particularly in uncertain contexts. This study supports the classification of smartphone addiction as a genuine addiction and underscores its significance in psychiatric research. In essence, our research underscores the adverse effects of excessive smartphone use on decision-making processes, reinforcing the necessity to treat smartphone addiction as a pressing public health issue.

Abstract
Smartphone addiction is a global problem affecting university students. Previous studies have explored smartphone addiction and related factors using latent variables. In contrast, this study examines the role of smartphone addiction and related factors among university students using a cross-sectional and cross-lagged panel network analysis model at the level of manifest variables. A questionnaire method was used to investigate smartphone addiction and related factors twice with nearly six-month intervals among 1564 first-year university students (M = 19.14, SD = 0.66). The study found that procrastination behavior, academic burnout, self-control, fear of missing out, social anxiety, and self-esteem directly influenced smartphone addiction. Additionally, smartphone addiction predicted the level of self-control, academic burnout, social anxiety, and perceived social support among university students. Self-control exhibited the strongest predictive relationship with smartphone addiction. Overall, self-control, self-esteem, perceived social support, and academic burnout were identified as key factors influencing smartphone addiction among university students. Developing prevention and intervention programs that target these core influencing factors would be more cost-effective.

Abstract
With the widespread use of smartphones, many people spend much time on smartphones for shopping, learning, socializing, and so on, which can affect an individual's mental health and work performance. Especially, individual perceived conflict at work may increase their social anxiety and thus raise the risk of their smartphone addiction. This study collected data from 577 corporate employees in China through convenience sampling to explain the influence mechanism of work conflict on smartphone addiction and to verify the moderating role of rumination. Statistical results show that relationship conflicts, task conflicts, and process conflicts positively affect smartphone addiction by enhancing social anxiety. Moreover, rumination positively moderates the relationship between work conflict and smartphone addiction. People with high rumination are more likely to escape reality due to conflict at work, which further enhances their smartphone addiction behaviors. Our study suggests that a relatively harmonious working atmosphere should be established within organizations, especially for employees with rumination. Work conflict is a predisposing factor for social anxiety and smartphone addiction in individuals with high rumination.

Smartphone Addiction is a social issue caused by excessive smartphone use, affecting decision-making processes. Current research on the risky decision-making abilities of smartphone addicts is limited. This study used the functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) brain imaging technique and a Sequential Risk-Taking Task experimental paradigm to investigate the decision-making behavior and brain activity of smartphone addicts under varying risk levels. Using a mixed experimental design, the research assessed decision-making ability and brain activation levels as dependent variables across two groups (addiction and control), two risk amounts (high and low), and two outcomes (gain and loss). The study included 42 participants, with 25 in the addiction group and 17 in the control group. Results indicated that risk level significantly impacted the decision-making ability of smartphone addicts, with high-risk levels leading to weaker decision-making ability and increased risk-taking. However, at low-risk levels, decision-making abilities between addicts and healthy individuals showed no significant difference. Furthermore, brain imaging results using fNIRS revealed stronger brain activation in the dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (dlPFC) region for smartphone addicts under loss outcome conditions, with no significant differences between the two groups in terms of brain activation at varying risk volumes. These findings are critical in promoting healthy smartphone use, guiding clinical treatment, and advancing brain mechanism research.

Abstract
This study intended to (1) estimate the prevalence of Self-Reported Smartphone Addiction among adolescents and (2) know the adolescents’ perspective on smartphone addiction in the COVID-19 pandemic context. The research is a sequential explanatory mixed-method study conducted with adolescents aged from 15 to 18 years old. In the first phase, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 479 adolescents and, in the second, an exploratory research with a qualitative approach was conducted with 16 participants, who were in the Focus Groups sessions. The estimated prevalence of self-reported smartphone addiction was 56.37%. The most prevalent symptoms were those related to the tolerance. Sequentially, from the qualitative analysis, two categories were identified that reveal how adolescents perceive smartphone addiction in the COVID-19 pandemic context, as well as how they unveil the elements that characterize this addiction. It can be concluded that most adolescents were classified as smartphone addicted and this is admitted by most of them during the sessions. The addictive relationship established with the device was intensified by the consequences of the pandemic. Thus, health professionals must implement actions aimed at an adaptive behavior towards smartphones and that promote mental health in adolescence.

Abstract
Addiction in adolescence is increasing and has a significant impact on physical and mental health. Notably, addictions can be comorbid and affect each other. Despite the recent growing interest in food addiction (FA) and problematic smartphone use (PSU), few studies have investigated their association in adolescents. We investigated the relationship between FA and PSU in adolescents and the effects of eating behaviors. A total of 209 adolescents (44.5% male; mean age = 12.86 ± 0.7 years) participated in the current school-based community study. We found a positive correlation between the dimensional Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children 2.0 (dYFAS-C2.0) and the Smartphone Overdependence Scale after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. The high-risk PSU group accounted for 17.2% of participants. Furthermore, this group showed 2.3 times higher dYFAS-C2.0 scores than the general group. Emotional overeating and satiety responsiveness were correlated with PSU. A comprehensive evaluation of addiction symptoms is needed for proper intervention, especially in adolescents with symptoms of abnormal eating behaviors.

Abstract
The uncontrolled use of specific Internet applications is increasingly recognized as a mental health issue. Gaming disorder, which is one subtype of specific Internet-use disorders (sIUDs), has been included in the ICD-11 as disorder due to addictive behaviors. Addictive disorders are assumed to be accompanied by cognitive deficits as indicated by weaker performance in executive function and risky decision-making tasks. This study investigates risky decision-making in individuals with tendencies towards sIUDs including gaming, online buying-shopping, and social-networks-use disorders. A total of 293 individuals participated in the study. Based on specific screening instruments, the participants were assigned to a group with tendencies towards sIUD or a control group. Participants completed a risky decision-making task and questionnaires assessing risk-taking propensity, impulsivity, psychopathology, and perceived stress. The group with sIUD tendencies showed higher attentional impulsivity and higher levels of depression and anxiety compared to the control group. The groups did not differ in decision making and risk propensity. Decision making did not have significant effects on sIUD symptoms. Risk for developing sIUDs does not appear to be accompanied by altered general decision-making tendencies. Rather, psychological (pre-)load and attentional deficits appear to be relevant features in uncontrolled use of the Internet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Social-networks-use disorder is discussed as a potential further type of disorders due to addictive behaviors. Theoretical models assume cue-induced craving and disadvantageous decision making to be relevant mechanisms. This study investigates if the presentation of social-networks-related cues interferes with decision making under ambiguity. METHODS Craving was induced with a cue-reactivity paradigm and assessed with a visual analogue scale. Participants (N = 146) played a modified Iowa Gambling Task with social-networks-related cues and neutral cues presented on the advantageous and disadvantageous decks respectively, or vice versa. Symptoms of social-networks-use disorder were measured with a modified version of the short Internet Addiction Test. RESULTS Overall, participants chose options with neutral cues more often than those with social-networks-related cues, even if it was disadvantageous. There was a significant interaction between decision-making performance and Iowa Gambling Task condition in predicting symptom severity. The results indicate that choosing decks with social-networks-related cues even if it was disadvantageous is associated with higher tendencies towards a social-networks-use disorder. The interaction with cue-induced craving did not explain further variance. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS The results highlight the relevance of cue reactivity, decision making, and their interaction as potential mechanisms explaining tendencies towards a social-networks-use disorder. Decision making was influenced by affective responses, which could result in a higher risk of a potential addictive behavior. This is consistent with the findings from addiction research and with theoretical approaches assuming an imbalance between affective and cognitive processes in addictive behaviors.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that both opioid addicted and gambling addicted individuals are characterized by higher levels of risky behavior in comparison to healthy people. It has been shown that the administration of substitution drugs can reduce cravings for opioids and the risky decisions made by individuals addicted to opioids. Although it is suggested that the neurobiological foundations of addiction are similar, it is possible that risk behaviors in opioid addicts may differ in detail from those addicted to gambling. The aim of this work was to compare the level of risk behavior in individuals addicted to opioid, with that of individuals addicted to gambling, using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). The score and response time during the task were measured. It was also observed, in the basis of the whole IGT test, that individuals addicted to gambling make riskier decisions in comparison to healthy individuals from the control group but less riskier decisions in comparison to individuals addicted to opioids, before administration of methadone and without any statistically significant difference after administration of methadone-as there has been growing evidence that methadone administration is strongly associated with a significant decrease in risky behavior.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study assessed the incidence of transitions in smartphone addiction proneness (SAP) among children and examined the effects of gender, use patterns (social networking sites (SNSs) use and smartphone gaming) and depression on smartphone addiction transitions. METHODS A representative sample of 2,155 children from Taipei completed longitudinal surveys in both 2015 (5th grade) and 2016 (6th grade). Latent transition analysis (LTA) was used to characterize transitions in SAP and to examine the effects of gender, use patterns and depression on SAP transitions. RESULTS LTA identified four latent statuses of SAP: about half of the children were in non-SAP status, one-fifth were in tolerance status, one-sixth were in withdrawal status, and one-seventh were in high-SAP status. Both boys and girls had a higher prevalence of high-SAP and tolerance in 6th grade than in 5th grade, whereas in both grades boys had a higher prevalence of high-SAP and withdrawal, and girls had a higher prevalence of non-SAP and tolerance. Controlling for parents' education, family structure, and household income, higher use of SNSs by children, increasing use of mobile gaming and higher levels of depression were individually associated with increased odds of being in one of the three SAP statuses other than non-SAP. When all three covariates were jointly entered into the model, usage of SNSs and depression remained significant predictors. CONCLUSION Both boys and girls tended to transition to tolerance or high-SAP statuses, while children's depression and their usage of SNSs increased the risk of smartphone addiction.
