Changes in oral pathology teaching methods during the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on student performance (oral pathology teaching changes during the COVID-19 pandemic)

Abstract Background/purpose

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has influenced the dental education in Osaka Dental University. The purpose of this study was to summarize the impact of COVID-19 on student performance and the current more appropriate teaching methods by comparing the changes in various oral pathology exam results before and after COVID-19.

Materials and methods

The experimental and control groups consisted of second year students in the department of dentistry at our university for the years 2019 (136 people) and 2020 (125 people). The impact of different teaching methods on student performance was compared by calculating the mean scores and percentage of failures on various exams and whether or not class credits were earned between the two years. A t test was used to determine statistical significance.

Results

The mean scores on the mini-tests were lower in 2020 than in 2019, while the average score of the intermediate exam and the number of students receiving class credits were higher. The mean scores on the practical and unit exams were not statistically significant between the years, but the failure rate on both exams was higher in 2019 than in 2020.

Conclusion

COVID-19 had impacts on student performance. A comparison of the mean scores on the exams revealed that the use of microscopy, oral questions, and online animations contributed to improved performance on different exams. Therefore, to promote students' understanding and retention of memorized knowledge of oral pathology, the use of microscopes will be resumed whenever possible, as well as continuation with oral questions and online animations.

Effects of COVID-19 epidemic on mental health of dental students of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2020

OBJECTIVES

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has imposed panic and fear among people in the community, and has endangered the mental health of people, including students. The purpose of this study was to determine the psychological effects of COVID-19 outbreak on dental students of our university in 2020.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

The present cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 133 dental students from the fifth and 11th semesters in our University. Data collection tools included the Demographic Information Questionnaire, the 28-item Goldberg General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) to measure the psychological aspects, the BarOn Emotional Quotient-Inventory (BarOn EQ-i) to determine emotional intelligence, and the COVID-19 Anxiety Scale (CAS) of students during the epidemic. The reliability and validity of the questionnaires had already been reviewed and confirmed. The correlation of the scores of the questionnaires was evaluated by Pearson correlation coefficient and the effects of different variables in predicting the scores of the questionnaires by regression model.

RESULTS

Among the tested students, the mean GHQ-28 score was 35.73%, the mean BarOn EQ-i score was 59.94%, and the mean CAS score was 25.27%. There was a significant and direct correlation between GHQ-28 and BarOn EQ-i scores and also a significant and negative correlation between GHQ-28 and CAS scores and between BarOn EQ-i and CAS scores.

CONCLUSION

Despite limited CAS scores and high BarOn EQ-i scores, psychological disorders were observed in a significant number of students during the COVID-19 pandemic period; there is a need for therapeutic and counseling interventions to mitigate the effects of these disorders.

Sex-Dependent Performance of the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte, Monocyte-to-Lymphocyte, Platelet-to-Lymphocyte and Mean Platelet Volume-to-Platelet Ratios in Discriminating COVID-19 Severity

Background

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and mean platelet volume-to-platelet ratio (MPR) are combined hematology tests that predict COVID-19 severity, although with different cut-off values. Because sex significantly impacts immune responses and the course of COVID-19, the ratios could be biased by sex.

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate sex-dependent differences in the contribution of NLR, PLR, MLR, and MPR to COVID-19 severity and mortality upon hospital admission using a sample of pneumonia patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods

This single-center observational cross-sectional study included 3,280 confirmed COVID-19 cases (CDC 2019-Novel Coronavirus real-time RT-PCR Diagnostic) from Quito (Ecuador). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to identify optimal cut-offs of the above parameters when discriminating severe COVID-19 pneumonia and mortality risks after segregation by sex. Severe COVID-19 pneumonia was defined as having PaO₂ < 60 mmHg and SpO₂ < 94%, whereas non-severe COVID-19 pneumonia was defined as having PaO₂ ≥ 60 mmHg and SpO₂ ≥ 94%.

Results

The mortality rate of COVID-19 among men was double that in women. Severe COVID-19 pneumonia and non-surviving patients had a higher level of NLR, MLR, PLR, and MPR. The medians of NLR, MLR, and MPR in men were significantly higher, but PLR was not different between men and women. In men, these ratios had lower cut-offs than in women (NLR: 2.42 vs. 3.31, MLR: 0.24 vs. 0.35, and PLR: 83.9 vs. 151.9). The sensitivity of NLR, MLR, and PLR to predict pneumonia severity was better in men (69–77%), whereas their specificity was enhanced in women compared to men (70–76% vs. 23–48%).

Conclusion

These ratios may represent widely available biomarkers in COVID-19 since they were significant predictors for disease severity and mortality although with different performances in men and women.

What does COVID-19 testing results really say? The real statistics concealed behind the accessible data

Accurate and comprehensive testing is crucial for practitioners to portray the pandemic. Without testing there is no data; yet, the exact number of infected people cannot be determined due to the lack of comprehensive testing. The number of seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 infection is obviously relative to the extent of testing. However, the true number of infections might be still far higher than the reported values. To compare the countries based on the number of seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 infection is misleading, as there may not be enough tests being carried out to properly monitor the outbreak. In this paper, we closely look through the COVID-19 testing results. Herein, we try to draw conclusions based on the reported data: first, the presence of a possible relationship between COVID-19 transition and patients' age will be assessed. Then, the COVID-19 case fatality rate (CFR) is compared with the age-demographic data for different countries. Based on the results, a method for estimating a lower bound (minimum) for the number of actual positive cases will be developed and validated. Results of this study have shown that CFR is a metric reflecting the spread of the virus, but is a factor of the extent of testing and does not necessarily show the real size of the outbreak. Moreover, no large difference in susceptibility by age has been found. The results suggest the similarity between the age distribution of COVID-19 and the population age-demographic is improving over the course of the pandemic. In addition, countries with lower CFRs have a more similar COVID-19 age distribution, which is a result of more comprehensive testing. Finally, a method for estimation of the real number of infected people based on the age distributions, reported CFRs, and the extent of testing will be developed and validated.
