Trends in Physical Activity Research on Tobacco and/or Alcohol: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background/Objectives: Physical activity allows the enjoyment of personal health benefits in those who practice it, including the possibility of modifying behavioral risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol consumption. These risk factors are responsible for the development of non-communicable diseases, which are preventable and controllable. The scientific field on this object of study has grown in recent years. The main objective of this study was to perform a scientific mapping to explore the trend of annual publications, and to analyze and identify the thematic categories, the authors, countries and journals with the highest number of papers, the most referenced papers and authors, and the most used keywords in research related to physical activity and tobacco and/or alcohol consumption. Methods: Through a bibliometric analysis based on traditional bibliometric laws on the scientific documentation related to the subject and indexed in the Main Collection of the Web of Science. The DeSolla Price Law was used to analyze the trend of annual publications, using the coefficient of determination R2. Lotka's law was applied to identify prolific authors, Bradford's law to highlight the most frequent publication sources, the h-index to identify the most cited articles and Zipf's law to highlight the keywords most used in research. Results: A total of 538 documents were analyzed. The trend followed by annual publications is in an exponential growth phase. Adrian Taylor and Michael Ussher were identified as prolific authors. USA and Preventive Medicine were the country and journal with the highest number of publications. The most frequently used words were physical activity, smoking, exercise, alcohol, obesity, and smoking cessation. Conclusions: This bibliometric review identified an exponential growth from 1994 to date of research related to physical activity and tobacco and/or alcohol consumption. It allowed us to identify trends and guide the development of future research in these or new related areas.

Global Highly Cited Publication Trends and Research Hotspots in Osteoporosis and Bone Metabolic Cells: A Bibliometric and Visualization Analysis from 2013 to 2023

BACKGROUND

Bone metabolic diseases such as osteoporosis are caused by disruption of the metabolic balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Thousands of papers have been published on osteoporosis and bone metabolizing cells. The purpose of this study is to draw the publication trend of highly cited literature in this field through bibliometrics and to explore the research hotspot analysis.

OBJECTIVE

This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of countries/regions, research institutions, authors, keywords, relevant journals, and references in the field of osteoporosis and bone metabolic cells research, with a specific focus on the theme of "Osteoporosis and bone metabolic cells". Furthermore, utilizing bibliometric methods, the study aims to offer valuable insights and references for future research endeavors, as well as clinical prevention and treatment strategies in this domain.

METHODS

The Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection database was examined in order to identify articles with high citation counts from 2013 to 31 October 2023. The citation counts, authors, year of publication, source, journal, geographical origin, subject, article type, and level of evidence were further analyzed using the R bibliometric package. The VOSviewer software was utilized to visualize word co-occurrence in a total of 251 articles.

RESULTS

Our search strategy included 251 highly cited articles published between 2013 and 2023 in the field of osteoporosis and bone metabolic cells. The number of publications in this field remains consistently high, indicating ongoing research interest. Notably, the United States has made significant achievements and contributions in this area. Xie Hui, Cao Xu, and Goodman, Stewart are among the main contributors to these advancements. Nature medicine has the highest journal impact factor of 82.9, highlighting its prominence. The journal of bone and mineral research ranks first with 1,322 citations. Keyword research topics in this field include osteoclast differentiation, osteoblast differentiation, and mesenchymal stem cells. Through citation analysis, we found that 195 articles have been cited more than 100 times, demonstrating their significance and impact.

CONCLUSION

This study analyzed the relationship between osteoporosis and bone metabolic cells using a bibliometric method. The results of these analyses can help researchers gain a more direct and scientific understanding of trends in the field. Additionally, it can provide guidance in identifying hot research directions and offer new ideas for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

From the early scars to the vicissitudes of old age: A bibliometric analysis revealing childhood adversity and aging

BACKGROUND

Adversity suffered in childhood may profoundly affect aging over the subsequent life cycle. The field of childhood adversity and aging has amassed a certain number of publications, but there are no bibliometric studies in this field.

METHODS

Publications in 10 years on childhood adversity and aging were searched in the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric tools were used to analyze and visualize these publications by country, institution, journal, author, keyword, research area, and co-citation.

RESULTS

Four hundred thirty-five publications were retrieved from 2014 to September 21, 2023, with a 4.9% annual growth rate. The United States (251), University of California, San Francisco (59), Elissa S. Epel (11), and Psychoneuroendocrinology (29) were the countries, institutions, authors, and journals contributing the highest number of publications in this field, respectively. "Early-life stress" (87), "depression" (82), "childhood trauma" (69), and "aging" (60) were the keywords that appeared more frequently.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first bibliometric study on childhood adversity and aging. The United States dominates the field regarding publication numbers, research institutions, and researchers. Publications in this field are interdisciplinary, covering several critical subject areas and having far-reaching impacts, with gerontology, neurosciences, psychology, and psychiatry at the core.

Global Stem Cell Research in Orthopaedics: A Bibliometric Study from 1995 to 2020

Background

The research field of stem cell-based therapies in orthopaedics has witnessed significant growth in the recent past. We aimed to identify and analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the global highly cited papers (HCPs) in stem cell research in orthopaedics.

Methods

This study relied on secondary data extracted from Scopus, Elsevier's abstract and citation database. An advanced search string was employed, for the period from 1995 to 2020. For each paper, the extracted information included the number of citations, title, authors (name, number, authorship position, and country), year of publication, title of the journals, study design, and thematic field. The VOSviewer (1.6.20) was used to uncover relationships between authors, institutions, keywords, and publications.

Results

There were a total of 1427 publications and out of these 186 papers had 100 or more citations (range 100-2644) and were considered as HCPs. The average citation per paper (CPP) was 265.8. Only 4% of the top HCPs contributed 20% of the total citations of all HCPs. All the HCPs were published from high-income countries, and the USA was the leading country in all aspects of publication on stem cell research. Méndez-Ferrer S registered the highest citation (n = 2644), Prockop DJ was the most prolific author (n = 8 papers), and Harvard Medical School, USA emerged as the most prolific organization with 12 HCPs.

Conclusion

Global research in stem cell therapies for orthopaedic problems is making strides, and is an emerging field of research. Stem cell research offers the potential for improved treatment outcomes for various musculoskeletal conditions.

What is known about osteoporosis research in Latin America?: A bibliometric analysis of three decades

Identifying the gaps in scientific production in a topic allows directing research in order to make better public investment decisions. Bibliometric data on osteoporosis in Latin America are very limited and unclear and, given the impact of this disease in this region, it is relevant to analyze the latest trends in the subject. The study approach was quantitative, observational-descriptive, cross-sectional. Data were collected from journals indexed in Scopus between 1990 and 2019, using a search strategy that included Medical Subject Headings terms for "Osteoporosis" and other related terms, as well as VOSviewer software to create cooperative and co-occurrence word maps. 3261 documents were analyzed, with an annual scientific production rate of 5% (163 documents), where 73.9% were original articles. The countries with the highest scientific production in osteoporosis were Brazil (55.2%) and Argentina (18%). Extra-regional cooperation was mainly with the United States (16.35%) and Spain (5.18%). Six of the 10 most productive countries had their own government agencies as the main funders. The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development was the institution that funded the most (n = 194). The term "osteoporosis" together with the terms "bone mineral density," "fractures," and "menopause" were the most frequently addressed subjects. Latin American scientific production in osteoporosis has shown a significant increase. However, in the last 3 years it has shown a slight reduction. Greater intraregional collaboration involving universities, institutions and health societies is needed.
