Association Between Social Support and Perceived Stress: A Cross-Sectional Study on Staffs of the Epidemic Prevention During the Covid-19 Epidemic in China

Association of habitual physical activity with depression and anxiety: a multicentre cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

Despite the known benefits of physical activity, the effect of habitual physical activity (HPA) on depression and anxiety remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association of HPA with the risk of depression and anxiety among Chinese adults, with the consideration of disease severity.

METHODS

The participants in this multicentre cross-sectional study were from the nationwide survey of the psychology and behaviour of Chinese residents. Depression and anxiety were measured using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire and seven-item Generalised Anxiety Disorder scale. HPA was assessed by the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Crude and adjusted ORs with their 95% CIs were estimated by using ordinal logistic regression.

RESULTS

Of the 19 798 participants, 3901 (19.7%) had anxiety and 8914 (45.02%) had depression. Compared with inactive participants, depression risk in individuals reporting low, median and high volume HPA was reduced by 23% (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.89), 21% (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.68 to 0.90) and 13% (OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.78 to 0.98), respectively, after adjustment for confounder. No significant association of HPA with anxiety risk was observed.

CONCLUSION

Participation in HPA, whether low, median or high volume, was associated with a lower risk of depression compared with inactive participation, while no significant association was observed between HPA and anxiety.

Influencing factors of quality of life among front-line nurses who collected nucleic acid samples during COVID-19: a path analysis

Aim

The aim of this study is to investigate the quality of life of nurses who collected nucleic acid samples throughout the COVID-19 epidemic's routine management, as well as the factors that may have influenced it.

Background

After the outbreak of COVID-19, normalized epidemic prevention and control throughout China were implemented. Nucleic acid testing has become an effective measure for the early detection of virus-infected individuals. Nurses collecting nucleic acid samples undertake important tasks. Their quality of life is significant to maintaining team stability and containing the epidemic. However, research on their quality of life is still limited.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 1,292 nurses who collected nucleic acid samples from five tertiary general hospitals in Xi'an through self-reported electronic questionnaires (including general demographic information, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Social Support Rating Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Scale). Descriptive, one-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression were performed using SPSS 26.0. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the influencing factors.

Results

The nurses collecting nucleic acid samples had a modest level of quality of life. Age, marital status, average daily sleep duration, frequency of exercise, psychological resilience, and social support were all influencing factors of quality of life, according to multiple linear regression analysis. Quality of life was found to be significantly related to psychological resilience and social support.

Conclusion

Demographic characteristics, psychological resilience, and social support are the factors affecting the quality of life of nurses who collect nucleic acid samples. Nursing managers should focus more on these factors to improve the quality of life for nurses.

Relevance to clinical practice

Nursing managers should realize the importance of the quality of life of nurses who collect nucleic acid samples in maintaining a vigorous nursing team and ensuring optimized epidemic control. Social support should also be provided to nurses to improve their psychological resilience, thereby improving their quality of life.

Sociodemographic determinants of life satisfaction among grandparent caregivers

Introduction

It has become a common contemporary phenomenon for grandparents to provide care for young children in their family in both urban and rural areas. This study attempted to investigate psychological wellbeing and quality of life among grandparents involved in childcare in China, and to explore the relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, quality of life, and life satisfaction in this group.

Methods

Using stratified random cluster sampling, we conducted a survey of grandparent caregivers in Wuhan in November and December of 2020 (N = 1,640). Descriptive statistics to univariate analysis, multiple linear regression, and structural equation modeling were carried out.

Results

Across all respondents, mean scores on life satisfaction, sleep quality, and quality of life were 14.05 ± 3.50, 5.02 ± 3.37, and 74.51 ± 16.88, respectively. Marital status, income, chronic diseases, family relationships, and physical exercise were found to be associated with life satisfaction. The results of structural equation modeling indicated that quality of life, sleep quality, and sociodemographic characteristics may exert direct and indirect effects on life satisfaction. Mediating effects accounted for 30.0% of the total effects.

Conclusion

Overall, grandparent caregivers have poor life satisfaction, quality of life, and sleep quality. A higher household income, better relationships with family members, healthy lifestyle habits, and high-quality sleep may effectively help to improve life satisfaction among grandparent caregivers.
