Clarifying the Biomechanical Concept of Coordination Through Comparison With Coordination in Motor Control

Spatiotemporal lower-limb asymmetries during stair descent in athletes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

PURPOSE

This study evaluated motor control recovery at different times following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) by investigating lower-limb spatiotemporal symmetry during stair descent performances.

METHODS

We used a cross-sectional design to compare asymptomatic athletes (Controls, n = 18) with a group of people with ACLR (n = 49) divided into three time-from-ACLR subgroups (Early: <6 months, n = 17; Mid: 6-18 months, n = 16; Late: ≥18 months, n = 16). We evaluated: "temporal symmetry" during the stance subphases (single-support, first and second double-support) and "spatial symmetry" for hip-knee-ankle intra-joint angular displacements during the stance phase using a dissimilarity index applied on superimposed 3D phase plots.

RESULTS

We found significant between-group differences in temporal variables (p ≤ 0.001). Compared to Controls, both Early and Mid (p ≤ 0.05) showed asymmetry in the first double-support time (longer for their injured vs. non-injured leg), while Early generally also showed longer durations in all other phases, regardless of stepping leg. No statistically significant differences were found for spatial intra-joint symmetry between groups.

CONCLUSION

Temporal but not spatial asymmetry in stair descent is often present early after ACLR; it may remain for up to 18 months and may underlie subtle intra- and inter-joint compensations. Spatial asymmetry may need further exploration.

Characterising coordination strategies during initial acceleration in sprinters ranging from highly trained to world class

Identifying coordination strategies used by sprinters and features that differentiate these strategies will aid in understanding different technical approaches to initial sprint acceleration. Moreover, multiple effective coordination strategies may be available to athletes of similar ability, which typical group-based analyses may mask. This study aimed to identify sub-groups of sprinters based on thigh-thigh and shank-foot coordination during initial acceleration, and assess sprint performance across different combinations of coordination strategies. Angular kinematics were obtained from 21 sprinters, and coordination determined using vector coding methods, with step 1 and steps 2-4 separated for analysis. Performance was assessed using metrics derived from velocity-time profiles. Using hierarchical cluster analysis, three distinct coordination strategies were identified from thigh-thigh and shank-foot coordination in step 1 and two strategies in steps 2-4. Coordination strategies primarily differed around early flight thigh-thigh coordination and early stance shank-foot coordination in step 1, while timing of reversals in thigh rotation characterised differences in later steps. Higher performers tended to have greater lead thigh and foot dominance in step 1 and early swing thigh retraction in steps 2-4. The novel application of cluster analysis to coordination provides new insights into initial acceleration technique in sprinters, with potential considerations for training and performance.

Influences of Psychomotor Behaviors on Learning Swimming Styles in 6-9-Year-Old Children

The aim of this study was to identify the existence of some relationships between certain psychomotor behaviors, which we consider specific to swimming, and learning to execute the technique of some swimming styles (front crawl and backstroke). The study was carried out for 10 months and included 76 children (40 boys and 36 girls) aged between 6 and 9 years who practice recreational swimming in a city in Romania. Several tools were used: the Tapping test for manual dexterity, the Goodenough test for body schema, the Flamingo test for static balance, and the horizontal buoyancy test for body balance on the water. The results indicated better ratings on all psychomotor behaviors analyzed according to gender (in favor of girls compared to boys). The levels of all analyzed psychomotor behaviors have a direct relationship to the subjects' age. Also, we identified moderate positive correlations for manual dexterity (rs = 0.63 in the front crawl style; rs = 0.57 in the backstroke style) and strong correlations for body schema, static balance and buoyancy, coordination with the learning of the two swimming styles (r or rs between 0.77 and 0.85). In conclusion, psychomotor behaviors can be predictors for learning swimming styles.

Joint Coordination With a Change in Task Constraint During Accurate Overhead Throwing

In sports situations, players may be required to throw at different speeds. The question of how skilled players throw the ball accurately to the desired location under different speed conditions is of interest to biomechanics researchers. Previous research suggested that throwers use different types of joint coordination. However, joint coordination with a change in throwing speed has not been studied. Here, we show the effects of changes in throwing speed on joint coordination during accurate overhead throwing. Participants were seated on a low chair with their trunk fixed and threw a baseball aimed at a target under 2 different speed conditions (slow and fast). In the slow condition, the elbow flexion/extension angle coordinated with other joint angles and angular velocities to reduce the variability of the vertical hand velocity. In the fast condition, the shoulder internal/external rotation angle and the shoulder horizontal flexion/extension angular velocity coordinated with other joint angles and angular velocities to reduce the variability of the vertical hand velocity. These results showed that joint coordination differed with changes in throwing speed, indicating that joint coordination is not always fixed, but may differ depending on the task constraints, such as throwing speed.

Running Injury Paradigms and Their Influence on Footwear Design Features and Runner Assessment Methods: A Focused Review to Advance Evidence-Based Practice for Running Medicine Clinicians

Many runners seek health professional advice regarding footwear recommendations to reduce injury risk. Unfortunately, many clinicians, as well as runners, have ideas about how to select running footwear that are not scientifically supported. This is likely because much of the research on running footwear has not been highly accessible outside of the technical footwear research circle. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative review is to update clinical readers on the state of the science for assessing runners and recommending running footwear that facilitate the goals of the runner. We begin with a review of basic footwear construction and the features thought to influence biomechanics relevant to the running medicine practitioner. Subsequently, we review the four main paradigms that have driven footwear design and recommendation with respect to injury risk reduction: Pronation Control, Impact Force Modification, Habitual Joint (Motion) Path, and Comfort Filter. We find that evidence in support of any paradigm is generally limited. In the absence of a clearly supported paradigm, we propose that in general clinicians should recommend footwear that is lightweight, comfortable, and has minimal pronation control technology. We further encourage clinicians to arm themselves with the basic understanding of the known effects of specific footwear features on biomechanics in order to better recommend footwear on a patient-by-patient basis.
