Abstract
Periodontitis is a widespread disease, associated with challenges both in its diagnosis and in selecting from various therapeutic approaches, which do not always yield the expected success. This literature review was conducted to explore diverse therapeutic approaches, especially those focused on nanotechnologies, and their potential contribution to the successful modulation of the host's response. The effects of the existing microbial diversity and the imbalance of key microbial species in contributing to the progression and worsening of the host's response in periodontitis are well known. It is essential to understand the role of a well-structured treatment plan for periodontitis, providing opportunities for new research and innovative treatment strategies aimed at reducing the impact of periodontitis on oral and overall systemic health. This will be beneficial for dental professionals, enabling them to effectively prevent and treat periodontitis, ultimately improving the overall health and well-being of patients.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to assess the periodontal disease parameters in patients with ischemic stroke. Materials and methods The study included 21 patients with ischemic brain stroke and a control group that was matched in number, age, and gender. All participants underwent a standard periodontal examination. The inclusion criterion of this study was the presence of at least 15 teeth. Periodontal epithelial surface area, periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA), and periodontal disease stage were determined. All participants were given a questionnaire to determine oral health-related quality of life (OHQL). Stroke risk factors were assessed. Results Stroke patients had a significantly higher OHQL score than the control group (20.81 vs. 12.57) and a full-mouth plaque score (FMPS, 27.57 vs. 16.83), while full-mouth bleeding score (FMBS) was significantly higher in the control group than in the hospital group (10.17 vs. 6.42). For PISA, statistically significant negative correlations were found for smoking, cholesterol levels, and LDL levels, while significant positive correlations were found for FMBS, clinical attachment level and probing depth. Conclusion Although PISA does represent the amount of periodontal tissue that is inflamed, tooth loss due to advanced periodontal disease combined with oral hygiene limitations imposed by the hospital setting and the stroke recovery process remain the most significant obstacles for a more meaningful understanding of the data represented by specific clinical, laboratory and various demographic parameters that characterize the two diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-surgical periodontal treatment is the mainstay of periodontal treatment. In Malaysia, the prevalence of periodontal disease is substantial among adults with almost half of them having periodontitis. Therefore, we estimated the economic burden of non-surgical periodontal treatment in specialist clinics in Malaysia. METHODS Relevant data from multiple data sources which include national oral health and health surveys, national census, extensive systematic literature reviews, as well as discussion with experts, were used to estimate the economic burden of non-surgical periodontal management in specialist clinics in Malaysia in 2020. This estimation was done from the oral healthcare provider's perspective in both public and private sectors using an irreducible Markov model of 3-month cycle length over a time horizon of one year. RESULTS In 2020, the national economic burden of non-surgical periodontal treatment during the first year of periodontal management in specialist clinics in Malaysia was MYR 696 million (USD 166 million), ranging from MYR 471 million (USD 112 million) to MYR 922 million (USD 220 million). Of these, a total of MYR 485 million (USD 115 million) and MYR 211 million (USD 50 million) were the direct oral healthcare cost in public and private dental clinics, respectively. CONCLUSION The findings of this study demonstrated substantial economic burden of non-surgical periodontal management in specialist clinics in Malaysia. Being a life-long disease, these findings highlight the importance of enforcing primary and secondary preventive measures. On the strength and reliability of this economic evidence, this study provides vital information to inform policy- and decision-making regarding the future direction of managing periodontitis in Malaysia.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the local microbiome and the host immune response, resulting in periodontal structure damage and even tooth loss. Scaling and root planning combined with antibiotics are the conventional means of nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis, but they are insufficient to fully heal periodontitis due to intractable bacterial attachment and drug resistance. Novel and effective therapeutic options in clinical drug therapy remain scarce. Nanotherapeutics achieve stable cell targeting, oral retention and smart release by great flexibility in changing the chemical composition or physical characteristics of nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the protectiveness and high surface area to volume ratio of nanoparticles enable high drug loading, ensuring a remarkable therapeutic efficacy. Currently, the combination of advanced nanoparticles and novel therapeutic strategies is the most active research area in periodontitis treatment. In this review, we first introduce the pathogenesis of periodontitis, and then summarize the state-of-the-art nanotherapeutic strategies based on the triple concerto of antibacterial activity, immunomodulation and periodontium regeneration, particularly focusing on the therapeutic mechanism and ingenious design of nanomedicines. Finally, the challenges and prospects of nano therapy for periodontitis are discussed from the perspective of current treatment problems and future development trends.
