Abstract
The mechanism of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) is unknown. Using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A), we compared retinal foveal avascular zone (FAZ), vessel density (VD), and vessel length density (VLD) in non-hospitalized Neuro-PASC patients with those in healthy controls in an effort to elucidate the mechanism underlying this debilitating condition. Neuro-PASC patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test and neurological symptoms lasting ≥6 weeks were included. Those with prior COVID-19 hospitalization were excluded. Subjects underwent OCT-A with segmentation of the full retinal slab into the superficial (SCP) and deep (DCP) capillary plexus. The FAZ was manually delineated on the full slab in ImageJ. An ImageJ macro was used to measure VD and VLD. OCT-A variables were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models with fixed effects for Neuro-PASC, age, and sex, and a random effect for patient to account for measurements from both eyes. The coefficient of Neuro-PASC status was used to determine statistical significance; p-values were adjusted using the Benjamani-Hochberg procedure. Neuro-PASC patients (N = 30; 60 eyes) exhibited a statistically significant (p = 0.005) reduction in DCP VLD compared to healthy controls (N = 44; 80 eyes). The sole reduction in DCP VLD in Neuro-PASC may suggest preferential involvement of the smallest blood vessels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While retinal vessel changes are evident in the eyes of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), changes in the vasculature of possible MS mimics such as primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) remain to be determined. We investigated the potential of retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography (OCTA) as diagnostic tool to differentiate between patients with RRMS and pSS. METHODS This cross-sectional study included patients with RRMS (n = 36), pSS (n = 36) and healthy controls (n = 30). Participants underwent clinical examination, assessment of visual acuity, retinal OCT, OCTA, and serum markers of glial and neuronal damage. We investigated the associations between OCTA parameters, visual functions, and serum markers. Eyes with a history of optic neuritis (ON) were excluded from analysis. RESULTS We observed a significant thinning of the combined ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer in the eyes of patients with RRMS but not with pSS, when compared to healthy controls. Retinal vessel densities of the superficial vascular complex (SVC) were reduced in both patients with RRMS and pSS. However, retinal vessel rarefication of the deep vascular complex (DVC) was only evident in patients with pSS but not RRMS. Using multivariate regression analysis, we found that DVC vessel loss in pSS patients was associated with worse visual acuity. CONCLUSIONS Compared to patients with RRMS, rarefication of deep retinal vessels is a unique characteristic of pSS and associated with worse visual function. Assuming a disease-specific retinal vessel pathology, these data are indicative of a differential affliction of the gliovascular complex in the retina of RRMS and pSS patients.

Abstract
(1) Background: This study aims to evaluate retinal perfusion by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) without diabetic retinopathy (DR). (2) Methods: Thirty-one patients affected by T1D were enrolled. All participants were evaluated using OCTA. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and superficial and deep macular vessel density (VD) were analyzed. The correlation of these parameters with metabolic factors such as body mass index (BMI), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and the type of insulin therapy (multiple daily injections, MDI vs. continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, CSII) was determined. (3) Results: None of the OCTA parameters were significantly different between the groups. The patients' HbA1C level did not influence any of the OCTA parameters. The use of MDI tended to reduce the parafoveal and perifoveal deep VD (p = 0.048 and p = 0.021, respectively) compared to CSII. An elevated BMI tended to increase the deep macular (p = 0.005) and perifoveal VD (p = 0.006). (4) Conclusion: VD and FAZ are normal in pubescent children with T1D without signs of DR. Treatment with CSII may be a better choice compared to MDI, as CSII may be protective against retinal microvascular damage. Our results indicate the need for new clinical parameters of glycemic control in addition to HbA1c which could assess the risk of DR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alterations in macular thickness and vascular density before clinically visible diabetic retinopathy (DR) remain inconclusive. This study aimed to determine whether retinal manifestations in abnormal glucose metabolism (AGM) patients differ from those in the healthy individuals. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched between 2000 and 2021. The eligibility criteria were AGM patients without DR. Primary and secondary outcomes measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) were analyzed and expressed as standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A random-effects model was used in the data synthesis. The potential publication bias for the variables was evaluated using Egger's test. RESULTS A total of 86 observational studies involving 13,773 participants and 15,416 eyes were included. OCT revealed that compared to healthy controls, the total macular thickness of AGM patients was thinner, including the thickness of fovea (-0.24, 95% CI [-0.39, -0.08]; P = 0.002, I2 = 87.7%), all regions of parafovea (-0.32, 95% CI [-0.54, -0.11]; P = 0.003; I2 = 71.7%) and the four quadrants of perifovea; the thickness of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), macular retinal nerve fiber layer (mRNFL), and ganglion cell layer (GCL) also decreased. OCTA indicated that the superficial and deep vascular density decreased, the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area enlarged, and the acircularity index (AI) reduced in AGM individuals. CONCLUSIONS Retinal thinning and microvascular lesions have occurred before the advent of clinically detectable DR; OCT and OCTA may have the potential to detect these preclinical changes. Abstract
PURPOSE Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic disease characterized by psychomotor delay, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and endocrine problems. Retinal involvement, which is not well characterized, has also been described. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to describe the characteristics in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCTA) of patients with WBS. METHODS We included patients with WBS confirmed by genetic analysis. The patients underwent OCT (30° × 25°, 61 B-scans) and OCTA (10° × 10° and 20° × 20°) examinations, all centered on the. Data on retinal thickness (total, inner and outer layers) and foveal morphology on OCT and vessel and perfusion density in OCTA (VD and PD, respectively) were collected. These data were compared with an age-matched control group. RESULTS 22 eyes of 22 patients with WBS (10 females, mean age 31.5 years) were included. Retinal thickness (and specifically inner retinal layers) in OCT was significantly reduced in all sectors (central, parafoveal, and perifoveal) compared to the control group (p < 0.001 in all sectors). Fovea in WBS eyes was broader and shallower than controls. The PD and VD in both 10 and 20 degrees of fields in OCTA was significantly reduced in patients with WBS, in all vascular plexa (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to quantify and demonstrate retinal structural and microvascular alterations in patients with WBS. Further studies with longitudinal data will reveal the potential clinical relevance of these alterations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate changes in pattern electroretinogram (pERG) and pattern visual evoked potentials (pVEP) in patients with long-lasting type 1 diabetes without diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS Prospective study involving 92 eyes divided into two groups. The diabetic group included 46 eyes of 23 patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM); the control group included 23 age-matched healthy subjects. pERG and pVEP were assessed using the RETI-port/scan21 recording software (version 1021.3.0.0). RESULTS Mean age was 48 ± 9.77 years for the diabetic group and 51.7 ± 4.75 years for the control group. The mean duration of diabetes was 28.88 ± 8.04 years. The mean HbA1c value was 7.29 ± 0.89%. There were no differences in the age or sex distribution. Regarding the pERG, T1DM patients exhibited a significant decrease in the amplitude of the P50 and N95 waves compared to the control group (p = 0.018 and p = 0.035, respectively), with no differences in the peak time of each component. pVEP showed no significant changes in either peak time or amplitude of the different components. CONCLUSIONS Long-term T1DM patients without DR showed changes in the amplitude of pERG waves with preserved peak times. We did not observe modifications in pVEP. pERG may serve as a subclinical marker of ganglion cell damage in long-term T1DM patients.

Abstract
Retinal blood vessels are the only directly observed blood vessels in the body; changes in them can help effective assess the occurrence and development of ocular and systemic diseases. The specificity and efficiency of retinal vessel quantification technology has improved with the advancement of retinal imaging technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms; it has garnered attention in clinical research and applications for the diagnosis and treatment of common eye and related systemic diseases. A few articles have reviewed this topic; however, a summary of recent research progress in the field is still needed. This article aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the research and applications of retinal vessel quantification technology in ocular and systemic diseases, which could update clinicians and researchers on the recent progress in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To compare the vascular structures of the retina and choroid in Chinese Han and Uygur populations with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) using swept-source OCTA (SS-OCTA). METHODS Fifty-three eyes of 53 healthy volunteers (25 from Hans and 28 from Uygurs) and 40 eyes of 40 PDR patients (20 from Hans and 20 from Uygurs) were included. Retinal and choroidal parameters, including thickness, vessel flow density (VFD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, choroidal vascularity volume and index (CVV and CVI) were evaluated. RESULTS Compared with the respective controls, superficial capillary plexus (SCP)-VFD and deep capillary plexus (DCP)-VFD, the areas of FAZ in SCP and DCP were significantly decreased in both Han and Uygur PDR patients. choroidal parameters analysis found that Uygur controls had substantially higher choroidal thickness (CT) than Han controls (p = 0.020) and PDR eyes showed significantly decreased CT. Both races with PDR exhibited significantly reduced choriocapillaris layer-VFD, large and medium choroidal vessel (LMCV) layer-VFD, CVV and CVI, however, Uygur PDR patients had significant lower LMCV layer-VFD, CVV and CVI compared to Han PDR patients. Diabetes duration was the most significant factor affecting CVV and CVI. CONCLUSION Both Han and Uygur PDR patients had significantly lower CT and decreased vessel densities compared to controls, but the Uygur PDR patients had more severe choroidal damage than Han PDR patients, which is most likely related to worse visual prognosis. These findings indicate that more frequent screenings and prompt therapy are urgent for Uygur PDR patients.

Abstract
AIMS Early detection of retinal microangiopathy in patients with prediabetes may reduce diabetic retinopathy complications. The aim of this study was to assess early macular vascular changes in prediabetics before development of over diabetes using OCTA and fundus photography. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 66 prediabetic individuals and 66 normal controls underwent clinical, laboratory, and fundus photography evaluation followed by OCTA macular imaging to examine for the foveal avascular zone, and area of capillary non-perfusion, thickness, disorganization of vessels, and vessel density perfusion percentage of superficial capillary plexus and deep capillary plexus. RESULTS Retinal microangiopathy was detected in 36.4% of prediabetics by OCTA and only in 10.6% by fundus photography. None of clinical or laboratory parameters had significant association with DR. Area of capillary non-perfusion and disorganization of SCP were detected in 53.8% and 56.8%, respectively, in prediabetics. VDP of SCP and DCP of whole image, parafoveal, and perifoveal areas was significantly lower in prediabetes group compared to normal control. VDP of DCP of perifoveal area (β coefficient: - 0.10, OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86-0.96, P < 0.001) and disorganization of DCP (β coefficient: 1.93, OR: 6.89, 95% CI: 2.5-18.8, P < 0.001) were significant predictors of DR in prediabetics. There was no difference in FAZ in prediabetics with and without retinopathy. CONCLUSIONS OCTA could detect early retinal vascular changes during the prediabetic state before developing diabetes. VDP was significantly reduced in prediabetic patients. Furthermore, VDP of DCP of perifoveal area and disorganization of DCP were the most important predictors of retinopathy in prediabetic patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess if optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) measures are associated with the development and worsening of diabetic retinopathy (DR) over four years. METHODS 280 participants with type 2 diabetes underwent ultra-wide field fundus photography, OCT and OCTA. OCT-derived macular thickness measures, retinal nerve fibre layer and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness and OCTA-derived foveal avascular zone area, perimeter, circularity, vessel density (VD) and macular perfusion (MP) were examined in relation to the development and worsening of DR over four years. RESULTS After four years, 206 eyes of 219 participants were eligible for analysis. 27 of the 161 eyes (16.7%) with no DR at baseline developed new DR, which was associated with a higher baseline HbA1c and longer diabetes duration. Of the 45 eyes with non-proliferative DR (NPDR) at baseline, 17 (37.7%) showed DR progression. Baseline VD (12.90 vs. 14.90 mm/mm2, p = 0.032) and MP (31.79% vs. 36.96%, p = 0.043) were significantly lower in progressors compared to non-progressors. Progression of DR was inversely related to VD ((hazard ratio [HR] = 0.825) and to MP (HR = 0.936). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for VD was AUC = 0.643, with 77.4% sensitivity and 41.8% specificity for a cut-off of 15.85 mm/mm2 and for MP it was AUC = 0.635, with 77.4% sensitivity and 25.5% specificity for a cut-off of 40.8%. CONCLUSIONS OCTA metrics have utility in predicting progression rather than the development of DR in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the value of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) metrics in the early diagnosis of vascular complications in diabetes. METHODS All participants underwent OCTA with a swept-source OCT device. Automated measurements of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, vessel density (VD), and blood flow density (BFD) of both 3 × 3 and 6 × 6 windows were then obtained after a quality check. RESULTS Diagnostic models based on multiple risk factors were developed separately for diabetic retinopathy and carotid atherosclerosis using random forest and multivariate logistic regression methods. The addition of specific OCTA metrics improved the diagnostic prediction of DR compared with the models of risk factors alone (Inner Retinal Blood Flow Density in 3 × 3 window, IRBFD; Brier score 0.124 vs. 0.149; AUC, 0.887 vs. 0.836) (Central Retinal Blood Flow Density in 3 × 3 window, CRBFD; Brier score 0.142 vs. 0.149; AUC, 0.851 vs. 0.836). Adding diabetic peripheral vascular disease (DPVD) indicator improved the prediction of carotid atherosclerosis (Brier score, 0.180 vs. 0.192; AUC, 0.802 vs. 0.781. The FAZ in the 3 × 3 window also achieved this effect when targeting only T2DM patients (AUC, 0.797 vs. 0.766; Brier score, 0.183 vs. 0.195). CONCLUSIONS Focusing on IRBFD and CRBFD in the 3 × 3 window of OCTA allows for a more sensitive prediction of the occurrence of DR in diabetic patients. Meanwhile, the quantitative microvascular information provided by OCTA and the occurrence of DPVD may be crucial for diagnosing carotid atherosclerosis. For T2DM patients, we also propose the possibility of FAZ in the 3 × 3 window as a potential diagnostic indicator.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the impact of lens opacity on the reliability of optical coherence tomography angiography metrics and to find a vessel caliber threshold that is reproducible in cataract patients. METHODS A prospective cohort study of 31 patients, examining one eye per patient, by applying 3 × 3 mm macular optical coherence tomography angiography before (18.94 ± 12.22 days) and 3 months (111 ± 23.45 days) after uncomplicated cataract surgery. We extracted superficial (SVC) and deep vascular plexuses (DVC) for further analysis and evaluated changes in image contrast, vessel metrics (perfusion density, flow deficit and vessel-diameter index) and foveal avascular area (FAZ). RESULTS After surgery, the blood flow signal in smaller capillaries was enhanced as image contrast improved. Signal strength correlated to average lens density defined by objective measurement in Scheimpflug images (Pearson's r: -.40, p: .027) and to flow deficit (r= -.70, p < .001). Perfusion density correlated to the signal strength index (r = .70, p < .001). Vessel metrics and FAZ area, except for FAZ area in DVC, were significantly different after cataract surgery, but the mean change was approximately 3-6%. A stepwise approach in extracting vessels according to their pixel caliber showed a threshold of > 6 pixels caliber (∼20-30 µm) was comparable before and after lens removal. CONCLUSION In patients with cataract, OCTA vessel metrics should be interpreted with caution. In addition to signal strength, contrast and pixel properties can serve as supplementary quality metrics to improve the interpretation of OCTA metrics. Vessels with ∼20-30 µm in caliber seem to be reproducible.

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy is the retinal disease associated with hyperglycemia in patients who suffer from type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It includes maculopathy, involving the central retina and characterized by ischemia and/or edema, and peripheral retinopathy that progresses to a proliferative stage with neovascularization. Approximately 10% of the global population is estimated to suffer from diabetes, and around one in 5 of these individuals have diabetic retinopathy. One of the major effects of hyperglycemia is oxidative stress, the pathological state in which elevated production of reactive oxygen species damages tissues, cells, and macromolecules. The retina is relatively prone to oxidative stress due to its high metabolic activity. This review provides a summary of the role of oxidative stress in diabetic retinopathy, including a description of the retinal cell players and the molecular mechanisms. It discusses pathological processes, including the formation and effects of advanced glycation end-products, the impact of metabolic memory, and involvements of non-coding RNA. The opportunities for the therapeutic blockade of oxidative stress in diabetic retinopathy are also considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Vascular factors are involved in the development of glaucoma, including diseases such as hypercholesterolemia (HC), systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), and diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of glaucoma disease on peripapillary vessel density (sPVD) and macular vessel density (sMVD) on the superficial vascular plexus, controlling differences on comorbidities such as SAH, DM and HC between glaucoma patients and normal subjects. METHODS In this prospective, unicenter, observational cross-sectional study, sPVD and sMVD were measured in 155 glaucoma patients and 162 normal subjects. Differences between normal subjects and glaucoma patients' groups were analyzed. A linear regression model with 95% confidence and 80% statistical power was performed. RESULTS Parameters with greater effect on sPVD were glaucoma diagnosis, gender, pseudophakia and DM. Glaucoma patients had a sPVD 1.2% lower than healthy subjects (Beta slope 1.228; 95%CI 0.798-1.659, p < 0.0001). Women presented 1.19% more sPVD than men (Beta slope 1.190; 95%CI 0.750-1.631, p < 0.0001), and phakic patients presented 1.7% more sPVD than men (Beta slope 1.795; 95%CI 1.311-2.280, p < 0.0001). Furthermore, DM patients had 0.9% lower sPVD than non-diabetic patients (Beta slope 0.925; 95%CI 0.293-1.558, p = 0.004). SAH and HC did not affect most of the sPVD parameters. Patients with SAH and HC showed 1.5% lower sMVD in the outer circle than subjects without those comorbidities (Beta slope 1.513; 95%CI 0.216-2.858, p = 0.021 and 1.549; 95%CI 0.240-2.858, p = 0.022 respectively. CONCLUSIONS Glaucoma diagnosis, previous cataract surgery, age and gender seem to have greater influence than the presence of SAH, DM and HC on sPVD and sMVD, particularly sPVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ophthalmologists treat diabetic macular edema before cataract surgery to reduce possible complications. Despite improvements in diagnostic techniques, whether cataract surgery per se causes the progression of diabetic retinopathy with macular edema remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of phacoemulsification on the central retina and its correlation with diabetes compensation as well as changes in the retina before surgery. METHODS Thirty-four type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery were included in this prospective longitudinal study. Of them, 29.4% had macular edema before surgery, and 70.6% had a normal macular structure. All patients underwent ophthalmic examinations, including optical coherence tomography angiography, at baseline and at one and three months after surgery. The Mann-Whitney test was performed to compare the area of the foveal avascular zone, perimeter of the foveal avascular zone, and mean vascular density in the para- and perifoveal deep and superficial capillary plexuses. All parameters were measured before and at one and three months after surgery. Multiple linear regression models with adjustments for glycated hemoglobin and duration of diabetes mellitus were constructed to assess the association between the area of the foveal avascular zone and diabetic macular edema. RESULTS Significant differences in the area of the foveal avascular zone, perimeter of the foveal avascular zone, and perifoveal density in the deep capillary plexus were observed at all three time points. In the fully adjusted linear regression model, those without diabetic macular edema had a reduced probability for changes in the foveal avascular zone at one and three months after surgery (effect estimate β = -0.20 [95% CI -0.31; -0.09] and β = -0.13 [-0.22; -0.03] for one and three months, respectively) compared with those with diabetic macular edema. CONCLUSIONS Cataract surgery itself does not cause significant and permanent increase in diabetic macular edema three months post-surgery. On the contrary, in a group with diabetic macular edema before the surgery, central retinal thickness tended to stabilize three months after surgery. If the duration of diabetes is shorter and diabetes is better compensated, the possibility of changes in the foveal avascular zone is reduced.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus can cause diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, optic neuropathy, cataract or dysfunction of the eye muscles. The incidence of these disorders correlates with disease duration and quality of metabolic control. Regular ophthalmological examinations are needed to prevent sight-threatening advanced stages of diabetic eye diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The goal of this study was to investigate macular microvascular changes using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) at one year after successful rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery. METHODS We performed a cross-section study including RRD treated by pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with or without scleral buckling and SF6 tamponade. After 12 months, DRI-Triton SS-OCTA was performed. Superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses (SCP and DCP), choriocapillaris (CC) vessel density (VD), and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) morphology were analyzed. Results were compared with the unaffected contralateral eye. RESULTS Sixty eyes were included. We observed an increase in VD in the central area of both the SCP and DCP in macula-off eyes treated with PPV + SB and in the SCP of macula-off eyes treated with PPV. Macula-off eyes had a diminished VD for both plexuses in the superior quadrant and in the SCP inferior quadrant in those treated with PPV + SB. The CC flow was diminished in the temporal quadrant of macular-off eyes treated with PPV + SB. Healthy eyes presented higher diameter values than macula-off eyes treated with PPV + SB. FAZ horizontal and vertical diameters were smaller in patients with macula-off RRD vs. macula-on RRD and control groups. CONCLUSION Macular vascularity remains almost unchanged one year after successful RRD surgery, irrespective of the surgical technique or prior macular status.

Abstract
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging has played a pivotal role in the field of retina. This light-based, non-invasive imaging modality provides high-quality, cross-sectional analysis of the retina and has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of retinal and choroidal diseases. Since its introduction in the early 1990s, OCT technology has continued to advance to provide quicker acquisition times and higher resolution. In this manuscript, we discuss some of the most recent advances in OCT technology and techniques for choroidal and retinal diseases. The emerging innovations discussed include wide-field OCT, adaptive optics OCT, polarization sensitive OCT, full-field OCT, hand-held OCT, intraoperative OCT, at-home OCT, and more. The applications of these rising OCT systems and techniques will allow for a closer monitoring of chorioretinal diseases and treatment response, more robust analysis in basic science research, and further insights into surgical management. In addition, these innovations to optimize visualization of the choroid and retina offer a promising future for advancing our understanding of the pathophysiology of chorioretinal diseases.

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most severe and frequent retinal vascular disease that causes significant visual loss on a global scale. The purpose of our study was to evaluate retinal vascularization in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), the deep capillary plexus (DCP) and the choriocapillaris (CC) and changes in the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) by optical tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) with moderate DR but without diabetic macular oedema (DME). Fifty-four eyes of DM2 with moderate DR (level 43 in the ETDRS scale) and without DME and 73 age-matched healthy eyes were evaluated using OCTA with swept-source (SS)-OCT to measure microvascularization changes in SCP, DCP, CC and the FAZ. The mean ages were 64.06 ± 11.98 and 60.79 ± 8.62 years in the DM2 and control groups, respectively. Visual acuity (VA) was lower in the DM2 patients (p = 0.001), OCTA showed changes in the SCP with a significant diminution in the vascular density and the FAZ area was significantly higher compared to healthy controls, with p < 0.001 at the SCP level. The most prevalent anatomical alterations were peripheral disruption in the SCP (83.3%), microaneurysms (MA) in the SCP and in the DCP (79.6% and 79.6%, respectively) and flow changes in the DCP (81.5%). A significant positive correlation was observed between the DM2 duration and the FAZ area in the SCP (0.304 with p = 0.025). A significant negative correlation was also found between age and CC central perfusion (p < 0.001). In summary, a decrease in the vascular density in DM2 patients with moderate DR without DME was observed, especially at the retinal SPC level. Furthermore, it was found that the FAZ was increased in the DM2 group in both retinal plexuses and was greater in the SCP group.
