Electrochemical Sensing of Cadmium and Lead Ions in Water by MOF-5/PANI Composites

For the first time, composites of metal-organic framework MOF-5 and conjugated polymer polyaniline (PANI), (MOF-5/PANI), prepared using PANI in its conducting (emeraldine salt, ES) or nonconducting form (emeraldine base, EB) at various MOF-5 and PANI mass ratios, were evaluated as electrode materials for the electrochemical detection of cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions in aqueous solutions. Testing of individual components of composites, PANI-ES, PANI-EB, and MOF-5, was also performed for comparison. Materials are characterized by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), and their electrochemical behavior was discussed in terms of their zeta potential, structural, morphology, and textural properties. All examined composites showed high electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of Cd and Pb to Cd2+ and Pb2+, respectively. The MOF/EB-1 composite (71.0 wt.% MOF-5) gave the highest oxidation currents during both individual and simultaneous detection of two heavy metal ions. Current densities recorded with MOF/EB-1 were also higher than those of its individual components, reflecting the synergistic effect where MOF-5 offers high surface area for two heavy metals adsorption and PANI offers a network for electron transfer during metals' subsequent oxidation. Limits of detection using MOF/EB-1 electrode for Cd2+ and Pb2+ sensing were found to be as low as 0.077 ppm and 0.033 ppm, respectively. Moreover, the well-defined and intense peaks of Cd oxidation to Cd2+ and somewhat lower peaks of Pb oxidation to Pb2+ were observed at voltammograms obtained for the Danube River as a real sample with no pretreatment, which implies that herein tested MOF-5/PANI electrodes could be used as electrochemical sensors for the detection of heavy metal ions in the real water samples.

Graphene oxide-manganese oxide composite as an electrocatalyst for simultaneous detection of manganese- and chromium-contaminated water

The development of a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor for simultaneous quantification of manganese (Mn(II)) and chromium (Cr(VI)) using composite of graphene oxide (GO) and manganese oxide modified screen printed carbon electrode (GO-Mn2O3/SPCE) is reported for the first time. The good sensing performance is achieved by mixing GO prepared by modified Hummer's method (GO-H) with proper particle size of Mn2O3 (241 nm). The mechanism of this sensor is based on the formation of Mn-O and Cr-O on the modified electrode with assistance of oxygen moieties provided by both Mn2O3 NPs and GO. The analytical performances were investigated by measuring electrochemical signal of Mn(II) and Cr(VI) by using square-wave cathodic stripping voltammetry (SWCSV). This sensor holds low electrode-to-electrode variation (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 4%) with a good limit of detection (LOD) at about 6.67 and 11.20 μg⋅L-1 for Mn(II) and Cr(VI), respectively. Applicability of this sensor was demonstrated by measuring Mn(II) and Cr(VI) in tap water samples with recovery of 90.77-103.45% and 82.34-103.73% for Mn(II) and Cr(VI) determinations, respectively. With the contribution of both GO and Mn2O3 as electrocatalysts, this developed sensor is capable to be used for water quality monitoring in real samples.

Electrochemical and Spectroscopic (FTIR) Evidence of Conducting Polymer-Cu Ions Interaction

In this work, we provide electrochemical and spectroscopic evidence of the conducting polymer-heavy metal ion interaction by comparing the electrochemical and spectroscopic behavior (FTIR) of two different conducting polymer-modified electrodes based on 3,4-alkoxythiophenes: 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and ortho-xylen-3,4-dioxythiophene (XDOT) during the potentiodynamic stripping of copper. By analyzing the electrochemical and spectroscopic results, it is possible to propose two different copper dissolution processes during the electrochemical stripping process, which depend on the conducting polymer used. With PEDOT matrix, stripping occurs in a two-step pathway, observed as two anodic peaks, involving the formation of the Cu⁺-PEDOT complex and the subsequent oxidation step of the Cu⁺ complex to release Cu²⁺ ions. On the other side, the experiments carried out let us propose the formation of a poorly stable Cu²⁺-PXDOT complex or a superficial mechanism for the Cu²⁺ release, characterized by a single stripping signal for this process. Thus, the incorporation of Cu ions into the matrix and the stripping release are intimately related to the chemical structure of the polymer used.

Advances in the Removal of Cr(III) from Spent Industrial Effluents-A Review

The review presents advances in the removal of Cr(III) from the industrial effluents published in the last ten years. Although Cr(III) has low solubility and is less dangerous for the aquatic environment than Cr(VI), it cannot be released into the aquatic environment without limitations and its content in water should be restricted. The development of efficient techniques for the removal of Cr(III) is also a response to the problem of chromium wastewater containing Cr(VI) ions. Very often the first step in dealing with such wastewater is the reduction in chromium content. In some cases, removal of Cr(III) from wastewaters is an important step for pretreatment of solutions to prepare them for subsequent recovery of other metals. In the review, hydrometallurgical operations for Cr(III) removal are presented, including examples of Cr(III) recovery from real industrial effluents with precipitation, adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, membrane techniques, microbial-enhanced techniques, electrochemical methods. The advantages and disadvantages of the operations mentioned are also presented. Finally, perspectives for the future in line with circular economy and low-environmental impact are briefly discussed.
