Abstract
In recent years, the toxicity of microplastics (MPs) in combination with heavy metals, particularly the influence of varying microplastic sizes on their toxic effects, has attracted widespread attention. In this study, red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkia) were exposed to MPs of two particle sizes (S-MPs: 5 μm, 1 mg/L; and L-MPs: 100 μm, 1 mg/L) and Cu (5 mg/L) individually or in combination for 96 h. The accumulation patterns of MPs were as follows: gills > intestines > hepatopancreas > muscles. Moreover, the accumulation pattern of Cu was as follows: intestines > gills > hepatopancreas > muscle. Additionally, S-MPs and L-MPs enhanced Cu accumulation, with the highest levels observed in the S-MPs+Cu-treated group. Histopathological analysis showed that the combined exposure led to greater hepatopancreatic damage. Assessment of antioxidant enzymes showed decreased activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione among the different treatments, except for malondialdehyde, which was elevated compared to the control group. In the S-MPs+Cu-treated group, the expression levels of Cu homeostasis genes (MTF-1, ATP2, Atox1, MT) were significantly lower than those in the Cu treated group. This study provides a valuable reference for studying the combined toxic effects of MPs with varying particle sizes on heavy metals.

Abstract
Pollution in urban environments is a major health concern for humans as well as the local wildlife and aquatic species. Anthropogenic waste and discharge from storm drainage accumulate nutrients and environmental contaminants in local water systems. Locating contaminated sites using water samples over the vast landscape is a daunting task. Crayfish thrive in urban environments and have been used for biomonitoring pollutants. This study aimed to use crayfish as sentinels to monitor for elements in local environments. In this study, crayfish were used to measure metals and metalloids in lotic environments using ICP-OES analysis of abdominal and exoskeletal tissue. Using cluster analysis, geographical zones of trace element accumulation were determined. Eighteen total elements were analysed providing baseline data on local genera, biometric data, and element concentrations averaging 267.3 mg/kg Mn in the exoskeleton and with Zn averaging 6.88 mg/kg being significantly higher in the abdomen. Correlations of elements with biometric data allowed for internal analyses of elements. The elements As, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Tl demonstrated equivalent concentrations in both tissues. The crayfish locations with high abundance of elements allowed for the determination of contaminated areas with higher accumulations being areas of active urban development. These analyses gave measurable results of metal and metalloid to pinpoint potential sources of pollutants. Since crayfish are consumed globally as a food source, these methods can be used to determine the risk of toxic metals being passed through the food chain to the public.

Abstract
Heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic are environmental pollutants that accumulate in ecosystems and pose significant health risks to humans and wildlife, primarily through food chain contamination where plants absorb heavy metals, affecting their growth and threatening consumer health. Cognitive and cardiovascular functions are particularly affected by exposure to heavy metals even at low concentrations through the induction of oxidative stress. Various analytical techniques are used in measuring heavy metals in different environmental and biological samples. The atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) offers low cost, simplicity, and portability but lacks sensitivity for certain metals. Although more sensitive, the high cost of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) may limit laboratory accessibility. The inductively coupled plasma with atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) is known for its broad dynamic linear range and ability to identify minute variations in concentration. Atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) is considered a powerful tool for quantifying heavy metals due to its high sensitivity, low detection limits, and wide linear range. The current article reviews heavy metal pollution's impact on health and spectrometric techniques for the detection of these contaminants. This may help efforts of international, and regional policies towards preventing this health hazard problem.

Abstract
The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) was introduced from Japan to China in the 1920s. Crayfish are now widely distributed in almost all types of freshwater wetlands, including rice fields, ditches, swamps, lakes, and ponds in most provinces of China, owing to their multi-directional movement, rapid growth, adaptability to the environment, and relatively high fecundity. The delectable taste and high nutritional value of crayfish have made them popular among consumers, leading to the significant development of red swamp crayfish farming in the last two decades. Currently, it represents the largest proportion of commercially farmed freshwater crustaceans in China and has become an integral component of China's aquatic economy. Crayfish are highly valued for their edibility and for their by-products, which have various important uses. This review discusses nutrient composition, active ingredients, safety evaluation, processing and preservation, and comprehensive utilization of crayfish by-products to explore and organize the existing knowledge about crayfish and to promote the growth of the crayfish industry. This comprehensive review aims to provide a basis for the optimal utilization and sustainable development of crayfish resources worldwide.

Abstract
Prometryn is commonly used in agricultural and non-agricultural settings. However, possible harm to aquatic organisms remains a persistent concern. Prometryn was also the only one of the 26 triazine herbicides detected in this study. Numerous studies have assessed the harmful effects of prometryn in teleost fish and shrimp. There is a lack of information regarding the ecological and human health risks, as well as the toxic mechanisms affecting crayfish. In this study, human health risk assessment (THQ) and ecological risk assessment (RQ) were conducted on P. clarkii in the rice-crayfish co-culture (IRCC) farming model. The 96 h of exposure to 0.286 mg/L and 1.43 mg/L prometryn was conducted to investigate the potential effects and molecular mechanisms of hepatopancreatic resistance to prometryn in P. clarkii. The original sample analysis revealed that the THQ calculated from the prometryn levels in the muscle and hepatopancreas was below 0.1, suggesting no threat to human health. However, the calculated RQ values were >0.1, indicating a risk to P. clarkii. Histological analysis and biochemical index detection of the experimental samples revealed that the hepatopancreatic injury and oxidative damage in P. clarkii were caused by prometryn. Moreover, transcriptome analysis identified 2512 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after 96 h of prometryn exposure. Prometryn exposure caused significant changes in metabolic pathways, including oxoacid metabolic processes and cytochrome P450-associated drug metabolism. Further hub gene analysis via PPI indicated that exposure to prometryn may inhibit lipid synthesis, storage, and amino acid transport and affect glucose metabolic pathways and hormone synthesis. Additionally, we hypothesized that prometryn-triggered cell death could be linked to the PI3K-Akt signaling cascade. This study's findings have significant meaning for the efficient and logical application of herbicides in IRCC, ultimately aiding in advancing a highly productive agricultural system.

Abstract
Microalgae are a promising sustainable food source with high nutritional value and environmental benefits. This study investigated the presence of toxic metals and rare earth elements (REEs) in 68 microalgal-based food products and conducted a probabilistic risk assessment to evaluate potential health risks. The findings revealed high detection rates of REEs (80.96% to 100%) and heavy metals (83.82% to 100%), with REE concentrations ranging from 0.0055 to 0.5207 mg/kg. Heavy metals were detected at the following average concentrations: As (2.80 mg/kg) > Cr (1.27 mg/kg) > Pb (0.30 mg/kg) > Cd (0.20 mg/kg) > Hg (0.01 mg/kg). Carcinogenic risk analysis for Cd (3.004 × 10-3), Cr (1.484 × 10-3), and As (1.1283 × 10-2) indicated that 95th percentile values exceeded established safety thresholds (10-4). These findings highlight the critical need for stringent monitoring and the establishment of comprehensive regulatory frameworks for the safety of novel microalgae foods.

Abstract
Mud crab, one of the aquatic organisms found in estuary areas, has become a significant economic source of seafood for communities due to its delectable taste. However, they face the threat of heavy metal contamination, which may adversely affect their biological traits. This study explored the comparison of the mud crabs collected from Setiu Wetland as a reference site, while Kuala Sepetang is an area that contains a higher concentration of heavy metals than Setiu Wetlands. Heavy metal levels were quantified using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), while proteomes were assessed using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics, respectively. Heavy metal contamination affects the proteome, metabolome, and putative molecular targets in mud crabs (Scylla olivacea), leading to oxidative stress. Mud crabs collected from the metal-polluted area of Kuala Sepetang in Perak had considerably elevated concentrations of nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd) in comparison to the reference site of Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu. The proteome analysis revealed an upregulation of the stress-response protein Hsp70, which triggered superoxide dismutase (SOD) and increased arginine kinase expression (5.47 fold) in the muscle tissue, results in the alteration of metabolite regulation in the mud crab from Kuala Sepetang. Additionally, in the muscle tissues of mud crabs obtained from Kuala Sepetang, uncharacterized myosin-tail 1 domain proteins and sarcoplasmic calcium-binding proteins were downregulated. The metabolomic investigation identified changes in metabolites associated with energy metabolism and osmoregulation. Exploration of docking analysis suggests potential connections between methylarsonic acid and essential proteins in mud crabs. These findings suggest that the presence of heavy metals disrupts physiological processes and highlights potential molecular targets that warrant further investigation.

Abstract
The present study was designed to determine the levels of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, Zn, Mn, Cd, and Co), Mn, and As in Iranian-grown rice and imported rice consumed in Neyshabur City. For this research, 90 samples from 30 different brands widely consumed in this city were collected. The content of heavy metals and the health risks associated with their use were then studied. The study found that Zn (14.21 mg kg-1) had the highest content in Iranian and imported rice varieties, whereas Cd (0.02 mg kg-1) had the lowest value. The health risk assessment was also done in three scenarios and separately for two types of rice. The results showed that the total hazard quotient (i.e., THQ) was measured for all metals and all three scenarios, and for both types of rice, it is THQ > 1, which indicates the risk of non-carcinogenic in rice. The cancer risk for three scenarios and two types of imported and Iranian rice is in the unsafe range for As (8.80 × 10-4 to 7.00 × 10-3), Ni (4.60 × 10-4 to 3.60 × 10-3) and Cr (2.20 × 10-4 to 1.90 × 10-3) and negligible for Pb (1.09 × 10-6 to 1.49 × 10-5) and Cd (7.83 × 10-6 to 8.20 × 10-5).

Abstract
Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), a novel class of persistent pollutants, are widely distributed in the environment, and their potential health risks have garnered significant global attention in recent years. Crayfish is a popular freshwater crustacean product in China primarily sourced from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The purpose of this study was to investigate the exposure levels of OPFRs in crayfish, assess the health and safety risks associated with crayfish consumption, and explore the bioaccumulation of OPFRs in environmental water and sediment on crayfish. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was employed to analyze 7 common OPFRs in 106 crayfish samples and 76 environmental samples. The results revealed that OPFRs were detected at a high frequency of 100 % in crayfish, with tripropyl phosphate (TPP) being the predominant pollutant found in edible portions while also exhibiting secondary contamination within the crayfish food chain. Monte Carlo modeling combined with @risk risk assessment software demonstrated that TPP present in crayfish muscles had the most substantial impact on health effects, however, overall OPFR exposure did not pose significant risks to human health. Furthermore, analysis of OPFRs bioenrichment ability indicated that crayfish predominantly accumulated these compounds within their edible parts from surrounding environmental water sources, particularly highlighting TPP's potential for bioaccumulation.

Abstract
Due to rapidly expanding crayfish consumption worldwide, the food safety of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is of great concern. China is the largest consumer and producer of crayfish globally. As of yet, it is unknown whether the main crayfish production cities in China are within safe levels of toxic heavy metals and metalloids. For 16 consecutive years, Qianjiang city ranked first in China in processing export volumes of red swamp crayfish. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the enrichment levels and associated health risks of the species in Qianjiang. In our research, samples of four crayfish tissues, including the head, hepatopancreas, gills, and muscles, were collected from 38 sampling sites distributed in Qianjiang to evaluate the concentration levels of five heavy metals (Pb, Hg, Cd, As, and Cu). The concentration levels of all five metals in muscle did not surpass the national standard. Furthermore, eight significant correlations have been found. For further in-depth assess risk of crayfish in Qianjiang, estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), carcinogenic risk (CR), and estimated maximum allowable consumption rates (CRmm) were evaluated in the abdomen muscle and hepatopancreas. The THQ values for each metal were found to be less than 1, while the CR values were below 10-6. Additionally, the CRmm for adults was determined to be 17.2 meals per month. These findings, based on the analysis of five metallic elements included in this study, suggest that the consumption of crayfish abdomen muscle in Qianjiang does not pose any significant health risks. However, it is noteworthy that certain regions exhibit elevated levels of arsenic in the hepatopancreas, surpassing the national standard, thereby rendering them unsuitable for excessive consumption. In general, the findings can be used to provide guidance for safe dietary practices in China.

Abstract
Laccases are multicopper oxidases (MCOs) with a broad application spectrum, particularly in second-generation ethanol biotechnology and the bioremediation of xenobiotics and other highly recalcitrant compounds. Synthetic pesticides are xenobiotics with long environmental persistence, and the search for their effective bioremediation has mobilized the scientific community. Antibiotics, in turn, can pose severe risks for the emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms, as their frequent use for medical and veterinary purposes can generate constant selective pressure on the microbiota of urban and agricultural effluents. In the search for more efficient industrial processes, some bacterial laccases stand out for their tolerance to extreme physicochemical conditions and their fast generation cycles. Accordingly, to expand the range of effective approaches for the bioremediation of environmentally important compounds, the prospection of bacterial laccases was carried out from a custom genomic database. The best hit found in the genome of Chitinophaga sp. CB10, a Bacteroidetes isolate obtained from a biomass-degrading bacterial consortium, was subjected to in silico prediction, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation analyses. The putative laccase CB10_180.4889 (Lac_CB10), composed of 728 amino acids, with theoretical molecular mass values of approximately 84 kDa and a pI of 6.51, was predicted to be a new CopA with three cupredoxin domains and four conserved motifs linking MCOs to copper sites that assist in catalytic reactions. Molecular docking studies revealed that Lac_CB10 had a high affinity for the molecules evaluated, and the affinity profiles with multiple catalytic pockets predicted the following order of decreasing thermodynamically favorable values: tetracycline (-8 kcal/mol) > ABTS (-6.9 kcal/mol) > sulfisoxazole (-6.7 kcal/mol) > benzidine (-6.4 kcal/mol) > trimethoprim (-6.1 kcal/mol) > 2,4-dichlorophenol (-5.9 kcal/mol) mol. Finally, the molecular dynamics analysis suggests that Lac_CB10 is more likely to be effective against sulfisoxazole-like compounds, as the sulfisoxazole-Lac_CB10 complex exhibited RMSD values lower than 0.2 nm, and sulfisoxazole remained bound to the binding site for the entire 100 ns evaluation period. These findings corroborate that LacCB10 has a high potential for the bioremediation of this molecule.

Abstract
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is ubiquitous and moderately persistent in the environment, and it is an identified human carcinogen. Previous animal experiments indicate that toxic mechanisms of PCP include oxidative stress. However, no epidemiological study has reported the association between PCP exposure and oxidative stress; such association in pregnant women, a vulnerable population, is of particular interest. This study aimed to characterize PCP concentrations in 2304 urine samples from 768 pregnant women, explore its determinants, and evaluate the associations between PCP exposure and three oxidative stress biomarkers across three trimesters. The median concentrations of PCP (100% detected) in the first, second, and third trimester were 0.61, 0.59, and 0.48 ng/mL, respectively, with a significant decrease trend. The intraclass correlation coefficient of specific gravity (SG)-adjusted PCP was 0.26, indicating high variability for PCP across the three trimesters. PCP concentrations were significantly higher in older, pre-pregnancy overweight, multiparous, high-income, and employed women during pregnancy. Urinary PCP was markedly lower in samples collected during spring compared to other seasons. Linear mixed effect models for repeated measures revealed that ln-transformed SG-adjusted PCP was significantly associated with increased 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG; percent change [%Δ] caused by each interquartile range increase of PCP: 46.2, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 40.2, 52.5) and 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHG;%Δ [95% CI]: 44.8 [40.1, 49.8]), but the positive association with 4-hydroxy2-nonenal-mercapturic acid (HNE-MA) was not significant. PCP was also positively associated with increased 8-OHdG and 8-OHG in each trimester using general linear models, and its associations with HNE-MA were only significant at T1 (%Δ [95% CI]: 19.1 [1.05, 40.3]) and T2 (%Δ [95% CI]: 12.6 [0.32, 26.3]). Our findings provide valuable information about PCP exposure characteristics during pregnancy and the potential effects of PCP exposure on oxidative stress in pregnant women.

Abstract
The current study investigated the effects of various cooking styles (boiling, frying, and steaming) and seasoning methods (home cooking and ready-to-eat commodity) on levels of nine heavy metals in the crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) muscle. The estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotients (THQ), and target cancer risk (TCR) were used to assess the health risk in the crayfish muscle. The results showed that cooking processes significantly increased the concentration of Cu, which raises a potential risk for children (the THQ values > 1). The levels of toxic heavy metals in the ready-to-eat crayfish muscle were significantly higher than those in household cooking. Especially for As, the THQ values rose to 7.1 and 13.2 for adults and children respectively. Therefore, home cooking is safer than ready-to-eat crayfish, and children should consume crayfish within a limited range. The recommended consumption of the cooked abdominal muscle of crayfish should be 257 and 58 g/day, for children (16 kg) and adults (70 kg), respectively.

Abstract
Lake wetland quality has decreased with the elevated concentrations of some trace elements. The consumption of crayfish in the trace elements concentrated lake wetland can be a hazard for the waterbirds and human health. Thus, the bioaccumulations of Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn in sediments and abdominal muscles of Procambarus clarkii in Caohai lake wetland, China were quantified. Sediment-bound Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn were remarkably elevated compared to the parent rock, while 64.71-94.12% of adverse effect index in sediment-bound Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn were > 1. Abdominal muscle-bound Cd, Pb and Zn in several samples were all above the maximum permissible limits. Pb, Zn and Ni in abdominal muscles were significantly linked with those in sediments (R2 =0.60-0.89, p < 0.01) and lake sediment might be the important feed sources of P. clarkii. Target hazard quotients of Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn at the 95th percentile was all below the benchmark, normal consumption of the abdominal muscle of P. clarkii posed low or no probabilistic health risk to the Grus nigricollis and local inhabitants.
