Aquaphotomics Monitoring of Lettuce Freshness during Cold Storage

Combining Feature Extraction Methods and Categorical Boosting to Discriminate the Lettuce Storage Time Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Lettuce is a kind of nutritious leafy vegetable. The lettuce storage time has a significant impact on its nutrition and taste. Therefore, to classify lettuce samples with different storage times accurately and non-destructively, this study built classification models by combining several feature extraction methods and categorical boosting (CatBoost). Firstly, the near-infrared (NIR) spectral data of lettuce samples were collected using a NIR spectrometer, and then they were preprocessed using six preprocessing methods. Next, feature extraction was carried out on the spectral data using approximate linear discriminant analysis (ALDA), common-vector linear discriminant analysis (CLDA), maximum-uncertainty linear discriminant analysis (MLDA), and null-space linear discriminant analysis (NLDA). These four feature extraction methods can solve the problem of small sample sizes. Finally, the classification was achieved using classification and regression trees (CARTs) and CatBoost, respectively. The experimental results showed that the classification accuracy of NLDA combined with CatBoost could reach 97.67%. Therefore, the combination of feature extraction methods (NLDA) and CatBoost using NIR spectroscopy is an effective way to classify lettuce storage time.

Applications of optical sensing and imaging spectroscopy in indoor farming: A systematic review

As demand for food continues to rise, innovative methods are needed to sustainably and efficiently meet the growing pressure on agriculture. Indoor farming and controlled environment agriculture have emerged as promising approaches to address this challenge. However, optimizing fertilizer usage, ensuring homogeneous production, and reducing agro-waste remain substantial challenges in these production systems. One potential solution is the use of optical sensing technology, which can provide real-time data to help growers make informed decisions and enhance their operations. optical sensing can be used to analyze plant tissues, evaluate crop quality and yield, measure nutrients, and assess plant responses to stress. This paper presents a systematic literature review of the current state of using spectral-optical sensors and hyperspectral imaging for indoor farming, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The study surveyed existing studies from 2017 to 2023 to identify gaps in knowledge, provide researchers and farmers with current trends, and offer recommendations and inspirations for possible new research directions. The results of this review will contribute to the development of sustainable and efficient methods of food production.

Simultaneous determination of pigments of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) leaf for quality inspection using hyperspectral imaging and multi-task deep learning regression approaches

Rapid and accurate determination of pigment content is important for quality inspection of spinach leaves during storage. This study aimed to use hyperspectral imaging at two spectral ranges (visible/near-infrared, VNIR: 400-1000 nm; NIR: 900-1700 nm) to simultaneously determine the pigment (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoids) content in spinach stored at different durations and conditions (unpackaged and packaged). Partial least squares (PLS), back propagation neural network (BPNN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) were used to establish single-task and multi-task regression models. Single-task CNN (STCNN) models and multi-task CNN (MTCNN) models obtained better performances than the other models. The models using VNIR spectra were superior to those using NIR spectra. The overall results indicated that hyperspectral imaging with multi-task learning could predict the quality attributes of spinach simultaneously for spinach quality inspection under various storage conditions. This research will guide food quality inspection by simultaneously inspecting multiple quality attributes.

A novel diagnostic approach to Paratuberculosis in dairy cattle using near-infrared spectroscopy and aquaphotomics

Introduction

As a contagious and chronic disease in the livestock industry, Paratuberculosis is a significant threat to dairy herds' genetic and economic resources. Due to intensive breeding and high production of dairy cattle, the incidence and prevalence are higher. Developing non-destructive diagnostic methods for the early detection and identification of healthy animals is paramount for breeding programs. Conventional methods are almost entirely destructive, have low accuracy, lack precision, and are time-consuming. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and aquaphotomics can detect changes in biofluids and thus have the potential to diagnose disease. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic ability of NIRS and aquaphotomics for Paratuberculosis in dairy cattle.

Methods

Blood plasma from dairy cattle was collected in the NIR range (1,300 nm to 1,600 nm) 60 days before and 100 days to 200 days after calving in two groups, positive and negative, using the same consecutive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test results three times as a reference test.

Results

NIRS and aquaphotomics methods invite 100% accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity to detect Paratuberculosis using data mining by unsupervised method, Principal Component Analysis, and supervised methods: Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogiest, Linear Discriminant Analysis, Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, Partial Least Square-Discriminant Analysis, and Support Vector Machine models.

Discussion

The current study found that monitoring blood plasma with NIR spectra provides an opportunity to analyze antibody levels indirectly via changes in water spectral patterns caused by complex physiological changes, such as the amount of antibodies related to Paratuberculosis by aquagram.

An Aquaphotomics Approach for Investigation of Water-Stress-Induced Changes in Maize Plants

The productivity of plants is considerably affected by various environmental stresses. Exploring the specific pattern of the near-infrared spectral data acquired non-destructively from plants subjected to stress can contribute to a better understanding of biophysical and biochemical processes in plants. Experiments for investigating NIR spectra of maize plants subjected to water stress were conducted. Two maize lines were used: US corn-belt inbred line B37 and mutant inbred XM 87-136, characterized by very high drought tolerance. After reaching the 4-leaf stage, 10 plants from each line were subjected to water stress, and 10 plants were used as control, kept under a regular water regime. The drought lasted until day 17 and then the plants were recovered by watering for 4 days. A MicroNIR OnSite-W Spectrometer (VIAVI Solutions Inc., Chandler, AZ, USA) was used for in vivo measurement of each maize leaf spectra. PLS models for determining drought days were created and aquagrams were calculated separately for the plants' second, third, and fourth leaves. Differences in absorption spectra were observed between control, stressed, and recovered maize plants, as well as between different measurement days of stressed plants. Aquagrams were used to visualize the water spectral pattern in maize leaves and how it changes along the drought process.
