Abstract
An imbalanced microbiome is linked to several diseases, such as cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and even neurological disorders. Bacteria and their by-products are used for various industrial and clinical purposes. The metabolites under discussion were chosen based on their biological impacts on host and gut microbiota interactions as established by metabolome research. The separation of bacterial metabolites by using statistics and machine learning analysis creates new opportunities for applications of bacteria and their metabolites in the environmental and medical sciences. Thus, the metabolite production strategies, methodologies, and importance of bacterial metabolites for human well-being are discussed in this review.

Abstract
The intricate relationship between cancer and bacteria has garnered increasing attention in recent years. While traditional cancer research has primarily focused on tumor cells and genetic mutations, emerging evidence highlights the significant role of microbial communities within the tumor microenvironment in cancer development and progression. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of the complex interplay between cancer and bacteria. We explore the diverse ways in which bacteria influence tumorigenesis and tumor behavior, discussing direct interactions between bacteria and tumor cells, their impact on tumor immunity, and the potential modulation of the tumor microenvironment. Additionally, we delve into the mechanisms through which bacterial metabolites and extracellular products May affect cancer pathways. By conducting a thorough analysis of the existing literature, we underscore the multifaceted and intricate relationship between bacteria and cancer. Understanding this complex interplay could pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches and preventive strategies in cancer treatment.

Abstract
Bacterial-based cancer immunotherapy has recently gained widespread attention due to its exceptional mechanism of rich pathogen-associated molecular patterns in anti-cancer immune responses. Contrary to conventional cancer therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and phototherapy, bacteria-based cancer immunotherapy has the unique ability to suppress cancer by selectively accumulating and growing in tumours. In the view of this, several bacterial strains are being used for the treatment of cancer. Of which, lactic acid bacteria are a powerful, albeit still inadequately understood bacteria that possess a wide source of bioactive chemicals. Lactic acid bacteria metabolites, such as bacteriocins, short-chain fatty acids, exopolysaccharides show antitumour property. Amino acid pathways, which have lately been focussed as a new strategy to cancer therapy, are key element of the adaptability and dysregulation of metabolic pathways identified in proliferation of tumour cells. Arginine metabolism, in particular, has been shown to be critical for cancer therapy. As a result, better understanding of arginine metabolism in LAB and cancer cells could lead to new cancer therapeutic targets. This review will outline current advances in the interaction of arginine metabolism with cancer therapy and propose an arginine deiminase expression system to combat cancer more effectively.

Abstract
The cholesterol-lowering and immunomodulatory effects and probiotic properties of 25 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from fermented fish (pla-paeng-daeng) in Thailand were examined in the present study. Based on their phenotypic and genetic characteristics, LAB were identified as Lactiplantibacillus pentosus (Group I, 6 isolates), Lactiplantibacillus argentoratensis (Group II, 1 isolate), Limosilactobacillus fermentum (Group III, 2 isolates), Companilactobacillus pabuli (Group IV, 4 isolates), Companilactobacillus farciminis (Group V, 5 isolates), Companilactobacillus futsaii (Group VI, 6 isolates), and Enterococcus lactis (Group VII, 1 isolate). Lactiplantibacillus pentosus PD3-1 and PD9-2 and Enterococcus lactis PD3-2 exhibited bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activities. The percentage of cholesterol assimilated by all isolates ranged between 21.40 and 54.07%. Bile salt hydrolase-producing isolates tolerated acidic and bile conditions and possessed adhesion properties. They also exerted immunomodulatory effects that affected the production of interleukin-12 (IL-12), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2), and nitric oxide (NO). These isolates meet standard probiotic requirements and exert beneficial effects.

Abstract
Forty-eight lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from fermented mussels in Thailand were evaluated for their probiotic properties, bile salt hydrolase (BSH), cholesterol assimilation and immunomodulatory effects. They were identified as Companilactobacillus formosensis (Group I, 10 isolates), Lentilactobacillus buchneri (Group II, 8 isolates), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum subsp. plantarum (Group III, 16 isolates), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (Group IV, 1 isolate), Pediococcus pentosaceus (Group V, 5 isolates) and P. acidilactici (Group V, 1 isolate), Enterococcus thailandicus (Group VI, 2 isolates), En. hirae (Group VII, 1 isolate), En. durans (Group VI, 1 isolate), Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis (Group VII, 1 isolate), Lc. lactis subsp. hordinae (Group VII, 1 isolate), and Leuconostoc lactis (Group VIII, 1 isolate), based on their phenotypic and genetic characteristics. Seven isolates, L. plantarum subsp. plantarum LM6-1, LM6-2, LM7-2-2B, LM12-1, LM14-1, LM15-1P and LM15-2 expressed bile salt hydrolase activity. All isolates assimilated cholesterol ranging from 20.73 to 79.40%. BSH-producing isolates were tolerant to acidic and bile conditions and showed the adhesion ability to Caco-2 cells. The BSH-producing and selected isolates showed the immunomodulatory effects to stimulate interleukin-12 (IL-12), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), human beta defensin-2 (hBD-2) and nitric oxide (NO) production at various levels. Therefore, these results indicated that the isolates meet the standard probiotic criteria and beneficial effects.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. According to 2022 statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), close to 10 million deaths have been reported in 2020 and it is estimated that the number of cancer cases world-wide could increase to 21.6 million by 2030. Breast, lung, thyroid, pancreatic, liver, prostate, bladder, kidney, pelvis, colon, and rectum cancers are the most prevalent. Each year, approximately 400,000 children develop cancer. Treatment between countries vary, but usually includes either surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. Modern treatments such as hormone-, immuno- and antibody-based therapies are becoming increasingly popular. Several recent reports have been published on toxins, antibiotics, bacteriocins, non-ribosomal peptides, polyketides, phenylpropanoids, phenylflavonoids, purine nucleosides, short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and enzymes with anticancer properties. Most of these molecules target cancer cells in a selective manner, either directly or indirectly through specific pathways. This review discusses the role of bacteria, including lactic acid bacteria, and their metabolites in the treatment of cancer.

Abstract
The analysis of the literature on the microbiome composition and metabolic properties of kefir available at the RSCI and Web of Science was carried out. Kefir has been used by humans for centuries. It is a useful product of mixed lactic and alcoholic fermentation, produced using evolutionally established associative cultures, collected in an aggregated state termed kefir grains. General characterization of kefir grains from the territorial zones of different continents (Russia, Europe, Asia, and America) is provided. The methods for differentiation and identification of individual species are described, as well as their interactions within the community. The diversity of microbial composition of kefir grains depending on local cultivation conditions and storage processes is shown. The microorganisms present in kefir have a number of properties that determine their metabolism, interaction in the community, beneficial effects on human health and immune system, which is important for the prevention and control of bacterial and viral infections, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a prevalent, progressive respiratory disease, has become the third leading cause of death globally. Increasing evidence suggests that intestinal and pulmonary microbiota dysbiosis is associated with COPD. Researchers have shown that T helper (Th) 17/regulatory T (Treg) imbalance is involved in COPD. Qibai Pingfei Capsule (QBPF) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat COPD clinically in China. However, the effects of QBPF intervention on the Th17/Treg balance and microbiota in the gut and lung are still poorly understood. METHODS This study divided the rats into three groups (n = 8): control, model, and QBPF group. After establishing the model of COPD for four weeks and administering of QBPF for two weeks, Th17 cells, Treg cells, their associated cytokines, transcription factors, and intestinal and pulmonary microbiota of rats were analyzed. Furthermore, the correlations between intestinal and pulmonary microbiota and between bacterial genera and pulmonary function and immune function were measured. RESULTS The results revealed that QBPF could improve pulmonary function and contribute to the new balance of Th17/Treg in COPD rats. Meanwhile, QBPF treatment could regulate the composition of intestinal and pulmonary microbiota and improve community structure in COPD rats, suppressing the relative abundance of Coprococcus_2, Prevotella_9, and Blautia in the gut and Mycoplasma in the lung, but accumulating the relative abundance of Prevotellaceae_UCG_003 in the gut and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group in the lung. Additionally, gut-lung axis was confirmed by the significant correlations between the intestinal and pulmonary microbiota. Functional analysis of microbiota showed amino acid metabolism was altered in COPD rats in the gut and lung. Spearman correlation analysis further enriched the relationship between the microbiota in the gut and lung and pulmonary function and immune function in COPD model rats. CONCLUSIONS Our study indicated that the therapeutic effects of QBPF may be achieved by maintaining the immune cell balance and regulating the gut-lung axis microbiota, providing references to explore the potential biomarkers of COPD and the possible mechanism of QBPF to treat COPD.

Abstract
One of the most varied species of lactic acid bacteria is Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (Lb. plantarum), formerly known as Lactobacillus plantarum. It is one of the most common species of bacteria found in foods, probiotics, dairy products, and beverages. Studies related to genomic mapping and gene locations of Lb. plantarum have shown the novel findings of its new strains along with their non-pathogenic or non-antibiotic resistance genes. Safe strains obtained with new technologies are a pioneer in the development of new probiotics and starter cultures for the food industry. However, the safety of Lb. plantarum strains and their bacteriocins should also be confirmed with in vivo studies before being employed as food additives. Many of the Lb. plantarum strains and their bacteriocins are generally safe in terms of antibiotic resistance genes. Thus, they provide a great opportunity for improving the nutritional composition, shelf life, antioxidant activity, flavour properties and antimicrobial activities in the food industry. Moreover, since some Lb. plantarum strains have the ability to reduce undesirable compounds such as aflatoxins, they have potential use in maintaining food safety and preventing food spoilage. This review emphasizes the impacts of Lb. plantarum strains on fermented foods, along with novel approaches to their genomic mapping and safety aspects.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a kind of Gram-positive bacteria which can colonize in the biological gastrointestinal tract and play a variety of probiotic roles. LAB have a wide range of applications in industry, animal husbandry, planting, food safety, and medical science fields. Previous studies on LAB have typically concentrated on their effects on improving the digestion and absorption of the gastrointestinal tract, regulating the balance of the microflora, and inhibiting the production and accumulation of toxic substances. The resistance of LAB to cancer is a topic of growing interest and relevance. This paper provided a summary of bio-active substances of LAB when they act against cancer, as well as the safety of LAB in clinical cancer treatment. Moreover, this paper further discussed several possible directions for future research and the potential application of LAB as anti-cancer therapy.

Abstract
A limited number of studies have demonstrated the role of Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) in human colorectal cancers (CRCs). The association of L. lactis abundance with the density of natural killer (NK) cells has not been investigated before. In this study, the L. lactis abundance in 60 CRC specimens, 20 adenoma (AD) specimens, and 29 normal colorectal tissues (NCs) specimens was investigated using the fluorescence in situ hybridization of 16S ribosomal RNA. The density of NK cells was detected using immunofluorescence in 28 CRC specimens, 12 AD specimens, and 22 NC specimens. The presence of L. lactis in NCs (48.28%) was detected significantly higher than that in the AD (20.00%, P = .044) and CRC (23.33%, P = .018) specimens. The abundance of L. lactis in NCs (32.73 ± 7.24) was also found to be significantly higher than that in AD (8.91 ± 5.89, P = .029) and CRC (5.63 ± 1.67, P = .003) specimens. In addition, the density of NKp30+ NK cells in NCs (51.14 ± 4.84) was significantly higher than that in the AD (6.10 ± 1.31) and CRC (1.72 ± 0.40) specimens (P < .001). Moreover, a positive association of L. lactis abundance with NKp30+ NK cells density in the colorectal samples (P < .001) was observed. The low abundance of L. lactis in the CRC tissues was associated with the decreased NK cells, which suggested that this might contribute to the progression of CRC by decreasing the number of NK cells.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/01635581.2021.1944649.

Abstract
Artisanal kefir is a traditional fermented dairy product made using kefir grains. Kefir has documented natural antimicrobial activity and health benefits. A typical kefir microbial community includes lactic acid bacteria (LAB), acetic acid bacteria, and yeast among other species in a symbiotic matrix. In the presented work, the 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to reveal bacterial populations and elucidate the diversity and abundance of LAB species in international artisanal kefirs from Fusion Tea, Britain, the Caucuses region, Ireland, Lithuania, and South Korea. Bacterial species found in high abundance in most artisanal kefirs included Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens, Lentilactobacillus kefiri,Lactobacillus ultunensis, Lactobacillus apis, Lactobacillus gigeriorum, Gluconobacter morbifer, Acetobacter orleanensis, Acetobacter pasteurianus, Acidocella aluminiidurans, and Lactobacillus helveticus. Some of these bacterial species are LAB that have been reported for their bacteriocin production capabilities and/or health promoting properties.

Abstract
Some strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have anti-inflammatory effects, but the mechanism underlying the alleviation of inflammation by LAB is not fully understood. In this study, we examined the inhibitory effect of a certain strain of LAB, Lactobacillus paracasei, on inflammasome activation, which is associated with various inflammatory disorders. Using bone marrow-derived macrophages from BALB/c mice, we found that L. paracasei, but not L. rhamnosus, suppressed NLRP3 inflammasome activation and inhibited subsequent caspase-1 activation and IL-1β secretion. L. paracasei also had inhibitory effects on AIM2 and NLRC4 inflammasome activation as well as the NLRP3 inflammasome. These inhibitory effects of L. paracasei on inflammasome activation were dependent on autocrine IL-10 induced by L. paracasei-stimulated macrophages. Furthermore, IL-10 production by L. paracasei-stimulated macrophages was involved with phagocytosis and the NOD2 signaling pathway in macrophages. In addition to in vitro studies, oral administration of L. paracasei in C57BL/6 mice reduced monosodium urate crystal-induced peritoneal inflammation in vivo. Moreover, continuous intake of L. paracasei in C57BL/6 mice alleviated high fat diet-induced insulin resistance and aging-induced expression of biomarkers for T cell senescence. Taken together, we demonstrated that L. paracasei inhibits inflammasome activation in vitro and exhibits an anti-inflammatory function in vivo. These results indicate that LAB that have inhibitory effects on inflammasome activation might contribute to the alleviation of inflammation-related disorders.

Abstract
The developing symptoms of COVID-19, as well as the progression of illness and fatality, are a clearly a function of the overall health status of the individual. Complex, chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes are directly correlated with risk of disease severity and mortality. We explore lifestyle interventions that have specifically been demonstrated to strengthen host defense, reduce the probability and mitigate the severity of viral infection. Lifestyle interventions, from a Functional Medicine perspective, include nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress reduction, and connection. These factors, when in balance, provide a foundation for optimal health and immune function.

Abstract
Milk kefir is a traditional fermented milk product whose consumption is becoming increasingly popular. The natural starter for kefir production is kefir grain, which consists of various bacterial and yeast species. At the industrial scale, however, kefir grains are rarely used due to their slow growth, complex application, bad reproducibility and high costs. Instead, mixtures of defined lactic acid bacteria and sometimes yeasts are applied, which alter sensory and functional properties compared to natural grain-based milk kefir. In order to be able to mimic natural starter cultures for authentic kefir production, it is a prerequisite to gain deep knowledge about the nature of kefir grains, its microbial composition, morphologic structure, composition of strains on grains and the impact of environmental parameters on kefir grain characteristics. In addition, it is very important to deeply investigate the numerous multi-dimensional interactions among different species, which play important roles on the formation and the functionality of grains.

Abstract
Kefir is a dairy product that can be prepared from different milk types, such as goat, buffalo, sheep, camel, or cow via microbial fermentation (inoculating milk with kefir grains). As such, kefir contains various bacteria and yeasts which influence its chemical and sensory characteristics. A mixture of two kinds of milk promotes kefir sensory and rheological properties aside from improving its nutritional value. Additives such as inulin can also enrich kefir's health qualities and organoleptic characters. Several metabolic products are generated during kefir production and account for its distinct flavour and aroma: Lactic acid, ethanol, carbon dioxide, and aroma compounds such as acetoin and acetaldehyde. During the storage process, microbiological, physicochemical, and sensory characteristics of kefir can further undergo changes, some of which improve its shelf life. Kefir exhibits many health benefits owing to its antimicrobial, anticancer, gastrointestinal tract effects, gut microbiota modulation and anti-diabetic effects. The current review presents the state of the art relating to the role of probiotics, prebiotics, additives, and different manufacturing practices in the context of kefir's physicochemical, sensory, and chemical properties. A review of kefir's many nutritional and health benefits, underlying chemistry and limitations for usage is presented.

Abstract
Lactobacilli are among the most common microorganisms found in kefir; a traditional fermented milk beverage produced locally in many locations around the world. Kefir has been associated with a wide range of purported health benefits; such as antimicrobial activity; cholesterol metabolism; immunomodulation; anti-oxidative effects; anti-diabetic effects; anti-allergenic effects; and tumor suppression. This review critically examines and assesses these claimed benefits and mechanisms with regard to particular Lactobacillus species and/or strains that have been derived from kefir; as well as detailing further potential avenues for experimentation.

Abstract
Over the last decade, there has been an increasing scientific and public interest in bacteria that may positively contribute to human gut health and well-being. This interest is reflected by the ever-increasing number of developed functional food products containing health-promoting bacteria and reaching the market place as well as by the growing revenue and profits of notably bacterial supplements worldwide. Traditionally, the origin of probiotic-marketed bacteria was limited to a rather small number of bacterial species that mostly belong to lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. Intensifying research efforts on the human gut microbiome offered novel insights into the role of human gut microbiota in health and disease, while also providing a deep and increasingly comprehensive understanding of the bacterial communities present in this complex ecosystem and their interactions with the gut-liver-brain axis. This resulted in rational and systematic approaches to select novel health-promoting bacteria or to engineer existing bacteria with enhanced probiotic properties. In parallel, the field of gut microbiomics developed into a fertile framework for the identification, isolation and characterization of a phylogenetically diverse array of health-promoting bacterial species, also called next-generation therapeutic bacteria. The present review will address these developments with specific attention for the selection and improvement of a selected number of health-promoting bacterial species and strains that are extensively studied or hold promise for future food or pharma product development.

Abstract
Silkworms have been reported to promote the growth and production of the stromata of C. militaris (L.) Link as a parasite insect medium and may improve its metabolites. The effects of Tussah silkmoth pupae (TG group) and rice (RG group) on the metabolic profile of C. militaris (L.) Link were compared by metabolomics. Meanwhile, the profile of natural C. sinensis (NG group) was also analyzed. The functions of these metabolites from different groups and cordycepin were tested using breast cancer cells and an animal model. 292 metabolites were detected, including 51, 31 and 23 unique metabolites from the TG, RG and NG groups, respectively. The level of 3-deoxyadenosine (cordycepin with anti-tumor activity) was highest in the TG group. Tussah silkmoth pupae induced the biosynthesis of cordycepin and unsaturated fatty acids, which may be beneficial in the prevention of breast cancer. The TG group and cordycepin had significant inhibitory activities on breast cancer cells and in animal models when compared with the two other groups. Tussah silkmoth pupae improved the metabolic profile of C. militaris (L.) Link, which has more pharmaceutical metabolites than C. sinensis. Tussah silkmoth pupae improved the metabolic profile of Cordyceps militaris (L.) Link by upregulating 3-deoxyadenosine (with anti-tumor activity) and insulin secretion.![]()

Abstract
The illness ME/CFS has been repeatedly tied to infectious agents such as Epstein Barr Virus. Expanding research on the human microbiome now allows ME/CFS-associated pathogens to be studied as interacting members of human microbiome communities. Humans harbor these vast ecosystems of bacteria, viruses and fungi in nearly all tissue and blood. Most well-studied inflammatory conditions are tied to dysbiosis or imbalance of the human microbiome. While gut microbiome dysbiosis has been identified in ME/CFS, microbes and viruses outside the gut can also contribute to the illness. Pathobionts, and their associated proteins/metabolites, often control human metabolism and gene expression in a manner that pushes the body toward a state of illness. Intracellular pathogens, including many associated with ME/CFS, drive microbiome dysbiosis by directly interfering with human transcription, translation, and DNA repair processes. Molecular mimicry between host and pathogen proteins/metabolites further complicates this interference. Other human pathogens disable mitochondria or dysregulate host nervous system signaling. Antibodies and/or clonal T cells identified in patients with ME/CFS are likely activated in response to these persistent microbiome pathogens. Different human pathogens have evolved similar survival mechanisms to disable the host immune response and host metabolic pathways. The metabolic dysfunction driven by these organisms can result in similar clusters of inflammatory symptoms. ME/CFS may be driven by this pathogen-induced dysfunction, with the nature of dysbiosis and symptom presentation varying based on a patient's unique infectious and environmental history. Under such conditions, patients would benefit from treatments that support the human immune system in an effort to reverse the infectious disease process.
