Abstract
PURPOSE The visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP) are useful for assessing visceral obesity. However, these indices were developed for Caucasians, and it is necessary to confirm whether the VAI and LAP are appropriate indicators for identifying obesity phenotypes in Asians. This study investigated whether the VAI and LAP are effective indicators for diagnosing four obesity phenotypes in South Korean adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 23,310 adult participants (age ≥20 years) who had undergone a health checkup at a general hospital in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea from January 2017 to December 2020. VAI and LAP were calculated based on the presented mathematical model according to sex. According to the metabolic health status and presence or absence of obesity, the obesity phenotypes were classified into 4 groups: metabolically healthy non-obese (N=14,240, 61.1%), metabolically unhealthy non-obese (N=477, 2.0%), metabolically healthy obese (MHO; N=6796, 29.2%), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO; N=1797, 7.7%). RESULTS The receiver operating characteristics curve analysis showed VAI best predicted MUO among the four obesity phenotypes, whereas the LAP showed excellent discriminating ability for the MUO group (area under the curve 0.877, 0.849, and 0.921 and 0.923, 0.907, and 0.954 for all participants, men, and women, respectively). The optimal VAI cutoff values for identifying the MUO group were 1.83 in men and 1.58 in women, and the optimal cutoff values for the LAP were 41.45 in men and 23.83 in women, with a higher value for men. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the VAI and LAP were associated with an increased risk in the MHO and MUO groups among the obesity phenotypes in both sexes. CONCLUSION In South Korean adults, the VAI and LAP are closely related to the MUO phenotype in both sexes and are effective indices for predicting the MUO phenotype.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of various clinical and biochemical abnormalities, needs early diagnosis and treatment to reduce morbidity and mortality. The present study is designed to compare Atherogenic Index of Plasma, Lipid Accumulation Product and Visceral Adiposity Index with metabolic syndrome components in patients with metabolic syndrome. The study comprises of 150 metabolic syndrome patients and 150 age and sex matched healthy controls of both genders in the age group of 20 - 65 years. Atherogenic Index of Plasma, lipid accumulation and Visceral Adiposity Index product index were calculated for all participants. Pearson Correlation was used to compareatherogenic Index of plasma, lipid accumulation and Visceral Adiposity Index product between cases and controls. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to compare the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of Atherogenic Index of Plasma, lipid accumulation and Visceral Adiposity Index product with metabolic syndrome. The comparisons between the BMI, WC, Atherogenic Index of Plasma ,lipid accumulation and Visceral Adiposity Index product were significantly higher in metabolic syndrome cases (p<0.001).Although the entire index were independently associated with Mets, AIP showed the highest area under the curve (0.954, 95% CI 0.929 0.978,p value p<0.0001) in identifying metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of elements linked with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The early detection of individuals at the risk of developing metabolic syndrome can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and CVD. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the association of the lipid accumulation product (LAP) and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index with metabolic syndrome among young adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 300 young adults within the age range of 20 - 40 years. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. The LAP and TyG index were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were performed to assess the association of the LAP and TyG index with metabolic syndrome. RESULTS The LAP and TyG index were significantly associated with metabolic syndrome (P < 0.05). The LAP showed the highest area under the curve (0.882 and 0.905 in male and female subjects, respectively), followed by the TyG index (0.875 and 0.886 in male and female subjects, respectively, at P < 0.0001. The cut-off values for the LAP were 45.65 in males with a sensitivity and specificity of 80% and 46.91 in females with a sensitivity and specificity of 88%. The cut-off points for the TyG index were 8.63 in males with 80% sensitivity and 78.9% specificity and 8.54 in females with 83.3% sensitivity and 79.6% specificity. CONCLUSIONS The LAP and TyG index are significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in young adults. As simple and inexpensive markers, they can be used to identify individuals with metabolic syndrome with high sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that lipid accumulation product (LAP) was associated with the risk of cardiometabolic disease. It is not clear whether LAP could be used as a marker to identify metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Chinese ethnic groups. AIM To assess the reliability of LAP as a maker to identify MetS among Dong adults. DESIGN Population-based cross-sectional study. METHOD We included 6494 Dong individuals (1403 patients) aged 30-79 years from southwest China. MetS was established by Chinese Diabetes Society. Logistic regression model was utilized to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was utilized to calculate area under the ROC curve (AUC) and 95% CIs to obtain the identification ability for MetS. RESULTS The risk of MetS was increased with per 5 units increase of LAP (OR 1.37 [95% CI, 1.34-1.39]). Similar results were found in subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses. Clustered metabolic risk associated with per 5 units increase of LAP was observed for people with 1 (OR 1.59 [95% CI, 1.53-1.65]), 2 (2.15 [2.06-2.24]), 3 (2.59 [2.48-2.71]), 4 (2.81 [2.69-2.95]) and 5 (3.03 [2.87-3.21]) MetS components. LAP presented higher AUC (0.915 [95% CI, 0.907-0.923]) than other included obesity indices (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION These data support evidence that LAP was related to the risk of MetS, had a high AUC and could be a reliable index for identifying MetS patients among Dong adults in Chinese.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The results of previous animal experiments and clinical studies have shown that there is a correlation between expression of betatrophin and blood lipid levels. However, there are still differences studies on the correlation and interaction mechanism between betatrophin, angiogenin-likeprotein3 (ANGPTL3) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL). In our previous studies, we found an increase in serum ANGPTL3 Levels in Chinese patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Therefore, we retrospectively studied Kazakh CHD patients.
AIM To explore the correlation between the betatrophin/ANGPTL3/LPL pathway and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with CHD.
METHODS Nondiabetic patients diagnosed with CHD were selected as the case group; 79 were of Kazakh descent and 72 were of Han descent. The control groups comprised of 61 Kazakh and 65 Han individuals. The serum levels of betatrophin and LPL were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the double antibody sandwich ELISA was used to detect serum level of ANGPTL3. The levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose in each group were determined by an automatic biochemical analyzer. At the same time, the clinical baseline data of patients in each group were included.
RESULTS Betatrophin, ANGPTL3 and LPL levels of Kazakh patients were significantly higher than those of Han patients (P = 0.031, 0.038, 0.021 respectively). There was a positive correlation between the Gensini score and total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low- density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), betatrophin, and LPL in Kazakh patients (r = 0.204, 0.453, 0.352, 0.471, and 0.382 respectively), (P = 0.043, 0.009, 0.048, 0.001, and P < 0.001 respectively). A positive correlation was found between the Gensini score and body mass index (BMI), TC, TG, LDL-C, LPL, betatrophin in Han patients (r = 0.438, 0.195, 0.296, 0.357, 0.328, and 0.446 respectively), (P = 0.044, 0.026, 0.003, 0.20, 0.004, and P < 0.001). TG and betatrophin were the risk factors of coronary artery disease in Kazakh patients, while BMI and betatrophin were the risk factors in Han patients.
CONCLUSION There was a correlation between the betatrophin/ANGPTL3/LPL pathway and severity of CAD in patients with CHD.

Abstract
PURPOSE The predictive capacity between children's lipid accumulation product (CLAP) combining visceral adiposity index (VAI), CLAP, and VAI with metabolically unhealthy phenotype remained unclear. This study aimed to compare the ability of CLAP combining VAI, CLAP, VAI and traditional adiposity indicators (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)) to predict metabolically unhealthy phenotype among Chinese children and adolescents. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the cross-sectional study, 1714 children and adolescents aged 12 to 18 were selected by random cluster sampling, underwent a questionnaire survey, physical examination, biochemical tests and body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Participants were divided into four phenotypes according to BMI and metabolic syndrome components. The logarithmic CLAP (LnCLAP), VAI, BMI, WC, WHtR and WHR were standardized for sex and age using the z-score method (standardized variables: LnCLAP-z, VAI-z, BMI-z, WC-z, WHtR-z and WHR-z). RESULTS LnCLAP-z ≥ 1, VAI-z ≥ 1, WC-z ≥ 1, and WHR-z ≥ 1 increased the risk of metabolically unhealthy normal-weight phenotype (the OR and 95% CI were 4.18 (1.75-10.02), 24.05 (12.79-45.21), 6.17 (1.14-33.51), 2.69 (1.07-6.72), respectively), LnCLAP-z ≥ 1, VAI-z ≥ 1 and WC-z ≥ 1 increased the risk of metabolically unhealthy overweight or obese phenotype (the OR and 95% CI were 2.67 (1.40-5.09), 10.30 (3.03-35.03), 2.19 (1.18-4.09), respectively). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for CLAP combining VAI in the prediction of the metabolically unhealthy phenotype were 0.837 (0.776-0.899) and 0.876 (0.834-0.918) for boys and girls with normal-weight, 0.853 (0.803-0.903) and 0.794 (0.711-0.878) for boys and girls with overweight and obese (all P < 0.001), which were higher than CLAP, VAI, BMI, WC, WHtR and WHR. CONCLUSION Among Chinese children and adolescents, CLAP combining VAI was a more effective indicator than CLAP, VAI and traditional adiposity indicators in predicting unhealthy metabolic phenotype.

Abstract
Obesity is an important risk factor for the development of diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. However, few reports have investigated the relationships between these obesity-related indices and diabetic nephropathy. The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between obesity-related markers with albuminuria and advanced kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Obesity-related indices including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (CI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), body adiposity index (BAI), abdominal volume index (AVI), body shape index (BSI), and triglyceride glucose (TyG) index were measured. Albuminuria was defined as a urine albumin/creatinine ratio of ≥30 mg/g. Advanced kidney disease was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <30 ml/min/1.73 m2. A total of 1872 patients with type 2 DM (mean age 64.0 ± 11.3 years, 809 males and 1063 females) were enrolled. In multivariable analysis, 11 high obesity-related indices (BMI, WHR, WHtR, LAP, BRI, CI, VAI, BAI, AVI, ABSI, and TyG index) were significantly associated with albuminuria. In addition, high BMI, WHR, WHtR, LAP, BRI, CI, VAI, and AVI were significantly associated with eGFR <30 ml/min/1.73 m2. The results of this study showed that various obesity-related indices were significantly associated with albuminuria and advanced kidney disease in patients with type 2 DM. Screening may be considered in public health programs to recognize and take appropriate steps to prevent subsequent complications.

Abstract
Background. The prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing, worldwide. Using a simple, efficient and reliable tool for predicting MetS is an essential approach in preventive health programs. The aim of this study was to compare the different anthropometric indices in predicting metabolic syndrome in older adults.Methods. This cross-sectional study is a part of the Amirkola Health and Ageing cohort Project (2011-2016). Of total, 1,488 older people aged 60-92 years were entered to the study. Medical and personal information of participants were collected by a questionnaire. After measuring the height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and neck circumference, body mass index, waist to hip ratio, waist to height ratio, abdominal volume index and conicity index were calculated. Independent t-test, chi-square and ROC curve were used to analyze the data.Results. Based on ATPIII-2005 diagnostic criteria, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 71.57%.The prevalence in female was higher than male. All of examined anthropometric indices, except neck circumference (p = 0.10), showed a significant difference in people with MetS compared to the individuals without metabolic syndrome (p<0.001). Waist to height ratio showed the largest area under the curve for predicting MetS (0.786; 95% CI: 0.76-0.81) followed by BMI (0.746; 95% CI: 0.71-0.77), AVI (0.745; 95% CI: 0.71-0.77), and waist circumference (0.743; 95% CI: 0.71-0.77).Conclusion. Waist to height ratio was the best predictor of MetS in older adults.

Abstract
Objectives There is limited published literature on the genetic risks of chronic inflammatory related disease (eg, obesity and cardiovascular disease) among the Central Asia population. The aim is to determine potential genetic loci as risk factors for obesity for the Kazakhstani population. Setting Kazakhstan. Participants One hundred and sixty-three Kazakhstani nationals (ethnic groups: both Russians and Kazakhs) were recruited for the cross-sectional study. Linear regression models, adjusted for confounding factors, were used to examine the genetic associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 19 genetic loci with obesity (73 obese/overweight individuals and 90 controls). Results Overall, logistic regression analyses revealed genotypes C/T in CRP (rs1205), A/C in AGTR1 (rs5186), A/G in CBS (rs234706), G/G in FUT2 (rs602662), A/G in PAI-1 (rs1799889), G/T (rs1801131) and A/G (rs1801133) in MTHFR genes significantly decrease risk of overweight/obesity. After stratification for ethnicity, rs234706 was significantly associated with overweight/obesity in both Russians and Kazakhs, while rs1800871 was significant in Kazakhs only. Conclusions This study revealed that variations in SNPs known to be associated with cardiovascular health can also contribute to the risks of developing obesity in the population of Kazakhstan.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and two latest optimised indices, waist divided by height 0.5 (WHT.5R) and body mass index (BMI) multiply by the square root of BMI and waist circumference (BMI√WC), and to comprehensively compare the ability of 10 anthropometric indices to identify MetS, including BMI√WC, WHT.5R, abdominal volume index (AVI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), Body Roundness Index (BRI). DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Ningxia, China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 3860 adults aged 18-88 years from Ningxia, China were recruited by a single stratified cluster random sampling method. METHODS ORs and 95% CIs for associations between indices and MetS were calculated using binary logistic regression, and areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUCs) were performed to compare their predictive capacity for MetS. All results for men and women were analysed and presented separately. RESULTS The highest adjusted ORs for MetS were observed for the following indices: AVI (OR 15.22, 95% CI 10.88 to 21.30), WHT.5R (OR 13.83, 95% CI 9.89 to 19.35) and BMI√WC (OR 12.14, 95% CI 8.79 to 16.76) in men, whereas BRI, WHtR (both OR 14.91, 95% CI 10.39 to 21.4), WHT.5R (OR 14.22, 95% CI 9.96 to 20.29) and AVI (OR 14.03, 95% CI 9.91 to 19.87) in women. In ROC analysis, AVI (AUC: 0.767 for men and 0.749 for women) and WHT.5R (AUC: 0.761 for men and 0.747 for women) showed the highest predictive ability for MetS. CONCLUSIONS BMI√WC and WHT.5R were significantly positively associated with MetS, and AVI and WHT.5R could be useful screening tools for identifying MetS in both sexes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria, previous studies in Chinese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) reported a low prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS); however, the same population predisposed to developing pre-MS. Early identification and treatment of individuals with MS and pre-MS are imperative to prevent their adverse consequences. Moreover, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was not accurate in detecting pathoglycemia in women with PCOS as they have shown characteristically postprandial abnormalities in the carbohydrate metabolism. Therefore, we aimed to compare the discriminative performance of various indices for identifying MS and pre-MS/MS (pre-MS and MS) using the updated Chinese Diabetes Society (uCDS) criteria in Chinese women with PCOS. METHODS 1083 Chinese women with PCOS were included in this study. We measured and evaluated 8 indices in all individuals. Based on the uCDS criteria for MS, patients who had no less than two components of MS but did not meet the criteria for the diagnosis of MS were considered as having pre-MS. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under ROC curves (AUCs) levels were used to assess the accuracy of each index in detecting MS and pre-MS/MS. RESULTS Among the 8 indices assessed, the lipid accumulation product (LAP) provided the highest AUCs for detecting MS and pre-MS/MS, followed by CVAI, WTI, VAI, TyG, TG/HDL, WC, and BMI. The optimal cutoff points determined for LAP were 45.13 (sensitivity 88.0%, specificity 88.4%, and Youden index 0.764) for MS and 28.01 (sensitivity 87.5%, specificity 80.7%, and Youden index 0.681) for pre-MS/MS, respectively. CONCLUSIONS uCDS criteria are reasonably more suitable for detecting MS and pre-MS in Chinese women with PCOS. Based on this criterion, LAP is the best index for the diagnosis of MS and pre-MS/MS in Chinese women with PCOS, out of the 8 obesity and lipid-related indices assessed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some studies have shown that a high level of bilirubin is a protective factor against metabolic syndrome (MS), while a high level of transaminase is a risk factor for MS. However, the existing results are inconsistent and few cohort studies have been published. METHODS Using an ambispective cohort study, 565 Kazakhs from Xinjiang, China were selected as the study subjects. The baseline serum bilirubin and transaminase levels of the subjects were divided into quartiles and the relationship between these values and the incidence of MS was analyzed. The definition of MS was based on the Joint Interim Statement (JIS) diagnostic criteria. RESULTS The average follow-up time for the subjects was 5.72 years. The cumulative incidence of MS was 36.11% (204 of the 565 subjects), and the incidence density was 63.10/1000 person-years. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the levels of total bilirubin (TBIL) and indirect bilirubin (IBIL) were negatively correlated with the occurrence of MS, Compared to the lowest quartile level (Q1), the hazard ratios of MS the TBIL levels at the Q2-Q4 quartiles were: 0.47 (0.31-0.71), 0.53 (0.35-0.79), and 0.48 (0.32-0.72), respectively, while IBIL levels at the Q2-Q4 quartiles showed an MS hazard ratio of 0.48 (0.32-0.72), 0.54(0.36-0.81), and 0.52 (0.35-0.77), respectively, all at a 95% confidence level. However, no relationship was found between transaminase levels and the incidence of MS. CONCLUSION Serum TBIL and IBIL levels were negatively correlated with the incidence of MS in a Kazakh population in China.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Worldwide, metabolic syndrome is a common problem among T2DM patients. Even though the International Diabetes Federation recommended waist circumference as a diagnostic tool for metabolic syndrome, the appropriate indices and cut-off point remain controversial. OBJECTIVE To assess obesity indices in identifying metabolic syndrome among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Dessie Referral Hospital, North east Ethiopia. METHODS A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 363 consecutively selected T2DM in Dessie Referral Hospital from February to March 2017. Data were collected by interviewer-administered questionnaire. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, lipid profile, blood glucose levels and blood pressure were taken. Descriptive statistics were computed. Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis with a 95% confidence interval and p-value <0.05 was used to identify the discriminate ability of each index, while the optimal cut point of each index was determined by Youden's index. RESULTS A total of 330 study participants were included in the study. Based on ATP III definition, the magnitude of metabolic syndrome among T2DM patients was 59.4% (53.6-64.5%). Waist to height ratio (optimal cut point=0.54, AUC=0.85) and waist circumference (optimal cut point= 83 cm, AUC=0.75) were the best predictor of metabolic syndrome for women and men, respectively. For the entire study participant, waist to height ratio (optimal cut point=0.51, AUC=0.79) was the best predictor of metabolic syndrome among type 2 diabetes patients. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Waist to height ratio and waist circumference was the best predictor of metabolic syndrome for women and men, respectively. So, appropriate indices optimal cut-off point should be included to diagnose metabolic syndrome among T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine the optimal cut-off values and evaluate the associations of product of triacylglycerol and glucose (TyG), lipid accumulation product (LAPI), visceral adiposity index (VAI) with chronic kidney diseases (CKD) stratified by sex. METHODS From January to April 2018, our team had conducted a large-scale cross-sectional survey that contained 2720 individuals on the southern coast of China. Logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to evaluate the optimal cut-off and value of TyG, LAPI, VAI for predicting CKD. RESULTS A multivariate logistic regression analysis found that the TyG had the better value of prediction for the presence of CKD for the highest quartile vs the lowest quartile in both males (OR: 3.65; 95% CI, 2.04-6.52; p<0.001) and females (OR: 3.50; 95% CI, 2.20-5.56; p<0.001), followed by LAPI and VAI, when further adjusted for cofounder factors, LAPI and VAI both lost their independence, and only TyG remains its significant association with CKD in both males (OR: 2.81; 95% CI, 1.25-6.30; p<0.001) and females (OR: 3.22; 95% CI, 1.56-6.61; p<0.001). ROC curve showed that TyG had the highest AUC for predicting CKD in males (AUC: 0.618). TyG (AUC: 0.670) and LAPI (AUC: 0.670) both had the highest AUC in females. United predicted models which contain TyG were conducted for predicting CKD in males (AUC: 758) and females (AUC: 0.773) and results indicated that multivariate analysis of TyG and other traditional factors can impressively improve the accuracy of predictive probability for CKD. CONCLUSION TyG is a priority to the other two novel indices and may become valuable makers and have strong predictive power for predicting CKD, especially in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The body adiposity index (BAI) was recently proposed as a better indicator of body adiposity than body mass index in adults. The association between BAI and cardiometabolic risk factors has been widely investigated. However, the strength and magnitude of these associations varied as a function of the endpoint evaluated, the study design, the population investigated, and the cut-off points used. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between BAI and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk in a large sample of Brazilian adults and to propose the most appropriate cut-off points for BAI for the identification of CHD risk in the adult Brazilian population. METHODS Data from 15,092 civil servants (54.4% women) from universities and research institutes in six Brazilian states were evaluated in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). All were aged 35-74 years at baseline. The Framingham coronary risk score was used to identify a very high risk of CHD (≥20% risk of CHD over the next 10 years) and a high risk of CHD (≥10% risk). BAI cut-off points capable of detecting a risk of CHD were determined using ROC curves and associations were tested using Poisson regression with robust variance, according to sex and age. Three multivariable models were examined. RESULTS BAI remained positively associated with a very high and high risk of CHD following adjustment for potential confounding factors in all the strata and multivariable models (p < 0.05), with the exception of model 3 (adjusted for education level and waist-to-hip ratio) for very a high risk of CHD in younger women (p = 0.06). In the adjusted models, the prevalence ratios for a very high and high risk of CHD, irrespective of age group, varied between 1.23 (95%CI: 1.09-1.39) and 1.64 (1.33-2.03) and 1.07 (1.03-1.12) and 1.47 (1.36-1.60) in men; and 1.57 (1.08-2.31) and 2.42 (1.36-4.31) and 1.29 (1.13-1.47) and 1.82 (1.54-2.15) in women, respectively. The optimal cut-off points of BAI to determine a risk of CHD were: 28.0 in men of both age groups, and 34.0 in younger women and 36.0 in older women to determine a very high risk; and 26.0 in younger men and 34.0 in women of both age groups to determine a high risk. BAI showed a reasonable ability to predict coronary risk in participants of the ELSA-Brasil (AUC>60%, except for the group of men of 60-74 years of age). CONCLUSIONS Higher BAI levels were found to be associated with a greater risk of developing CHD in both men and women of different ages participating in the ELSA-Brasil, suggesting that BAI may be a useful tool for screening for CHD risk in Brazilian adults.

Abstract
Background Functional disability is a common health burden in older adults and follows a hierarchical pattern. Physical performance measures are useful for the objective estimation of functional disability. This study primarily aimed to compare the validity of handgrip strength and gait speed, alone and in combination, for recognizing the functional disability among Chinese older adults. This study also aimed to stratify the functional disability according to the criterion-referenced values of handgrip strength and gait speed. Methods We selected 6127 respondents from the 2011 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Here, we defined functional disability as needing any help in any items of activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). To assess the validity of physical performance measures alone and in combination for the recognition of functional disability, we conducted the receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results Compared with handgrip strength, the gait speed could better discriminate ADL disability and showed a satisfactory discriminant validity (area under the curve ≥ 0.7) in men. However, this finding was not found in the recognition of IADL disability. When combining these two measures, the parallel test showed a high sensitivity with a poor specificity, whereas the serial test showed a perfect specificity with a poor sensitivity. Conclusion We developed the hierarchical cut-off values of handgrip strength and gait speed for identifying and stratifying the functional disability among Chinese adults over 60 years old. The speed test was superior to handgrip strength in identifying ADL disability. The parallel tests of those with high sensitivity perhaps could help identify the functional disability. Further work on cost-utility analysis is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study evaluated the predictive ability of five known "best" obesity and lipid-related parameters, including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), triglyceride-to-high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and visceral adiposity index (VAI), in identifying metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Chinese elderly population. METHODS A total of 6722 elderly Chinese subjects (≥60 years) were recruited into our community-based cross-sectional study from April 2015 to July 2017. The anthropometrics, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, blood lipid profiles, family history and health-related behaviours were assessed. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS was 40.4% (32.5% in males and 47.2% in females). With the increase in the number of MetS components (from 0 to 5), all the five parameters showed an increase trend in both genders (all P for trend < 0.001). According to receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses, all the five parameters performed high predictive value in identifying MetS. The statistical significance of the areas under the curves (AUCs) differences suggested that the AUCs of LAP were the greatest among others in both genders (AUCs were 0.897 in males and 0.875 in females). The optimal cut-off values of LAP were 26.35 in males and 31.04 in females. After adjustment for potentially confounding factors, LAP was strongly associated with the odds of having MetS in both genders, and ORs for MetS increased across quartiles using multivariate logistic regression analysis (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION LAP appeared to be a superior parameter for predicting MetS in both Chinese elderly males and females, better than VAI, TG/HDL-C, WHtR and BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To compare the accuracy of different obesity indexes, including waist circumference (WC), weight-to-height ratio (WHtR), body mass index (BMI), and lipid accumulation product (LAP), in predicting metabolic syndrome (MetS) and to estimate the optimal cutoffs of these indexes in a rural Chinese adult population. METHODS This prospective cohort involved 8468 participants who were followed up for 6 years. MetS was defined by the International Diabetes Federation, American Heart Association, and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute criteria. The power of the 4 indexes for predicting MetS was estimated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and optimal cutoffs were determined by the maximum of Youden's index. RESULTS As compared with WHtR, BMI, and LAP, WC had the largest area under the ROC curve (AUC) for predicting MetS after adjusting for age, smoking, drinking, physical activity, and education level. The AUCs (95% CIs) for WC, WHtR, BMI, and LAP for men and women were 0.862 (0.851-0.873) and 0.806 (0.794-0.817), 0.832 (0.820-0.843) and 0.789 (0.777-0.801), 0.824 (0.812-0.835) and 0.790 (0.778-0.802), and 0.798 (0.785-0.810) and 0.771 (0.759-0.784), respectively. The optimal cutoffs of WC for men and women were 83.30 and 76.80 cm. Those of WHtR, BMI, and LAP were approximately 0.51 and 0.50, 23.90 and 23.00 kg/m2, and 19.23 and 20.48 cm.mmol/L, respectively. CONCLUSIONS WC as a preferred index over WHtR, BMI, and LAP for predicting MetS in rural Chinese adults of both genders; the optimal cutoffs for men and women were 83.30 and 76.80 cm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between CETP gene polymorphisms and metabolic syndrome (MS), as well as the relationship between the CETP gene polymorphisms and each component of MS. METHODS A total of 571 individuals which were randomly selected from 5692 Uyghur adults were subdivided into two groups, including 280 patients with MS and 291 control subjects, using the group-matching method after matching for gender. We detected CETP polymorphisms (rs5882, rs1800775, rs3764261, rs12149545, rs711752, and rs708272) by using the Snapshot method. RESULTS (1) Significant differences were found involving the frequency distribution of genotypes and alleles of rs1800775, rs3764261, rs12149545, rs711752, and rs708272 between the control and MS groups (all p < 0.05). (2) rs1800775, rs3764261, rs12149545, rs711752, and rs708272 polymorphisms were significantly related to the risk of MS (all p < 0.05). (3) The rs1800775 polymorphism was associated with high fasting blood glucose levels and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C); rs3764261 and rs12149545 polymorphisms were associated with all components of MS except high blood pressure; rs711752 and rs708272 polymorphisms were associated with low HDL-C (all p < 0.05). (4) Complete linkage disequilibrium (LD) was identified for two pairs of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs3764261 and rs12149545 (D' = 1.000, r² = 0.931), rs711752 and rs708272 (D' = 1.000, r² = 0.996)). (5) The A-G-G-G-C (p = 0.013, odds ratio [OR] = 0.622, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.427-0.906) and A-T-A-A-T (p < 0.001, OR = 0.519, 95% CI = 0.386-0.697) haplotypes were more frequent in the control group than in the case group. Conclusions: The rs1800775, rs3764261, rs12149545, rs711752, and rs708272 polymorphisms of CETP were associated with MS and its components among the Uyghur ethnic group. Complete LD was found between two pairs of SNPs (rs3764261 and rs12149545, rs711752, and rs708272). The A-G-G-G-C and A-T-A-A-T haplotypes might be protective factors for MS.

Visceral Adiposity Index and Lipid Accumulation Product Index: Two Alternate Body Indices to Identify Chronic Kidney Disease among the Rural Population in Northeast China. Abstract
We aimed to compare the relative strength of the association between anthropometric obesity indices and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Another objective was to examine whether the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product index (LAPI) can identify CKD in the rural population of China. There were 5168 males and 6024 females involved in this cross-sectional study, and 237 participants (2.12%) suffered from CKD. Obesity indices included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), VAI and LAPI. VAI and LAPI were calculated with triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), BMI and WC. VAI = [WC/39.68 + (1.88 × BMI)] × (TG /1.03) × (1.31/ HDL) for males; VAI = [WC/36.58 + (1.89 × BMI)] × (TG/0.81) × (1.52/HDL) for females. LAPI = (WC-65) × TG for males, LAPI = (WC-58) × TG for females. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2. The prevalence of CKD increased across quartiles for WHtR, VAI and LAPI. A multivariate logistic regression analysis of the presence of CKD for the highest quartile vs. the lowest quartile of each anthropometric measure showed that the VAI was the best predictor of CKD in females (OR: 4.21, 95% CI: 2.09–8.47, p < 0.001). VAI showed the highest AUC for CKD (AUC: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.65–0.72) and LAPI came second (AUC: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.61–0.70) in females compared with BMI (both p-values < 0.001). However, compared with the traditional index of the BMI, the anthropometric measures VAI, LAPI, WC, and WHtR had no statistically significant capacity to predict CKD in males. Our results showed that both VAI and LAPI were significantly associated with CKD in the rural population of northeast China. Furthermore, VAI and LAPI were superior to BMI, WC and WHtR for predicting CKD only in females.

Abstract
Most previous studies on metabolic syndrome (MetS) examined urban and high income settings. We thus investigated the prevalence of MetS among a multi-ethnic population living in a low income rural area and explored the use of visceral adiposity and anthropometric indicators to identify men and women with MetS. We recruited 10,029 individuals of nomadic Kazakhs, rural Uyghur and Han residents in Xinjiang, China. MetS was defined by the Joint Interim Statement criteria. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to compare the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of each index. The age-adjusted prevalence of MetS was 21.8%. The visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), body adiposity index (BAI) and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were significantly associated with MetS, independent of ethnic, age, and other covariates. The AUC of VAI, LAP and WHtR were all greater than 0.7, and the LAP was the index that most accurately identified MetS status in men (AUC = 0.853) and women (AUC = 0.817), with the optimal cut-offs of 34.7 and 27.3, respectively. In conclusion, the prevalence of MetS in low income rural adults of Xinjiang was high and the LAP was an effective indicator for the screening of MetS.
