Health risk assessment from inhalation exposure to indoor formaldehyde: A systematic review and meta-analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated studies on formaldehyde (FA) inhalation exposure in indoor environments and related carcinogenic (CR) and non-carcinogenic (HQ) risk. Studies were obtained from Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, and Embase databases without time limitation until November 21, 2023. Studies not meeting the criteria of Population, Exposure, Comparator, and Outcomes (PECO) were excluded. The 45 articles included belonged to the 5 types of sites: dwelling environments, educational centers, kindergartens, vehicle cabins, and other indoor environments. A meta-analysis determined the average effect size (ES) between indoor FA concentrations, CR, and HQ values in each type of indoor environment. FA concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 1620 μg/m3. The highest FA concentrations were stated in water pipe cafés and the lowest in residential environments. In more than 90% of the studies uncertain (1.00 ×10-6 1.00 ×10-4) due to FA inhalation exposure was reported and non-carcinogenic risk was stated acceptable. The meta-analysis revealed the highest CR values due to inhalation of indoor FA in high-income countries. As 90% of the time is spent indoors, it is crucial to adopt effective strategies to reduce FA concentrations, especially in kindergartens and schools, with regular monitoring of indoor air quality.

Indoor PM from residential coal combustion: Levels, chemical composition, and toxicity

Indoor air quality is crucial for human health due to the significant time people spend at home, and it is mainly affected by internal sources such as solid fuel combustion for heating. This study investigated the indoor air quality and health implications associated with residential coal burning covering gaseous pollutants (CO, CO2 and total volatile organic compounds), particulate matter, and toxicity. The PM10 chemical composition was obtained by ICP-MS/OES (elements), ion chromatography (water-soluble ions) and thermal-optical analysis (organic and elemental carbon). During coal combustion, PM10 levels were higher (up to 8.8 times) than background levels and the indoor-to-outdoor ratios were, on average, greater than unity, confirming the existence of a significant indoor source. The chemical characterisation of PM10 revealed increased concentrations of organic carbon and elemental carbon during coal combustion as well as arsenic, cadmium and lead. Carcinogenic risks associated with exposure to arsenic exceeded safety thresholds. Indoor air quality fluctuated during the study, with varying toxicity levels assessed using the Aliivibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition assay. These findings underscore the importance of mitigating indoor air pollution associated with coal burning and highlight the potential health risks from long-term exposure. Effective interventions are needed to improve indoor air quality and reduce health risks in coal-burning households.

Simulating the impact of particulate matter exposure on health-related behaviour: A comparative study of stochastic modelling and personal monitoring data

Epidemiological and exposure studies concerning particulate matter (PM) often rely on data from sparse governmental stations. While low-cost personal monitors have some drawbacks, recent developments have shown that they can provide fairly accurate and fit-for-purpose data. Comparing a stochastic, i.e., agent-based model (ABM), with environmental, biometric and activity data, collected with personal monitors, could provide insight into how the two approaches assess PM exposure and dose. An ABM was constructed, simulating a PM exposure/dose assessment of 100 agents. Their actions were governed by inherent probabilities of performing an activity, based on population data. Each activity was associated with an intensity level, and a PM pollution level. The ABM results were compared with real-world results. Both approaches had comparable results, showing similar trends and a mean dose. Discrepancies were seen in the activities with the highest mean dose values. A stochastic model, based on population data, does not capture well some specifics of a local population. Combined, personal sensors could provide input for calibration, and an ABM approach can help offset a low number of participants. Implementing a function of agents influencing others transport choice, increased the importance of cycling/walking in the overall dose estimate. Activists, agents with an increased transport influence, did not play an important role at low PM levels. As concentrations rose, higher shares of activists (and their influence) caused the dose to increase. Simulating a person's PM exposure/dose in different scenarios and activities in a virtual environment provides researchers and policymakers with a valuable tool.

Microbial-assisted phytodegradation for the amelioration of pyrene-contaminated soil using Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aspergillus oryzae with alfalfa and sunflower

Environmental pollution caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) jeopardizes nature. PAHs are the most toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic pollutants and their cleanup is important for the environment. In the current research, to assess and evaluate three remediation strategies for pyrene removal from the soil, a pot experiment was performed: (a) bioremediation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aspergillus oryzae, (b) phytoremediation with sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and (c) microbial-assisted phytoremediation for the treatment of pyrene (700 mg kg-1). Results depict that P. aeruginosa significantly promoted the growth and tolerance of taken plants and reduced pyrene concentration in soil. Compared with those planted in pyrene-contaminated soil without inoculation. The highest percentage of pyrene removal was observed in P. aeruginosa inoculated alfalfa (91%), alfalfa inoculated with A. oryzae (83.96%), and without inoculation (78.20%). Moreover, alfalfa planted in P. aeruginosa augmented soil had the highest dehydrogenase activity (37.83 μg TPF g-1 soil h-1), and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (91.67 μg fluorescein g-1 dry soil). DHA and FDA are the indicators of bioaugmentation influence on the indigenous microbial activity of contaminated soil. As a result of the findings, the rhizospheric association of plants and microbes is beneficial for pyrene removal. Therefore, P. aeruginosa-assisted phytodegradation might be a more successful remediation technique for pyrene-contaminated soil than bioremediation and phytodegradation solely.

Crosscutting of the pollutants and building ventilation systems: a literature review

Considering the time spent in enclosed environments, it is essential to study the relationship between pollutants and building ventilation systems to find whether the types and levels of pollutants and greenhouse gasses, which are expected to be exhaled through ventilation systems into the atmosphere, have been adequately evaluated. We propose the hypothesis that the exhaled air from residential buildings contains pollutants that may become another source of contamination affecting urban air quality and potentially contributing to climate drivers. Thus, the main goal of this article is to present a cross-review of the identification of pollutants expected to be exhaled through ventilation systems in residential buildings. This approach has created the concept of "exhalation of buildings" a new concept enclosed within the research project in which this article is included. We analyze the studies related to the most significant pollutants found in buildings and the studies about the relation of buildings' ventilation systems with such pollutants. Our results show that, on the one hand, the increase in the use of mechanical ventilation systems in residential buildings has been demonstrated to enhance the ventilation rate and generally improve the indoor air quality conditions. But no knowledge could be extracted about the corresponding environmental cost of this improvement, as no systematic data were found about the total mass of contaminants exhaled by those ventilation systems. At the same time, no projects were found that showed a quantitative study on exhalation from buildings, contrary to the existence of studies on pollutants in indoor air.

Comprehensive control of PM 2.5 capture and ozone emission in two-stage electrostatic precipitators

Indoor air purification is extremely urgent to eliminate the health threat of PM 2.5, VOCs and microbial aerosol for exposing people, for which ESPs enjoy exceptional advantage for its special high-voltage characteristic. However, the secondary air pollutant of ozone is produced to possibly cause potential risk. In this work, six kinds of two-stage ESPs containing various charger and collector units, whose structure and size design are determined according to the indoor application, are developed to investigate the comprehensive control of PM 2.5 capture and ozone emission. Responsive surface methodology is employed to explore the relationship among ozone concentration, wire number, charger current and airflow velocity, and obtain regression model for predicting ozone emission. The comprehensive evaluation standard considering efficiency-ozone double factors is proposed to optimize structure design and working conditions of two-stage ESPs. Experimental results show that two-stage ESPs with a unit ratio of >3/4 can keep relatively good stable state, whose current reduction is in around 10 μA, for preventing particle charging function of charger from basically affecting. For the two-stage ESP with Ra = 2/5, it finds the optimization of working conditions of collector can bring rapid improvement of collection efficiency for 0.25 μm particles, which reaches up to be >60 %, while the optimization of that of the charger can only result in an enhancement of <30 %. RSM analysis exhibits a strong connection between the interactive effect of charger current and airflow velocity for presenting a steep response surface. Based on comprehensive control of PM 2.5 and ozone pollutants, it suggests the two-stage ESP with Ra = 2/5 is selected at the first priority and then that with Ra = 1/6, while two-stage ESP with Ra = 4/3 is not recommended for unsatisfied consequence of both of PM 2.5 capture and ozone emission.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from non-tobacco sources in homes within high-income countries: a systematic review

The health impacts associated with exposure to elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) are well recognised. There is a substantial number of studies characterising PM_2.5 concentrations outdoors, as well as in homes within low- and middle-income countries. In high-income countries (HICs), there is a sizeable literature on indoor PM_2.5 relating to smoking, but the evidence on exposure to PM_2.5 generated from non-tobacco sources in homes is sparse. This is especially relevant as people living in HICs spend the majority of their time at home, and in the northern hemisphere households often have low air exchange rates for energy efficiency. This review identified 49 studies that described indoor PM_2.5 concentrations generated from a variety of common household sources in real-life home settings in HICs. These included wood/solid fuel burning appliances, cooking, candles, incense, cleaning and humidifiers. The reported concentrations varied widely, both between sources and within groups of the same source. The burning of solid fuels was found to generate the highest indoor PM_2.5 concentrations. On occasion, other sources were also reported to be responsible for high PM_2.5 concentrations; however, this was only in a few select examples. This review also highlights the many inconsistencies in the ways data are collected and reported. The variable methods of measurement and reporting make comparison and interpretation of data difficult. There is a need for standardisation of methods and agreed contextual data to make household PM_2.5 data more useful in epidemiological studies and aid comparison of the impact of different interventions and policies.

Particulate Matter Concentration in Selected Facilities as an Indicator of Exposure to Their Service Activities

In recent years, the correlation between the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere and inside buildings has been reported as high. The air inside living quarters and public utility buildings or the interiors of public transport vehicles, as well as the relationship between the internal and external sources of particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants, have underwent sufficient research. On the other hand, non-production rooms, i.e., offices, restaurants, beauty salons, etc. remain very poorly recognized in this respect. For the above reasons, the aim of this work is to determine the difference in the total dust (TSP) and respirable PM (PM4) concentrations in selected rooms, i.e., offices and beauty centers, in relation to their outdoor concentrations. They were measured at six locations in accordance with the standard for the conditions at workplaces by means of PM aspirators. Indoor concentrations of TSP and PM4 were much higher than those in the external surroundings of the facilities. There were no significant relationships between the TSP and PM4 concentrations inside and outside tested rooms. Although the characteristic of the internal PM essentially depends on the characteristics of the external PM migrating to the interior of the premises, considering some types of non-production premises, internal emissions fundamentally changed the characteristics of PM.

Cooking activities in a domestic kitchen: Chemical and toxicological profiling of emissions

To obtain emission factors and cooking-related chemical signatures, a monitoring campaign was carried out in a modern kitchen where different dishes of the Latin cuisine were prepared. Particulate matter (PM₁₀, PM_2.5 and PM₁) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) were continuously measured. Passive tubes for carbonyls and a high volume PM₁₀ sampler were simultaneously used. PM₁₀ filters were analysed for organic and elemental carbon and for multiple organic compounds, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The toxic potential of PM₁₀ was evaluated using a bioluminescence inhibition bioassay. Acrolein was never detected, while formaldehyde and acetaldehyde levels were comparable to those in the background air. The protection limit for TVOCs was always exceeded. Fine particles comprised more than 86% of the PM₁₀ mass concentrations. PM₁₀ emission rates ranged from 124 to 369 μg min^-1. Relatively low PAH concentrations were obtained. PM₁₀ encompassed alcohols, acids, plasticisers, alkyl esters, sterols, sugars, polyols, glyceridic compounds, phenolics, among others. Total concentrations were 1.9-5.3 times higher during cooking than in the background air but, for some compounds, differences of tens or hundreds of times were registered. PM₁₀ from grilled pork was found to contribute to non-negligible cancer risks and to be very toxic, while samples from other dishes were categorised as toxic.

Quantifying source contributions for indoor CO2 and gas pollutants based on the highly resolved sensor data

Household air pollution is the dominant contributor to population air pollutant exposure, but it is often of less concern compared with ambient air pollution. One of the major knowledge gaps in this field are detailed quantitative source contributions of indoor pollutants, especially for gaseous compounds. In this study, temporally, spatially, and vertically resolved monitoring for typical indoor gases including CO₂, CO, formaldehyde, methane, and the total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was conducted to address pollution dynamics and major sources in an urban apartment. The indoor concentrations were significantly higher than the simultaneously measured outdoor concentrations. A new statistic approach was proposed to quantitatively estimate contributions of different sources. It was estimated that outdoor CO₂ contributed largely to the indoor CO₂, while main indoor sources were human metabolism and cooking. Outdoor infiltration and cooking contributed almost equally to the indoor CO. The contribution of outdoor infiltration to methane was much higher than that to formaldehyde. Cooking contributed to 24%, 19%, and 25% of indoor formaldehyde, methane, and VOCs, whereas the other unresolved indoor sources contributed 61%, 19%, and 35% of these pollutants, respectively. Vertical measurements showed that the uplifting of hot air masses led to relatively high concentrations of the pollutants in the upper layer of the kitchen and in the other rooms to a lesser extent.
