Adolescent-Reported Latino Fathers' Food Parenting Practices and Family Meal Frequency Are Associated with Better Adolescent Dietary Intake

Food parenting practices, family meals, and preschoolers' dietary intake: A study of Hispanic families with low incomes

Over the last 20 years, numerous studies have helped identify how food parenting practices and family meals are associated with young children's intake of healthy (e.g., fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains) and unhealthy (e.g., added sugars, saturated fats, sugar-sweetened beverages) foods. However, we know of no study to date that has examined the independent contributions of food parenting practices and family meals in predicting young children's dietary quality in the same sample. Because measures assessing food parenting practices and family meals are likely correlated with one another, it is important to understand the independent contributions of each to guide the development and implementation of interventions to promote child health. Hispanic mothers of 3- to 6-year-old children from families with low incomes (N = 253) completed questionnaires assessing their food parenting and family meal practices, as well as a food frequency questionnaire assessing their child's dietary intake. Multiple regressions showed that food parenting practices were most consistently associated with children's dietary intake, with healthy intake (e.g., vegetables, whole grains) primarily associated with feeding structure (i.e., regular timing of meals/snacks, measured portions, and monitoring), and unhealthy intake (e.g., saturated fats, added sugars, sugar-sweetened beverages) positively associated with external control. Restriction showed negative associations with both healthy and unhealthy foods. The only dietary variable independently associated with frequency of family meals was consumption of whole grains. Implications for the design of programs to promote positive child health outcomes are considered.

The influence of family characteristics on food parenting practices among parents with school-age children and adolescents: A systematic review

Family characteristics can influence parents' implementation of food parenting practices. However, with a growing body of research on family characteristics and food parenting practices, a systematic review of the related topic has yet to be found in the current literature. Hence, the study aimed to review existing studies on family characteristics and food parenting practices among parents with school-age children and adolescents. Family characteristics refer to the family background or demographics that involve race/ethnicity, family income, parents' education levels, food security, culture, acculturation, and family structure. The study used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for the review process. The data was collected from EBSCOhost Discovery, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Forty-five relevant articles were analyzed and summarized, and the findings were presented in three themes, including (1) culture, races/ethnicities, and acculturation, (2) socioeconomic status and food security, and (3) family structure. The results showed that the family characteristics identified in this study can influence the engagement of food parenting practices among parents with school-age children and adolescents. Several issues have been addressed for the advancement of future research, which can lead to better suggestions and implementation of food parenting practices among parents. Therefore, parents can improve their food parenting experiences and enhance their children's health, growth, and development.

Regular Family Meals Associated with Nutritional Status, Food Consumption, and Sedentary and Eating Behaviors of Brazilian Schoolchildren and Their Caregivers

The influence of family meals on nutrition and health for families has been understudied, especially in low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to analyze associations between regular family meals and body mass index (BMI), food consumption, eating, and sedentary behaviors among Brazilian schoolchildren and their caregivers. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1887 Brazilian schoolchildren aged 6-11 years and their caregivers. Caregivers provided sociodemographic data, their child's weight and height, and the frequency of family meals. Schoolchildren provided data on gender and silhouette scale. Both provided their food consumption, eating, and sedentary behavior data. Associations between regular family meals and BMI, ultra-processed food consumption, and dietary diversity were assessed through multivariate logistic regression models. Correlations of regular family meals with eating and sedentary behaviors were assessed using Pearson chi-square. Regular family meals were frequent (86.6%), and they were associated with less unhealthy BMI in caregivers (AOR: 0.74; 95%CI: 0.5-0.9), as well as higher dietary diversity in caregivers (AOR: 1.66; 95%CI: 1.0-2.7) and in schoolchildren (AOR: 1.78; 95%CI: 1.4-2.3). The coexistence of high dietary diversity and both low ultra-processed food consumption (AOR: 1.45; 95%CI: 1.0-2.1) and healthy BMI (AOR: 1.41; 95%CI: 1.0-1.9) in children was associated with regular family meals. Regular family meals were correlated with healthy eating behaviors in child-caregiver dyads (p < 0.002) and with sedentary behavior in caregivers (p = 0.019). Our findings underscore regular family meals as a protective factor against malnutrition among Brazilian families.

Indian fathers are involved in nurturing healthy behaviours in adolescents: A qualitative inquiry

BACKGROUND

Indian adolescents exhibit unhealthy food behaviours and inactive lifestyles which increase their risk of developing obesity and associated negative health consequences. The family food environment represents a vital setting to nurture healthy lifestyle behaviours in adolescents, with parents influencing their adolescents' dietary and physical activity behaviours. Yet, much of the existing evidence exploring parental influences predominantly focuses on mothers while fathers' engagement in instilling healthy dietary and physical activity behaviours is understudied, more so in the context of developing economies like India. Therefore, this qualitative study was designed to understand Indian fathers' views on instilling healthy behaviours in their children.

METHODS

Convenience sampling along with snowball sampling techniques were employed to recruit fathers of adolescents aged 10-19 years from Kolkata city, India. Informed by the research aim and review of literature, an interview guide was developed and pre-tested. Interviews were carried out either in person or virtually (Zoom/telephone) in English/Hindi/Bengali as per the preference of the participants. All interactions were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and translated to English for the purpose of data analysis. The transcripts were analysed thematically using NVivo software program. Themes were identified using both inductive and deductive approaches.

RESULTS

A total 36 fathers participated in the interviews. Seven main themes were identified: (i) Involvement of fathers in adolescent upbringing (i.e. engagement in meal preparation, food shopping, educational activities, physical activity); (ii) Family food environment (i.e. setting food rules, having meals with children, making food available); (iii) Challenges to instilling healthy behaviours in adolescents (i.e. adolescents' sedentary lifestyle and liking for unhealthy foods); (iv) Barriers to routine involvement in adolescent upbringing (i.e. time constraints due to paid employment, poor socio-economic status); (v) Adolescent nutrition education: (vi) Dual burden of malnutrition (i.e. awareness of malnutrition, no knowledge about government-led health programs for adolescents); (vii) Paternal knowledge.

CONCLUSIONS

The emerging themes reveal that Indian fathers played a crucial role in instilling healthy dietary and physical activity behaviour in their adolescents through various parenting practices such as purchasing nutritious food, enforcing food rules, disseminating nutrition-related knowledge, and encouraging adolescents to participate in moderate-to-vigorous intensity outdoor sports. This provides strong support for the inclusion of fathers in sustainable family-focused lifestyle interventions to maximise the nurturing care required by adolescents as well as assist in normalising the representation of fathers in health and welfare policies designed for adolescents.

Qualitative Research on the Perceptions of Factors Influencing Diet and Eating Behaviors Among Primarily Latinx Seventh-Grade Students

BACKGROUND

Latinx youth are a population of concern, at elevated risk for chronic diseases and with poor adherence to dietary recommendations.

OBJECTIVES

To examine Latinx seventh-grade students' perceptions of the factors that influence their diet and eating behaviors.

DESIGN

This qualitative research used focus groups and an inductive content analysis approach.

PARTICIPANTS/SETTING

Five sex-stratified focus groups (three groups with females) with 35 primarily Latinx seventh-grade students were conducted at two local Title 1 public middle schools in a large metropolitan area of the Southwestern United States.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The discussion protocol included questions about participants' food choices, the role of their parents in their diet, and healthy body-related concerns among their peers.

ANALYSES

Verbatim transcripts were coded in NVivo 12 on the basis of specificity, extensiveness, and frequency. Themes emerged from group dialogue, detailed conversations, and predominant topics of discussion, and aligned with ecological systems theory.

RESULTS

Participants referred to factors influencing Latinx seventh-grade students' eating behaviors at the individual, family, household, and school levels. At the individual level, participants described their eating as unhealthy and perceived it as determined by taste, convenience, ease of preparation, and home availability. Participants expressed concerns about diabetes because of their body weight and family history, and identified those concerns as reasons for acceptance of healthy foods and the desire for parents to model healthy eating behaviors. Family-level factors perceived as influencing dietary behaviors included the role of parents as providers of food and models of unhealthy eating, budget constraints, and availability (or lack thereof) of healthy foods at home. Similarly, the identified school-level factors aligned with availability and quality of foods in that environment.

CONCLUSIONS

Family- and household-related factors emerged as important influences on seventh-grade students' dietary behaviors. Future diet interventions should incorporate strategies targeting these multiple-level factors that influence dietary intake for Latinx youth and that address the concerns related to disease risk.

Satisfaction with Food: Profiles of Two-Parent Families with Adolescent Children

The objectives of this study were to distinguish family profiles based on the level of satisfaction with food-related life (SWFoL) of mothers, fathers, and adolescents, and to characterize the profiles based on the three family members' diet quality and nutritional status, family's eating habits, parental feeding practices, parent's nutritional knowledge, and sociodemographic characteristics. Questionnaires were applied to a sample of 300 two-parent families with adolescent children, aged between 10 and 17 years, in Temuco, Chile. The questionnaires used were: satisfaction with food-related life (SWFoL); adapted healthy eating index (AHEI); family eating habits questionnaire (FEHQ); and the nutritional knowledge subscale. They also answered questions about eating habits and provided data to determine BMI and sociodemographic characteristics. Four different profiles were identified with respect to SWFoL: "Families satisfied with their food" (50.6%); "Fathers and mothers moderately satisfied with their food, children satisfied" (23.2%); "Families extremely satisfied with their food" (16.6%); and "Fathers and mothers satisfied with their food, children extremely dissatisfied" (9.7%). The profiles demonstrated heterogeneity in SWFoL. Higher levels of SWFoL (mothers, fathers and adolescents) were associated with healthier eating habits. These results contribute to new studies that enable understanding of how families' healthy eating habits are part of improving quality of life.

Associations of Maternal and Paternal Parenting Practices With Children's Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Physical Activity: Preliminary Findings From an Ecological Momentary Study

BACKGROUND

Childhood obesity prevention interventions routinely focus on changing maternal parenting practices. Failure to assess how fathers' weight-related (ie, diet and physical activity) parenting practices contribute to children's energy balance behaviors limits the understanding of their paternal role within the family. Examining the independent and interacting effects of fathers' and mothers' weight-related parenting practices on children's diet and physical activity addresses this important research gap.

OBJECTIVE

This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to investigate the within-subject and between-subject independent and interactive effects of maternal and paternal encouragement to eat and preparation of fruits and vegetables (F/V) and encouragement of and taking their child to be physically active on their child's self-reported F/V intake and physical activity engagement.

METHODS

Participants included mother-father-child triads (n=22 triads, n=205-213 prompts/occasions) in the Mothers and Their Children's Health Study and the University of Southern California Fathers Study. Simultaneously, mothers and fathers (ages_mean 44.2 years, SD 5.6, and 45.2 years, SD 8.1, respectively), and their children (age_mean 12.0 years, SD 0.7) completed up to 8 randomly prompted EMA surveys per day on separate smartphones for 7 days. At each prompt, mothers and fathers each reported whether they did the following in the past 2 hours: (1) encouraged their child to eat F/V, (2) prepared F/V for their child, (3) encouraged their child to be physically active, or (4) took their child to be physically active. Children self-reported whether they consumed F/V or were physically active in the past 2 hours.

RESULTS

Results from Bayesian multilevel logistic models (all in log-odd units) indicated that at the within-subject level, greater maternal encouragement (β=2.28, 95% CI 0.08 to 5.68) of eating F/V was associated with greater child report of eating F/V, but paternal encouragement (β=1.50, 95% CI -0.83 to 4.52) showed no effects above and beyond maternal encouragement. Additionally, greater than usual paternal encouragement (β=2.28, 95% CI 0.08 to 5.54) and maternal encouragement (β=2.94, 95% CI 0.36 to 6.69) of physical activity had significant independent effects and were associated with greater child report of physical activity. No other within-subject or between-subject associations nor interactive effects were significant.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings from this study suggest that fathers play a role in supporting their children's physical activity but not their intake of F/V. Future EMA studies should recruit larger samples to evaluate the independent and interacting roles of mothers' and fathers' weight-related parenting practices on child's obesogenic behaviors.

Association between Parental Feeding Styles and Excess Weight, and Its Mediation by Diet, in Costa Rican Adolescents

Background. Whereas parental feeding styles (PFS) influence children’s diet, less is known about this relationship in adolescents. Methods. A cross-sectional study in 686 Costa Rican adolescents (13–18 years) evaluated 4 validated PFS scores: healthy eating verbal encouragement; scolding; directly controlling diet; instrumental/emotional. Diet was evaluated through 3-day food records, deriving a Traditional Costa Rica Adolescents Diet Score (TCRAD). Excess weight (EW) measured by BMI was dichotomized following standards. Regression-based mediation analysis estimated the overall and sex-stratified odds ratios of EW for natural direct (NDE), natural indirect (NIE), and total effects (TE) of the pathway PFS→TCRAD→EW. Results. A one-unit increase in the direct control PFS score was associated with higher EW odds overall [(TE: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.04–2.31; p-value = 0.033), (NDE: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.02–2.27; p-value = 0.039)], and in boys [(TE: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.04–4.38; p-value = 0.039), (NDE: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.03–4.31; p-value = 0.042)]. Non-significant mediation by TCRAD was observed for the healthy eating verbal encouragement PFS overall (p-value = 0.06). Associations for the instrumental/emotional and scolding PFS were not significant. Conclusions. Direct diet control from parents may contribute to adolescents’ excess weight, particularly among boys. Parents encouraging healthy eating might support adolescents’ healthy weight through a healthy diet. Longitudinal research should clarify the association between PFS and diet-related outcomes among diverse adolescents.

Parents' Modeling During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Influences on Family Members' Diet Quality and Satisfaction With-Food-Related Life in Dual-Earner Parents With Adolescent Children

Reciprocal family influences in the food domain have been little explored, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. To fill in this gap, this study explored actor and partner effects between parents' food modeling and parents' and their adolescent children's diet quality and satisfaction with food-related life (SWFoL); and the mediating role of diet quality between modeling and SWFoL. This study used a cross-sectional design. A sample of 430 different-sex dual-earner parents and one adolescent child were recruited in Rancagua, Chile, between March and June 2020. Parents answered the modeling dimension of the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire. Parents and adolescents answered the Adapted Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) and the SWFoL Scale. Analyses were conducted using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model and structural equation modeling. Results showed that one parent's modeling enhanced diet quality for themselves, their partner, and the adolescents. Parents' modeling was associated with their own SWFoL, directly and via their own diet quality. There were positive associations between mothers' modeling and adolescents' SWFoL; between mothers' diet quality and fathers' SWFoL; and between mothers' modeling and fathers' SWFoL via the fathers' diet quality. Parents' modeling can improve the three family members' diet quality, while mothers' modeling and diet quality showed to improve fathers' and adolescents' SWFoL.
