Abstract
BACKGROUND Implantology, as a recognized therapeutic approach, is gaining prominence. The decision-making process and success of implant therapy are closely linked to patient knowledge and expectations. This study aims to explore the association between age and knowledge regarding oral implants. METHODS Participants were categorized into three age groups (ag): ag 1 (35-44 years), ag 2 (65-74 years), and ag 3 (75 years and older). A total of 400 participants per age group were randomly selected using data from the residents' registration office of Berlin, Germany. Structured telephone interviews were conducted between 2016 and 2017, employing a 67-item questionnaire covering awareness, information level, cost estimation, attitudes, and experiences with oral implants. RESULTS Despite a low overall knowledge level across all age groups, there was no significant correlation between age and knowledge about oral implants. Awareness increased with age. Information sources varied, with friends, acquaintances, and dentists playing key roles. Participants expressed diverse opinions on implants, with durability and stability identified as crucial characteristics. Significant differences in knowledge were observed between age groups regarding awareness, information sources, and perceptions of dentists offering implants. CONCLUSIONS The study suggests a need for targeted educational programs, emphasizing age-appropriate information sources to enhance health literacy in oral implantology, particularly among older individuals. Educating physicians on oral implant basics is also crucial. Implementing these measures could empower individuals to make informed decisions about oral implant treatment, thereby contributing to improved oral health outcomes.

Abstract
Aim: The rising average age increases edentulous cases, demanding more implant-prosthetic rehabilitation, with cardiovascular diseases being significant factors. This study compared healthy patients (CG = Control Group) and those with cardiovascular disease (TG = Test Group) for implant survival, Marginal Bone Loss (MBL), peri-implant tissue level parameters as Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR), Plaque Index (PI), Bleeding on Probing (BoP) Peri-implant Probing Depth (PPD), and surgical complications. Smoking impact on both groups and medication influence in the TG were secondary outcomes. Patients underwent full-arch implant prosthetic rehabilitation. Methods: Implant survival rate, MBL, and surgical complications were recorded during the monitoring period (7 years), while peri-implant parameters were assessed at the end of the observational time. A total of 26 and 28 CG and TG patients were recruited, respectively. Results: A total of 128 implants were placed in CG, while 142 in the TG. Implant survival and MBL showed no significant differences (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, peri-implant parameters were more unfavorable in TG. The only significant surgical complication was higher bleeding rates in the TG (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Cardiovascular patients showed similar implant survival and MBL but had adverse peri-implant parameters and increased bleeding rates. Higher smoking levels may relate to unfavorable implant outcomes. Further investigation is needed on drug impact with larger samples.

Abstract
The aim of this comparative retrospective clinical study was to assess the effect of age on immediate loaded full-arch mandibular rehabilitation in younger vs. elderly patients. Patients with an age between 45 and 60 years (younger group, YG) or with an age more or equal to 75 years (older group, OG), requiring a mandibular full-arch rehabilitation were scheduled for the present study. Implant and prosthetic failure, biological and prosthetic complications, and peri-implant marginal bone level changes were recorded until a 7-year follow-up. Sixty-six patients were included in the study; a total of 264 implants were placed and, in total, 66 "all-on-four" rehabilitations were delivered. In total, 33 patients were scheduled in the YG and 33 patients in the OG. At the 7-year follow-up, an overall implant failure rate of 1.14% was reported. Moreover, at the 7-year radiographic evaluation, peri-implant crestal bone loss averaged 1.12 ± 0.91 mm for the YG and 1.04 ± 1.01 mm for the OG. No statistically significant differences were found between the YG and OG except for the rate of peri-implantitis, which was statistically higher in the YG. The present study reported that immediate fixed mandibular full-arch rehabilitation is a viable procedure in elderly people of equal or more than 75 years of age.

Abstract
Oral health screening is important for maintaining and improving quality of life. The present study aimed to determine whether patients with a certain level of alveolar bone resorption could be screened by salivary bacterial test along with their background information. Saliva samples were collected from 977 Japanese patients, and the counts of each red-complex, that is, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia, were measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis. Mean bone crest levels (BCLs) were measured using a full-mouth periapical radiograph. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine associations between BCLs (1.5-4.0 mm in 0.5 mm increments) and explanatory variables, such as the number of each red-complex bacteria and the patients' age, sex, number of teeth, stimulated saliva volume, and smoking habits. When the cutoff BCL value was set at 3.0 mm, the area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity values were optimal at 0.86, 0.82, and 0.76, respectively. In addition, all tested explanatory variables, except sex and T. denticola count, were significantly associated with BCLs according to a likelihood ratio test (p < 0.05). Additionally, the odds ratio (OR) was substantially increased when a patient was >40 years old and the bacterial count of P. gingivalis was >107 cells/µL (OR: >6). Thus, P. gingivalis count and patients' background information were significantly associated with the presence of a certain amount of bone resorption, suggesting that it may be possible to screen bone resorption without the need for radiography or oral examination.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Long-term studies of modern zirconia implants are still insufficient. This prospective 8-year follow-up study investigated one-piece zirconia implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who had received a one-piece zirconia dental implant (PURE ceramic implant, Institut Straumann GmbH, Basel, Switzerland) were included in this study. Next to the implant survival and success rates, the radiographic and clinical implant parameters were assessed. RESULTS The overall survival rate of 67 zirconia implants in 39 patients was 100%. The overall success rate was 89.6%. Around the immediate zirconia implants, the success rate was 94.7%, and around the delayed implants, 87.5%. The immediate implants showed a significantly higher bone crest compared to the delayed implants (p = 0.0120). According to the pink esthetic score, the immediate implants revealed more favorable esthetic results compared to the delayed implants after an 8-year follow-up (p = 0.0002). CONCLUSIONS After 8 years, the one-piece zirconia implants presented an 89.6% success rate. Regarding the timing of implantation, in individual cases, immediate implantation can have slight advantages over delayed implantation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Immediate implants can also be considered for zirconia implants and should not be excluded on principle.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the effect of immediate versus delayed dental implant placement strategies on cell differentiation in a dental callus. DESIGN The implant was placed in the mandible with two nearby teeth using an idealized two-dimensional finite element model. Eight weeks after surgery, the mechanobiological modeling of healing was used to estimate cell differentiation. It was assumed that the callus was initially filled by mesenchymal cells. The model then transformed mechanical stimuli received by the callus from loadings in terms of distortional and dilatational strains into predictions of the cellular phenotypes, including fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts, or whether they would remain unchanged or die. RESULTS The results demonstrated that delayed loading led to greater bone formation than immediate loading. Osteoblast colonies were observed in the base of threads in the immediately-loaded implant, whereas the delayed loading caused distant bone formation from the surrounding bone side towards the implant. The osteoblasts were differentiated from both intramembranous and endochondral mechanisms of ossification. After eight weeks, approximately 61 % of the callus was ossified in the delayed placement model compared to 35 % in the immediate placement model, resulting in a greater amount of fibrocartilaginous tissue on the bone side of the callus. CONCLUSIONS Immediate and delayed loading models generated different results. In the delayed strategy, bone cells were supplied appropriately during the first few weeks following surgery, whereas the immediate loading caused fibrocartilaginous tissue differentiation. In the form of distant osseointegration, the secondary stability of the dental implant was higher and faster due to the delayed placement.

Abstract
This report documents the clinical and histological outcome of 3D-printed calcium phosphate blocks placed in two-stage procedures to successfully rehabilitate atrophic alveolar ridges. This approach yielded a functionally favorable result. Histological evaluations were performed after healing periods of 6 months and showed ongoing bone regeneration and sprouting capillaries.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to highlight the properties of ozone as an aid to non-surgical therapy compared to non-surgical therapy alone. This study included thirty Caucasian patients (eighteen women and twelve men) aged between 35 and 65, recruited at the Oral Hygiene and Prevention Center of the Dental Clinic of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan. The periodontal probing was recorded with a PC-PUNC 15 manual probe (Hu Friedy) at time 0; the scaling and root planing session was performed at T1 with or without the aid of ozone therapy, and then, the patients were re-evaluated at one month (T2), three months (T3), and six months (T4). The results obtained show that there are not statistically significant differences in terms of reduction in clinical periodontal indices such as plaque, bleeding, and pocket depth between the two groups. Therefore, treatment with ozoral gel would not seem to improve non-surgical periodontal therapy alone. However, clinical periodontal indices significantly improved in patients treated with non-surgical therapy and ozone gel. From this point of view, ozone gel can be used as an aid to non-surgical therapy due to its excellent characteristics, in particular, its powerful virucidal action.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This rat study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of temperature thresholds that affect peri-implant bone cells and morphology and the potential usefulness of thermal necrosis for inducing implant removal for a subsequent in vivo pig study. METHODS On one side, rat tibiae were thermally treated before implant insertion. The contralateral side was used as the control group without tempering. Temperatures of 4 °C, 3 °C, 2 °C, 48 °C, 49 °C, and 50 °C were evaluated with a tempering time of 1 min. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses were performed. RESULTS The EDX analysis revealed significant increases in element weights at 50 °C (e.g., calcium, phosphate, sodium, and sulfur; p < 0.01). The results of the TEM analysis showed that at all the applied cold and warm temperatures, signs of cell damage were observed, including vacuolization, shrinkage, and detachment from the surrounding bone matrix. Some cells became necrotic, leaving the lacunae empty. CONCLUSIONS Temperature of 50 °C led to irreversible cell death. The degree of damage was more significant at 50 °C and 2 °C than at 48 °C and 5 °C. Although this was a preliminary study, from the results, we identified that a temperature of 50 °C at a time interval of 60 min can lower the number of samples in a further study of thermo-explantation. Thus, the subsequent planned in vivo study in pigs, which will consider osseointegrated implants, is feasible.

Abstract
This study aimed to fabricate a glass ionomer cement/diopside (GIC/DIO) nanocomposite to improve its mechanical properties for biomaterials applications. For this purpose, diopside was synthesized using a sol-gel method. Then, for preparing the nanocomposite, 2, 4, and 6 wt% diopside were added to a glass ionomer cement (GIC). Subsequently, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) analyses were used to characterize the synthesized diopside. Furthermore, the compressive strength, microhardness, and fracture toughness of the fabricated nanocomposite were evaluated, and a fluoride-releasing test in artificial saliva was also applied. The highest concurrent enhancements of compressive strength (1155.7 MPa), microhardness (148 HV), and fracture toughness (5.189 MPa·m1/2) were observed for the glass ionomer cement (GIC) with 4 wt% diopside nanocomposite. In addition, the results of the fluoride-releasing test showed that the amount of released fluoride from the prepared nanocomposite was slightly lower than the glass ionomer cement (GIC). Overall, the improvement in mechanical properties and optimal fluoride release of prepared nanocomposites can introduce suitable options for dental restorations under load and orthopedic implants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the accuracy and patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) of the computer-guided "double factor" technique for treating fully edentulous patients. METHODS A proof of concept prospective study was designed. Ten consecutive patients requiring full arch dental implant supported rehabilitation in a private practice were enrolled between October 2021 and March 2022. All patients were treated by means of an All-on-four®, and implants were planned and placed according to the "double factor" technique. This technique merges the static and dynamic computer-guided surgical approach in the same surgery. The primary outcome was the accuracy of implant placement, measured by overlapping post- and pre-operative cone-beam computerized tomography with the implant planning. Additionally, PROMs and patient quality of life after surgery were evaluated using different questionnaires. Descriptive and bivariate data analyses were performed. Statistical significance was considered for p < 0.05. RESULTS A total of 48 implants were placed using the "double factor" technique, and 12 full-arch immediate loading prostheses were delivered. The mean angular deviation was 3.74° (standard deviation [SD]: 2). The total linear deviation at the apex and platform of the implant was 1.25 mm (SD: 0.55) and 1.42 mm (SD: 0.64), respectively. No statistically significant differences were found between tilted and axial implants, the upper and lower jaw, or the right and left side. High self-reported satisfaction was registered, and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) score improved postoperatively (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS The "double factor" technique is a valid and accurate treatment approach for fully edentulous patients. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The double factor technique merges the advantages of both the dynamic and static computer assisted surgery approaches, affording accurate and predictable results when treating fully edentulous patients in a minimally invasive manner.

Abstract
We report a 48-year-old female patient with various stress fractures of extremities, musculoskeletal pain, and tooth loss. Hypophosphatasia was diagnosed based on clinical and laboratory findings and ALPL genetic results. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis of hypophosphatasia in adults and appropriate treatment to prevent further complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effect of the vibration of osteoblasts on the cell cycle, cell differentiation, and aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Primary maxilla osteoblasts harvested from eight-week-old mice were subjected to vibration at 3, 30, and 300 Hz once daily for 30 min; control group, 0 Hz. A cell proliferation assay and Cell-Clock Cell Cycle Assay were performed 24 h after vibration. Osteoblast differentiation assay, aging marker genes, SA-β-Gal activity, and telomere length (qPCR) were assayed two weeks post- vibration once every two days. RESULTS Cell proliferation increased significantly at 30 and 300 Hz rather than 0 Hz. Several cells were in the late G2/M stage of the cell cycle at 30 Hz. The osteoblast differentiation assay was significantly higher at 30 Hz than at 0 Hz. Runx2 mRNA was downregulated at 30 Hz compared to that at 0 Hz, while osteopontin, osteocalcin, and sclerostin mRNA were upregulated. p53/p21, p16, and c-fos were activated at 30 Hz. SA-β-Gal activity increased significantly at 30 or 300 Hz. Telomere length was significantly lower at 30 or 300 Hz. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that providing optimal vibration to osteoblasts promotes cell cycle progression and differentiation and induces cell aging.

Abstract
Superelastic nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires have become the preferred archwire for orthodontic alignment and the levelling stage due to their ability to exert a light force on teeth throughout a wide range of tooth movement. The magnitude and trend of the force exerted on the malposed tooth is influenced by the orthodontist's consideration of the size and geometry of the NiTi archwire during orthodontic therapy. In this work, a novel approach of a short-term ageing treatment was utilized to modify the magnitude and trend of the bending force of a commercial superelastic NiTi archwire. The bending behavior of the superelastic NiTi archwire was altered by subjecting it to different temperatures in an ageing treatment for 15 min. The bending behavior of the aged NiTi archwire was examined using a three-point and three-bracket setup. The commercial NiTi archwire's bending forces in both the three-point and three-bracket configurations were successfully altered by the 15 min ageing treatment. During unloading in the three-bracket arrangement, the NiTi archwires aged at 490 °C or 520 °C exhibited a lower magnitude and more consistent force compared to the NiTi archwires aged at 400 °C or 430 °C. Ageing the archwire for 15 min at 490 °C produced a suitable size of Ni4Ti3 precipitate, which makes the wire more flexible during bending and reduces the unloading force in the three-bracket bending configuration. The short-term aged NiTi archwire could be used to enhance the force delivery trend to the malposed tooth by lowering the amplitude of the force delivered and sustaining that force throughout the orthodontic treatment duration.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of clinical visual examination (ICDAS II), digital periapical radiography (PR), near infrared light transillumination (NIR-LT), and laser fluorescence (LF) to microcomputed tomography (Micro-CT) which is the reference standard for the detection of non-cavitated occlusal enamel and dentin caries in third molar teeth. Potential participants were consecutively recruited. In this prospective study, 101 third molars of 101 patients were examined; the molars had non-cavitated occlusal caries which required extraction. ICDAS II, PR, NIR-LT and LF examinations were carried out by two blinded examiners. Reference standard was determined by micro-CT imaging seven days after extraction. Accuracy rate, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and areas under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (Az) were statistically analyzed. Nonparametric variables were subjected to the Kruskal−Wallis Test. Significance level was set as p < 0.05. NIR-LT had the highest sensitivity (99.67−99.67%) and accuracy (78.22−77.23%) for the determination of occlusal enamel caries according to examiners 1 and 2, respectively. LF method had the highest sensitivity (70.83−54.17%) and accuracy (66.34−59.41%) for determining occlusal dentin caries according to examiners 1 and 2, respectively. The ROC curve (Az) value ranged between 0.524 and 0.726 for the different methods tested. Most effective methods for the diagnosis of occlusal enamel and dentin caries were determined to be NIR-LT and LF pen methods, respectively. The present prospective clinical study showed that NIR-LT and LF-Pen were a reliable modality for the detection of occlusal enamel and dentin caries without ionizing radiation.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The study aimed to translate the original English version of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) into Lithuanian and to assess reliability and validity of the translated instrument (OHIP-Lt) in patients with advanced stages of periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Subjects (N = 67) with stage III-IV periodontitis aged 30-63 years were surveyed by questionnaire and examined clinically. Psychometric analysis included explanatory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses and psychometric tests. Results: Cronbach's alpha of the translated OHIP was 0.96. EFA revealed four dimensions which Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.75 to 0.96. Construct validity of the four-factor model derived from the OHIP-Lt was supported by findings of CFA (RMSEA = 0.077). The total OHIP-Lt and its subscale scores increased as the patients' self-rated oral health status changed from healthy to unhealthy. Discriminative validity of the OHIP-Lt was confirmed by its higher scores among patients who had an increased spacing between the maxillary anterior teeth and increased clinical attachment level (CAL ≥ 5 mm) compared to those who did not. Conclusions: The translated Lithuanian version of OHIP-Lt was identified as four-dimension inventory. Good reliability and validity of the OHIP-Lt provide the evidence for its further use in study on advanced periodontal disease burden among Lithuanian patients.

Abstract
Tribology is the discipline concerning the application of friction, lubrication, and wear concepts of interacting surfaces in relative motion. A growing interest has developed in tribology application in medical biomaterials, such as resin composites used in restorative dentistry. Yet, the keywords "tribology" and "biotribology" are little applied in the pertinent publications. The aim of this scoping review was to offer an overview of tribology application in dental composites research and to identify knowledge gaps and address future research. A literature search was conducted on Pubmed and Scopus databases and the studies investigating the tribological behavior of resin composites were included for qualitative synthesis. The majority of studies on dental tribology were published in the research areas of mechanical engineering/nanotechnology and differed in several methodological aspects. The preponderant engineering approach and the lack of standardized testing make the laboratory findings poorly informative for clinicians. Future research should focus on the tribological behavior of dental materials composites by means of an integrated approach, i.e., engineering and clinical, for improving development and advancement in this field of research.

Abstract
(1) Objectives: This study evaluated the clinical outcomes of dental implants placed in previously failed sites and discussed the risk factors that mattered in reimplantation. (2) Methods: All the cases by one specific implantologist during his first five years of clinical practice were screened, with a focus on those who received reimplantation. The clinical outcomes were assessed, including the implant survival, peri-implant health, and patients' satisfaction. (3) Results: 28 patients (31 implants) were recorded as failures from 847 patients (1269 implants), with a 2.4% overall failure rate at the implant level, of whom 19 patients (21 implants) received reimplantation treatment. After a mean follow-up of 33.7 ± 10.1 months (95% CI 29.1-38.3 months), 20 implants remained functional, but 1 implant revealed a secondary early failure, indicating a 95.2% overall survival rate. The mean probing depth (PD), modified sulcus bleeding index (mSBI), and marginal bone loss (MBL) of the surviving reinserted implants were 2.7 ± 0.6 mm (95% CI 2.5-3.0 mm), 0.7 ± 0.5 (95% CI 0.5-1.0), and 0.5 ± 0.6 mm (95% CI 0.3-0.8 mm), respectively. Embedded healing occurred more frequently in the reinserted implants than in the primary implants (p = 0.052). The patients' satisfaction suffered from implant failure, but a successful reimplantation could reverse it with close doctor-patient communication. (4) Conclusions: Reimplantation treatment was recommended, based on a thorough evaluation and consideration of the risk factors combined with effective communication with the patients.

Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive effort to develop and analyze first-of-its-kind design-specific and bioactive piezoelectric scaffolds for treating orthopedic defects. The study has three major highlights. First, this is one of the first studies that utilize extrusion-based 3D printing to develop design-specific macroporous piezoelectric scaffolds for treating bone defects. The scaffolds with controlled pore size and architecture were synthesized based on unique composite formulations containing polycaprolactone (PCL) and micron-sized barium titanate (BaTiO3) particles. Second, the bioactive PCL-BaTiO3 piezoelectric composite formulations were explicitly developed in the form of uniform diameter filaments, which served as feedstock material for the fused filament fabrication (FFF)-based 3D printing. A combined method comprising solvent casting and extrusion (melt-blending) was designed and deemed suitable to develop the high-quality PCL-BaTiO3 bioactive composite filaments for 3D printing. Third, clinical ultrasonic stimulation (US) was used to stimulate the piezoelectric effect, i.e., create stress on the PCL-BaTiO3 scaffolds to generate electrical fields. Subsequently, we analyzed the impact of scaffold-generated piezoelectric stimulation on MC3T3 pre-osteoblast behavior. Our results confirmed that FFF could form high-resolution, macroporous piezoelectric scaffolds, and the poled PCL-BaTiO3 composites resulted in the d33 coefficient in the range of 1.2-2.6 pC/N, which is proven suitable for osteogenesis. In vitro results revealed that the scaffolds with a mean pore size of 320 µm resulted in the highest pre-osteoblast growth kinetics. While 1 Hz US resulted in enhanced pre-osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, and spreading, 3 Hz US benefited osteoblast differentiation by upregulating important osteogenic markers. This study proves that 3D-printed bioactive piezoelectric scaffolds coupled with US are promising to expedite bone regeneration in orthopedic defects.
