Decoding trends in mRNA vaccine research: A comprehensive bibliometric study

BACKGROUND

In recent years, infectious diseases like COVID-19 have had profound global socio-economic impacts. mRNA vaccines have gained prominence due to their rapid development, industrial adaptability, simplicity, and responsiveness to new variants. Notably, the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognized significant contributions to mRNA vaccine research.

METHODS

Our study employed a comprehensive bibliometric analysis using the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, encompassing 5,512 papers on mRNA vaccines from 2003 to 2023. We generated cooperation maps, co-citation analyses, and keyword clustering to evaluate the field's developmental history and achievements.

RESULTS

The analysis yielded knowledge maps highlighting countries/institutions, influential authors, frequently published and highly cited journals, and seminal references. Ongoing research hotspots encompass immune responses, stability enhancement, applications in cancer prevention and treatment, and combating infectious diseases using mRNA technology.

CONCLUSIONS

mRNA vaccines represent a transformative development in infectious disease prevention. This study provides insights into the field's growth and identifies key research priorities, facilitating advancements in vaccine technology and addressing future challenges.

Research progress of circadian rhythm in cardiovascular disease: A bibliometric study from 2002 to 2022

Background

Given that the circadian rhythm is intricately linked to cardiovascular physiological functions, the objective of this investigation was to employ bibliometric visualization analysis in order to scrutinize the trends, hotspots, and prospects of the circadian rhythm and cardiovascular disease (CVD) over the past two decades.

Methods

A thorough exploration of the literature related to the circadian rhythm and CVD was conducted via the Web of Science Core Collection database spanning the years 2002-2022. Advanced software tools, including citespace and VOSviewer, were employed to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the co-occurrence and collaborative relationships among countries, institutions, journals, references, and keywords found in this literature. Furthermore, correlation mapping was executed to provide a visual representation of the data.

Results

The present study encompassed a total of 3399 published works, comprising of 2691 articles and 708 reviews. The publications under scrutiny were primarily derived from countries such as the United States, Japan, and China. The most prominent research institutions were found to be the University of Vigo, University of Minnesota, and Harvard University. Notably, the journal Chronobiology International, alongside its co-cited publications, had the most substantial contribution to the research in this field. Following an exhaustive analysis, the most frequently observed keywords were identified as circadian rhythm, blood pressure, hypertension, heart rate, heart rate variability, and melatonin. Furthermore, a nascent analysis indicated that future research might gravitate towards topics such as inflammation, metabolism, oxidative stress, and autophagy, thereby indicating new directions for investigation.

Conclusion

This analysis represents the first instance of bibliometric scrutiny pertaining to circadian rhythm and its correlation with cardiovascular disease (CVD) through the use of visualization software. Notably, this study has succeeded in highlighting the recent research frontiers and prominent trajectories in this field, thereby providing a valuable contribution to the literature.

The global state of research in stem cells therapy for spinal cord injury (2003-2022): a visualized analysis

Objective

Our study aimed to visualize the global status and frontiers in stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury by using bibliometric methodology.

Methods

Publication citation information related to stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury (SCI) studies between 2003 and 2022 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. For the visualized study, VOS viewer software and Graph Pad Prism 9.5 were used to perform bibliometric analysis of included data and publication number statistics in stem cell therapy for the SCI domain.

Results

A total of 6,686 publications were retrieved. The USA and China made the highest contributions to global research with the highest number of citations and link strength. The journal Experimental Neurology ranks as the top journal, combining the publication amount and bibliometrics results. The University of Toronto, based in Canada, was the first-ranking institution. The directions of the current study could be divided into five clusters. The research of Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine and Neurosciences Mechanism Research may be the emerging frontiers in this domain.

Conclusion

In summary, stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries is poised for more valuable advances.

Trajectories of COVID-19: A longitudinal analysis of many nations and subnational regions

The COVID-19 pandemic is the first to be rapidly and sequentially measured by nation-wide PCR community testing for the presence of the viral RNA at a global scale. We take advantage of the novel "natural experiment" where diverse nations and major subnational regions implemented various policies including social distancing and vaccination at different times with different levels of stringency and adherence. Initially, case numbers expand exponentially with doubling times of ~1-2 weeks. In the nations where interventions were not implemented or perhaps lees effectual, case numbers increased exponentially but then stabilized around 102-to-103 new infections (per km2 built-up area per day). Dynamics under effective interventions were perturbed and infections decayed to low levels. They rebounded concomitantly with the lifting of social distancing policies or pharmaceutical efficacy decline, converging on a stable equilibrium setpoint. Here we deploy a mathematical model which captures this V-shape behavior, incorporating a direct measure of intervention efficacy. Importantly, it allows the derivation of a maximal estimate for the basic reproductive number Ro (mean 1.6-1.8). We were able to test this approach by comparing the approximated "herd immunity" to the vaccination coverage observed that corresponded to rapid declines in community infections during 2021. The estimates reported here agree with the observed phenomena. Moreover, the decay (0.4-0.5) and rebound rates (0.2-0.3) were similar throughout the pandemic and among all the nations and regions studied. Finally, a longitudinal analysis comparing multiple national and regional results provides insights on the underlying epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 and intervention efficacy, as well as evidence for the existence of an endemic steady state of COVID-19.

Modelling the effects of social distancing, antiviral therapy, and booster shots on mitigating Omicron spread

As the COVID-19 situation changes because of emerging variants and updated vaccines, an elaborate mathematical model is essential in crafting proactive and effective control strategies. We propose a COVID-19 mathematical model considering variants, booster shots, waning, and antiviral drugs. We quantify the effects of social distancing in the Republic of Korea by estimating the reduction in transmission induced by government policies from February 26, 2021 to February 3, 2022. Simulations show that the next epidemic peak can be estimated by investigating the effects of waning immunity. This research emphasizes that booster vaccination should be administered right before the next epidemic wave, which follows the increasing waned population. Policymakers are recommended to monitor the waning population immunity using mathematical models or other predictive methods. Moreover, our simulations considering a new variant's transmissibility, severity, and vaccine evasion suggest intervention measures that can reduce the severity of COVID-19.

Mapping the Global Evolution and Research Directions of Information Seeking, Sharing and Communication in Disasters: A Bibliometric Study

This paper aims to grasp developments and trends in research on information communication, information seeking and information sharing in disasters during 2000-2021. By using bibliometrics software CiteSpace and VOSviewer, the development trends of publications, disciplinary, journals, institutions and regional cooperation are mapped. Keyword co-occurrence analysis is used to further identify the evolution of the research hot points and visualize the research orientation and frontier. The results indicate that the field of information communication in disasters has received growing attention from various disciplines. Results of institutions and regional cooperation show that worldwide cooperation is still lacking and needs to be strengthened in future studies in this field. The key findings are five main research orientations in this field based on keyword co-occurrence, which are public information coordination research, public information behavior and perception research, health information communication research, risk communication and social media research and information technology in emergency management. The findings of this paper can be helpful for academics and emergency managers in disaster information management and risk communication by giving them a comprehensive understanding of people's information communication, seeking and sharing.

Modeling COVID-19 Transmission Dynamics: A Bibliometric Review

A good amount of research has evolved just in three years in COVID-19 transmission, mortality, vaccination, and some socioeconomic studies. A few bibliometric reviews have already been performed in the literature, especially on the broad theme of COVID-19, without any particular area such as transmission, mortality, or vaccination. This paper fills this gap by conducting a bibliometric review on COVID-19 transmission as the first of its kind. The main aim of this study is to conduct a bibliometric review of the literature in the area of COVID-19 transmission dynamics. We have conducted bibliometric analysis using descriptive and network analysis methods to review the literature in this area using RStudio, Openrefine, VOSviewer, and Tableau. We reviewed 1103 articles published in 2020-2022. The result identified the top authors, top disciplines, research patterns, and hotspots and gave us clear directions for classifying research topics in this area. New research areas are rapidly emerging in this area, which needs constant observation by researchers to combat this global epidemic.
